Shed Living

Howdy. I'm a newbie to tribe.net. I recently bought a piece of rural land in the mountains. The land is far from the grid. I want it to be an occasional weekend getaway, but I have no construction skills and little money and don't want to build an expensive structure that will be an open invitation to burglars and thieves when it is unattended. The permitting process in my state is very expensive and elaborate, so I don't want to mess with it. But, I don't want to build something that will be in violation of the building codes, in case I get inspected. I considered many cheap, alternative shelter options (yurts, treehouses, teepees, shipping containers, etc.) but finally decided to have an 8' x 14' shed custom-built off-site and delivered. This circumvents the building permit process. The shed will have a steeply pitched roof, a sleeping loft, a wood-burning stove, 3 windows, double shed doors on one end and a regular door on the far side. No plumbing or electricity. I am going to insulate it and finish the interior with a friend. 2 rain barrels will catch water off the roof, and I plan to build a covered porch off one side of the structure, which can later be framed in. A portable (and removable) solar panel and battery will supply power for 2 lights at night. An outhouse will suffice for the toilet, and I may have a well drilled at some point. If I do, it will have a hand-pump. This housing option is the simplest and cheapest one I was able to come up with. It also suits my sensibilities. FYI: apparently any structure over 8' wide is considered a wide load (in my state) if it needs to be transported via truck/trailer, thus it saves money to limit the width to 8 feet.

There's a thread posted somewhere here on shed living. I like those cabin looking shed's with the porches. Alot of people use them around here for hunting cottages. they finance, deliver and set it up for like 2,500. If I were a single man I wouldnt mind living in one at all.

I'm sure there are several married men around who wouldn't mind living in one at all. hehe

That has crossed my married mind. My barn is my favoriate place to hang out. I've thought about turning my loft into a small apartment. When I mentioned that to my wife, she got pissed off. lol

I've fallen asleep in the garage, working on motorcycle projects. Eventually, when I broke up with my then-girlfriend (gee I wonder why) I actually moved my bedroom into the back of the garage, and rented out the rest of the apartment to cover the bills! It was the most perfect living arrangement I ever could have dreamed of, as a single guy. I always had engine parts on my nightstand haha... I could watch TV and tune a carburettor on a running engine all from the comfort of my own bedroom!

Ah, good idea, Unknown. Yes, that is part of the plan. Another shed, and maybe a shipping container somewhere down the road. Gotta save my pennies first...man, I wanna find a way to build underground, too. That would be cool.

Those are cool cabins, Dave. Thanks for the link.

And Brent, my dad is married, and he turned the barn into a 1-roomer and moved in 5 years ago! Says he sleeps better ;-). He's still married...I don't ask. He's got power for lights and a heater, and a wet bar with running cold water (he never actually uses the bar, just built it to comfort himself I think). He can't wait to see my shed when it's built. Runs in the family, I guess...

I have known a few older married couples with either seperate beds or even seperate rooms. It used to be the norm. I always feel better when I have a place I can go to get away.
