Hi Everyone
Lately festival organizers have been asking me if I am interested in being the official videographer for their events. I was hoping to get some feedback from you guys about how to proceed.
Questions for dancers:
1. Do you usually buy a video of your performance at these events? If you have a troupe, how many members buy a copy? Do you get a discount for buying extra copies (ie: $30 for the first one and $5 for each additional?)
2. What is a fair price for a professional video shot on a professional TV camera? How much is too much?
3. Do you expect your DVD to be burned on the spot and available that day? Do you expect to pay more if that is the case?
4. Do you know how to convert footage from a DVD into a format you can put on YouTube? Would you pay $5 extra to have your footage put on YouTube?
Questions for event organizers:
1. Do you pay a flat rate for a camera person for the day or are they a private vendor? Do you get a percentage of the profits?
2. Do you provide the blank DVDs, cases, labels, and DV tapes?
I think most dancers have paid up to $40 for a shakey, blurry, 5 minute DVD of my performance at festivals. I have even seen a man with a 15 year old Hi-8 camera filming at a festival and charging a hefty sum for the video. I want to charge a fair price so that everyone who wants a copy of their performance can get one, but at the same time I am showing up with a ton of expensive equipment and burning the DVDs on the spot... and I'm going to be stuck behind the camera for 10 hours each day.
Thanks for the feedback,
Michelle

Re: Paying for a video of a festival performance
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 12:29 PM1. Yes. It depends. Not that I've ever experienced.
2. The going rate for a professionally-shot DVD in the Boston area is around $30. I'd balk at much more than that.
3. No, and if I'm paying $30 I want some editing and titling on the DVD, so I wouldn't want it burned on the spot unless it was much less expensive.
4. I do, but with home made video you can run into so many problems with sound codecs, Mac vs. PC, etc that for $5, I would pay to have the video producer do it for me. I would prefer to receive a burned DVD of my YouTube-friendly footage so that I could upload it myself to my own account.
Happy to help!

Re: Paying for a video of a festival performance
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 11:36 PM1. Yes, i always buy my videos of my performances! no there is no discount on a second copy.
2. $30 is the going rate here..im sure you know that already though.
3. its nice to get my performance that day. im still waiting for one that i danced back in september! I have gotten mine also in the mail with a title and my name on it. im pretty sure there was also my photo on the cover! thats was nice too. No i do not want my performance edited. I want to see my entire performance and how i did. i dont see why a dvd should be more if you get it the same day. id would do one or the other if i were you! keep it simple.
4. i would not want my performance posted on youtube without having seen it.

Re: Paying for a video of a festival performance
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 8:36 PM1. yes i would buy a dvd of my performance. Sometimes there is a discount like half off if you buy something eles with it.
2. price range $29.99 - $45.00 depends what you offer..Like just the dvd shot on the spot for 29.99 but maybe 10 dollars extra you can have it custom made with a title and such.
3. I wouldnt expect it to be burned on the spot. That is just to much work with all the dancers you will film. I have it sent to them within a week or two..thats after to clean the film up and edit some. If someone wants it on the spot let them get a friend to film it right then.
4. I do know how to add videos from dvd to youtube. But im also a computer nerd lol..so many people may not know how to do that. SO yes you can charge them a fee to add it on youtube for them. Like if you had a package deal for 45 dollars, edit dvd and maybe get a case for the dvd and posted online. -

Re: Paying for a video of a festival performance
Tue, May 27, 2008 - 5:01 PM1. Yes, I like to have my performances on film. But I balk at high prices, precisely because, as you mentioned, the quality is usually NOT that great.
2. $30 is reasonable.
3. its nice to get my performance that day, but a couple of weeks after an event is reasonable. I don't want it edited.
4. I agree with Shayna, i would not want my performance posted on youtube without having seen it. But I'd love to have the option of having it done for extra $$$!! I'd *really* be into that!! -

Re: Paying for a video of a festival performance
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 12:49 AMYes I like to buy the videos. The price is around $30 I agree w/ Shayna keep it simple, because if you add details like cover etc.. it will be more expensive and people like it cheap and usually care about the performance in my opinion it is nice to have at the same day, but if it is a lot of work I would say it is fine later, i don't know how to cut for youtube if it is too long i would like extra for that...
I hope I helped take care!

Re: Paying for a video of a festival performance
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 12:44 PMI"ve paid $10 for a 5 minute DVD on the spot at a competition. It was put on you-tube no charge. I don't know how to do that.
At another contest, I paid $10 for a poor quality VHS. Yes, I said VHS - that I don't know how to convert to DVD let alone you-tube.
On the spot is nice for the dancer, and the camera person - who does'nt have to spend more time and money mailing them.
