Re: rammed earth ( EARTHSHIP)
Sat, March 11, 2006 - 3:30 PMI packed 700 tires for mine, used the decomposed granite subsoil for soil-cement fill, and after screening, base coat stucco. Also for slip formed gardens and floor. Tires were free, decomposed granite free, my labor free. The glass was re-used from a big hotel, beams for notched timber glass wall and ceiling were local, aluminum cans from soda drank here, rebar and misc. wood from jobsite scrap piles. Used course/pour method with ripped expanded metal lath and chipboard scraps, and 2x10 scraps screwed for a day or so, laser leveled. Stable and weatherproof all the way up. Rainwater catchment into used 425 gal pickup bed poly tank. Woodstove backup, compost toilet and solar shower. Solar oven, PVs, charge control, fuses, batteries, 12VDC shurflo pump, sinewave inverter, guitar amp half stack, CF lights, 1 large and 3 small gardens for year around vegetables. Insulated roof vent and screen door for ventilation. 1 sq.ft. glass to 4 sq. ft. on floor. 450,000 lbs. thermal mass, it's been 6 years ago and I still feel it!!!! Tile accents and base, 8 niches from small tires, and sun lines, faked tile floor (joint tool @ 1', dyed). Acrylic roof, stucco dyed to match nearby rocks. Used loader/backhoe w/ 14" and 9" buckets, 25 hp diesel, 3.5 cu. ft. cement mixer, Bosch 22.5 lb. demolition hammer with compactor face, skilsaw, powered by inverter. Sledge hammers, plumbing, carpentry, drywall, concrete, and electric hand tools, and expert knowledge and experience--with the undeniable support and help of my wife and young son, and God. Total cost, $20/ft, equiped and furnished, exterior, $36 interior floor minus mass and other walls and gardens(true liveable). -

Re: rammed earth ( EARTHSHIP)
Mon, April 23, 2007 - 9:31 AMYour post brings back memories. My first paying job was building a rammed earth house for a guy named John Dillenger (no relation to the gangster.)
He poured a standard foundation, then set up 3 or 4 foot frames and we kept adding dirt and tamping it down. It wasn't a big house, but it's insulation would have been awesome for the Arizona climate.
I'd never heard of adding tires to the mix. Did you chop 'em up or use 'em whole? The dump near my house has a huge tire depository. I always wanted to get a bunch of tires and build a tire house (for tactical weapons training purposes.)
Are you using swampers or AC to cool the place in the summer?

EarthShips aka "earth & tire houses"
Sun, January 25, 2009 - 7:29 PMWe had 3 separate (duplicate) threads running on EarthShips. I've moved the posts here & consolidated the threads into this one.
......................................................
Site with good descriptions of several Michael Reynolds' books on Earthship building.

I took a look at this

While this sounds like cheap housing, I am sure there are other costs involved. if you have better information, please share that with us all.

If you ever have the chance, stop by the Earthship Visitor Center, just outside of Taos NM.
There is an earthship set up as an office, which is open for tours.
A small donation is required. There are TONS of ideas available, and it is worth the few dollars.
It is very cool to see one in person, even if you have read up on the concept.
However, I would really like to connect with an everyday resident of an earthship, to get the real story, as opposed to the party line.
If I had the cash, I would really like to use their nightly rental program sometime, but it is priced too high for me.
In any case, there are many concepts involved in the design and construction, that I plan to include in my (so far away)
future home.
I am convinced that daily expenses to maintain a well designed earthship, would be close to zero.
I say close because of the expense involved in maintaining the battery banks.
I have yet to put any numbers to this.

"The Diary of an Earthship Build in Kodaikanal India 2009.
This website documents the entire build of an earthship in Kodaikanal India by Alex Leeor from UK. I have been involved with earthships since 2002 with Earthship Brighton and have spent some time with Michael Reynolds in Taos New Mexico. I have no formal training or building experience and am documenting this build as a personal diary as well as a useful resource for others who are doing a similar thing. I am building an authentic earthship with all of the systems and components that allow sustainable living, off grid with all the comforts of a modern home.
Please be aware that every earthship must be planned and developed according to the local resources and climate. The basic earthship principals will stay the same, but details such as size, roof height, orientation and window sizes will all differ according to the ambient temperature and other factors. If you are making your own earthship then you will find a lot of information that you can apply to your own build, but you should always consult an earthship specialist before performing any actual work.
Earthship Karuna is designed as a 37 foot roundhouse with high 13 foot walls and second floor mezzanine. The building is not bermed with soil or insulated more than the walls and gap filling since we are in a temperate climate. There will be extensive grey water treatment planters within the building, and power derived from solar, hydroelectric power and generator as backup. I am building it in a organic farm/guest house that has existed in the mountains of Tamil Nadu since 15 years. The past three years has seen the development of the community side of the farm. Currently there are three new builds happening, with this being the first and only true earthship in India.
The site was leveled between May -November 2008 and tyre ramming began in Early January 2009." -
