Well she may act like she doesn't know you for a few hours when you get back, but she will remember you. I used to travel a lot for work and would get rather pointed rebuffs for an hour or so. Food bribes will also speed up the return to normal.

I went camping for a couple of weeks and left my very possessive manx cat with my wife. When I came back he came up to me in the bed at night, looked at me, then curled up with her.

It has been that way every night since. Manx cats are funny. He still follows me around like a puppy, but when he goes to sleep he still uses her for a pillow. Actually I am glad, because I had a hard time falling asleep with him on my belly.

When I went off to college, the cat I grew up with took to sleeping with my mom at night. But always the night before I would come home on breaks, she would sleep in my old bed, and would sleep with me while I was home. So yeah, your cat will remember you. If I were you, I would talk to her about your travel plans, injecting lots of emotion into it, explaining how you are going away for a while, but you love her and have made sure she will be cared for while you are gone, and that you are coming back. They may not get the words, but they do pick up on emotions very well. And also, the best time to do this is right before you leave, as cats tend to live in the now.

I don't think cats forget their people any more than dogs do--there's no reason to fear she'll forget you, especially if you've had her for a fair length of time and she is affectionately attached to you now.

She may very well freak out upon your leaving--not to scare you, but it's not uncommon--and the first day, maybe two, after you come back she might behave a little fearfully. But that's because ANY change in a cat's life creates stress, and having the person she's accustomed to vanish for an extended period will be stressful; so will your sudden reappearance.

But you said she'll be left with your roommate. Is she on good terms with your roommate right now? If so, she should be fine. I would be less concerned with whether or not she'll remember you when you come back than how she'll react to your leaving, but if she's already used to your roommate, there shouldn't be any worries, although many cats do exhibit signs of mild to severe depression when the person of their strongest attachment leaves.

I've heard that a cat's memory span is something like 2 or 3 months. I'd like to beleive it's longer then that....anyone?
