I love vardos!
Have you been through the various links on that page? When you go through them, you find that most people are building them for SCA events (I think that's what the page is about, but still...), and that they are plain! I only found one that had painted designs on it (he used a stencil, but that's OK; it looks nice). Look at old, real Gypsy vardos - color everywhere! They expanded the space by using beauty. I think we, as a people, have lost beauty. It's too bad.
I'm tempted to buy a 4x8 trailer and build one of these to haul to Alaska to live in for a while. :-) I must have a bit of Gypsy in me.
