Eating Cheaply in the City?

I've found that shopping for fruit in the Mission saves me a bunch of money. Anybody got advice on other ways of beating the system to get yummy food that isn't expensive? (trash cans not being an option...)

In the mission, the Salvadorean restuarants have pupusas which are kind of like a thick corn torilla filled with meat/cheese/beans and served with a vinegar carrot & cabbage slaw they cost $3.00 and make a good meal. Try Panchita's on 16th Street.

Also Taco Trucks are pretty cool. A taco will probably run $1.50 and two of those and you are good to go!

If you are wandering through Chinatown, the little bakery looking places that sell dim sum to go are very cheap! You can get a pork bun for less than a buck. You can try a variety of dim sum for a couple of dollars.

Also on Clement street you can find cheap dim sum and more fruit stands that have asian veggies...

Also, the Rainbow Grocery store has bulk bins. You can get ingredients, spices, herbs, teas, pastas, rices, etc in just the size you need instead of something pre-packaged.

Of course, mission taquerias like Taqueria Cancun and El Farolito always have huge portions, meal-sized burritos, nachos, or quesadillas for about $4, and good dollar fresh strawberry and tamarind juices. Mission between 16th and 20th has a pretty sizable concentration of such places.

Oh, and the Supermercado on 16th just north of Mission St. has the cheapest fresh produce I've found. Usually 4 lbs bananas for a buck, couple lbs of tomatoes for the same, etc. And there's a dollar store nextdoor where everything actually IS a dollar (sewing kits, food, dishware).

The White Horse Tavern on Sutter between Taylor and Montgomery has free appetizers for happy hour on Monday nights. I made a meal out of it for months. Five bucks for dinner and a beer is unbeatable!

My favorite cheap meals are usually at little taquerias (try the lower Mission too, way down towards Daly City), random Asian places in the Sunset or Chinatown where you can often find a chow mein or lunch special for ~$5 OR in the Tenderloin too (how could I forget the Tenderloin?!?), OR along Ocean street btwn 19th & City College.

For a sheer mass of food, I've been impressed by La Corneta's super tacos to go, because they put them in a styrofoam container and then fill it up with toppings - rice beans meat tomato lettuce sourcream guacamole, more than if you ordered it for sit down!

OH OH OH, and San Jose Taqueria was recently praised as having the best tacos in the world in Budget Travel magazine. By some food professional who thinks he knows a thing or two about tacos.
Mission St., just south of 24th
      open late on weekends

    go to half moon bay.

have a hike on the beach or up montara hill. then go to the produce shop on 92. they always have great produce for half the price here in the city.
the fish shop next door is great too. always barter a bit, i usually go during the week when they are slow, especially during the winter. they always give you much more than the asking price as well.......

its also sooooo fresh and usually from some of the smaller local farms.

Chutney at Jones and Geary (or is it O'Farrell) is super awesome cheap Indian food. I go there quite often and everyone that I have every taken there has loved it too!! I believe (someone else who frequents the restaurant told me this) it was recently rated as one of the best cheap eats places in the city.

For Vietnamese Mia's on Clement St. is ace. El Zocalo's further up on Mission St. is great for Salvadorean. La Corneta Taqueria is on 2834 Diamond in Glen Park very close to the square.

Emmys Spaghetti Shack? Uber hipster central but not at all cheap. The food was mediocre at best last time I was there. I would say a great place for yuppies with no taste to go slumming.

Yeah, I'm not too fond of Emmy's either.

I do love the food at Tu Lan on 6th as stated above, but I've seen to many things while dining in to have a sit down meal in the place again. Great place to grab some fresh spring rolls before a night of drinking at your favorite 6th Street drinkery. Ask for the fish sauce along with the peanut its good stuff.

There is a (supposingly) German restaurant accross the street from the movie theater on geary and van ness. I ate there for the first time a couple of nights ago with a friend. It is a real interresting place and inexpensive for the amount of food and i enjoyed my plate :D
The decor is awesome, they have an extensive choice of beers there and a happy hour that i think it around $3. The only down side is that it is kinda like being in a train station with the door always open and people standing online right by your table but if you sit closer to the bar or toward the back of the dinning room, it is more private! it gets also pretty busy.
A potatoe, saukraut, turkey, pie and layer cake kinda place :D NOt for vegans or vegetarians for sure! but they do have salads!
