workshops

I am really new at this and have high anxiety as a result. What is the best way to get something out of the workshops as a beginner? I tend to be so self-conscious and get caught up in comparing where I am at to everyone else. I am really dedicated to learning but Is there a way to take notes so I can take what I learn home to practice? Any ideas, short of taking a few valium would be helpful. Did anyone else experience this when they started? Thanks

YES!!! I did experience that and still do. Workshops are hard!! I usually only retain about 1-2 moves or ideas per workshop as a whole. I go for the experience, I go to feel new again, I go to push myself. Some people take extensive notes and work really hard to remember everything. I don't like to sit down at all during a workshop so notes don't work for me. It's a little different for everyone. What I think helps beginners at workshops is to understand that no one is watching you or judging you. Everyone is so focused on learning that they don't have the time or energy to pay attention to anyone but the teacher. And it's not a competition, it's a workshop. Everyone is there to learn, so in reality, we're all at the same level at a workshop because we're all students. Don't sweat it! Just keep going, the anxiety gets easier as you go, don't expect so much out of yourself! Everyone else is dorking out or feeling just as new to the workshop as you. That's why we're all there :)

Well said, Jenna! I remember my very very first workshop: I was brand spanking new and had no idea how awesome the instructor was (only now do I count myself lucky). Workshops are for everyone to go and feel like a student. No one is looking at you or judging you and it is perfectly natural for you to feel fluttery. As someone who has taken the sit down and take notes and the get up and dance routes, I full on recommend the get up and dance route!!! Afterwards, I try to take some notes and write down everything I remembered (which is usually the things I really liked) - but really, just MOVING is soooooo beneficial, especially moving different than you usually do so you can take stock and figure out what you like and don't like. Just go with the attitude of having fun and you'll do fine every time! :)

    Hey there..
I totally agree with Jenna and Jeanne...
    We have all been there....
    Also,
I say this in my classes too, but I believe that it is the same for work-shops too:
You are here for You.. Use the teacher as a Reference Only and then focus in the mirror (if there is one) on Yourself, only You. Don't worry about what Anyone else is doing, this is your time for YOU, to learn something new, to better yourself, build yourself, challenge yourself and mostly to have FUN, relax.. Go with it and see what happens... Never give up, remember why you are here...

Now when it comes to troupe work, that is a different story. Then you focus on the group as a whole organic unit, Complementing each other and building each other...

Everyone functions different, but I find that taking notes After the work-shop is very helpful. I keep a little Dance diary of moves, ideas and combinations that I loved and remembered from work-shops, videos (and sometimes you-tube).. Then every once in ahwile I will review them for fun or share them (that helps me learn the best, when you have to explain something to someone else, then you understand it better, I have found)...

Hang in there, it only gets better!!!

Stand next to me and we can be anxiety queens together. I do appreciate the above comments. don't think valium will help, but am considering TFT (Thought Field Therapy) if you are familiar with that...
