Haight Ashbury Museum in GGP Emergency Aid Station

According to the Hotel and Visitors Bureau the Haight is the second most popular pedestrian tourist destination in SF (Pier 39 is first) and yet, with exception of 3-days-a-week walking tours or my own historical star map, there is precious little that presents its history to this eager public.

Over the years there have been many suggestions for potential Haight Ashbury Museum locations (the Library Park Branch, various stores, 710 Ashbury) but the value of real estate or the commitment to other needs have precluded its establishment. However, there exists a local building (Stanyan betw. Beulah & Frederick) which is already a City Landmark, is unoccupied (and slowly deteriorating), and has no specified place in the GGP Master Plan:

Emergency Aid Station
• accessibility and general
upgrade needed
• new facility for
recreational activities
• landmark structure

It would take some extensive upgrading of the unreinforced masonry to contemporary earthquake standards but perhaps an assessment could be made by the City Engineer's Office.

Park Emergency Aid Station. This structure
served as a San Francisco Department of Public
Health emergency hospital from 1902 until 1978.
It continued as an ambulance station until 1991.
The building will require extensive work for
accessibility and seismic improvements to make it
suitable for a new use. If the improvements can be
made, the structure may provide a new location for
recreational activities. Another possible use would
be as offices for a park conservancy organization.

Once known as a hub for major film and TV productions outside of Hollywood, film production work has dwindled in recent years throughout Northern California as other cities and countries offer increasing incentives to major studios. Join BAWIFT members and other women media makers to learn what our local film commissions are doing to revitalize the industry and put Bay Area filmmakers back to work.
"THE GREATER CIRCULATION" (2005; 93 min.) a feature film by Antero Alli incorporating Rainer Maria Rilke's
"Requiem For a Friend" (as translated by Stephen Mitchell).
Film clip URL: http://www.fractalvideo.com/HTML/TGCFV.html
Excerpt from the filmthreat.com review
**********************************
"Rainer Maria Rilke's "Requiem for a Friend" (via the lyrical Stephen Mitchell translation) is the heart, soul and mind of "The Greater Circulation," by Berkeley filmmaker Antero Alli. The film has a deceptively simple concept: an experimental theater company in Berkeley, California, stages a performance ritual based on the poem, and during the course of rehearsals and production the impact of the poem comes to challenge and haunt the various people involved in this endeavor. But beyond that concept is a deep, provocative and often disturbing drama which poses questions of love, art, mortality and grief with the grace and majesty of Rilke's work..simply astonishing..."
Returning for a third year after two consecutive sold-out concerts, globalFEST ˜ New York's world music extravaganza ˜ announces the line-up for what has expanded to a two-night event. The festival takes place Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22, 2006 at The Public Theater, with the same 13 acts performing each night.
As in years past, globalFEST 2006 challenges audiences to re-think the parameters of world music. As the Village Voice's Carol Cooper described the first year, "Few, if any, of these acts were obsessed with the 'purity' of their music. Authenticity and purity are not the same, and if festival participants chose to bend and blend genre categories, it was only after serious study of those root musics they hoped to update or alter. If anything, the participants in Manhattan's first globalFEST proved it's possible to respect the past without being forced to preserve it forever unchanged." Isaac Guzman wrote in The Daily News, "Aside from the high quality of the artists, what's striking about globalFEST is that it does away with typical notions of what constitutes world music."
Since its 2004 launch, globalFEST has served as a beacon for international musicians hoping to boost their presence in North America. The festival seeks to showcase artists for fans and impresarios alike. Scheduled to coincide with the annual Arts Presenters conference˜a performing arts event where most North American performing arts centers and festivals book their coming seasons˜globalFEST identifies artists on the cusp of success here and gives them a springboard for further accomplishment on the touring circuit.

FAMILY DOG AND TRIBAL STOMP HISTORY

Chet and I have been tight since 1963. Connie Chestnut my girl friend from Mill valley took me over to San Francisco to meet, Chet, Elsa Kali, her daughter Yoni and Oscar.
Soon after Chet introduced me to Michael Ferguson.

I wanted to help Chet get off speed so I took him to Silver city, Nevada to take Peyote with the Native American Church at the ZEN MINE. http://www.woodstocknation.org/peyote.htm
Their he met Don Works , Rick Mallory, and Travis T. Hipp .

Travis owned a coffee House in Berkeley called the CABAL. Many great folk singers performed there and would stop at the Zen Mine for rest and relaxation.
Michael Ferguson sooned joined in and with money from Mark, the Red Dog Saloon was open for Entertainment by THE CHARLETONS, were truly the first psychedelic. Electric Band with Michael Ferguson on rag time piano..

I was linked to the Family Dog through Michael Ferguson, Chan Laughlin, “TRAVIS T.HIPP”, Luria Castille , Ellen Harmon and Chet.

During the summer of 1965 Luria and Ellen spent almost every weekend in Big Sur where I was the bouncer. at Redwood Lodge and Tony Phillips was bartender for LSD investigator JOE K. ADAMS. That was the last LSD summer of no bummers or freak outs.

The disc Jocky Tom Donahue opened a psychedelic night club on Broadway in North beach , called MOTHERS and used Big Sur and Sausalito artists to create the trippy interior and light show.
That was Don Lewis, Neal Rose, Rodney Richmond, Chris Roberts and a few others.

Soon after the Longshoreman’s hall was leased by the Family Dog. Out of all that came the Family Dog Productions with Kelly doing the Graphics.

In 1979 I was living on a dredge in Sausalito with Charles Michael Haas II aka Michael Woodstock - the Dredge
1948 - 1986 Murdered in Mexico

Michael , Rapid Robert and I were taking a lot of LSD and felt we were the HOO KOO EE KOO Indians or Seagull people.. We wanted to do a gathering of the tribes in the spirit of the Local Natives. I told Michael I knew Chet Helms well and would introduce him. Michael came up with $150,000 and we went to see Chet. Chet got together with Bell Star and went to work.

The Tribal Stomp in 1979 at the Monterey Fairgrounds happened and the band we all wanted to see was Burning Spear- it was also the first Us appearance of The Clash -.
There is a picture of me with the Clash in the Rolling Stone taken at that show.

The police sealed off the fairgrounds and wouldnt let anyone enter of leave. as a result it was a sweet but expensive privite party. One reason was they heard we were going to give away FREE POT. Some Humbolt county growers had brought down gunny sacks full just to give away. For two days agents searched the fairgrounds looking for who had the pot. On the last day Wavy Gravy was doing a monologue on stage and the growers came running into the arena and dumped the pot on the STAGE in front of WEAVY.
Nobody got busted and everybody got high.
My son Dunn was conceived at that party.
I miss Chet a lot.
Peace Love and Music

Yuppees Put Haight Ashbury Street Fair On Hold

Twenty Eight year community street fair and music festival put on hold by neighboring home owners group.

Pablo Heisny, founder and director of the very popular Haight Ashbury Street Fair's for almost thirty years is battling a Cole Valley Home Owners group to save his neighborhood's faire. It seems that newer home owners in Cole Valley, about 6 blocks up the road, are miffed about the excess and type of foot traffic one day year. Ironically Pablo Heisny trained the administrators and managers of the Cole Valley street fair.

It would seem logical for the Cole Valley street faire and Haight Ashbury Street Faire to join forces and have both festivals on the same day to spread out the traffic. But Pablo says that the Cole Valley street fair folk are turning up their noses at the thought.

This to me seems rather un community spirited and is a very real form of cultural genocide. One community is actively attempting to deprive the freedom of speech of another community. Yes some folks do piss in doorways, but that happens all year round in both neighborhoods, not just one day a year. And by the way, have you every been to India?

Is there a connection between real estate ownership and the disconnection from one's community and neighbors?

Deborah Paulino
(Haight Ashbury renter)
http://www.gigdirectory.net
A special section has been set aside on http://www.Gigdirectory.net for comments about this article and issue.

Info about how to help save the Haight Ashbury Street Faire follows...

STREET FAIR PERMIT ON HOLD
JOIN PRO-FAIR E-MAIL CAMPAIGN
SFPD Captain John Ehrlich from Park Station has requested that the 2006 Haight Street Fair permit application be put on hold because of his sense of community concerns after holding private meetings that excluded any input from the Haight Street Fair.

We also feel that this move is related to our efforts for calling attention to a proposed doubling of Police Service Fees that did not include significant public opinion and how it would adversely affect street fairs across the City. In July, 2005, the Finance Committee tabled the fee increases and directed the SFPD to hold city-wide meetings with the street fairs to discuss the pertinent issues. This has never happened despite our repeated requests for such meetings.

We are asking you to voice your support for the Haight Street Fair and its 2006 permit application and to request that any fee increases for San Francisco street fairs should have a public forum.

Please see the Haight Ashbury Street Fair's web site for more details and history of the festival.

I'm a little curious how it looked in hindsight from different perspectives.

I wasnt onsite to check the potties after the event, so I guess im really wondering if the potty vendor had any noticeable problems cleaning up the pottybanks afterward, and did the signs help reduce trash at all.

Also curious as to overall opinion on crowd behavior; seemed to me like most everyone was being well behaved, and hopefully not trashing the joint too much. Were the trashcans effective, and how many of them got overfilled?

epilogue - i got robbed upon arriving in LA and was cleaned of my wallet containing everything, also my cool pile of posters. least i still got a few of the cut-corner ones.

Chet Helms to be memorialized at concert

Jeff Burkhart
Marin Independant Journal

Joli Valenti describes the late Chet Helms as "like an uncle to me. He didn't teach me to be a gentleman, he taught me how to be a gentle man."

Helms, a pioneering rock impresario, died of a stroke in June at 62. Sunday, Valenti - son of legendary Quicksilver Messenger Service frontman Dino Valenti - and his band Quicksilver Gold will join 20 other rock bands and rock personalities in a free memorial concert/event in Helms' honor at Speedway Meadows in Golden Gate Park.
Joli Valenti's tribute to Quicksilver also features former Huey Lewis bassist Mario Cipollina (brother of the late John Cipollina, Quicksilver's original guitarist) and former Steve Miller guitarist Greg Douglas.

"We are going to do Quicksilver [songs] and we're also going to do my dad's song 'Get Together' (which was a hit for the Youngbloods)," Valenti says.

The Summer of Love-type show is billed as "A Chet Helms Tribal Stomp" and reads like a who's who of the 1960s hippie movement. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the show will feature acts such as Country Joe McDonald, Wavy Gravy, the Charlatans, Canned Heat and a reunited Blue Cheer.

Helms is considered one of the founding fathers of the psychedelic movement. From 1962 to 1970 as a promoter for his "Family Dog Productions," Helms developed the concept of the modern rock festival, booking large shows at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, Family Dog at the Beach (at Ocean Beach) and shows in Golden Gate Park.

Those performances featured psychedelic posters, light shows and music played at sensory overload volume. Much of this was reputed to be inspired by the drug LSD, earning the music the nickname acid or psychedelic rock.

Mill Valley publisher Tom Burke remembers hanging Family Dog posters as a teenager.

"Those first couple of years were really a different thing," he says. "Nobody knew what they were doing ... they just knew they were doing something very cool."
In the late 1990s, Burke's company, Pomegranate, would publish many of the same legendary psychedelic posters that he hung as a kid.

"Chet created an environment where creativity was cool," says Boots Hughston of the original and current Family Dog.

Burke believes that one-time "Dog" partner Bill Graham had a hand in the Family Dog's original decline. "Graham was more of a business man," Burke says. "He had a killer instinct. É When he turned [concert booking] into a competitive environment, the Dog just couldn't really handle it."

After taking almost a decade off, Helms returned to booking shows in 1976. In 1980, he opened Atelier Dore, an art gallery in San Francisco, and focused more on his own photography.

Helms is famous for bringing Janis Joplin together with Big Brother and the Holding Company and aiding in the formations and popularity of bands such as the Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane. He was considered integral in the shaping of the "San Francisco sound."

His shows spawned the 1967 Summer of Love, an event that established the careers of San Francisco-based bands that went on to national stardom.
A tireless promoter and peace activist, Helms booked many bands from beyond the San Francisco scene, mixing local talent with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, Peter Tosh and the Clash.

"We are all here only for a hot minute," says producer/artist Narada Michael Walden, who will be closing Sunday's show. "Chet's love is still with us very strong; the thing he told me is one love, one breath, one life. The body goes on but the spirit is still here."

"God sent an angel here by accident," Valenti adds.

Proceeds from the show via the sales from T-shirts, CDs or DVDs will benefit the Helms family.

What: "A Chet Helms Tribal Stomp"

Who: Quicksilver Gold, Paul Kantner and the Planet Earth Rock & Roll Orchestra, Eric Burdon, Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks, Country Joe McDonald, Wavy Gravy, the Charlatans, Canned Heat, Blue Cheer, Jorge Santana, Greg Errico, Roy Rogers, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and other rock personalities.
Where: Speedway Meadows in Golden Gate Park
When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday

Letter from Doug Gree to SF Chronicle

"Oct. 20, 2005

Dear S.F. Chronicle,

What is going on ! There is less coverage about the Celebration of Chet Helms’ life this Oct. 30th in Golden Gate Park in the Chronicle than in a London paper someone sent me. Joel Selvin has said nothing. Has he forgotten where he came from? I remember him as a kid trying to gain access to the SF music scene. Is it Clear Channel or nothing now? Is he too slick now for “that old hippie scene”?

Take a look around you Joel. You of all folks should know what the origins of SF’s music and art scene is. You should know what a major role Chet played. Sure, Graham made the money, but Chet created the spirit, had the vision. Burning Man is the Dionysian theatre that Chet created with open dance floors and light shows taken into the new millennium. Do you remember what a concert poster looked like in 1963, pre Family Dog?.... a boxing flyer. Who first put together art and music? Maritime Hall and Reggae on the River are direct descendants of the Family Dog as well.

Maybe we should thank you, because being ignored or oppressed is always a more rich and fertile ground for creativity. More art comes from frustration than from acceptance and complacency. There are always those who will capitalize on a scene, but don’t really want to be seen with the creators of that scene. Chet wasn’t rich or slick. He lacked that New York aggression. He was mild and, if you knew him, a true intellectual.

And of course and as usual, we have the best damn parties of anybody. Sorry you’ve missed the point and the opportunity. But we’re inclusive, so you’re all invited and it’s free. It was never about the money for some of us. Is that so hard to understand in this day and age? Are you beginning to get the picture?

Doug Green"

###

We love you Doug

Also looking for a few additional volunteers to assist the security team for the event as well as overnight guards for saturday and sunday nights.

Background:
Chet Helms was one of the founding fathers of the psychedelic movement
from the 1960’s. As promoter for the “Family Dog”, Chet developed the
concept of the modern rock concert and was one of the founding fathers
of the 1960’s peace movements that swept the nation and made waves
around the world. Chet was also the catalyst that brought together
Janis Joplin with “Big Brother and the Holding Company”, which helped
shape the San Francisco sound. He promoted acts like The Grateful Dead,
Jefferson Airplane, Charlatans, Great Society, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors,
Peter Tosh, the Clash and countless others. Without Chet Helms, as many
have said, there would be no Grateful Dead, no Jefferson Airplane, no
Big Brother, and the list goes on and on. While promoting concerts at
the legendary Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, Chet produced a series
of posters that are considered by some to be the finest art from that
period. It was through these posters that artists like Alton Kelley,
Stanley Mouse, and Rick Griffin, rose to fame. He also provided a
fertile home for light shows to develop their art, which became today’s
multimedia light show extravaganzas. Chet Helms continued promoting
pivotal concerts through four decades. In the 60’s at the Avalon,
Family Dog at the Beach, S.F. Golden Gate Park, Denver Dog, and Crystal
Ballroom in Portland. In the 1970’s, Chet organized the “Tribal Stomps”
in Berkeley and Monterey, which rekindled hip values and united the
families. The “Tribute to Chet Helms” in 1994, brought together many of
the original 60’s acts and started a new hip movement that lasted at
Maritime Hall for 7 years. In 1997, Chet organized the 30th anniversary
“Summer of Love” concert at the Beach Chalet Meadows, uniting young
bands with original 1960’s San Francisco acts. Over 20,000 people
attended this event. Where Bill Graham may have been the warrior and
conqueror of rock, Chet Helms was heart and soul. Chet was a kind and
gentle spirit who had love for all.
