If there is an event going on and cant be there just look for a flat open area and you will find me/us. I will be there unless there is a major storm or something. I will have extra hoops, staves, poi, and probally some extra water.

This will be a reocureing topic so I will just post when I will be there and would encourage others to do the same. New commers and newbies are especially welcome to share spinning, conversation, and a good time.

Hi all, Hoop jams are an excellent way to build hoop community. We recently started a weekly hoop jam in Raleigh and it is an amazing success. We've been doing it for six weeks and we have from 4-8 drummers each week and 15-25 hoopers. I want to tell you how I organized it so you can do it too if you'd like.

First, I had to find a place. My friend Rebecca and I went to several public parks and we ultimately chose Pullen Park. Pullen Park is a park that has a lot of kids during the day but is pretty quiet in the evenings. It has a big, flat place where we can hoop and no houses around to complain about the drumming. There are picnic tables, a water fountain and a big shady space. I asked the manager of the park if it would be okay if we had some drummers and hula hoopers meet there each week and he gave us his okay.

Then I solicited drummers. I contacted the Raleigh Drum Circle as well as local drummers I knew and asked them to help out. Turns out, they loved it! They love drumming for dancers and were anxious to get together and, so far, there have been more every single week.

Then I posted an announcement on the Raleigh at Play tribe, the Raleigh Hoops tribe, the yahoo groups for Carolina Bellydancers, Raleigh Drum Circle, Caro Burn and on Craig's List. I also put up posters around town at the colleges, the Whole Foods, places like that. You could solicit:
Charlotte Soul: http://tribes.tribe.net/charlottesoul
Charlotte, NC: http://cltnc.tribe.net/
Charlotte, North Cackalaka: http://charlottenc.tribe.net/
Best of Charlotte: http://bestofcharlotte.tribe.net/
plus Carolina Bellydancers and Caroburn. I'd also post to the Transformus tribe.

(I'd also recommend putting up a poster at the World Dance Center as well as other dance studios, etc.)

I also take flyers with me to any music thing that I take my hoop with me to hoop. I gave out 30 last Saturday at the Budweiser Outdoor Music Series, which brought out at least 10 new hooprs this past week. Also, bring fliers to each jam so that people who come can give them to their friends. Make sure you invite passers-by to play too.

I also recommend bringing some beater hoops to share. At least 10 of various sizes. This way, people in the park can play. But be prepared to sell people hoops or tell them how to make them when they get into it. I didn't do this to sell hoops but I've sold a lot of hoops since turning people onto hooping at the Hoop Jam.

The Raleigh Hoop Jam is Wednesday evenings from 6:30 til dark. It's nice to have something to do during the week. Also, folks travel a lot on the weekends so it's harder to get people to come then I think. Plus, the parks are full of kids! I love kids but I prefer to hoop with at least as many adults as kids.

So, this is just a suggestion. I'm happy to offer any insight I can to help you get started. What do you think?

I am happy to announce that the Chill Spin Skillz Exchange will be returning to Transformus 08!

The Chill Spin Zone is a low-key, safe place for spinners and dancers of any skill level. It is both a learning and a teaching environment as well as a non-competitive play space. There will be music, workshops, classes and freeform fun throughout the weekend. Look for us in the Elyssium Fields.

The Chill Spin Zone and Skillz Exchange is brought to you by Philosopher's Stone, Bubble Camp, Ripe and Juicy and many wonderful and giving teachers from all over Mysteria. It is a unique opportunity to teach, learn, connect and share in a cooperative and safe space from a variety of amazing teachers and performers. It is also a great opportunity to make friends and build community. And the first step to organizing it is a Call For Teachers!!!

Everyone has something to teach. Everyone has something to learn.

What do you have to share? Mysteria needs you!

Please let us know what you'd be interested in sharing. If there is a time or day that's better for you, let us know that too. Once we get everyone's feedback, we will make a schedule of workshops that will be posted online as well as in the Chill Spin Zone. TITS will also be announcing upcoming workshops throughout Mysteria.

Here is a list of the workshops that were offered last year. Let's use this as a framework to build upon. Feel free to share something new and different or sign on to teach one of these amazing skills:
- Staff
- Double Staff
- Fire Fans
- Hooping
- Tribal Dance
- Poi
- Fire Eating

Please indicate what skill level you are interested in teaching (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) and sign up even if someone else has already volunteered. More is better! If there is something unique about the workshop you want to teach, give us a little information about that also.

So what do you have to share?

> Moving on Up Hoopshop in Charlotte - May 17, 2008
>
> Hello Queen City hoopers!
>
> There's a growing hoop community in Charlotte and I look forward to
> sharing some techniques and tips to take everyone's hooping to the next
> level. We'll be warming up on the core- both directions- and getting
> comfortable changing our center of gravity then...into the skills! I'll
> be showing ways to get more comfortable on legs/knees, working
> isolations off the body, jumps, chest and shoulders, body rolls and
> whatever else folks are ready for. Basically a large download of
> hoop-info to charge up your practice for the summer. Come join me to add
> new moves, awareness and prowess to your hoop repertoire. While I will
> go over some basics in the beginning and will have time to work with
> folks individually at the end, this will mostly cater to those who have
> some hoop experience already. That said, most of the off-body work we'll
> do is fun & accessible for absolute beginners. Hoops will be provided
> for use and for sale. Please bring water and wear comfortable yoga-type
> clothing. Expect fun, breakthroughs and bumpin music;-)
>
> Please send me an email to register your spot, as space is limited. I
> hope to see you there!
> Subject: Charlotte Hoopshop Feb. 23!
>
> Hello Charlotte hoop enthusiasts!
>
> My wanderings have me back in Charlotte for a stretch and I have
> scheduled a long-overdue hoopshop. I hope those of you I've taught in
> the past have continued your spinning. The
> beginning of a new year is a great time to reconnect with your hoop and
> enjoy fun, centering movement.
>
> This one will be held at Open Door Studios on Saturday, Feb. 23 from
> 1:30 to 3 pm, cost is $20. Directions can be found at
> www.opendoorstudios .com
>
> This hoop playshop will cater to beginners while also giving
> variations and suggestions to challenge experienced hoopers. I know
> there may be a wide range of skill in this group, and am open to moving
> quickly towards more intermediate skills if that is the direction the
> group is heading.
>
> We'll be starting with the basics of hoopdance: Moving through core
> hooping, pacing, freeing the feet, stalling, and moving up and down the
> core, working with space Within the hoop and exercises to promote ease
> and grace. I'll introduce two types of lifts to take the hoop from the
> core off the body. A 'jam' portion at the end will allow me to circulate
> through and give individual attention according to skill level while
> also demonstrating more advanced moves.
>
> Hoops will be provided for use and will also be available for sale.
> Space is limited, so please pre-register by contacting me or through my
> site at www.spiralhoopdance .com
>
> Hope to see you in the circle,
Any hoopers are welcome! I'll be there this Sunday and maybe can meet some of you I've not meet yet.
Lori

So I've been looking for a place we can all get together and spin on sundays and thanks to Mona we have one. It's Ultimate Gym @ 2019 N. Tryon. We talked to the owner today and he's cool with us using the place on sundays since they are closed anyway. We are looking at about 4pm every sunday starting next week. We decided on $10 a person a week, al of which goes to the owner to pay for his time and the rental of the space. I feel $10 is a cheap amount to pay to have a place to get together!

So if you wanna come spin we are getting started next week and every week thereafter (mostly). Get ahold of me or Mona and come out and jam!!

Hoop Convergence April 11 - 16, Carrboro, NC

SCHEDULE (subject to change:-)

Times, arrangements and final teacher details are still being negotiated.
Some classes/activities will be for everyone. There will also be break-out sessions where we divide to meet in smaller groups.

FRIDAY: ARRIVAL

To welcome you to Chapel Hill, NC, we will offer an evening for arrival and orientation. This evening will allow time for a deep breath, casual hooping, nourishing potluck, camp or bunk set-up, meeting other hoopers and orienting for the days ahead.

SATURDAY: THE HOOPING BODY

Saturday will focus on the hoop, our bodies and the relationship and possibilities created between the two.

Circle Up: Saturday we will begin the introduction to the circle with a forum on hoop craft. As the basis of the practice, the hoop, in its varying dimensions, weight, aesthetics, grip and balance affects the experience of hooping. Hoops of differing sizes and weights open new doors for movement possibilities and thus physical, mental and spiritual benefits. There will be time for sharing thoughts on the craft and perhaps make a new hoop.

Movement Workshops: 11 am – 4 pm

Classes on Saturday will focus on foundations, injury prevention (Ariana), flexibility & strength training for hooping (TBA), Handwork (Caroleeena) and compiling a movement inventory (full group activity.)

JAM: Integration time at Town Commons with live music 5 – 9 pm (All ages.)

SUNDAY: COMMUNITY / SHARING & PRESENTING THE DANCE

Sunday’s themes will focus on taking the hoop into the community. We will focus on ways to facilitate hooping in your community, event planning, stylizing the hoop dance and dressing for the occasion.

Circle Up: Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, will host a morning forum with the assistance of Jewels, creator of Hoops for Haiti and Caroleeena who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica. This will be a great time to envision a community event or social service project for your hometown or a sister community.

Circle Up: In the interest of community, on both local and global levels, Alicat, will host a forum on Sustainability and Hooping. You may be able to educate your community with some of these ideas when you return home for Earth Day.

Weaver St Market Jazz Bruch: 11 am – 1 pm

This is a special spot for us Carrboro hoopers, as Spiral & Jewels began a ritual of getting dressed up and taking bundles of colorful hoops to this space to complement their weekly music events. We believe that this has been a key component to promoting the joy of hooping in Carrboro, NC. This event is free to the public, offers great brunch and beverage options and hosts live music. Great for all ages.

Movement Workshops: 1 – 5 pm

Save some energy because we will be going straight from brunch to workshops for the afternoon. Workshops will feature advanced moves (Stefan of Groovehoops), Street Hooping aka Busking (Revolva), Spinning (Jewels & Spiral) and HoopYoga (TBA.)

Craft: late afternoon/early evening

Sunday evening will feature a crafting, trading and costuming event. Annie Weinhart, of Annieland, will offer a no-sew costume techniques workshop in the late afternoon. This will kick off the costuming and crafting portion of the Convergence. This evening will be an opportunity to create, envision or trade pieces of hoopable clothing or patterns. After much consideration, we don’t believe it will be quite workable to have 30 sewing machines in one room, but we will have a few for easy sew patterns in addition to other fun possibilities. We will let you know how much fabric you need to bring for the workshop. Please begin to collect the fun clothing or chunks of fabric that no longer suit you, but may be passed on or traded.

MONDAY: PERFORMANCE

Monday’s workshops will highlight performance aspects of hoopdance. While not all of us are professional performers, each demonstration for a class, group or community event involve some elements of performance and presentation. Let’s face it, whenever we go out to dance with a hoop, we are on display and are communicating with spectators. Hooping is a form of communication, thus considering these elements of the dance is like honing your conversational skills.

Circle Up: Performance Theories, Tips and Personal Stories

Movement Workshops: 10 – 2

Workshops will feature Choreography (Stefan), Engaging an Audience (TBA), Partner Techniques (Ammon & Marria)

Make-Up Techniques: 4 pm

Christine & Patika will lead us through a workshop on make-up application to highlight our natural beauty prior to a super sweet jam. Professional performers and make-up artists, they will surely host an informative and fun pre-ball party.
Full spectrum of needs to be announced.

JAM: Hoop hop set 7 – Midnight (Final details to come.)

With its bumping bass kicks and lyrical flowetry, Hip Hop has had tremendous influence on some of us Carrboro hoopers. This evening will feature live instrumental hip hop jams for your spinning pleasure. This may also be a time to offer a performance to the circle of hoopdancers. Part of the evening will also be DJ’d with a variety of styles of grooviness.

TUESDAY: FIRE

Circle Up: Alicat will facilitate a forum to Compare/Contrast Fire Hoop Designs Safety. Several fire hoop designers will be present to show their fire hoops and tell stories of their creation. Ali will introduce other designs (for some not present) and discuss the differences, advantages, disadvantages, etc. You will also leave the Convergence with an extensive safety packet compiled by Caroleeena.

Craft: After viewing a variety of fire hoop designs and meeting some crafters, we will offer this time for a hands’ on experience of fire hoop craft. This will be a collaborative project as creating a fire hoop is a labor intensive endeavor. We hope to introduce materials, tools, techniques for wick wrapping and complete one hoop to christen during the evening burn!

Movement Workshops: Afternoon

Workshops will feature Fire Hoop practice, Twin Hooping (Jewels & Spiral), HoopYoga (TBA), More (TBA)

Fire: After Dark

Fire Dancing and Drumming~ Gathering around a fire is a sacred, traditional ritual. As humans, we have lost some of our connection with fire in modern times and thus lost respect for its tremendous power of sustaining, transformation and healing. Fire is a powerful element with powers of creation and destruction. We will offer time to initiate, perform and share fire dancing experiences to burn away that which we no longer need and send prayers, hopes and wishes for the future through this dance. We hope this evening will be fiery, fun and ritualistic as we channel our Shiva energies. Incredible rhythms provided.

WEDNESDAY: HEALING HOOP DANCE

Wednesdays themes will focus on Cultivating Creativity, Nurturing Spirit, Healing Potentials of Hoopdance, Working with Special Populations and Social Outreach.

Circle Up: Hooping as Healing Art and Social Service

Writing Your Hoopdance (Revolva), Hooping as Sacred Movement (Jewels), Hooping with Special Populations (Ariana & Laura), Hooping & The Chakras (Tracey), More TBA

Closing ceremonies TBA

We are also including some business and teaching information. Some info will be included in the orientation packet for you. Circle Ups on these topics TBA. More details are being finalized everyday. Stay tuned for teacher bios and more details on events.

REGISTRATION
Full event, five days = $350 (This includes all workshops, jams, forums)
Three days = $250
Day passes = $95
Class or event passes will be released as times are confirmed and may vary depending upon the event. Some events will be free and open to the public.

Hoop Convergence ~ Friday April 11 - Wednesday April 16, 2008

Please join us for the very first national (hopefully International!) Hooper’s Conference -- The Hoop Convergence.

The Hoop Convergence is the bringing together of a wide variety of hoopers from all over the world to create a synergistic learning environment where we will address all aspects of hooping. There will be panel discussions and workshops with a variety of amazing teachers and hoopers from all over the United States.

The Convergence will be held in beautiful the Hooper Haven of Carrboro, NC. Everything in this wonderful town is in walking distance and already many local hoopers are opening their homes or offering camping on their property to visiting hoopers from all over the country. Make plans to join us now.

To learn more, volunteer, make suggestions or arrange for a place to stay, please join the tribe Hoop Convergence at: http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

Here are some of the amazing workshops and activities that are confirmed as of right now:

HOOP SKILLS WORKSHOPS
Currently, Spiral, Revolva, Caroleeena and Jewels are all confirmed to teach. These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you have an idea for a workshop, please join the Hoop Convergence Tribe and share it with us! http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. We will accommodate what we can given space availability and group sizes. Teaching or leading a panel will enable you to attend other workshops for free. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

Prices and other details will follow soon. New items are being added everyday!

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

For more information about the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Peace and Dance (April 17 - 20, 2008), go to: www.shakorihills.org

Again, if you are willing and able to participate in any way, please do! Your input and expertise are essential. So please join the Hoop Convergence tribe today. We hoopfully hope to hoop with you soon!

A group of us Hoop Teachers are putting together a Hoop Convergence Workshop, Training and Reunion next year in NC, probably in April or so. We are going to bring in hoop teachers from all over and teach hooping specialty-related workshops. I am going to be teaching handwork I think, how to dance with your hands in pretty ways so that you don't have chicken arms. (I know you've seen chicken arms. Elbows in at the waist, hands sticking straight out. The (hen) bane of hooping. Hee hee hee...)

Here's a link to learn more about the Hoop Convergence. We already have several really good hoop teachers signed on and we're going to do workshops on costuming, fire, theory, footwork. handwork, theater performance and everything else we can think about. We'll probably put people up in our homes or set up a big camp ground (Hoop Camp!) so the only expenses will be eating and the workshops. Plus we'll have other fun things, probably a Hooper's Ball and a big old covered dish one night. Probably a fire with drummers one night also. Check it out:

If you have suggestions for events or workshops, please share them. Jewels and Ali and Spiral and I are meeting in January to start firming things up so the time is now to put in your suggestions! We can make this into whatever you want but we need your input.

I'd previously used 1" tubing, but I bought a smaller one. Last night I made a 36", wow it's small! It a lot more difficult to keep (althought it's not taped yet, so it's slippery) but man you can get some speed! So far, I like the 3/4" tubing b/c it's easier to get my hands around, maybe about a 38" in a diameter.
It'll be either at Jade's or Jim's studio
So far (on my end I have Jason, Daynya, me for sure

Let us know if you interested
We do have a min. of 10 and max of 20
We should have no problem meeting the min.
I found Paktika on tribe if you're interested
http://people.tribe.net/patikastarr

Yah! In time fore transformus!!!!!

Below is an email from Patika to Jade describing the details!
Patika says...

This is how my workshops are structered. You find the space, I have been having a lot of sucess doing them in people's yards and at their clubhouses. This is especially nice because you can have some beer or wine, snacks too and make it into more of a party. You fel more connected to the spiralling energy of the hoop when actually on the earth, and no over head. The only downside is rain, in a bad rain we would have to reschedule.

So, if you are interested in doing a workshop in this manner then they way I do them is so:

The workshop is $30.00, it is an intensive, it is 2 and a half hours which includes a short break and I will do a performance at the end to give everyone inspiration. I need at least 10 girls to make it worth my while and no more than 20. We need a big open grassy space. Sunday's are great. It is nice to do them around 4:00pm when it is a bit cooler. I have enough hoops to bring for people to use, if they don't have their own. I also bring some of my handcrafted hoops for sale as well. You would get to take the class for free for organizing it, I prefer cash payment for the class from everyone.

My workshop is a Hoop Dance Intensivie. It starts with the basics and goes all the way through intermediate. If there are some seasoned hoopers, I have some ways to challenge them throughout the class as well. This is probably not a class for the very advanced hooper though. We start with on body hooping, move to off body hooping and then we concentrate on combinging moves, the focus of dance is carried throughout the workshop.

Contact Jade (Battleax) or me if you're interested

Hi everyone. My name is Caroleeena and I live in Raleigh but I grew up outside of Charlotte and I return to that area frequently. I've been waiting for it to wake up to hooping and fire arts and I'm so glad to see this tribe.

I've also been teaching hoop for several years now and I'm interested in teaching a dance shop in Charlotte this fall. I was wondering if ya'll might be interested in that? My skills, in addition to hooping, include fire hooping, fire safety, dance integration and hooping costuming. Also, I'm a great teacher. The amazing hoopers and poi spinners that I've taught are a beautiful testiment to that (though I could never take credit for each individual's personal flavah, I am pretty good at helping them find and explore it.) I am proud to say that my students are fantastic and well rounded hoopers -- and I'd like to pass that on to students in Charlotte too.

There are several avenues we could take, depending on the interest. We could have a hoop making workshop, a hoop dance weekend, or a single hoop dance workshop. I would need to find a space but an outdoor space could work just fine. Could anyone help me find a space? I'd love to spread the hoop love there and also connect with other hoopers for when I visit. What do ya'll think?

Thanks so much for this tribe and for bringing this vibe to the Queen City. The Queen is going to love hooping!
