Sick kittie! Need advice!

topic posted Mon, April 23, 2007 - 2:09 AM by  Michelle
Hey! I just took one of my cats to get her fixed, so my cat fund is running very low. *sigh* I have a cat who is sick (different cat). He was hanging around the neighbor's cat who was showing symptoms of a severely runny nose, drenching his chest. My neighbors took him to the vet, never told me the problem, but said they gave him Doxycyline (sp). My issue is that my kitty is now showing symptoms. Instead of nose slobber, it's coming from his mouth. And he has really REALLY bad breath. I have Pennicillin, but wonder if this would help him out. Can't get the other antibiotic without a vet visit (at least, around here). Any thoughts or ideas? I could really use the help!!

Thanks so much, and just so you know, if I have no choice and he's not better, I WILL end up paying for the vet. It's just a matter of having food, or taking cat to vet... sad but true!

Oh hon, I wish I had something really helpful to say. I quite understand the issue of deciding who gets to eat. And if I recall you do rescue too.

I can only say what I might do if I found myself in that situation. Fresh wholesome nutritious food, like raw chicken or anything he wants, special loving attention, if that's what he wants or leave the poor baby in peace if that's what he wants.

I wouldnt be ruling out the vet visit, like you say, as a last resort but would be doing my best to focus on the reality that cats have been healing themselves of mysterious diseases long before they entered the world of man.

I know this isnt the law of attraction board but I guess I am saying that if we were to entertain the thought that this is a communicable disease, the next area of concern would be the rest of your cats.

And I dont think you want to go there.

I would also be doing web research on alternative treatments, just so I know as much as I can about how to help kitty, without harming.

Bless you dear. I send love to you and your kitty and a sincere wish that all will be well.

    purrrrs and kitty cuddles....shera

Thank you so much. Your calming thoughts made me feel better. He's currently getting some Pennicillin (sorry about spelling, been up ALL night watching him... quite sleepy) and seems to be a bit more perky. But still has the really horrendous breath and drooling problem. And he HATES to get shots, so I'm having a hard time with him. I'm by myself, so the towel-wrap is the only thing that's working...

Yes, I will go to the vet if he's not looking a little better by tomorrow evening. He's not too bad, but he sleeps like the dead, and has been trying to spend COLD nights sleeping on the porch, instead of sleeping on a warm sofa... really weird.

And I thought of the "rules of attraction" when fearing for my other cats. But my mind just says they are strong cats, have never had medical problems, and they will not get it. End of story. This cat has been sick once before... so he could just have a low immune system. And, well, that's the way I'm thinking of it for right now. I'll attract better situations with healthy thoughts!

If my cats stop eating their cat food (once in a while, they do) then I usually do the raw, or slightly cooked, meat route. Pretty much, my kitchen is theirs. If I'm eating it, and it's healthy for them, they get it. Not table scraps... just chicken and tiny tidbits of shrimp.

I'm really worried about him, but doing all I can. I know it will have to be enough for this minute. I'll just keep going hour by hour, and not worry too much about tomorrow. He's actually fairly active when he's awake. And is CONSTANTLY wanting attention. So I just stop what I'm doing and love him. *sigh*

Thanks, again. Oh, and yes, I do the rescue kittens stuff too. Thank goodness there aren't any at the moment. Had to turn a batch of 7 away because he's sick. At least we have a backup foster mom!!!

Have a beautiful day! Do something fun, and think of my little guy. He could use the happy vibes!

F**K..I feel your pain and intenseness towards your little one. I was in same boat last November with my baby JOE, had nothing but enought to feed my other ones and barely pay rent. Friends did what they could. I did yard sales and sold pretty much everything I owed (heck that is a small sacrifice for my little ones), but I owe like 3 vets from other cats that I couldn't go to anyone close by. I tried to give him anything he wanted and did exactly what you are doing, STOP and spend more time with him. He was doing ok for a few months but I think he had cancer (all my cats are indoors since we moved down from Seattle) so I know it was not an outside disease, but I couldn't do much except keep him comfortable - he wasn't suffering, but wasn't doing that well either. He didn't change his daily habits too much but I could just tell, ya know, you know when something is OFF with them.

Well he and I had our moments and he felt he wanted/needed to let me go on without him. Sad to say that IF things were different and I did take him to vet I am sure they would have put him through SOOOO much extra crap to make ME happier and not him. I was with him until the end. I lost some other babies at the vets and that I feel is worse - its the helplessness that KILLS me. Sorry to get emotional it just sucks, BUT they are here until they choose to move on I believe. I once had 9 rescued cats and now I am left with four awesome babies still- Love them more everyday more then ever, cause time is too precious and they have done nothing but love me through good and bad times.

I know your little one, Michelle, is looking out for you and doing his best and dealing with it the best he can. treat him and spoil him, and talk to him and share everything u can. positivity goes along way. I am sending you my heart felt goodness your way and thanks for being a rescuer too. You are very special and your little guy KNOWS this, shoot he picked YOU. Best wishes and have a great day Give big hugs to yours..

What sweet and uplifting words you all share with me! I feel better just reading all of your thoughts.

My cats are the most spoiled kitties on earth. I have (technically 3) but a few strays come and go once in a while. All local strays making the neighborhood loop every month or so *lol*. I, too, once had 9 rescues... all my babies. Luckily, a very kind neighbor fell in love with two, and since the cats adored them, I let them go. Have never lost a grown cat and I don't plan on it! *grumble* He was the runt kitten of his group and nearly lost him at a week old, then he had an abscess (I think... he got better within 5 days, so no vet needed... that time). He's been through quite a bit. But all three (four) of my lovlies are spoiled to the max. They jump in my lap, I stop what I'm doing and scratch them. They never get turned away. This little guy, now that he's sick, is spending about 60% of his waking hours in my lap... and he's lovin it! I drug his furry rear end into the bathroom and gently washed his chin this afternoon. At first he kinda struggled. Not much, but then, he just lay there, looking into my eyes and purring while I used a cloth to wipe warm water on his neck and throat. Such trust and love I saw in his eyes! And I was nearly in tears... the way he lay on my lap at that moment was the way he lay as a kitten, suckling from the bottle. I've been pretty emotional lately. I'm not one of those "cat people" who claim they love cats, then pat their heads and say "now go away good kittie". No... my cats and I have lengthy conversations, we dance in the afternoon sun, we snuggle nose-to-nose on a cold winter's night, and when I'm sick, they are my nursemaids; constantly taking turns warming my lap and laying their paws on my head (they always do this when I'm sick... not sure why...). To loose this kind of connection is more than loosing a human friend. That's why he WILL be okay. I feel it.

Thank you so much (again) for your kind and calming words. I know my furby appreciates it too (sometimes he "reads" the screen *lol*).

Blessings on you and your cats!

              Michelle

awwww.. I readin your words about the face washing incedent. What memories are made of eh?

420, I agree about taking them to the vet when you know they are going to die anyway. It is such a special and deeply emotional time saying goodbye and to have to do it amongst smells of antiseptic, timetables, needles, bandages. Depending what the situation is, if I didnt have to, I wouldnt.

Both my cats hate the vets and I have made an expressed promise to Simba that I wont take him to the vet unless I really really have to. I hope nothin happens to him.

Hugs and happy thoughts and butterflies in the meadow....shera

Update! Kittie started getting better! He's doing about 75% better now. I spoke to a natural pet store owner in a neighboring town, and they think it might be a tooth problem. He's going to the vet the end of this week... but just to letcha all know, he's MUCH better!

Thanks so much for all your advice and positive vibes. I appreciate it more than you can imagine. My family doesn't understand my attachment to my cats... I don't understand why they don't understand *lol*. My "head" kitty will lay on command (I say lay down, and she lays down... none of the others will do it) and my two "wild children" will come running down the hill when they hear me call them... and they won't come to anyone else. I can't help loving them and worrying about them. You guys are about the only people who understand these things and I appreciate it so much!!!!
