i have a lovely pixelvision camera and it seems to work but, even with the special old school connector cable thingies, I can't get anything out of it, can't see anything I've shot. Anyone have advice or know of some crafty individual who could rip it apart and love it back together again?

The Last Winter - Miss it at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival?

Miss seeing "The Last Winter" at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival this year? Well now is your chance to see it on the big screen! This is a great film and I highly recommend it. Check it out:

THE LAST WINTER opens Friday, December 14st at the Hollywood Theatre

Larry Fessenden, the acclaimed director of intimate horror films such as No Telling, Habit, and Wendigo, explores new ground with this chilling tale of an ancient evil released upon the world due to man’s constant disregard of the environment.

In one of the most pristine landscapes in the world, a ragtag team working to exploit the oil resources of Alaska is tormented by an unseen evil. After one crewmember is found dead near an abandoned drill site, his body naked and contorted into a pose of terror, each member of the team begins to feel disoriented and paranoid. Violent outbreaks and hallucinations follow and soon a distress call is sent out. The more scientific of the team believe that they are reacting to a microorganism that is being released from the thawing ice plains. The native people believe that an ancient spirit, a Wendigo, has come seeking revenge.

The rescue plane is brought down by a malevolent wind, and with little hope of another rescue attempt, two of the surviving members set off into the cold on a desperate bid for survival. Once they leave the camp, the tormentors are finally revealed in a visually stunning finale that will take the audience’s breath away.

In English. 101 minutes. Not Rated. Showing Friday, Monday-Thursday at 9:40pm, Saturday and Sunday at 5:00pm & 9:40pm.

"Far and away the scariest movie of the year - and certainly the smartest... What we don't know, what we don't want to know, what we can't figure out in time; these are the true demons stalking The Last Winter." -- Bob Strauss, L.A. Daily News

I'm looking to doing some resing casting to make some props for a movie project I'm trying to assemble together, but I have no experience with it. It looks pretty cheap and easy to do, but my apartment is too small to make a big mess in. Can anyone here give me some pointers?

What about this space/location (filmmaking warehouse):

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/off/246228308.html

$4400 dollars a month for 10,000 square feet of space.
Add approximately $400 in bills

rough breakdown:

-- Gustav Sculptor and Dead Letter b in the 'living quarters' area at $400 each
-- 1 space - clay/pottery - $1500 for 2000 square feet, either as a separate entity or us managing a shared pottery/firing space (we would invest in kiln)
-- 1 space - wood and metal production/manufacturing $1500 for 2000 square feet, either as a separate entity or us managing a shared shop
-- 1 space - visual arts, printmaking, either $1500 for 2000 square feet, either as a separate entity or us managing a shared studio space

Total space used: 7000 sq. ft.
Total income from this: $5300

Leaving approximately 3000 square feet of building for parties, staging for BM, etc..

Two questions -

1) Are there groups who are looking for a space who want to join in this project?
2) Are there any individuals who might want to invest $1000 to help us get started, in exchange for some number of parties they could throw and keep the money from (3 parties = super cheap rental?)

I can put in $4000. Figure we need around $5,000 more for move in.

;-b

Hello Friends!

Now after recovering from a two month avalanche of writing jobs, I'm taking on new clients for script and book work.

My company is WRITERSSOURCE.NET. I do a wide variety of creative and business writing, but my best work is done analyzing/doctoring books and scripts. You can check out my bio and testimonials from happy customers at WRITERSSOURCE.NET.

In addition, the last two months have been phenomenal! I finished my modern day fairy tale "London Fog" and became a finalist at the International Moondance Film Festival with it. London Fog is getting a lot of positive attention.

I've done six freelance writing jobs, one being an ongoing project whereas I'm developing a great screenplay. (The story has already been bought by a production company.)

I just became an assistant director (and possibly a co-producer) of Star Trek Voyages episode "World Enough and Time", written by Marc Zicree and Michael Reaves, and starring George Takei - pretty dang exciting.

I am also producing/writing and directing a documentary with Marc Zicree on the making of New Voyages called "Elvis Made Me Do Star Trek". (If you look at their website you'll get the Elvis reference.) Not to shabby!

If you need any more convincing go to the website and check me out! Otherwise, please don't hesitate to e-mail or call.

Have a super-great-wonderful-summer!

Short sci-fi script looking for production

A short 10-minute or less sci-fi piece. I wrote it for a small budget, figuring I would produce it myself, but I'm too wrapped up in post on my current project. I can go over the details with the producer and talk about how I was thinking of doing the seemingly expensive things on the cheap. I'd just love to see it done.

If you like doing hard sci-fi, we can keep talking, because this is part of a collection of short <10 minute sci-fi stories, all tied together (think "Martian Chronicles") scripts.

Drop me a note if you're interested, preferably with a link to some other things you've finished.

Independent Film study course, movie recommendations

Hello Theater/Film Folk,

I'm looking for recommendations for little-known indie films to consider for an Independent Film Study workshop I'm facilitating at Portland Community College in April and May. More info on what this is about can be found at these links:

http://www.gregkerr.net/ifpcc.htm

http://www.pcc.edu/schedule/default.cfm?fa=dspCourse2&thisTerm=200602&crsCode=4FILMSINDP&topicCode=SPI&subtopicCode=TP

Here is the situation:
I have 5 of the 6 films that I'm going to show already picked out and I'm in search of Portland-connected feature "films" -- I should use the word "videos," since digital is A-Ok, too. I have non-Portland connected films and wouldn't mind replacing one or two, also.

I may consider short films if I get enough of those to fill up a two-hour slot.

Here is my criteria:
- Portland-connected
- DVD format
- not well-advertised, or very new (i.e., not something that has been done-to-death at film festivals)
- features between 80 to 150 minutes, shorts under 40 minutes
- story driven (as opposed to purely artsy)
- fictional (although I will consider good documentaries)

There isn't any pay for this -- it's for educational purposes -- however, it will give you some exposure through PCC and through my Website www.gregkerr.net

Also, this will be a great focus group if you need to get feedback on a film -- we can talk about how you can get feedback if you are interested in that.

I'm willing to purchase DVDs if that is an option as well.

Please write to me at my direct email address, greg@gregkerr.net if you have any films, recommendations, or any useful info.

Thanks!
Greg Kerr

PDX literati, poets, cinephiles, mediamakers:

On Feb. 24th, the Hollywood Theatre will present the Portland premiere of my new feature, "The Greater Circulation", a cinematic treatment of Rainer Maria Rilke's "Requiem for a Friend" and I'm trying to figure out ways to get the word out to the underground.

Besides tribe.net and craig's list, are there any other e-lists or posting places that you know of to help promote this type of event ? Any film reviewers out there who write for the Mercury interested in a preview dvd ?

here's a link to the movie site which has a review, clip, pix, etc.

www.verticalpool.com/tgc.html

any and all help greatly appreciated.
Norwescon Film Festival!

My buddies and I are running a li'l film festival at Norwescon (http://www.norwescon.org) and we're looking for submissions!

If you've never ben to Norwescon, it's a lot of fun. It's a sci-fi convention held in Seattle WA every year. We run a moviemaking workshop there, called "Let's Make a Movie!". Here are some of the results of previous workshops: http://www.eskimo.com/~rkj/norwescon.htm

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Please feel free to pas this around to any moviemaking buddies, if you like.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Here's the rules:

1. Filmmakers must be Norwescon members and should be present at the convention to introduce their movie(s)

2. Movies should be ten minutes or shorter.

3. Movies should be appropriate genre films for Norwescon (sci-fi, fantasy, horror). If it addresses this year's theme, even better.

4. Submissions should be on VHS videotape or DVD-R or MiniDV tape 5. There will probably be no prizes, but the judges urge you to not consider this a deterrent to the occasional bribe. Pop-Tarts, for example.

6. Entries should be sent to The Fandance Film Festival c/o Guerrilla Productions, 11105 SW Cottonwood Lane, Tigard, OR 97223. Please do NOT send submissions to any other address, as no one will know what to do with them.

7. Submission deadline is March 13, 2006. Submission fee: none. Late deadline is April 1, 2006. Late submissions may be treated scornfully. Late submission fee: a very good excuse. Handwritten.

8. All entries must include submitter's name, address, phone number, title of piece, length of piece, and a signed and dated statement declaring "I release all rights to broadcast/display/present this movie to Norwescon for the purposes of the Fandance Film Festival and other supporting situations/advertisement ONLY, including the right to duplicate it for mechanical/projection purposes.", and anything else you think we should know. Entries can be picked back up at the film festival.

9. The people running this film festival are fairly responsible, but imperfect, being composed entirely of meat. Therefore, they might make mistakes. In fact, they probably will. I mean, it's Sunday after a long con, so you should just expect a bit of goofing around. But we're doing our best, so please understand and have a little patience.

Webcam issue... Any idea where this question should be asked?

I'm trying to work with a friend in the Bay Area, and all he has is a Logitech webcam for showing me graphics. The problem is, I can't see the damn thing. He's on XP, I'm on Panther (os 10.3.9), and I don't know what software I need to see his. It's using an indeo codec which is not Mac-ported, but I don't see how that would make a difference once the signal is in the machine.

Does anyone have any useful advice? I'd really appreciate it. If not here, can I ask to be pointed at a tribe where this would be more appropriate? All the webcam tribes I've seen are just hookup groups. :( Thanks for any help you may have!

I have a friend in my program (tech theatre) who is *very* interested in working as a cinematographer. As I understand, she has no formal experience in the area yet, but from what I've seen of her work, she is capable, talented and dedicated. Live theatre and film have similar basics, and I believe she's doing the tech theatre major. Late teens, if I recall...

I've invited her to this tribe (and others), and am not sure when she'll be on. In the meantime, does anyone have ideas on how I can help her get started in the field? From what I've seen, she puts both work and creativity into her projects, and I think she'd be a good person to get working with. I realize that no one knows me in the PDX area yet, but I've got a pretty solid rep as a sound designer in northern California. Can't really afford to jeopardize that on an unknown, but I think she's got talent.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be most welcome, and I'll pass anything useful on to her. Thanks for your time, and as a shameless self-plug (I really have *no* shame), I'm available for custom sound design. If you can vaguely describe what you'd like to hear, I'll make it for you ahead of deadline... :P

Looking for good Flash Animators, Motion Graphics Designers, Graphic Designers, and a Copy Writer

Hello everyone. I'm looking for good flash animators, motion graphics designers, graphic designers, and a copy writer for an industrial (for a good cause of course) from mid November to mid January. I'm looking for nice, progressive people, who are willing and capable of pushing the envelope. We have a budget to pay people fairly.
We are 2 progressive minded, native oregonians, just doing commercial work while we wait for investment to come in for our next feature film. We really want to try people out for our next feature.

I posted on craigslist but it is impossible to really figure people out from a resume, so here is the catch:

I'm looking for people to recommend other people that you have worked with before. Tell me how great their work was, how much you loved them, etc. They should be in Portland and have their own computers.

Please post your replies here in the discussion so other filmmakers can see how great these people are.

Thanks a bunch,
Calen

Filmmaker's Meeting, Screenwriters Welcome

Reply to: filmmakers@lilfolksproductions.com
Date: 2005-11-06, 5:00AM PST

If you are a screenwriter, actor, cinematographer, director, gaffer, grip,
make-up artist, or just someone who wants to be involved in making movies, I
want to invite you to a meeting Wednesday night November 9th at the Pazzo
Ristorante Bar at 627 SW Washington at Broadway in downtown Portland.

I just moved to Portland from Chicago where we had a very active community
and I would like to set up something similar here. Please understand that
this is not a group to sit around talking about abstract concepts of movie
making or contemplating our navels. It will be a group that pulls together
our talent and resources and does the work of making movies. Which means on
some project I may be the director, on the next project I may be the key
grip, on the next project I may be the camera operator, or whatever. It will
be everyone bringing what they can offer to the table and helping everyone
else, because making movies cannot be done in a vacuum.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please come by the
Pazzo Ristorante Bar between 6:00 and 6:30 PM on Wednesday November 9th.

Please RSVP if you plan to attend (I have to let Pazzo know how many people
to expect) to filmmakers@lilfolksproductions.com.

Thanks, hope to see you there.

SFX/Animators needed for Portland amateur zombie movie

Flesh of my Flesh needs you!

It's a low-budget action horror movie that looks like a million bucks! Flesh of my Flesh (http://www.FleshOfMyFlesh.com/) chronicles the last hours of the War of the Undead, told from the point of view of the people stuck in the middle.

We're deep in post-production now and we're looking for a handful of very short special visual effects. Basically, there are some key seconds here and there where we could REALLY use a trick of lighting, a flash of inspiration, a dash of rotoscoping, the barest flicker of 3d or even the occasional wire erased. The pieces are rarely more than a second or two long, so the committment isn't that great per piece.

As payment, we can offer our profound gratitude, screen credit, and a copy of the DVD when it's finished.

What kind of schedule are we looking at? Well, the nice thing is that the assignments are all short and are designed to be distributed, so you can take your time and do the great job you've always wanted to do.

A little bit about us: Guerrilla Productions has been making movies since 1999. In 2003, we premiered our first feature, "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" (which was also animated) and shortly thereafter released it on DVD. It is now in its second printing. In 2004, we released our second DVD, "The Cosmic Horror Fun-Pak". "Flesh of my Flesh" will probably be our third DVD. So, it WILL be produced (in case you were wondering).

Ideally, you'll have some kind of experience with your tools of choice (we really don't care, as long as the files can ultimately be imported into Adobe Premiere, which means damn near any delivery format -- heck, you could send us a collection of sequential bitmaps if need be!), and be willing to ask questions and be eager to try new things. Each scene is a unique and cool piece of this movie.

If you're interested, please drop our CG Supervisor, Leopoldo, a note, at Leopoldo@FleshOfMyFlesh.com, or ask questions here, if you like.

SFX monkey,

sound designer(s) looking for creative 'n' weird work...

between myself and my best friend/design partner, we've got over 40 years' experience in sound design. I'm an award-winning theatrical designer, recently transplanted from Cali. I prefer projects which demand an unusual approach to effects, and I'm known for getting *deeply* involved in the productions in order to make the design the best it can be.

I'm starting a technical theater degree Monday at Mt. Hood CC, and will be producing at least three independent projects during my time there (on campus and probably radio). I've done over 100 productions since '89, and am going nuts not having anything to design for. If you've got an interesting project, please drop me a line. I prefer creepy 'n' icky stuff, but am flexible. I'm cheap (and would probably be free for the first couple, provided I have the necessary materials), and take my work seriously. I'd love to get involved in local film works, and my resume could certainly use the variety.

Let me blow your mind through hearables... :)

So, I'm ready to shoot a flick up in this motherfucker. I've got a cast and a story. The dialog will be somewhat improv but with a focus. Its a bit drama, a bit comedy. Several local talented unknowns are ready to unleash themselves, myself included, and we're going to start soon. I've got a 1ccd camera that has some issues but I'll use it if I need. Is there anyone on here willing to help me up the look of our movie a notch in hopes of selling after completion? We can't afford to buy or rent since we're scrapping together change to buy a cheap mac and Final Cut Express for editing and mastering, all under a student discount. I've handled high end equipment in the past but if you're more comfortable holding it yourself then we can work out a sharing of profits, as everyone involved will be working toward an equal split.

Also needed is a boom and shotgun mike for it. Above applies to this item as well. We're ready to go and want to shoot now so let me know whats up. Thanks all!

What about Eastern Oregon?

Greetings,
There is a bubbling wave of new media and film artists in the Eastern parts of Oregon, La Grande specifically. This land gave way to locations for films such as "Paint your Wagon, " where I hear Lee Marvin did a disappearing act for a week during production and was later found playing poker and drinking in a small rented room in the back of a small bar. This area is prime with location value and flavor. The wallowas and blue mountains are a great asset to Oregon and to filmmkers. I would liek to see some more filmmakers making there way here to check out the place. Locations are cheap, probably free, if approached properly and you would be amazed at the number of artists and creative souls hidden in the woods, away from the craziness. I feel that Eastern Oregon is an untapped resource and I would love to see it start to grow. With respect and wonderful intention this area would become a filmmaic wonderland.
If you are interested in this area contact me and I can help you make arrangments. I am currenlty working on a million dollar film for just under 30K. There are good people here.

Cheers.

Just an early alert - the last one went really well.

NW Documentary Arts & Media, hosted by Portland Art Center, presents:

"PRODUCING A FEATURE DOCUMENTARY: A first-hand perspective from filmmaker DAVID WEISSMAN."

Best of 48 HFP

I just saw this, and I thought the films were outstanding. What remarkable jobs they all did. I was *stunned* that these films were made in only 48 hours. And they looked like they were absolutely *tons* of fun to make. I've only been back in town a short time, and I worked on Buzz and TSoRC (I also worked on Dream-Quest, but that was ages ago :) ), but I missed FoMF and 48 HFP, and I feel like I got here just in time to miss getting involved in the intensely heavy and cool stuff for this year. I have no real skills (as some of you know), but I take direction well and I'm up for doing anything that I'm physically capable of doing. These films look like they were an absolute blast to make, and I'd like to become more involved. I had a great time on TSoRC just getting coffee and filling buckets of water and running to get props and soda and such... I'm not skilled, but neither am I picky. :) If you need an extra pair of hands for something, let me know. I'll try anything once, and I'm eager to help.

Congratulations to the 48 HFP winners. In my humble opinion, you all did a fabulous job.

Best Regards,

Anyone have some cheap-ass ideas for how to hoist a Lowell DP about thirty feet in the air, and a cameraman about ten? Anyone willing to lend a jib for credit and copy?

We're doing a low-budget shoot on Friday night ("The Statement of Randolph Carter") and being able to solve these three problems would be great.

Filmmaker Gus Van Sant Stumps for Movie Rebates

OPB News

Van Sant Stumps for Movie Rebates

By Colin Fogarty

PORTLAND, OR 2005-03-23 (OPB Radio) - Movie director Gus Van Sant asked Oregon lawmakers Tuesday to give filmmakers like him rebates on the cost of movie making. The House Revenue committee took testimony on House Bill 2191, which would allow filmmakers to save money on state taxes.

Van Sant told Salem Republican Vicki Berger such cost saving measures led him to film the movie "Good Will Hunting" mostly in Canada.

Vicki Berger: Mr. Van Sant I have to tell you I'm a huge fan. And you have broken my heart by telling me that Good Will Hunting was filmed in Toronto and no Boston.
Gus Van Sant: Actually, that was split. And part was Boston. But the other part, the large part, was filmed in Toronto to save money.

Van Sant is a board member of the Oregon Film and Video Office. A similar bill failed in the Oregon Legislature two years ago because of concerns over the cost to the state budget.

GALAXIE PICTURES is currently developing 'Unfiltered', the directorial debut for Creighton Vero, screenwriter of the indie cult hit 'Spun'.

For more information contact: pete@galaxie-pictures.com

SYNOPSIS:

Teenage Sherri, a new arrival to Lake Charles, Louisiana, gets a rude awakening as the locals give her a slice of real Southern hospitality, small town style. Included in her Lake Charles initiation are some hard lessons on friendship, family, and bigotry—not the kind made of ephemeral remarks and incidental ostracizing of outsiders, but real and vicious institutional racism, the kind that ends in murder.

Sherri arrives as the locals prepare for the funeral of Mary, the town’s Contraband Days Celebration Queen. With her death begins the shattering of the perfect picture of southern hospitality that she represents. Grieving is glossed over in favor of panic about the town’s quickly evaporating marijuana supply. What’s really died is the smiling welcoming south, and its warmth and hospitality are quickly replaced by a rapid growth of weeds.

Then the ensemble cast of Unfiltered gradually unwinds into a hard picture of gritty southern life as facades of tolerance gradually peel / crumble away. What’s revealed is the stuff that’s usually swept under the carpet.

Volunteer crew for sketch comedy show for cable access show.

We are a small comedy group that has been making a sketch comedy for cable access.
We have finished the script for our third show and we are hoping to find some people wanting to be behind the camera.

Its mainly been a one man crew and I’m ready to start making the show look much better.
We will be shooting with a DVX100A and other equipment will come from PCM.

We are not looking for more talent we are looking for crew.
I would prefer someone who is familiar with Portland Community Media aka Portland Cable Access. Some experience being on a set and an easygoing attitude very important.

I'm an ex-film student and right now interning at Picture This Products.
I do have some experience but I am by no means a pro.

Being how this has been a one-man crew pretty much all positions are open for grab.
We mainly do all our shooting on Sundays. If you’re interested, open on Saturday, like to laugh, and enough working on video projects please e-mail me.

Understand that there is no budget we simply to it for the shear enjoyment of the process.

The PDX_based H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival needs submissions!

The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival needs submissions for the 2005 year. Especially hurting is the lack of shorts based by or inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft and or addressing themes of cosmic horror as specified on the website.

www.hplfilmfestival.com

The entry fee is only ten bucks, which is a lot cheaper than most film festivals out there.

Current guests include Patti Smith, Christopher Heyerdahl, Stuart Gordon, and Joseph Dougherty.

Pimp this URL around -- the more films the merrier!

I have a Sony handicam (dcr trv30) and for some reason (I still suspect I've hosed a setting), the computer no longer recognizes the Firewire port. Other cameras work great on this computer, and this camera doesn't work on other tested computers, so I really think I've localized it to this camera.

I found one fellow online who had the same issue, and he reported sending it to Sony, who charged him, and returned the unit "no problem found" and it still didn't work.

So, I'm looking at local places.

Although, if y'all have any experience with Sony handicams and can possibly suggest what I might have done, I'd appreciate that.

I am a indie filmmaker/web designer on the east side of the state looking for something to pay the bills while I make a film. I will cheaply help you create a kick-ass site for your film or production company. I work fast and creativley. Check out www.sonsofgunsmusic.com for an example of my work.
Acting Career FAQ - Representation

Agent? Manager? Do It Yourself?

I recently got an email (one of dozens I've gotten on
this subject) asking me if I could - "explain the
difference between an agent and a manager and which
would be better for me to sign with - to get my career
going?"

Here's my answer:

Dear *****,

Neither an agent or a manager can help you "get a
career going."

The concept that a powerful man or woman can step in
and help you skip all the hard work involved in
starting an acting career - is a "fairy tale."

There is no short-cut to the top of show business (or
even to the middle for that matter). There's also no
Great Pumpkin or Easter Bunny.

If it could be done this way, then agents and managers
would simply pick any actor out of the thousands of
headshots they get every week and turn them into stars.

It cannot be done this way - which is why agents are
so unresponsive to unsolicited headshot mailings.

The good ones are pros and they're not going to waste
their valuable time trying to accomplish what they know
cannot be done.

Their businesses are similar - but not the same.

One sells a product. The agent is a sales person for
the product known as YOU. Sales people (agents) judge
their how well their business is going by how much
money they make. A really good sales professional likes
to make lots of money.

If your product is not saleable (one that people aren't
ready to buy yet) then a sales person won't make a lot
of money selling it (you).

Not surprisingly, agents are coldly business-like about
this part. Until you've managed to start your career
yourself (making money as an actor) don't expect any
really good sales people to be interested.

Managers are just what the word implies. The manage
things. Mailings, bookings, transportation, job offers,
promotion - the day to day business of YOU. (But keep
in mind that in most markets, they are precluded
by law from seeking work for you.)

The top managers are usually the top managers because
they manage very successful careers.

In the past two decades the professional manager class
has had its own difficulties with an influx of "bottom
feeders."

The worst of these are outright crooks, whose only goal
is to separate you from you money or your credit card
with no intention of helping you in any way.

Almost as bad are the ineffectual show biz hangers-on
who rent offices and go about the business of "signing"
practically anyone who walks through their door - then
what they do is they send out your pictures to every
little thing listed in the Breakdowns.

It's just postage.

Since these folks are generally clueless themselves,
they will submit you for stuff you aren't right for.
This is a good way to get labeled as a "clueless"
actor by the casting people.

Many young actors are fooled into thinking that they
must have a manager, any manager - that it's "good
business".

It isn't.

In reality you are signing an agreement to give someone
25% (or more) of your income after YOU successfully
ESTABLISH YOURSELF as an actor who makes money.

Bottom feeders spend a great deal of their business day
writing threatening letters to collect money from actors
who have realized their mistake and don't want to pay 25%
of their income for someone to do ineffective mailings.

The big boys (and girls) in the management game, are
just like agents when it comes to money. They want to
manage a "going concern" and they spend all their time
looking for the next "big thing."

Think about that.

Professional managers make a boatload of money when
they manage to sign on with a Vin Diesel or J-Lo - isn't
it reasonable to assume that they are LOOKING ALL THE
TIME. In fact, they hire people to look - they've got
part-time, secret lookers on their payroll.

Believe me, If you have what they want - if you are a
going concern with a name that you've made for yourself
- they know their managing skills will take you to a
whole new level (making LOTS of money) and they get a
big chunk of a LOT - then, believe me, they will seek
you out.

3. Most importantly, as long as you continue to
believe that your main job is looking for someone else
to help you "build" your career -- you won't be spending
enough time doing the crucial things you need to do
yourself to build your own career.

This is a very bad tactic which results in frustration,
wasted years and, ultimately, failure to achieve what
you want.

If you don't concentrate on doing your part it's
unlikely that you will ever build your business into
something big enough to be noticed by a good agent or
a good manager.

In other words, by all means keep looking for a sales
staff, and a management team - but don't neglect your
business while you're doing it.

Hope that helps.

P.S. A lot of you have written to asking me how to get
the free "Hello Pages" (Over 6000 Show Biz contacts -
casting directors, agents, managers, web sites, film
festivals, acting teachers and coaches, etc.)

Here's how it works: Go to my site, scroll down to the
VERY bottom of the home page and click on "FREEBEES."

When you get to the freebees page, sign up for my
free newsletter, Hollywood How-To, which is all about
your acting career and comes to you once a month.

You will get an email from me asking you to "confirm"
your subscription (this is so people won't sign up
other people without permission) when you confirm that
you signed up, you will get another email (in about 24
hours) that gives you the download instructions for
The "Hello Pages."

I know it's a little round-about, but I hate being
accused of sending a famous prepared meat product.

Wouldn't you?

Have a great week and ...

PDX Indie Film Meet for 2005?

I've just been introduced to Tribe.net and I'm catching up on all the relevant tribe postings.

I've read a post from December of last year regarding the first Portland Indie Expo and wanted to know if there are plans for one this year?

And, if so, anything I can do to help? Can I build a website for the community (if there already isn't one, that is)? Help organize? etc.

I need an Editor

I'm new to this tribe.net thing. So there's no picture and not much of a profile. But I'm looking for an editor for a short film that I wrote and directed and recently completed production on in LA. It was shot on mini-DV, mostly on a sound stage.

I'm from Portland, but haven't lived here for awhile and I'm looking to collaborate on this with an editor of some experience and a keen eye for the screen. This is a character-based film that utilizes a lot of subtlety and silence to tell the story and will give a good editor a chance to really flesh this out to the finished product. Unfortunately, I can't pay for this position. Thanks. Look forward to hearing back. Peace

Right on the heels of The (first ever) Portland Indie Expo, the Indie Group is pleased to follow up by...

Announcing the December Indie Meeting

THIS WEDNESDAY!
December 8
7pm
at The Hollywood Theatre

This screening and discussion will focus on the short films of DJ Hupp and includes the premiere of "Cooper & Brady Turn Pro." Having seen several of DJ's short films, I encourage Indie Group members to check out his work. As usual, the screening is free, and all are encouraged to contribute to the potluck with an item of drink or food or plates and utensils.

A downloadable flyer for this event has been posted to the "files" area of the Indie Group site.

The Hollywood Theatre is located at 4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd., on the
cross-streets of NE Broadway and 41st Avenue. This is two blocks north of the Hollywood Transit Center, which you can get to via MAX or TRI-MET lines 12, 66x, 75, or 77.

there is a crepery at 3120 NE William with a digital projector.
the owner has given me the go ahead to have a free showing of short movies.

i was thinking about the third Saturday of January at 7 o'clock.
the only catch is that the shorts can't be "R" rated and he wants to watch them first. so there has to be a submission processes.
But I was hopping to keep it open for anyone with a short, no longer than 30 minutes, to show their goods. That is unless the short is really, really good, than it can be longer.

does anyone want to come and take part?

We're running on a tight budget, basically making a feature film at a used car price. We've had a heckuva lot of fun at our other movies, so it'll probably be pretty fun working on this one, too.

Our other movies: www.petting-zoo.org/Movies.html

Our latest movie, Innsmouth Legacy is premiering at the Lovecraft Film Festival at the Hollywood Theater on October 1/2/3. That's in just a few weeks! If you like Lovecraft stuff, horror, amateur movies, or some unholy combination of the above, I hope to see you there!

Cheers,
DV Cam comparison

Okay, I'm gonna get a DV Cam, and would like some feedback on the models I'm considering.

In the upper price range:
-Panasonic AG-DVX100A
-Canon XL2
-Sony HDR-FX1

In the lower price range (and probably more realistic if I get a Powerbook at the same time):
-Canon GL2
-Sony DCR-VX2100

From my limited research, these are listed in my order of preference, but I want the best I can afford.

Opinions? Experiences? Feedback?

Hollywood Theatre attacked for showing tonight

Dear fellow members of this list - I thought that you all should know
that, while Richard Beer had hoped to join in the Portland Indie Expo
this evening, he will need instead to be at the Hollywood Theatre.

He will be absent because the Theatre has become the focus of an attack
by a national conservative Catholic group named The American Society for
the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property. In fact, you can visit
their website at http://www.tfp.org/ and see the form email message that
they are asking their members to send to us.

Our venue is being rented by a local nonprofit support group for Lesbian
and Gay youth called SMYRC (Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center),
which is screening a film called "Jesus Has Two Mommies." The film
(which also screened here last year without any controversy whatsoever),
is based on a play that depicts one woman's vision of an alternative
Christmas story.

Thus far we have received more than 1,300 email messages apparently from
all over the world. Many of these are condemning Richard and me
personally to hell and other things. None of them understand that we
are personally not responsible for the making of the film nor are we the
ones responsible for choosing to show it. Our non-discrimination policy
requires that we not discriminate against groups trying to rent the
Theatre and the first amendment assures those groups that they may show
their presentation without censure.

We hope that everyone enjoys the Expo this evening. Please know that we
would rather be there with you, but recognize the importance of
protecting our patrons, the Theatre, and everyone's first amendment
rights.

What script writing softwares do you all use for your projects? I've been using Sophocles (http://www.sophocles.net/) and really like it. Figured out a way around the export block in the demo version and now I save my scripts as pdfs. Who just uses a word processor? Anyone still on a typewriter?

Lovecraft Film Festival -- sneak attack!

For those of you who make short movies and/or can make short movies under the gun, AND can keep it inspired by or adapted from the works of H. P. Lovecraft, RIGHT NOW is the best time to shoot that movie, or edit that footage, or otherwise assemble it and send it to the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival:
http://www.hplfilmfestival.com/homeflash.htm

Although the deadline has passed, two factors play in your favor. First, I've just found out that there is a hole in the schedule that a late-yet-germane entry would fill handily! Second, this is the last year where there will be NO entry fees for this film festival.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the work must be adapted from or clearly inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft. Go to the website and sift through the archives for some ideas of movies that have been accepted in the past.

This hole will not be long-lived, probably expiring on or around September 1, so NOW IS THE TIME.

And, of course, please pass this note along to any filmmaking groups to which you might belong. The more the merrier!

Grants -- any samples?

Anyone know where I can see some samples of grants or money requests for films, etc.? I gotta shamelessly hit some folks up for cash and I sure could use a sample letter upon which to base my request.

Thanks!

Extras needed for Unremembered, indie film, June 18th

We are still looking for some more extras to be in an independent film, Unremembered, that begins production in the Portland, Oregon area on Friday, June 18th. Beginning at 9:00am on that date we need extras to pretend to be Physics Grad students for a few takes of a short lecture. Plan to meet at Portland State University, Lincoln Hall, Room 205 at or slightly before 9:00am.

This is not a paid opportunity, however, all extras have their names appear in the credits at the end of the movie. In addition, they can receive a copy of the DVD at no charge when the movie is released for distribution.

If you are interested or if you need more information, please write me at greg@gregkerr.net

Anyone know where I can beg, borrow, rent, or steal one? I don't mind spending a little money, but I don't need to go thousand-dollar-crazy to get one of those "perfect recreations".

Thanks!

Anyone every visit www.archive.org where the entire Prelinger collection is posted for free downloads, in editable quality? I'm using some for a project of mine and thought it might come in handy for some of you. Check out "A Day Called X" where Portland is evacuated.

"Prelinger Archives was founded in 1983 by Rick Prelinger in New York City. Over the next twenty years, it grew into a collection of over 48,000 "ephemeral" (advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur) films. In 2002, the film collection was acquired by the Library of Congress, Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division. Prelinger Archives remains in existence, holding approximately 4,000 titles on videotape and a smaller collection of film materials acquired subsequent to the Library of Congress transaction. Its goal remains to collect, preserve, and facilitate access to films of historic significance that haven't been collected elsewhere. Included are films produced by and for many hundreds of important US corporations, nonprofit organizations, trade associations, community and interest groups, and educational institutions. Getty Images represents the collection for stock footage sale, and some 1,600 (soon to be 2,000) key titles are available here. The collection currently contains over 1
