Sick Kitty??

Hi, I'm a new member to this tribe but a long time cat lover!!

My kitty, Theo, has a tumor on his tummy that is going to be surgically removed tomorrow. I found out it's mast cell cancer. The dr said this type of cancer is usually dermal (at the skin level) but they won't know for sure if it's spread until they do blood work and get in the surgery. She also said that 99% of the time, surgical removal takes care of it. I take him to a super place in SF and have a great deal of confidence in the dr, but I haven't had any experience with something like this.

Have any of you kitty people gone through this with your cats??

We've been so fortunate that our pets have always been healthy and when their time came, it was just plain old age.

I'm usually good at handling stress, but I'm so darn worried about this. He's only 9.

Have any of you cat lovers had a kitty with a mast cell tumor??

Thanks!

yikes! No, no tumor on my cats, but my 84 year-old grandfather was diagnosed with skin cancer last year, and after he had the tumor removed, he was all ready to go and no problems since. But he was always optimistic and cared for with affection and lots of attention.
So, as long as ur cat gets its breakfast and the morning paper on time, I expect there'll no problem.

Seriously, though, it's very important that u don't get too emotional and fall apart, even if, heaven forbid, it should turn out to be more than dermal, because it's very important that ur cat feels safe and loved. Animals are extremely sensitive to emotional vibes and will only be stressed by ur distress...

Thanks for asking. Theo's surgery went well. They removed all of the cancer. He's playful and happy now, especially because that awful collar is off of him.

The dr said surgical removal is usually the cure. We're going to take him in every 6 months for a while and I'll keep an eye on him. The good news is that this type of cancer usually appears on the skin..so I'll be watching him closely.

      No more sick kitties!
