My adult male cat Percy will stop at nothing to suckle. He sneaks up to you and makes himself very comfortable and then begins sucking on your clothes wherever his lips fall. If you let him you hear the loud sucking sounds and the spot is soon soaking wet. How do I stop him? Please help.
ps he also loves cucumbers. will eat skin and any other part he finds even if he has to dig in the garbage for it

Re: Grown male cat still wants to suckle
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 5:21 PMThis is actually very common. A great many cats that are weaned too soon (and six weeks IS too soon even though that is often assumed to be the magic number) continue to suckle for the rest of their life.
I don't think you can stop him. He does it because it's a comfort to him. Kittens usually want to continue to suckle even after they're ready for solid foods, because it's a means of being close to Mom and all the comfort and security that that provides. The whole reason why people _should_ let mama cats wean their kittens gradually, rather than having someone other than Mom arbitrarily decide it's time and pluck the kitten away so that it has to go cold turkey off of nursing, is because Mom does it gradually and the weaning process allows the kitten to adjust, not to mention learn to cope with frustration.
Maybe someone else has had success in this situation, but I never have, and don't know anyone else who has either. Besides that, is it really that big a deal? Why not just let him suckle? -

Re: Grown male cat still wants to suckle
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 7:19 PMI had an otherwise very macho male siamese we got from a shelter as an adult, who suckled the tip of his tail. The sound alone was disgusting. At least in his case we broke him of the habit by trimming the hair on his tail tip into a crew cut for a couple months. If your guy only suckles on you, you could try tapping him on the nose when he starts. The nose smack is how cats discipline each other and seems to carry a lot of weight for very little actual force. -

Re: Grown male cat still wants to suckle
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 4:45 PMMy found cat did this to my older male cat..... he put a stop to it real quick. I think it may seem mean but you do have to end it and being the human "mommy" you have to make sure the message is clear. -

Re: Grown male cat still wants to suckle
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 6:29 AMMy Abby came from a shelter and she occasionally nurses on my earlobes.
Someone told me that that means she thinks I'm "mom".. its only once in a while. I didn't see anything wrong with it.

Re: Grown male cat still wants to suckle
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 8:56 PMMy two boy cats do that with each other. Sugar (we thought he was a girl!) will actually nurse on his own nipples and if Aloisius hears him, he will come over and nurse off of him, too. We pull him off if the sound gets too annoying!
