Greetings Everyone, I am seeking books of Occultism in theory and practice. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank You, Simmah

Re: Recommend Books
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 6:29 AMam currently digesting, distilling and sorting through "Ceremonial Magic & The Power of Evocation" by Joseph Lisiewski... He seems pretty dogmatic and like a bit of a drama queen, but he emphasizes hard work and serious preparation which i agree with... he dislikes the "NEW AGE" (in which he includes the G.D.) and seems to enjoy using valuable text space for insults...
but a good book and valuable resource...
i also enjoyed NewFalcons illustrated Goetia...

Re: Recommend Books
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 8:42 AMAleister Crowley's _Magick in Theory and Practice_ (the third part of Book 4). Think what you will of the man himself, he did an excellent job of gathering information together in one place. It's a bit dated and requires some sifting through obscure verbage and heavy-handedness, but is well worth the effort.
I'm quite fond of Lon Milo DuQuette's books in general and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Re: Recommend Books
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 10:38 AMwhy the 3 books? im in the midst of these and find 90% to be archaic and disociated from reality as i know it...
any discussion on the usefulness of Agrippas three books... the number section (especially 7) seems way outdated... to me... although the basic theory behind it seems workable, it also seems summed up in the "as above so below" and "like attracts like" magical theorums...
all that said i have to admit im only part way through book 2... -

Re: Recommend Books
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 12:24 PMI am still in love with
"Mystical Kabbalah"
by Dion Fortune
even after all these years...
her writings are actually sane!
She goes more into practical application in her fictional works (much as Crowley did)
So look into her "non-fiction" for the theory
and her "fiction" for the practice.

Re: Recommend Books
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 2:18 PMI second 'Mystical Kabbalah'. I would also highly recommend 'The Kybalian' by the Three Initiates. I carry a copy with me 24 hours a day.

Re: Recommend Books
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 9:05 PMI view it as a classic occult book. There is a wealth of knowledge in there. Modern occultists, I find, often made the mistake of tossing out the old books that hold many of the roots of the science-philosophy. -

Re: Recommend Books
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 9:45 AMi agree that it is good to know the roots... and it a good exercise to sort thr crop from the crap... im having a good time with Agrippa and the 3 books are helping me escape the minutia of my dayjob...
i also recomend them, if you ahev lots of time on your hands... -

Re: Recommend Books
Fri, March 14, 2008 - 11:35 AMI play a game somewhat like bibliomancy with my inner-instructor...
i read all sorts of things, some occult-ish some seemingly mundane
and there emerges themes and brilliant connections
that are what my current lesson-plan is trying to convey...
I have picked up random series of books before
and had them all reference each other and the "perennial philosophy"
it was one of the first things that turned me on to
the practical applications of synchronicity.
as for archaic yet entertaining and often informative authors
Eliphas Levi's "The Key of the Mysteries" has quite a few gems in it...
if you can accept that he is often playing Crowley-games
by denouncing things that he might actually be recommending
and informing you how to do...
here is his best quote ever ...
"Fluidic Phantoms are the Abortions of the Astral Light"
