Ever thought of sharing a little bit of this knowledge or creating a set of videos on turkish bellydance?I'm certain it would be a success, as there are very few turkish instructionals in the bellydance market. I can only think of artemis' Iamed dvds, Dahlena's american karshilima, and Sarah Skinner's am-cab/turkish dvd. The market seems to be dominated by egyptian/american-egyptian and tribal/fusion styles.

Hi Everyone

Lately festival organizers have been asking me if I am interested in being the official videographer for their events. I was hoping to get some feedback from you guys about how to proceed.

Questions for dancers:
1. Do you usually buy a video of your performance at these events? If you have a troupe, how many members buy a copy? Do you get a discount for buying extra copies (ie: $30 for the first one and $5 for each additional?)
2. What is a fair price for a professional video shot on a professional TV camera? How much is too much?
3. Do you expect your DVD to be burned on the spot and available that day? Do you expect to pay more if that is the case?
4. Do you know how to convert footage from a DVD into a format you can put on YouTube? Would you pay $5 extra to have your footage put on YouTube?

Questions for event organizers:
1. Do you pay a flat rate for a camera person for the day or are they a private vendor? Do you get a percentage of the profits?
2. Do you provide the blank DVDs, cases, labels, and DV tapes?

I think most dancers have paid up to $40 for a shakey, blurry, 5 minute DVD of my performance at festivals. I have even seen a man with a 15 year old Hi-8 camera filming at a festival and charging a hefty sum for the video. I want to charge a fair price so that everyone who wants a copy of their performance can get one, but at the same time I am showing up with a ton of expensive equipment and burning the DVDs on the spot... and I'm going to be stuck behind the camera for 10 hours each day.

Thanks for the feedback,
Michelle

First thing, I'm really lovin' your Drills and Secrets of the Stage DVDs. I think you are really filling a need for advanced/professional level dancers, which is a pretty rare thing indeed.

A DVD I'd love to see you produce would be about Choreography and Improvistion. Explaining the pros and cons of each, how to create choreography, tips and exercises to improve improvision, making improvised dance look choreographed, etc.

Another I'd like to see is one about bellydance career development. Career Options: dancer, instructor, workshop sponsor, vendor, etc with approaches to each. Advertising tips. Tips for getting gigs. Tips on advancing your career via competition and public performance etc

Another DVD I'd like to see would address competition preparation. Including a survey of dancers that regularly compete or have won in competitions and to hear from them about what they do to prepare for competition. The competition process and addressing reasons to compete or not to compete. This might be good coupled with a small documentary on BD competition.

I'm not sure if some of these would be too topic-specific for the general BD DVD buyer, but perhaps they would still make good workshop topics.

Keep up the great work CGP!!!

Title: Drills! Drills! Drills!
Instructor:	Michelle Joyce
Level: “All Levels” of dancers
Info: 115 minutes

You can practice your moves, your choreography, your improv and your performance skills, but what is the secret to flawless technique? How do you keep your locks and pops sharp and your eights and circles smooth and flowing throughout a long dance set? The “secret” isn’t such a surprise – it takes a lot of hard work and practice of course!

I’ve heard many students bemoan the lack of a good motivator at home to help them practice. They learn movements in class, but have trouble practicing on their own at home. Or, they’re tired of instructional videos that just teach movements and want to enhance and improve what they already know.

If you’re looking for that cosmic “kick in the rear” to jump start your dancing and help tune-up your technique, this is the video for you. Michelle presents a well-organized, logical progressive approach that will appeal to pros and novices alike. As with other videos, Michelle does not just promote the dance but infuses her material with a nod towards fitness, creating a work that will help to improve all aspects of a dancer’s form. Overall, this DVD is just fabulous. Michelle has put together a really well planned and executed offering for dancers of ALL abilities. This DVD is the “total package” of drills, providing sections to drill everything from core to isolations to layers and zils.

DVD sections include:
Strengthing Drills: Glutes, back, legs, thighs, lower abs and even the entire core are covered during this part of the DVD. Michelle begins with Suhalia-style glute squeezes and gives a detailed description of how, and how not, to execute the movement. A selection of drills for other parts of the body come next and trust me these exercises will definitely help you get into dancing shape! Here, too, are drills that will improve strength and control for specific movements including body rolls and undulations….

Isolation Drills: Now Michelle begins to focus on various dance movements. As with the strengthening drills she explains each movement clearly and concisely. Not only does Michelle demonstrate and breakdown the movements, but she also describes the muscles that drive each move. Frequently describing weight shifts and the anatomical changes involved with each movement, Michelle covers a total of 7 isolations before moving on to the actual isolation drill itself. This drill moves out of the standard “home” or basic position, incorporating a variety of foot patterns and arm positions while drilling the isolations broken down earlier. Movements are performed on both sides of the body and at a variety of speeds. In this way, the isolation drill has a bonus level of complexity as it also incorporates layering of body, arm, and feet position. Not only can you tighten up your isolations but you can also work on additional layers at the same time.

Finger Cymbal Drills: In the next section of the DVD, Michelle adds an additional layer to drilling by incorporating finger cymbals. First the three patterns that will be played are introduced along with explanations as to how each should be played. Michelle explains each in several different ways (according to dums and teks, counts, and hands) and there’s even a bar that appears across the screen that breaks down each pattern. There’s even a brief description about how to wear and play the cymbals, again making this valuable for both beginners and more experienced dancers. During the drill, Michelle plays each pattern and leads viewers through a series of arm movements.

Zig Zag Drill: This one was a new concept for me and one of the best on the entire DVD (and believe me, it was hard to pick a favorite!). Here Michelle describes a unique pattern that the body will take through the drill. This pattern is repeated through the hips (repeated on each side), pelvis, and chest. After first breaking down the drill and explaining how to do each aspect of it there is a section for dancers to follow along. Michelle then ups the anti by adding in zils along with the hip, pelvis, and chest patterns. This pattern is a wonderful way to increase range of motion in each area while working on locks and pops. I confess that here alone I spent several days just playing with the zig zag!

Feet and Hip Layering Drill: Another great section. Michelle breaks down the footwork (grapevine step) and then layers various movements onto the traveling step. Once again, she does a great job of explaining this section and also describes Suhalia’s method of denoting when the movement will occur in conjunction to the music. As someone who’s tried to briefly studied the Suhalia method (and admittedly got mired down in the nomenclature) it was very helpful to see the movement demonstrated as the step was counted. Next comes the follow along section where Michelle layers 7 movements onto the step. As with several of the other drill sections, there is a voiceover track while Michelle runs the follow-along drill. A nice touch here is all the good tips Michelle gives while demonstrating the drill. If you listen as you follow along and drill, you’ll pick up a number of nice points on technique and polish. Oh, and don’t worry if you’re a zil enthusiast – the ENTIRE drill of the layered traveling movements is repeated with added finger cymbals.

3/4 and Standing Shimmy Drills: Two different ways to perform the 3/4 shimmy are presented here: a hip-drop version and a hip up version. Michelle also demonstrates several different variations on the movement before going into the drills. Each of the two forms are drilled slowly first and then at a speedy rate. The drills aren’t simply done in place, however – Michelle moves you forward, backward, and even in circles. The next section really needs no breakdown or explanation at all, and is simply a follow along shimmy drill. Once again Michelle performs the drill, adding different arms with the shimmy and varying speeds, as a voiceover plays. Here too dancers will find a number of great tips as they practice with Michelle. As the drill progresses, the shimmies change and become increasingly harder in difficulty and speed.

Hip and Chest Layering Drill: Here Michelle combines hips with ribs. Breakdown first, and then a rather challenging drill. Each section of the body moves independently of the other and this will definitely provide a good challenge for most dancers. As the chest movement switches directions, the pacing of the different levels is varied, and other additional variations are presented this drill offers material for many challenging practice sessions. And, once you’re comfortable with the drill layers, you can always follow along to the zil section.

Choreography: The final part of the DVD is a choreography that combines all of the drills on the DVD. The inclusion of this on a drill DVD was brilliant – it provides dancers with a quick way to practice all of the various drills while also drilling their brain too! Not only can you drill your movements but you can actually practice learning material at the same time. Michelle’s so sneaky! The choreography is broken down into 4 manageable sections and is then presented in full for dancers to practice.

What Worked for Me:
• I loved the inclusion of strengthening exercises and the thought of using these as a drill. We so frequently drill “just the moves” and it was great to see the idea of strength drills included on a DVD. Some of these movements were intense (see below) but once you master them you will have a wonderfully strong body on which to base your dance.
• The progression of this DVD, from basic foundational material and drills to layers to zils and a full choreography, was well planned out. Each section was covered thoroughly and with a good attention to detail. Dancers of different levels will be able to adjust their practice plan accordingly rather than just having to tumble through a haphazard arrangement of drills as on some other DVDs.
• The application of various speeds and pacing for many of the drills was a nice touch. Frequently drills are demonstrated at only one speed and this variation was a nice way. I also loved the idea of switching the “leading” hip from side to side while working on each drill.
• The zig-zag drill was creative and offered me a new approach to drilling. For anyone who feels “stuck in a drilling rut” this new form alone would give you hours of challenging material.
• Michelle explains her drills according to the music, inspiring a musicality that many other drill systems lack. Frequently drills are simply demonstrated, but here Michelle talks about matching them to the downbeat and other aspects of the music helping dancers to drill not only the moves but musical interpretation too.

What Might Not Work for You:
• If you’re not a fan of the Suhaila style drills that are fairly intense exercises, you might not like the strength drill section of this DVD. Similarly, if you never play zils then the finger cymbal section might not be your cup of tea. The nice thing, however, is that there is still a ton of information that will benefit dancers of all levels.
• At times, it was a bit difficult to see Michelle’s feet. Personally this was not an issue for me once I understood which feet positions she was incorporating into her drills. But for some this might present a problem as the instructor’s feet positions are only shown in the mirror behind her. For some, only seeing the feet mirrored may be a bit difficult to follow.

One last note: I teach a regular, weekly drills class. I love drills, and try to think of all sorts of fun and unique ways to do various movements and dance concepts. I *really* enjoyed this DVD and was quite impressed with the approach to the isolation and zig zag drill sections in particular. If you’re looking for new material to drill, or even just new ways to execute your drills, I’d really recommend this DVD.

PS - This review is THIS LONG because there really is that much amazing material packed into this DVD!

Body by Bellydance is a fantastic follow up to Michelle's first workout dvd, Perfect Hips! This dvd not only provides a terrific workout for "problem areas", it also reinforces the basics of bellydance that she introduced us to on its worthy predecessor.

Body by Bellydance is not another one of those intimidating, "why did I even try this?" workout dvds that will end up gathering dust on a shelf or being donated to a thrift shop. It is a truly enjoyable, fun to do, belly dance based workout that will make you feel fit and, most of all, feminine. And, while this workout may be a little challenging in spots, even if you are completely out of shape you can always modify or skip certain moves until you are ready to tackle them.

Again, Michelle's friendly, warm personality comes through in this production making the dvd even more fun to use. When I work with Michelle's dvds (and I have them all!), I feel like I am getting a one on one lesson with a friend who is there to gently encourage me to do my best. I will be forever grateful that Michelle never resorts to those aggravating phrases that you so often hear on fitness/workout dvds. I swear I will scream if I hear "C'mon you can do it! Oh, wow, you're doing great" from an instructor who can't even see me to know whether or not I'm doing great or I’ve passed out on the floor...

Anyone who is more than bored with the standard fare of workout dvds on the market today will find Body by Bellydance a real breath of fresh air. Thanks once again Michelle for giving us another absolute, must have dvd for our bellydance (and fitness) collections!!!

I will be releasing Secrets of the Stage 2 and By Dancers For Dancers 3 in about 2 weeks, so let me again remind you how to get your "tribe discount":

1 - Add up the cost of the DVDs you would like (price list here http://cheekygirlsproductions.com/catalog.html ) then subtract $10 for your tribe discount. Add shipping: $3 for the first DVD and $1 for each additional.

2 - Paypal to michelle@cheekygirlsproductions.com with the subject line "tribe discount"

3 - I will send you a confirmation email, then I will post your DVD right away

4 - Please consider posting a review somewhere online once you have watched it. I am still a very small business, and if you believe in the product it would mean a lot to me if you would tell a friend. But don't worry, there isn't any obligation to do so.

** I have recently stopped shipping the tribe discount orders with priority mail, so they are cheaper to send. If you would like to upgrade to priority, then please email me for a new total.

Also, I will be doing quite a bit of traveling over the next few months so please check below on this thread about announcement regarding when potential delays in shipping out tribe discounts. I will be out of town starting tomorrow until May 4, so any orders made this week will not be shipped until May 5.
When my copy of "Drills! Drills! Drills!" arrived this weekend, I immediately popped it into my DVD player and sat positively transfixed until the last minute. All I can say is WOW - this is the drill DVD that I've been waiting for!!

I can't praise Michelle enough for the quality and quantity of information contained on this DVD, while keeping the price affordable. Which, in this out of control economy, I am sure is not an easy task.

The first thing that I realized about this DVD is that, to paraphrase the back cover of the box, it truly is "a lesson in how to practice". I have never seen a DVD that teaches this important aspect of learning how to belly dance. I've been taking lessons for close to four years and I honestly say that I had no idea how to structure my home practice sessions until I watched this DVD! I know that, from now on, I'll be able to get the most out of the precious minutes I have to spare to work on my "skills" (and, in my case, I use that term loosely.)

Now to the title subject - Drills! Let me tell you, these are NOT your mother's belly dance drills - these are serious drills. The kind of drills that will get you in shape and increase your belly dance skills at the same time. And what an array of drills there are! There are drills for strengthening the muscles, drills to get your shimmy in shape, drills that will truly isolate your isolations, drills that have more layers than a bakery full of cakes (mmmm..cakes...), and something that I have never seen included in "drill" DVDs - ZIL DRILLS!!! Yippee!!

I can see this DVD staying at the very top of my list for a LONG, LONG time as it will, not only, improve my dancing and overall fitness, it will help me (finally) learn how to focus.

Again, many, many thanks Michelle!!!

(I also posted this review on Shira's yahoo group and will soon sent it to Amazon)
I have been dancing and performing for a number of years and just loved this DVD. Many belly dance DVD's I watch a few times and then I am done with them. This is one I will go back to many times. I found useful hints on performing and improv for myself as well as great ways to present some of these ideas to my students.

Michelle covers various performing and improv exercises that you can practice with the DVD. I also like the fact that several dancers share their ideas giving you more than just one point of view.

This is a very practical and easy to understand DVD for belly dancers of all levels whether you are a beginner or already a performer. It is rare to find an instructional DVD that offers something for all levels.

Any ideas for a title?

I am worried about several small aspects of the production quality, but it is possible that these are things no one would notice. I am considering shooting part of it over yet again, but before I do I would like some objective eyes to have a look.

I am going to burn 4 copies from my computer to mail out to volunteers. I am looking for fairly immediate feedback, so I am hoping that only people who have time to watch a 2 hour DVD this week will respond. Anyway, the first 4 people to send me a message with their mailing addresses will get a DVD sent out right away.

It is sort of nerve wracking to release something that I don't feel is perfect, but maybe no one cares that the curtains behind me are wrinkled or that the settings on the camera made the picture look a bit yellowish i some scenes.

Someone once asked me “If you could only have one DVD in your collection, what would it be?”

I think I’m going to have to go with this one.

“Secrets of the Stage” is quite possibly the best works I’ve seen. From the amount of material presented, to the clear and concise descriptions, to the exercises and performances, to the price, this DVD is a must-have for any dancer interested in performing. It’s pretty rare for me to define anything as a “must have,” but I can definitely say that this video can benefit *any* belly dancer, regardless of style, who wants to step out onto the stage. The tips offered by the dancers throughout this video are inspiring and encouraging, making you want to put into practice what they’re advising.

The DVD is divided into three sections: Calmness and Simplicity, You and Your Music, and Focus and Energy Protection. Designed to help you perfect your performance skills, several of these main categories are further divided into additional parts that complement each main topic. After these “discussion topics,” comes a section of exercises that help dancers not only learn from what is covered on the DVD but instantly put it into practice. My favorite feature, as others have mentioned, is that each concept is demonstrated by a clip of a professional dancer in a live, staged setting narrated by the dancer herself. This was absolutely invaluable! How often are you able to get inside the mind of another performer while she or he is dancing? This is such a wonderful addition to this and will definitely help viewers to find new ways to approach their own personal attitude towards performances.

Calmness: Michelle first offers a brief explanation of the topic. Then she provides a valuable discussion of why this topic is important for performers. In the Calmness Section, Michelle gives detailed reasons as to why it would benefit you to be calm on stage. She offers numerous tips such as the fact that an audience can pick up on nervousness and that calmness will help you manage any crises that arise. These elaborations were great and went beyond the simple idea of “be cool and collected” that we all probably know. Michelle’s clear descriptions and honest candidness are refreshing and I found myself really paying attention to what she was saying. The material is presented in such a friendly, open way. I confess that I watched this several times to review it – a few times first to take a ton of notes as I got because I wasn’t able to write the review until I jotted down all the juicy bits first for myself!.

My favorite part of this section involved the inclusion of clips of herself and another dancer during live staged performances. Through each clip, the performer discusses what was happening (and, yes, these are actual clips of “could be disastrous” performances) and what her mindset was while dancing. During each of these sections, the narrators give so many great tips. They move beyond simply explaining what was happening and really give the watcher some excellent pearls of wisdom.

Fight or Flight: I’m notorious for having gripping stage fright before performing. I’ve never been sure where it comes from, but after watching this video I definitely know the basic mechanics of it! Michelle starts with a description of why the body is reacting the way it does when the nerves kick in. It’s great that she included this, because *knowing* why your body is behaving in this manner can really help when trying to correct it. Along with additional exercises elsewhere in the DVD, Michelle next offers some excellent exercises to relive tension before performing.

Simplicity: Here Michelle talks about the idea of “over dancing.” I was so glad to see this included, because this is something that seems to be creeping into our dances more and more with the luxury of so many wonderful ideas via the intent and so many great dance DVDs. If you’re a dancer that feels preoccupied with the idea of doing as much as you can at one time this section will help you to slow down and appreciate the idea of simplicity in dance. Over thinking your performances? This part will certainly help. The two dance performances included are beautiful and clearly illustrate this idea and once again the accompanying narration traces the dancers’ thoughts on the subjects. It is helpful to get their impressions, too, in addition to Michelle’s thoughts. Here the idea that “less is more” is beautifully illustrated.

You and Your Music: This is a section that, once again, offers a number of valuable tips for those perfecting their performances and pros alike. “Your job as a dancer is to interpret the music for the audience,” begins Michelle and from there she offers a different sort of approach to using the music. She explains the way she personally approaches musical interpretation and the different things that a dancer can listen for in each song. Everything from more basic ideas of the beat vs. the melody to more advanced concepts such as specifically selecting certain sections of the music to highlight is included here for the aspiring performer. Michelle also talks here about choreography versus improvisation, and offers tips on how to begin improvising for those who are not quite sure how to dance fluidly without a plan. Three clips are offered here – one performance where the dancer discusses how she improves and two wherein the dancers discuss how they choreography and get ready to utilize movements.

Focus and Energy Protection: Have you ever seen a dancer that has “it?” That sparkle onstage that compels you to watch, regardless of how complicated her movements or how pretty her costume? If you’re wondering how it is those dancers *do* that, this is the section for you. Here Michelle talks about different ways to project emotion and intent onstage. She talks about how to make a connection with not just the audience as a whole but each individual, describing ways to focus and captivate your audience. Here the two dances selected to illustrate the topic are quite different, giving two dramatically distinct examples of focus and emotion.

Exercises: Michelle includes resources to improve relaxing, improvisational skills, and one’s focus. The relaxation exercises move beyond what was briefly covered in the Calmness section. Drawing from sports psychology, Michelle has created a very useful 11 minute long exercise for those dancers with pre-performance jitters. The next study focuses on improvisation. First comes a “chair dance” where dancers are encouraged to sit down, focus on the upper body, and get creative! Michelle demonstrates how the exercise should go and then reminds dancers to do it on their own in order to get the most benefit from it. This was a wonderful way to see how another dancer would approach this challenge, while providing dancers with a wonderful improvisational exercise. The second improv exercise is truly designed to help dancers improve their ability to dance to music on the fly. Michelle encourages dancers to be uninhibited and enjoy whatever comes out in order to grow as a performer. During the exercise, the viewer has an opportunity to listen and then perform to the clip. For each of the clips the dancer can do this 4 times and must do something differently each time. Afterwards, there is an example of how the different featured dancers on the DVD interpret the same music. There are a total of 7 different clips that vary in style, giving a wide range of music to practice improvisation. The focus exercise is shot but sweet and once again perfectly illustrates the previously discussed concepts.

After watching this through once, I put it in again. And again. And again. This is definitely a DVD that will have you up and dancing and will inspire you to grow as a performer. Highly recommended!

What Worked for Me:
• Many of Michelle’s points are concepts that are not often taught in dance classes; ideas that one often only learns through years of performance practice. These are absolutely invaluable and it is wonderful to have them all conveniently collected in one place.
• Michelle is a great instructor. Once again, it is clear that she really knows what she is talking about and can put it into practice.
• The inclusion of performances to illustrate each section definitely helped me to visualize the concepts Michelle explains. The fact that she included different dancers in addition to herself was also great – different styles are covered from several talented performers.
• The price for the DVD in terms of what you are getting is absolutely affordable. Michelle delivers a wonderful piece for an incredibly reasonable price.

What Might Not Work for You:
• Honestly, there isn’t much at all. This is one of the few DVDs I’ve seen that is a “MUST” have for anyone considering performing. The only reason this might not work for you is if you didn’t want to perform!

Ooooh girls, you’re going to love this one!

So you’re an intermediate or advanced level dancer who doesn’t have a lot of performance experience. You’ve got “the moves” -- but you’re thinking, “now what?”

Michelle Joyce’s new dvd series “Secrets of the Stage” is made for you, the dancer who is having trouble putting all you’ve learned together into one nice performance package. There’s something here for everyone: if you’re a choreographed dancer, there’s a section of improvisation drills. If you’re a technically proficient dancer but aren’t sure about your choreographic skills, there is ample discussion on making your dance interesting. If your on-stage energy isn’t what it should be, you’ll find expert advice from dancers who once suffered from the same problems. Practically paralyzed by stage fright? That’s covered here too, along with many other common performance problems.

I think I can say with confidence that this dvd is the first to actually offer individual analysis of entire dances – by the dancers themselves! Watching this dvd is like being backstage or in the green room of a major dance event. You’ll hear advice, suggestions, tips, tricks, and horror stories from professional dancers, all the while seeing performance concepts illustrated right there on the screen.

This dvd, volume 1 in the set, is arranged in three major sections for analysis: Calmness and Simplicity, You and Your Music, and Focus and Energy Projection. In between and after these sections are Practice Exercises to help get you started incorporating these concepts into your own dancing.

“Calmness” begins with an unusual approach – by showing you dance performances that didn’t go quite as planned. The dancers highlighted in this section discuss salvaging their performances from wardrobe and prop malfunctions, and give advice on how to keep calm and still enjoy yourself when things don’t go the way they did in practice.

After this section is a chapter on “Fight or Flight” which includes exercises and ideas to help you relax backstage and to help manage nervousness. The breathing techniques and short exercises demonstrated here are what the pros use to prevent backstage “freakout” before competitions and shows.

“Simplicity” is the next chapter and the discussion and performance analysis here centers around avoiding “overdancing” and that common phenomenon of throwing everything you know into the first 30 seconds of the song. There is so much good advice in this chapter I had to watch it several times to absorb it all.

“You and Your Music” is a chapter discussing choreography and improvisation. Many of us suffer from not fully embracing our music, and not really making it OURS. The helpful hints and advice here will allow you to look at your music in a new way, and pull more from your music than just the melody and the beat.
“Focus and Energy Projection” tackles subjects such as how to avoid the plastered-on smile, making a connection with your audience, and taking your audience on a musical journey with you. This section is followed by a series of calming exercises that involve breathing, visualization, and progressive relaxation. These exercises would be very nice to do before a performance, to center and ground yourself, or even after a stressful day at the office.

After you’ve relaxed, you can move to the next section of exercises. First is a chair dance exercise to help you learn and practice emotional expression in the upper body. We tend to get locked in to thinking this dance is all about the hips, and the upper body is often neglected, so this exercise brings your attention back up the upper body and torso.

Next is a long section of 7 different improvisation exercises. These exercises are harder than they look! You’re given a short clip of music, which is repeated 4 times, and you’re told to find 4 different ways to dance to it. After the exercise you can see what the professional dancers did to that same music. This exercise really makes you think!

The last exercise is the really brilliant “Focus” exercise, which helps you to evaluate and practice where your attention is focused when you dance. This exercise helps to make the dance more of internal process, and aids in helping you truly connect with your audience on an emotional level.

Camerawork, lighting, and sound are excellent and are comparable to Michelle’s other dvds/ Distractions are eliminated by having the screen go black for the improv and relaxation exercises. When Michelle is narrating, her voice is calming yet still full of energy, and soft piano music accompanies the relaxation exercises.

This dvd runs about 80 minutes, but you can’t just expect to watch it once and completely absorb the material in 80 minutes. There is a lot of information and inspiration packed in those minutes and it will take more than a few viewings to unlock all of what’s here.

(I have to admit, I hadn’t seen the performance by a dancer named Shoshonna, and she does this magnificent veil piece that just blew me away. I had to rewind her section twice because I kept getting distracted by her dancing and wasn’t hearing her discussion and analysis!)

My impression of the dvd is that it seems like a conversation between friends, discussing various facets of belly dance, but the discussion is very intellectual and thoughtful. I love the fact that the dancers comment on their own performances. I love the fact that so many dancers are involved (I forgot to count – I think it’s at least 6 or 7). The analysis and commentary are presented very professionally and eloquently, and completely without giggly inside jokes or a lot of “uhs” and hemming and hawing.

I think one of the unrealized benefits of having this dvd in your collection will be how motivating it is, and how inspiring it is. Have you had a bad practice? Play the dvd and learn to grow from it. Not feeling in the mood to practice? Pop in the dvd. I guarantee you’ll be dancing along with it before too long. Feeling like you’re ready just to give up and quit altogether, burning your bedlah and crying into your ouzo? Why not instead give the dvd a watch. It’s the best dance pick-me-up I’ve seen in ages – for a seasoned pro OR the dancer preparing for her first hafla.

I think the dvd hits the stands on the 15th, and you know you’ll want to be the first on the block to get it. Don’t wait around for it to show up second-hand on ebay, because I seriously doubt anyone will want to part with it once they’ve seen it. Priced extremely reasonably for the content it contains, this dvd is a winner all around! (Personally I can't wait for volume 2!)

(By the way, I don’t work with Michelle; don’t know her outside the internet community; don’t own stock in Cheeky Girls Productions or any of that. She sent me an advance copy to review for Amazon, and I thought I’d go ahead and post the review here.)

1. How many belly dance DVDs do you own? How many of those are instructitonal vs performance?
5. Do you feel annoyed when you receive a mass email that announces new DVDs being released?
6. How important is it for an instructional DVD to feature a famous dancer? Would you take a chance on someone you've never heard of?

I'm not really thinking that people are making hundreds of copies or anything, but I am just curious how common it is for people to rip a DVD for a friend (or two). Are people more likely to copy expensive DVDs for friends? I know it is so common to burn a CD for a friend without thinking of it.. have DVDs reached that point?

Also, how many people know how to get around the anti-piracy locks? If you have the right software it is possible to burn any DVD. How much trouble are people willing to go through to do it? It costs a little extra to lock the DVD so I am trying to figure out if it is even worth it.

Lastly, does a scary warning at the beginning make any difference? How about a cute and funny plea not to do it (ie: a photo of my dog drooling and text that says you are taking food out of his mouth if you pirate)? Or how about something that appeals to your sense of guilt (ie: I slave away to make these DVDs affordable...)? Or are these warnings totally useless?

I recently received my DVD's "Secrets of the Stage Vol 1", "Pop, Lock & Shimmy" and "Belly Dance Basics". These are by far some of the best instructional videos I have found in a long time! I can't wait for Michelle/Cheeky Girls Productions to produce more instructional videos (please, please, please).

The quality of the production is fantastic. Great lighting & sound. It is always easy to see & follow Michelle in the videos.
The DVDs are very affordable. Far more reasonable than $50 to $60 per DVD! With Michelle's videos you get tremendous value for your dollar. They are priceless in terms of the content.

I, like so many others, really enjoyed the true drilling nature of the Pop, Lock & Shimmy video. This is one video which I will return to again & again. I've been using it regularly in my practice sessions and absolutely love it. The drills are fun, challenging & lend themselves to a terrific choreography at the end of the DVD.

The Secrets of the Stage Vol. 1 is a true gem. The video arrived the day before I had two major dance recitals to perform in. I incorperated some of the techniques from the video into my stage show. The exercises on relaxation, focus & dealing with pre-performance jitters/anxiety were extremely beneficial for me. The format of the video was unique in having the dancers narrate during their own performances. This is a terrific learning tool. I had to admit--I was so caught up in watching the performances though that I had to view the clips several times so I could focus on both the dancing & narration! ;) But that speaks volumes for the quality of the dancers and their skills. The various exercises on the video are wonderful & very helpful for personal development as a dancer and performer.

Would love to see instructional videos in the future from Adriana, Sandra & Nanna just to name a few!

Keep up the fabulous work!

Hi Everyone...

I am in the editing phase of my newest instructional DVD called Secrets of the Stage. From what I can tell, it is totally different than any other DVD on the market... which is both scary and exciting! I'll post links to some sample clips on YouTube once I get them uploaded (should be in a day or so) but in the meantime, here is the blurb from the back cover. And if you have suggestions for future installments, as always, I'm all ears!

**SECRETS OF THE STAGE**

ABOUT THE SERIES

"...information that every performer and instructor should have."

What makes a captivating dancer? A captivating dancer knows how to draw in the audience and takes them on an emotional journey with every movement and expression. A captivating dancer shows us a different way of listening to the music without overpowering it and teaches us that there is beauty in even the simplest movements. A captivating dancer knows how to build drama and set up those "wow" moments.

Unfortunately, most dancers simply focus on the mechanics of their movements and don't train themselves in the art of performing. Many dancers mistakenly think that performance skills cannot be learned and feel frustrated that it does not come naturally.

Having sharp isolations and cute combinations are a result of training your muscles, but incorporating stage presence, emotion and musical awareness into your dance require training of a totally different kind. The exercises in this DVD are uniquely designed to help you become a better performer and to push your dance presentation to the next level.

The format is different than any other belly dance instructional DVD. Each concept is demonstrated by video clips of professional dance performances, while the dancers themselves narrate. This unique concept gives you a glimpse into what is going on in the dancers' mind in real time as she performs. Several drills and exercises that combine dance, drama, and emotional exploration are included at the end of DVD.

ABOUT THE TEACHER

Michelle Joyce is a professional belly dancer who has performed for audiences around the globe. She has won several awards including 2004 People's Choice Belly Dancer and 2006 East Coast Classic Belly Dance Competition Champion.

Michelle also has a Master's in Counseling, and draws on that knowledge to incorporate techniques such as progressive relaxation, visualization, meditation, and stress response reduction. Additionally, Michelle is a certified personal trainer.

ABOUT THIS DVD

topics covered:
- relaxation and calmness
- you and your music (includes an improvisation exercise)
- focus and energy projection

(originally reviewed for Yahoo group bellydancevideos)

Hello all. Here are my thoughts after watching this dvd:

Most people will call this a drum solo dvd, and that's what it is, but it's also MUCH more. Many of us have complained about a lack of "Drill" videos on the market, and how we wish there were videos that would drill specific technique. If you're looking to drill and sharpen your pops, locks, and shimmies, THIS is that video.

Think SHARP!! This is a not a drill video for slow moves, or for any kind of specific technique. It's exactly what it says it is -- pops, locks, and shimmies. Sharp moves and how to make them sharper, and shimmies, plus sharp layer drills.

Yes, it teaches a drum solo choreography, a cute choreography! And you could perform the choreography if you wanted to. It's taught in combinations, which make nice drills themselves. Like I said, you COULD perform this choreography, but I think, after working with the dvd for a while, you'll be inspired to make your OWN choreography out of the drills and combos and things covered here.

It's sort of rare that a "choreography" dvd actually inspires you to abandon the choreography taught, for your own vision -- but that's what I felt like after watching this. I ran downstairs and grabbed Hossam Ramzy's Tabla Solo cds and started playing immediately. I can see I'm going to have LOTS of fun with this dvd. :)

This dvd is marketed to intermediate/advanced dancers. I put the dvd in the player and started it, went of to get a glass of water, and when I came back, it had already started, and she was doing a hip lift drill. I watched it for a bit thinking, "this is advanced? Hmmm...." but then the chapter changed and I see that this was the WARMUP! LOL. It gets progressively more advanced from the warmup. :)

I think what's going to get the most "airtime" for many dancers is the drill section. You can pick and choose from different drill sets, or do them all together, OR jump to a chapter where all the combinations are presented as drills, or jump to just the layer drills, or just the shimmy drills -- LOTS of options here.

And these drills aren't just "4 counts of this, 4 counts of that" for 30 seconds. These drills are DRILLS. Like Bootcamp drills. They go on for EVER! Okay, not forever, but long enough to actually be USEFUL as drills, and when you've done them, you KNOW you've done something! I believe the goal of the drills is to help you achieve SHARPER body movements. I know from working Suhaila's material that if you practice a lock long enough it gets smaller and tighter and more precise, and this dvd will certainly help with that.

Her layer drills aren't just layered shimmies either. They're similar to Suhaila's level 2 layer drills, where you're layering hip singles with side-to-side movements, or upper body movements. Tough stuff, and you really can't practice it enough.

I wasn't going to buy this dvd because I thought I wasn't interested in learning another drum solo choreography, but I'm glad I did because this dvd is WAY more than just another drum solo choreography. I would say this dvd could easily become a useful part of your daily practice. You can practice the combinations for the drum solo, even if you don't plan on performing the piece itself. They make nice sharpening drills in themselves.

Production quality is excellent, well-lit, good sound, and she teaches with a back mirror so you can see what she's doing from several angles. Additional performances and a short interview with Michelle about the great 2004 New Year's Riot in India round out the extras. IThe whole dvd is about 90 minutes, and most of that is instruction/drill time.

Overall opinion -- Definitely worth the money, and this dvd will be going in the "watch and work with on a regular basis" shelf. I would recommend it to all intermediate/advanced students looking to sharpen their technique, or as a nice series of drills to complement the yoga-based drills in many Tribal Fusion dvds.

Can't WAIT to get "Secrets of the Stage!"

:) Amanda
