Hi everyone, I am new here so thought I would introduce myself and tell you a bit about myself and my feline family members :)
I am a mother of 7 children, singer/songwriter/craftsperson and part time student (studying naturopathy and alternative therapies), and I currently share my house with 9 furry babies as well :)
We have Sweetie (white/tabby male, about 6yo, he has just recently come to live with us when my partner moved in); Banshee, so named because when I found her she used to constantly yowl like one *G*, 3yo pure white female and momma of the rest of the babies in my house (she was dumped and somehow found my place and has lived here ever since, I am still looking for the invisible neon sign that only animals can see that says "all strays welcome"!); Bowie, Banshee's littermate, who is so named because he has odd-coloured eyes, one blue and one green; Angus Ruadh (Gaelic, "Angus the Red" cause he's ginger); Amber (little white girl with amber eyes) who is about 6mths old, and her brothers Corey (tabby/white), Neko (white/blue eyes), Arnie (white/odd coloured eyes, one gold one blue) and Reejit (white/odd eyes, one gold one blue but they are the opposite ones to Arnie LOL, and Reejit is also deaf).
Have been reading a few of the threads so far with interest, particularly the one about declawing - not one of my babies is declawed and we have never had a problem with scratched furniture or anything, they don't even have a scratching post because we have several great trees that they love to scratch and climb (I have a huge yard). And despite having so many cats, we have had no problems with them fighting or anything, even Sweetie who has only been here a week has settled in nicely and is very relaxed and happy to be with the other cats (and they all adore him too, he is currently curled up on the sofa with Amber and Corey snuggled up to him) :)
My kitties are also all allowed to go in and out as they please during the day (since I am home all day most days) and only get shut in at night time, but they tend to like to stay inside during the day because that is where my kids and I are mostly and they like to be part of the action ;) As I type I have Reejit sitting happily on top of the monitor supervising me *G*, and Neko pottering around my feet, Angus has just made a fool of himself (again!) by trying to dodge the dishrack when going out the kitchen window on a toilet run and has misjudged his jump and fallen in the sink *giggles*, fortunately there was no water in it! He just kinda pulled himself up with that indignant "I MEANT to do that, truly I did!" face and looked away then went out the window properly.
I also have 4 chickens in my yard who love to play with my cats, it is not uncommon for me to go outside to do something and find them playing tag (usually chicken chasing cat!) or having a good conversation with each other, and on a few occasions I have seen either a chicken pecking bits of dirt and stuff off cats, or cat grooming the chicken! They are all best friends :)
Anyway just thought I'd say hi, and I look forward to much cat-related discussion with lots of other cat-people :)

Re: New to the tribe
Sat, March 10, 2007 - 11:12 PMhi tonia! glad to meet someone with more kitties than me!!! i have 8. i volunteer at a kill-shelter so anyone can figure that one out. but, physically and monetarily i'm at my limit. and space-wise too, because mine are all indoor-only kitties. we have a lot of ailurophobic cat-trappers in this town. believe me, i see the results of their "hobby" at the shelter.
i teach yoga and am going back to school for a vet-tech degree, i'm hoping. i have a bachelor's degree in journalism, but now all that math and science i've avoided for the past 30 years is coming back to bite me on the butt!
i have no kids. these are my furkids:
*spider, 11: black skinny-mini kitty, scaredy cat -- rescued her from a trailer park
*fluffy, 5: torbie, fat cat, very sweet girl -- she "appeared" at the transportation dept's yard one day
*pepper, 5?:white/tabby, wants to be the only kitty, kind of snitty to the others but she's my baby -- she was dumped at the small airport out here in the desert
*morgan, 2 1/2: grey tabby boy, very sweet, quiet, shy guy -- he chose me at a crowded no-kill rescue i volunteered for a year ago
*sebastian, 2: black&white with aquamarine eyes, my expressive guy who chirps a lot -- shelter kitty
*cleopatra, 4; abyssinian/tabby mix, very smart kitty, very affectionate -- she was dumped at a burro sanctuary and adjoining fire station out in the desert. we trapped her to get her spayed but found she was not feral at all. my husband fell in love with her so we brought her home. hard to believe she was out there for 3 1/2 years having litter after litter of kittens that mostly didn't make it.:(
*opie, 2-3?: red/silver tabby, funny big guy, very talkative -- another shelter kitty.
*dokken, 1: norwegian forest cat mix (white/tabby), a cryptorptic kitty that would have NEVER been adopted from the shelter because the adopter would have to pick up the cost of the expensive neuter. this guy is soooo adorable and soooo sweet, i couldn't let him get put to sleep. ($300 for that neuter -- cutting him open and pushing his little wayward testicle back in place so it could be snipped).
they all get along pretty well. spider and pepper stick to themselves.
