Memorial Candle Bellydance News

Just a reminder, if you haven't been to any practices yet but want to participate, you need to attend the remainder of the practices. In fairness to the girls who have come consistantly, I would like participants to have attended at least 3 practices. And, ALL participants MUST attend the Sat, May 31st 9am practice at the theater in order for you to participate. For out of towners that I have made prior arrangements with, the video is almost complete and can be sent to you very soon! : )

The official Chinese Auction Thread

So it's official, we got the letter to ask for donations for the Chinese Auction. I volunteered to organize, so here goes. As you know from my haflas, I'm a Chinese Auction basket whore. I love it, I think it's fun, and the buzz it creates at the hafla is always awesome.

Here's the difference for this event.
1 - At the haflas, we advertise it as an Arabian Auction, because the baskets are bellydance themed. At this event, I feel that we should keep the baskets as appealing to the general public as possible, because in contrast to our haflas, the majority of our ShiCu audience are not bellydancers. Hence, we keep the name Chinese Auction. I'm not saying a few bellydance-ish baskets aren't welcome, by all means. But I feel the majority of the choices should appeal to everyone and anyone. We want people to buy lots of tickets.
2 - At my haflas, I buy 90% of the baskets out of my pocket. Usually, I spend about $300 on baskets, and generate about the same amount in ticket sales. In other words, the way I've done it in the past is not a huge money maker. I mostly do it because the crowd loves it and I enjoy doing it. The difference here for this event is that we will be not be buying/making our own baskets, we will be asking for donations only, so all the money from the tickets can go straight to charity.
3 - I feel that the baskets need to be really exciting for this type of event. This is not a hafla. This is a charity benefit, where people will be dressed up, wandering around with a glass of wine and a wallet to spend money. We want them to drop that money towards the cause. The more exciting the basket, the more tickets they will buy. We need to think big, special, and unique, but something that appeals to everyone. We want people crossing their fingers that they will win that basket, in fact, we want them to put several tickets in just one basket. Plus, the more baskets, the better. I'm shooting for at least 20.

We're coming up close on this event, and in order to secure 20 phenomenal baskets, I'm going to need some volunteers to help collect donations. Even if you volunteer to secure just one basket, that is a huge help. Volunteers need to contact a business, really talk up the event and the CAUSE of the event. We need to give them the official letter so that they can write off their donation at tax time. We need to give them more than the incentive of "it's for a good cause". Just a warm fuzzy feeling isn't enough for some people. We need to offer free advertising for their business through either listing their name as a sponsor in the program, or setting up a table at the event where they can place business cards or promotional materials. We also need to not be afraid to ask for a big donation, and to get them to commit to creating the basket and picking it up in time for the event.

Listed below are some of the ideas that I have come up with. I'll number them.......if you see an item that you really want to do, please list that number and state that you will volunteer. If you have connections to these businesses, all the better. If you have more suggestions, I'm all ears!

I have scheduled the next committee mtg next Wed. May 7th @ 7pm at Panera's on upper Peach street. On the agenda of things to cover:
~candle sponsor forms~please bring what you have gathered so we can make sure it's printed in time for our program.
~advance ticket sales~ how is it going, ideas to sell more, collection of ticket money already sold, need more tickets, etc.
~fliers~do you need more, or ideas where to hang them, etc.
~promoting our event effectively~ more brainstorming on effective ways to promote and updates on what we already are doing?
~chinese auction~review what is collected and/or confirmed so far, discuss ways to get more donations, discuss delegation of tasks.
~volunteers for night of event~ discuss what we need people to volunteer for and ideas of who can do that. I have volunteers for ushering already, and at least one person to take/sell tickets at door (need more for that), volunteers for after reception, pouring wine/booze and tending to food table, bouncers (ha, ha), fire extinguisher people on hand, etc.

Please come with any questions, or ideas you may have!

So, I hope you all can make it..come..get some good coffee and food and have a good time helping out with this awesome event.

Memorial "candle bellydance" sponsor forms

Just a reminder, May 7th is the deadline to hand in your forms with names and money for the candle sponsorships so that they can be printed in the program. I will give you a receipt upon receiving your forms and money.

Unaware of what this is about...you can have a name/names of a loved one afflicted with cancer in the Shimmy for a Cure Gala for a min $5 donation per name. It will be written in honor or memory of and the person's name and dollar amt donated. The first performance of the evening will feature a Memorial candle bellydance, the candles will remain lit on stage in honor/ memory of cancer victims/survivors. You can message me privately if you're interested in more details regarding this. Again, all proceeds will benefit the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation.

Just an idea, to try getting more sponsors, try writing down 25 names of people you know and call them to see if they may be interested. Thanks for your help with this!

Out of the "Clubs and Organizations" our team, Bellies for Breasts, is in a *very* close second. All we need is a little help to catch up, and we're sure to come out first in our category!! :)

Our team of six belly dance students has really worked hard to raise money for Y-ME. And while it's fun perform for the walk participants and to engage in a little friendly competition as we read about how the other teams are doing, we know that there are women, their families, and their friends who face the reality of breast cancer every day. As dancers, we are so fortunate to have our health and to be able to share the joy of Middle Eastern music and dance. So fundraising for Y-ME is fun for us, but we take it seriously, and we couldn't do it without the support of the ME dance community, our family, and our friends.

We are also so grateful for our dance teachers who make it possible for us to spread the love and joy of belly dance on Mother's Day.

I've been told the booth fits a max of 4 people comfortably, so if we have more than 4 volunteers, would could break it up in shifts if need be. The time we have the booth is from 11am to 6pm. Candle dance practice!

Thank all of you that participated in the first candle dance practice, I thought you all looked darn good for a first run through! I saw it on video and it actually looked great. I'm sure once the candles are lit, it's gonna really look awesome! I hope you all liked the song..I picked it because it's serious (not too depressing), yet strong and graceful...appropriate for this type of memorial dance! I want you all to feel proud to be part of this dance, it will be very special and hopefully something you will always remember being a part of!

Next practice will be at Northcoast Dance Studio 12 noon, Sat. 4/19, I will try to keep it around 1hr long so as to not hog up your Saturday!

Program/corporate sponsors

Annette, you may have thought of it... in leau of the corporate sponsor needing ID numbers and the like, how about asking for "program" sponsors... Those that want to make a larger donation and be recognized in the program in the manner of 1/4 page, 1/2 page or full page logo/advertisment..... just trying to think how to still obtain larger donations and give the recognition of doing so.... it would not even be limited to corporations or businesses... it could be an individual or family. For Example, a donation of $200 will be recognized in a full page, $100 for half page or $50 for quarter page.

Promoting ShiCu at Millcreek Mall

We can use their "Community Booth" to promote our event, sell tickets, obtain candle dance sponsors and sell tees. There was a few different dates she offered me availability and I tenatively picked Sun. May 4 from 11am to 6pm. They prefer we don't wear costumes or dance. I think they were afraid of it being too risque (note, this booth is directly across from Victoria's Secret, LOL.) The booth is fairly small and a max of 4 people can fit comfortably in it. Let me know if anyone is interested in helping with this. There are other dates too if need be, I just need to get back to her with a confirmation.

-Minutes-

-Candle forms- let’s really do as much as we can with these forms as they are going so well so far! It really speaks to people to be able to honor their loved ones in this way, so what better way to raise money for this cause! If you need a candle form or money envelope to set out at work or pass around to your friends, just let Margo or Annette know. When we turn in our forms to Annette, be sure to sign off on your form and Annette can sign to receive the money for the fundraiser.

-tentative date for a bellydance showcase to promote the ShiCu Gala show is May 9th at Borders. Can’t sell tix or t-shirts here but can hand out flyers and promote the event!
So far our volunteer performers are:

-Deadline for selling your Gold tickets is May 1st. Pm or call Annette (814) 460-4556 for gold tickets…they are going fast!

-Candle Dancers- Annette is working up the details on where we’ll sit after the dance and how we’ll get there. Candle Dancers do need to purchase a seat for the fundraiser and our first rehearsal is scheduled for Sat, April 12th, 4:30 Pm at NorthCoast.

-Need two people to man the Chinese Auction, and two people to serve as the ushers…any volunteers?

-T-Shirts- look great!! On sale for $15.00, all proceeds go to the Kansius Foundation! Sizes S through XXXL. Let’s sport our shirts, sell them, and spread the word!

-Tickets- Anita passed around tickets for us to sign out and sell to friends/family/anybody/everybody! Reg. Seats $15.00, Gold seats $30.00 min. donation and include up-front seating and wine/cheese/chocolate meet and greet reception with the performers after the show at The Playhouse until 11Pm! Help sell tickets by private messaging Annette or Anita. Our goal is to pack the house!

-Candle Sponsor Forms- Margo passed out forms and will upload the pdf here so people can sponsor candles in honor/memory of cancer survivors/victims. - Zafira Workshops- Both workshops have been moved to Sunday to be sure our out-of-towners can join us! Cost is $25.00 per workshop, early bird registration (which will be up soon on www.shimmyforacure.com ) All proceeds from the workshops will be donated to the foundation. Workshop topics are “Supah’ Saucey” and “Zafira Choreography.” Workshop times will most likely be 11am-1pm, and 1:30pm-3:30pm.

-Backstage on show night- Anita and Margo discussed planning backstage and being our go-to people behind the curtain.

A suggestion for the program

Would it be possible to include an explaination in the program or the introductions of dancers to the audience of styles of dance, dance history/ movement, appropriate response (yips, zags and such) and the like??
When I have been announcing the Gala, most people have a raised eye brow as soon as they hear "belly" dancing. This would be a great opportunity to educate everyone of the styles and make them feel more apart of the festivities.
Just a suggestion that may already have been considered.

I was brainstorming trying to think of how to get more exposure for the Gala and sponsors.... Would it be possible to come up with local meetings and go speak on ShiCu behalf, maybe offer a mini class to motivate Gala tickets? For example, Red Hat Societies usually meet monthly or any kind of membership meeting (Moose Club, VFW, Erie Turners, Zem Zem, ect). What about going to Borders or Starbuck's on a designated date (promote with flyer in window)? Or even go to Wal Mart or the grocery stores (they have girl scouts!).
I noticed at Jr's that there was a lot of interest! What about setting up at Plymouth for an evening?

Candlelite Memorial Bellydance!

Viki and I have been hard at work creating a cool choreography for this dance that will start off the Shimmy for a Cure Performance May 31 at the Erie Playhouse. For those interested in performing this dance, rehearsals will start on Sat. April 12 from noon-1pm and continue at that time thru May. Rehearsals will be at NorthCoast Dance Studio on 12th/French St in Erie PA. This dance is open to anyone with some bellydance experience and we welcome your participation! You will still need to purchase a ticket ($15) to the event to reserve your seat, however, this will grant you a special back stage pass to enjoy a special meet the dancers reception and indulge in a decadent wine, cheese and chocolate spread! Here's your opportunity to be part of a meaningful performance..let me know if you have any questions or would like to participate! Please let me know by April 1st so we can account for you in the choreography.

For out of towners that are interested, we plan to make an instructional DVD and have written instructions on choreography so you can participate too.

The first act of the Gala will be a Candle Bellydance, in honor/memory of loved ones who are survivors/victims of cancer. Interested people can donate a min $5 donation to have the name of their loved one (and the dollar amt. given so there are no questions) on the program. If you are interested in helping gain these sponsors, Margo is working on a form that can be used to track these donations and they will be passed out at the next meeting. Also, for out of towners that may be interested in this, we could email you the form too!

Regular tickets $15-open seating

A lot of you already know, the Shimmy-a-thon at Sherlocks's Parkplace is CANCELLED due mostly to the fact the timing of this event would have been too close to the main "Shimmy for a Cure Bellydance Gala". Promoting BOTH events so close together would probably be overwhelming and confusing to the public. We are VERY MUCH LOOKING FORWARD to the the Bellydance Gala on May 31, doors open at 6:30, show starts at 7:30 (be sure to get there early to get a good seat and shop the awesome chinese auction) at the beautiful Erie Playhouse Theater-all to benefit the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation!

Here is what we have planned but is not final yet. I need your help in making the decision to make this a go!
This event will be part of the pre-fundraising intended to defray costs and benefit the Shimmy for a Cure Bellydance Gala and ultimately the John Kanzius Cancer Research Fund! We are looking to have a this event at Sherlocks on April 12, doors open at 5pm, Matty B and the Dirty Pickles to play a set, then have the contest, which there will be 2 winners. The longest shimmier, and the shimmier with the highest $$ sponsorship. The way it would work would be contestants will need a $50 sponsorship the enter contest (that's easy, ask 5 people you know to sponsor you for $10 or 10 people for $5 and so on). There will be a short instructional on how to shimmy, and to get ya warmed up, then we'll start. Depending on how many people enter contest, we may break it down into 2 "heats". We will also be treated to some awesome, local bellydance performances! Don't want to shimmy, come anyway to enjoy the band and cheer on your favorite contestants (there would be a $3 door fee for non contestants)! Hopefully we will have some celebrity bartenders as well.

Because there'll be some cost involved in putting this event on, I would like to get a better idea of how many people will be interested in participating in the contest. This will give me a better idea if I should forge ahead with this idea. Please pipe in if you want to participate, have questions, or comments!

Raising money and Programs

I was thinking lately about how we can raise money not just for the charity cause, but for the cost of the event. I think of all the times I've gone to local plays, high school musicals, etc. Think of the programs that you get there. The back of them is nothing but ads for local businesses, and thanks to our sponsors lists.

I forget......Have we actually discussed planning a program for this event? We obviously want to be able to list our schedule of events, our performers, and info about the Kanzius Research Center. If we send out letters to local businesses, asking them to donate some money to our cause, we could in turn either allow them a certain amount of advertising space or list them in our Thanks to our Sponsors page. Depending on the size of their contribution could determine how much ad space they receive.
For example, local Erie resteraunts like Barbados Pizza, Bootleggers, or The Park Tavern....businesses like construction companies, law offices, hospitals, etc.

Whatcha think? Anyone have any experience doing this sort of thing, and how do we go about it?

I am currently working on performance lineups, (got some AWESOME performers in the wings already) but will give those details when things are for sure. Also, we are in the works for a booty kickin workshop. Again, details on that as they are finalized.

There will be vending, chinese auction and hopefully a henna artist and who knows what other crazy suprizes!!

I don't remember if anyone has addressed this but has anyone spoken to John or someone from his camp to make sure he's okay with this type of fundraiser? I think it's an awesome idea, but sometimes certain organizations/causes are picky about HOW folks raise money for them.

Any ideas for location for shimmy contest?

I spoke with marketing director from the Millcreek Mall, she said Erie idol is the last event they're having for awhile due to major renovations they are starting. The first thing to go will be the main stage. So, does anyone have any other ideas for a location?

Ideas for a shimmy off contest?

At our first committe meeting, we discussed fundraising ideas for the charity event to help defray costs. Has anyone ever heard of having a successful shimmyathon . ex a person interesed in shimmy contest would gather sponsers. Last one still shimmying is winner..Sound like fun? Anyone interested in participating in this event, feel free to pipe in.
