Classes?

So I just bought my first hoop, and have been playing with it on my own, but I feel like I really want to take classes. However, I’m finding that in a city with a flourishing hoop scene there seems to be a dearth of teachers. So far the only classes I’ve found are:

Aloft: www.aloftloft.com/Aloft_Loft/About_.html
Monday night classes. Hour and a half. But $100 + a $30 membership fee for four classes seems a little steep. And if you miss a class, too bad, you’ve already paid for it…I don’t know… Plus they have no information posted about the instructor, which is what I’m really curious about.

HooperPower: www.hooperpower.com/index.html
Sunday classes. Also and hour and a half. $35 a class, which seems reasonable, but still a little outside of my ramen-noodle-college-kid budget. But the teacher looks really cool, and is a “certified hoop girl instructor” for whatever that’s worth.

I’m wondering if anyone here has any opinions about either place, or could recommend classes somewhere else. Again, I’m a college kid, so money’s tight. Does anyone here teach? That would be ideal, really. Or is this something that I could conceivably teach myself?

    Hi Laura,
My company just scheduled some new classes check out the new post.
I have to say, booking and executing hoop classes in Chicago is very difficult. I've been doing this since 2006 and finding space to rent can cost us up to $100 an hour, plus flyers, promotions, hoops, ect.
Sometimes we don't even break even and it ends up being a huge expense for us just to even be there.
There is also the chance that walls and floors get scuffs and scratches that we usually have to stay and scrub for ...sometimes places are weary of renting space due to the wear and tear that hooping can cause.
So although it may seem steep what people are charging...it's very steep just to book classes and make them happen.
In 2006 no one was even teaching....youtube was my teacher at first as well :-D
I hope you can make it out to one of our classes in February.
This is a new space and they were ok with $10 per class...this is the only time we've ever been able to charge this little.
    Take care
    Peace!
