SOTS FUTURE VOL. IDEA/QUESTION

I just got my copy of SOTS vol 3 and in it Shoshanna mentions how nice it is to see that a dancer knows what instruments are playing and where to put them on her body (not a direct quote, she said something much more articulate).
I was thinking that this is a HOT topic in the dance community.
I've taken rhythm and movement from Suhail Kaspar and he is adamant about how someone should dance to the music. At the same time I wonder is this his opinion, or do other musicians feel the same. While I appreciate Suhail to a great extent, i feel his "rules" are a bit limiting.
I just wanted to suggest a segment on Musicality. Maybe get some professional dancers and musicians to discuss their idea of musicality. How they think a professional should approve the idea of dancing to each instrument?
I'm not sure that I'm making my idea clear, if anyone has an idea to go along with this it might help me find better words.
Anyway that was just my thought for the day :)

    hi there!

    the suggestion sounds really good!
may I ask you on the Sohail Kaspar dvd? I ve been looking at this one, too.
Could you tell some on what it covers, what level you recommend it for, how it compares to the main other rhythm dvds notably by Saida, Jenna, Tamra Henna?

    thanks!!

I do not have the Suhail Rhythm DVD, I took a week long workshop from him last summer at dance camp.
What I can tell you is that Suhail's rhythm and movement ideas a really good foundations in musicality for anyone from beginner to advanced. This is because his format is not based on skill, it is based on knowledge. he always says something like "you know already know how to move like a belly dancer, I'm just teaching WHEN to do each move." By this he means in relation to the rhythm of the drum, and the sounds of the other instruments. Buy his DVD I'm sure its fabulous. Ziva is a phenomenal dancer, and she is featured on his dvd.
I really did like his class. I felt that it added to my education in a very positive way.I also felt confused by his "rules" as they are slightly limiting. That is why I wanted to know what others felt about it, and other forms of musicality.
I do believe that rhythm and movement is a skill one can learn, and therefore it is an important topic in our community.

Yeah, I like the idea of advice on how to work with the music and "hear" what movement each instrument or phrase is calling for.

Ya! And I think the approach of hearing different perspectives is essential - as saying there is "the" one way of hearing and expressing rhythms is as if you say there is "the" one way of interpreting a painting. I think it could be very interesting to find the one musician/dancer hearing the music the way you do, or whose style comes closest to your personal one!
      I d love that!

I also think I saw on his website that Karim Nagi teaches a class in rhythm and movement. It would be really interesting to hear his opinion of Suhail's class, and see the similarities and differences in the two.

Karim was in Maine last weekend (I missed it--boo!) and taught a drummer-dancer connection workshop and a maqam for dancers workshop. Everyone gave rave rave reviews of both. This really is a fascinating idea for a DVD subject!

I agree.. the topic should be discussed.

I am a 'feel' type dancer - I go where the music takes me and try to pass this knowledge on when I can. Not so many dancers put that much time into learning the music or musicality - just the move how to's and costume how to's.
Dancer [people] don't hear the heart beat and the breath and the pulse [echo of the heart beat] in music and that each drives types or altitudes of the music...

I could go on.. but yes I agree it would be a good topic !

Perhaps Michelle could find someone, or herself, to do a "Rhythm for Dancers" DVD. I know there are are a couple out, but most cost to much for what they are, and only offer one way of interpreting each rhythm. It would be nice to have a musician and a dancer working together on a just a few rhythms, but offering several techniques for how to approach/interpret each one.

Karim is an AMAZING musician and teacher. Not only are his classes fun and interesting, but he is very articulate and is incredibly good about explaining music/rhythm/culture and dance in a way that we can understand. I own several of his DVDs already, and would surely buy more.

He gave an incredible finger cymbal workshop. To get that on a DVD, or a rhythm for dancers DVD would be awesome

I was fortunate enough to take both his finger cymbals and his cane class at Mendocino Dance Camp last year. It was Incredible! I can't wait to take his workshop this May. I'm definitely hooked on his style... and his personality. He is so funny!

I had another thought today... a segment on the BUSINESS Of Bellydance.
How to go about getting gigs (i.e. what to charge, where to look for gigs, should you make a 30 second commercial to advertise your skills?) how to start putting on your own shows/haflas (maybe even working up to festivals?) How to teach, the business aspects, like pricing, insurance, how to keep good, simple books?
