Cheap Hors D'oevres?

topic posted Tue, November 28, 2006 - 9:52 AM by  Elizabeth
I am wanting to have a Christmas party--maybe from 3:00--7:00 or so. Warm, cheap drinks are no problem. But, I'd like to have a table laden with tasty nibbles. Any great ideas?

A slice of Mozzarella with a tarragon or basil leaf on it and a half of a grape tomato on top, drizzle in a smidge of olive oil.
    Is nummy.

Deviled eggs! You can't get much cheaper than eggs, mayo, and mustard. I've found it's one of those things that people don't want to admit liking, but they ALWAYS get gobbled up!

      Other cheap ideas:
Olives--if you have a grocery store with an "olive bar," you can pick up an assortment fairly cheaply.
      Frico (fried parmesan crisps)
Bruschetta (easily made by toasting bread in oven) with a marinara sauce or a bean-based dip
Pita with hummus or spinach dip
Quesadillas--you can make 'em fancier with whatever fillings you can afford
Finger sandwiches--crustless bread triangles with cream cheese or butter mixed with herbs, cucumber, watercress or nuts.
      Bacon-wrapped water chestnuts

quiche is actually cheap and easy to make... buy costco eggs, buy cheap frozen spinach, use sale milk from walmart... make a huge shallow pan of it and use cookie cutters to cut it into interesting shapes, or cut into nifty diamond shapes with a knife.

    Stuffed mushrooms!

Plain ol' white mushrooms work well...pop the stems out, chop 'em up with onion, garlic, butter, herbs, maybe some toasted nuts (toast some pecans...spendy, but toasted the flavor of just a few will go a long way). Saute together, add a splash of white wine or dry sherry to deglaze. Mix in some cheese (parmesan or maybe some blue cheese crumbles) and bread crumbs...season to taste, stuff in mushroom caps, and bake at about 400 degrees until nice and toasty.

You could also use wild rice, cous cous, barley, all kinds of things for the stuffing. Usually the plain white mushrooms are pretty cheap in the produce section, but super savory and satisfying...holiday comfort food.

Stole this idea from someone else --

Dried apricots with a schmear of bleu cheese on each.

    Fantastic with wine!

Wow, you guys! What great responses! Thanks! I have a few I can add:

roll-ups--take a whole wheat (doesn't have to be) tortilla, smear with cream cheese and pesto, or guacamole and shredded cheese, or anything else you think of. Roll the tortilla tightly, then cut into one inch slices.

Cheap nuts from Trader Joes. They have good-sized bags of honey roasted peanuts pretty cheaply. They also have other great sugared nuts, including some cinnamon almonds which are delish, but not so cheap if trying to feed lots of Holiday mouths.

My mother likes to unwrap and slightly warm a package of cream cheese. Then she puts it in a bowl, pours over it one can of black beans, one can of corn, (both drained, of course) and a jar of salsa. She puts the bowl in the middle of a large platter and surrounds it with corn chips.
