Wickerman Burning -South Central PA

Hi!
I wanted to let everyone know about a new burn, and I am part of the planning team for it, so my opinion is biased!

The burn is "Wicker Man," to be held Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day weekend; and we have a setup weekend, the weekend before. We are trying to lay the groundwork that will grow into a full-on burn, with an amazing site, roads for art cars, a $4,000 art grant budget and plans for a stupendous effigy.

We will be using Four Quarters as our site, which has the rep as one of the most edgy and progressive non-profit camps on the east coast. They have given us their full support for Wicker Man. Four Quarters has a piped water system, hot showers, flush toilets and of course port-a-potties. Buried power lines for their bio-fueled camp generator, a covered stage and three swimming holes. Lots of camping under tall trees and out in the sun too. And 2 miles of gravelled roads. Four Quarters is located 100 miles west of DC and Baltimore, just off I-68.

We want to develop a burn that is art focused and will support big art. And one that has a vision of the future of burns that is sustainable, ecologically responsible and leaves behind a small foot print. Thus "Wicker Man;" the old celebration of the Green Man and Green energy. We already have over 20 theme camps and art projects registered, and we are just beginning our announcements. We plan to have three "Theme Towns." "Sound Town," where we can run sound all night long, like the Gaian MInd psytrance festival held at Four Quarters. "Sin City" down along the river, a cure for what ever ails you. And "Center Circle," a place for nature and spirit; held inside the amazing stone circle at Four Quarters. (Yes, there is a circle of standing stones and they are BIG!)

And then there is the Man. Planned at 35 feet high our man stands on a round Temple to the Spirit of Fire, a big enough room that you can enter and place your own art and offerings to the burn. The roof of the temple is a deck upon which stands the Man, and people can stand too.. His belly is the Upper Temple, with room for just one person at a time. Each of his arms will hold a flaming fire pot, and we hope, will move as he burns. This is a huge project and we are looking to get as many people involved in his construction as possible. Ground breaking for the Man is Friday, May 9th, and then the next two weekends until he burns.

Hi i'm bryan, i manufacture fire tools in the los angeles area and am traveling to central ohio at the end of october, i am a columbus native who has been on the west coast for 6 years playing with the mutaytor and making tools for several of the LA fire troupes, Mutaytor, cirque berzerk and lucent dossier to name a few, i make eating torches, poi, staff, and dancing bowls as well as the occasional custom piece... if you are interested in purchasing tools or commissioning custom work please get in touch with me soon, i am taking orders this week and next in order to have the pieces finished by my travel date, hope to get to know some of you! ~b

I have been so amazed at the response to be apart of our first year I thought we would be lucky to get 1 band…. But the list just keeps getting longer. Thank you to everyone working hard to make the following theme camps happen!!!

The Ka-tet (Earth Guardian Base Camp): We are a group of friends brought together to create a camp of fun and openess. We will have a participation dome with games tounaments during the day and projection art at night. It will be very interactive and will even have times for other people to present their art.

The Laser Dome: In a nut shell our camp is a psychodelic laser experiance contained within a 42' diameter 5/8 geodesic dome, with a 18x20 tent enterance. Inside the dome is a 7000 watt sound system, with 8 medium powered red & green lasers, and other intelligent lighting. Our dj's provide a healthy mix of trance, house, breaks, and hip-hop. Also every day at dusk we project psychodelic movies inside the dome during what we call Cryptik Theater.

Hum 'n Hug North: Wander into our realm where a gazillion musical instruments are everywhere waiting to be picked up and played, waiting to have strains of music of many sorts coaxed out of them. Jamming. Consorting. Communing. Fun. Come play - come jam - come hug! Originally started at Transformus, the Southeast Regional Burn, the Ohio contingent of the group looks forward to being a part of Scorched Nuts!

Camp Happy Hour: It's always Happy Hour with us! We provide concoctions of all varietys to quench your thirst. We have a comfy chill space, a little bit of lawn art, and tons of fun!

Tribal Belly Dance Camp: Fun, Funky & Powerful tribal belly dancing. Including workshops and performances!

Blinky Blinky Blinky: I've done a bunch of art on the Playa, The L2K ring, the L3K ring last year, and the hypknowtrons. I'll bring the hypknowtrons and set up some very nice blinky art.

Camp Pornyata: An adult themed camp bringing gifts of spanking open pornyata's to recieve adult toys, gifts ect. 18 and over only.

Radical Faerie Camp: We are a mixed gender queer group of folks that would love to create queer safe space at the gathering.

The Butt Hut: Massage, tattoo caning (a form of rhythmic massage), alternative health

So, here's the deal, right now there are three definite camp members and one maybe. Not a lot of people, but there's still time to plot and plan. So, this year we're working on a camp that will consist of a double dome design (one dome for the public and one for our private camp use with a fire barrell....which would heat the public dome during the evening), a stage for performances of any kind (if you want to contribute a poem, a dance, a play, etc....do, do, do it), and at least one effigy contribution (we're workin' on designs and procession plans at this time). Now, if you're wanting/planning/hoping to go and would like to camp with others from the upper midwest/great lakes area, just let me know. Also, if you want to contribute to any of the above projects, again, let me know....same with questions, comments, and critiques. Oh....and if you want to stay with us, but aren't able to be there the whole time....don't worry one bit about it...we'll make sure that you have a space to call your own.

Where to start?

I just joined this tribe, 'cause I am really interested in learning about fire performing(don't know if that is the right way to put it). I am a belly dance student and I just love fire. I just don't know where to start, where to learn, what I need, etc. I am absolutely new at this(although I did twirl fire baton once MANY MANY moons ago). Please point me in the right direction. Columbus Roller Derby wants fire performers

Hi All! Columbus Roller Derby wants a fire performance for their half time show. I am waiting to hear details but I was wondering if any of you would be interested?!! If so we should start organizing a show, like picking music and choreography. I figure something heavy it is the roller derby ya know. Intro to me....

Hi folks!

I'm Shelly, and I'm currently in Logan, about an hour SE of Columbus. I went to OSU (twice) as did my hubby. I love Columbus, and would love to get to come up and spin with ya'll some time. I'm looking at Saturday to see what's up with the family here, so I'll see what the universe holds for us.

I spin staff, and am working on poi, tho I've only lit poi once. My virgin staff burn was June this year, but I've been spinning staff for a long time. I also just got my wands, so will be working on transfers. I'm comfortable with some basic transfer stuff, and would like to eventually eat fire. Fire breathing, tho, scares me, so I don't currently have plans for that. I'd also like to learn fire sword at some point. I'm coveting a cool pair of swords from Bearclaw, but right now, they're cost prohibitive.

Hope to meet you all in person some time soon.

Fire Safety

Yesterday I had the opportunity to talk with a fire fighter and he said that as long as we have a fire extinguisher with us, to show that we have the intention of keeping ourselves and our environments safe, we are all right. He suggested avioding performing in living rooms, but as long as we have some safety awareness there aren't any state-wide rules we need to follow.

I think the best tool in fire safety is the towel. Of course, the towel has to be laid down or around the burning leg or grass to smother the flame and keep it from oxygen. But what do I know, I'm always lighting the fires, not putting them out.

Pyrokinetika Fire Academy

Some of you already probably know this, but Dayton OH (about an hour south of columbus) is home to Pyrokinetika Academy of the Fire Arts. We play together once a week, and our members come from Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Richmond, IN. Check out our site: www.pyrokinetika.bravehost.com .
