when Petey chases bugs, & flies, my boyfriend takes the "catch" away, so he won't eat it, cause he said Petey would get sick or parasites, I don't think he would, if he were outdoors he'd be eating way worse & we couldn't stop him. Is there anything an indoor kitty can get from eating the ocasional moth or spider?

RE: indoor kitty question
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 9:42 PMI absolutely let my kitties eat all of the bugs that make it indoors that they're willing to chew up. Each of my cats have found, in their own time, that spiders, while intriguing in both movement and texture on the tongue, are bitter, and they eventually stopped chasing and eating them. Up until that point, I was grateful for the help in spider management, frankly! If they were outside, no question that they would be exposed to much worse. Let them have their (very!) small victories, I say! They'll be so very proud of themselves! :o) Peace! ~ Misha

Re: indoor kitty question
Sun, September 9, 2007 - 7:29 AMI don't think germs and parasites are your greatest concern. Pesticides were the thing I worried about. Bugs crawl in that stuff but it doesn't kill them outright. So I just don't spray anymore. We have four cats and if a bug gets in they dispatch it better than any spray. Well -- except for the spiders as previously mentioned.
So far the most dangerous thing our cats have eaten is expensive pet food that had poison from China in it. They survived but I worry about their kidneys.

Re: indoor kitty question
Sun, September 9, 2007 - 5:07 PMWhat your boyfriend may not have considered is how many bugs your cat catches and eats that neither of you know about.
If your cats vaccinations are up, I wouldn't worry about it. Cats have been eating all manner of bugs and small prey for long enough that their bodies are built for it. -
