Conclave seeks writing that centers around well-crafted characters—complex and authentic: like Leopold Bloom, Huckleberry Finn, Anna Karenina, Hamlet, Miss Havisham, Hannibal Lecter, Hester Prynne, and others. Whether you love them or hate them, these characters are unforgettable and infuse their stories with life beyond the page. Those are the kinds of enduring characters we'd like to have populate the artfully crafted stories in Conclave.

That's why you are invited to join thousands of your Chicago friends, neighbors and businesses and millions of people around the world to make a bold statement about climate change on March 29 from 8 to 9 p.m local time.

Turn out your lights for one hour. Earth Hour.

As World Wildlife Fund's flagship city for the United States, Chicago, a leader in environmental initiatives, is encouraging its residents across the region to make the pledge to help fight global warming by voluntarily turning off their lights for 60 minutes. Signature skyscrapers, key landmarks, theater marquees and shops on the Magnificent Mile will voluntarily turn off their lights.
ComEd, the northern Illinois power utility, is a major sponsor of Earth Hour.

Earth Hour's not just about cutting back for one hour. It's about taking a stand and thinking ahead about what you, your neighbors and your city can do to slow climate change.

Seize the Earth Hour moment and change some of your outdated energy-wasting light bulbs to new, efficient and inexpensive compact fluorescents. Think of other ways you can cut your energy usage and trim your electric bill after Earth Hour has passed.

Greetings from Austin. I'll keep this brief: I want one of you, or a few of you, to create a tribe for Chicago night shift workers and work to promote it. It is a great community service project. I worked the night shift for 6 months in Seattle, and I have talked to a few other people here in Austin who have worked the shift and I promise you that most know of the shift as being quite miserable. Books, movies, and video games, and the like, are not sufficient for people working the shift. People are social but the night shift generally does not allow people to be social enough. Fixing this problem would help society: the shift is necessary for businesses to function well, but the workers of the shift are neglected. Here is my tribe in Austin: tribes.tribe.net/answ1 Feel free to use the layout.

Promoting: I advertised in the Austin Chronicle for 2 weeks. It was an unsuccessful ad, but I think the problem is that Austin does not have enough businesses open during the 2AM-6AM hours.
Solution: I think that what people in Austin need for developing a social life for night shift workers is a successful model. Chicago is a larger city that probably has multiple businesses open for night shift workers. A tribe that caters to the night shift will help workers and businesses. Businesses can promote events such as the broadcasting of a rugby match @ 4AM @ such-and-such deli.

Thanks for your time,

I'm writing to let you know that my novel manuscript, THE SILENCE OF TREES, has been selected as a Semifinalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. It's one of 836 excerpts chosen out of 5000 entries that were announced on January 15th.

This has been called the American Idol for Writers. Your review counts! So far, I'm in the lead but the other Semifinalists are quickly gaining. If you have a few moments, please visit the site and read and review my 14-page excerpt from THE SILENCE OF TREES.

The link is:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0011ZCAJC

My novel is set in Ukraine during World War II, as well as in Chicago in the present day. The next stage of the competition asks Amazon customers to download, read, and review excerpts. Each review essentially counts as a vote, and the votes will be used in determining the top 100 Finalists, which will be announced on February 19.

Plus there are incentive prizes for reviewers!

For more information, you can also visit my website at www.thesilenceoftrees.com
I appreciate your review, as well as the reviews of anyone else you can forward this message on to.
"executive order" providing health benefits to gay couples. These type orders bypass
the legislative and democratic process. I, myself, didn't think it was possible to get
something as socially controversial as this in place - using my tax dollars - without
at least my elected representative or state senator having a say in it.

This has evidently been going on since last year, but slipped by myself and all my
friends somehow.
This posting is *not* a hate "statement" or intended to be gay bashing. I'm a self employed, married
heterosexual who's paying for my family's (rather expensive) health insurance out of my own pocket and
think this state sponsored health plan for *non-married* couples in unfair and unethical.

Michigan tried this and it backfired and is now going to cost yet more tax payers dollars
for them:

If you agree this is not fair, contact your local state representative and state senator. And also try writing/emailing your local TV news station to give this story some scrutiny and exposure.
Here's how to find your local legislative reps:

I recently finished school and am looking to be more active about the house and outside as the weather warms up. Utopia (my daughter, she's 2 1/2) is a social butterfly and would spend most of her time with friends given the choice, so I'm considering combining these 2 desires and offering Daytime Care at my home.

Utopia is home schooled, so preschool curriculum/age appropriate learning would be included. My method is similar to Waldorf teachings (interest based learning, learning through creative play) and includes: singing, dancing, nature walks, fairy tales, animal friendliness (we have 2 cats), pretend play, arts & crafts, basic/rudimentary sign language, colors & shapes, Types of Things, story time, free play, group/cooperative play, outdoor play, nap time, and movie time (based on interest, usually 30-60 minutes of children's educational video). I am also equipped for infant care (portable bassinet/crib, bouncer chair, infant toys, and several styles of slings for holding/carrying).

We live close to a nice park, that is a pleasant walk through a quieter neighborhood. I am an artist by nature, so I have a plethora of art supplies: beads, construction paper, white paper, crayons, glitter, non toxic glue, magazines (for collage), chalk... I'm also working on incorporating children's yoga into the daytime routine.

I'm also pretty health conscious/nutrition minded. There is no cow dairy (mostly soy, sometimes goat), no poultry or red meat (only fish about once a week; we do eat eggs), no sugary snacks/cereals/cookies (example snack: carrots and peanut butter), no sugar-laden juices or drinks (drinks are unsweetened soymilk, water, herbal tea, and fresh juice). I do make my own bread that is a mix of wheat and white flour, but am new to this so I'm still searching for the perfect recipe, one that is preferably only partially wheat mixed with non-wheat, or completely non-wheat. The staples are whole grain brown rice, whole grain oats, beans, peas, & lentils, and fresh fruits and vegetables. I buy organic when I can, and always wash ingredients. Emphasis is placed on minimally processed foods. Breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner are meals I am prepared to provide, depending on the length of the child's stay, parent requests, and time of day. If a child drinks cow milk or another dairy, I will (of course ;)) serve it if it is provided.

We live in Andersonville/Edgewater, at Hollywood & Clark. We're about a mile west of the Bryn Mawr Red Line stop, and maybe a mile and a half from the Hollywood exit on Lake Shore Drive, and about half a mile from the Broadway/Bryn Mawr/Ridge intersection. Bus Route 22/Clark drops off at Hollywood every 15 minutes or so on weekdays. Daytime Care is currently available from 7am to 7pm Monday through Wednesday for 3 children. My hourly rate is $9, and I keep records for taxes (yours and mine- deduct this next year!) If significant demand is present for Thursday and Friday, I will consider adding these days as well. Reach me on Tribe, by email (eternal.moonbeam@gmail.com) or telephone (773.409.4762) if interested, and please pass this along to anyone else who might be if you are not. Thanks and Happy Day!

Anyone who wants to be, we come from all walks, of life and adhere to a variety of beliefs. We aspire to be a Loving and Caring people toward one another and all the varied hues of our Mother Earth. To that end. we practise non-violence and peace activism, ecologically sound ways of living and respect for all beings, and ways of life. Some folks come to Rainbow for a chance to feel the Living Spirit, some for the fun of it, some for a chance to see those they Love. Most gather for a mixture of these reasons. We laugh, sing, play musical instru- ments, and share our experiences & dreams in our heartsongs. We strive to better ourselves and explore alternative life-styles, medicine, and ways to solve problems. We experience cooperative living. Sometimes we even seem to work a miracle. There are no leaders. Individuals (known as "Focalizers") try to facilitate the consensus of the, Rainbow Tribes on a local and/or national level. We circle for our meals, and councils because we are all equal. Decisions regarding a local family are made by consensus, wherever the need arises. Like at a regional picnic or council. Decision regarding the Rainbow Family of Living Light can only be made on the land, at the main tribunal council, from July 1-7th each year during the Gathering of the Tribes.

Please consider refusing to work, go to school or be otherwise complacent for this one important day of all of our lives. If this mass demonstration makes an impact, who knows? We may yet see a day when the people have a voice again. Even if you’re a cynic, it couldn’t hurt to take a day off, log off your computer and join your brothers and sisters, in solidarity, on the street.
All Day and Into the Night
The Loop
12 NOON- GRANT PARK (Jackson and Columbus)

4:30PM- FEDERAL PLAZA (Jackson and Dearborn)

INTO THE NIGHT: GRANT PARK (Jackson and Columbus)

DESCRIPTION:

All day and into the night, people will flood downtown Chicago making our determination to drive out this criminal regime known to the world! Nothing about this day will be just your "go through the motions- rally and march" protest-as-usual! Early in the day, students will walk out of school- even shut down whole campuses, people will refuse to go to work and bring their entire families, and converge with thousands in the heart of downtown at GRANT PARK. Here we begin a festival of resistance with fiery indictments of the most dangerous force in history, the Bush regime, from voices of conscience from all walks of life.

Then we will step off together and spread this movement throughout the Loop, our collective voices reverberating off the surrounding buildings and rising up to the sky! Hundreds of thousands of people downtown will be wondering what will happen that day and as our voices fill the air, they will rush to the windows and see that WE ARE WHAT WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR; WE ARE TRULY MAKING RESISTANCE IRRESISTIBLE! We'll be spreading the word to many more - distributing literature and materials that will make their way into workplaces, shopping centers, and restaurants; calling on everyone to join us after work as we make known our aim to drive out this regime throughout downtown Chicago including right at the Federal Building!

Many thousands more will join us here and will continue with us as we step off and back to Grant Park where we will continue the festival with musical and theatrical performances, and the biggest and baddest open-mic you've ever seen in your life! And all the way into the night, we'll be strategizing on where to go from here to fulfill our real aim of DRIVING OUT THE BUSH REGIME!

Public Image Enemy -
Sep 15 to Nov 10 2006

Public Image Enemy is a multidisciplinary celebration featuring artwork, performance, and music which results from the collision and collaboration of Punk Rock and Hip Hop artists.

The art and music, performance, etc. will be a celebration of the 30th anniversaries of punk rock and hip hop cultures.
(We are using these terms in the broad sense, including the sub-genres and side-genres)

We will focus on the places where the two cultures borrow from eachother and / or collaborate with each other. We are interested in hip hop artists that are influenced by punk and punk artists that are influenced by hip hop. Regardless of how much stylistic crossover there is, we are most excited about bringing the two cultures together in one forum.
Artists from each camp who don't normally work with each other have already started collaborating in preparation for this series.

Art - the art will feature graffiti art, stencil art, silkscreen art on the walls and on paper - bringing together works from the punk/ experimental/ underground rock communities and the hip-hop/ urban art-forms communities.

Music & Performance - bringing together breaking, punk/ experimental/ underground music groups, emcees, deejays, beat-boxers, performance art, and more.

Please read all; every word matters…

A. CHECK-IN:
1. Check in is at the Fountain in Wicker Park, roughly 1455 N. Damen, starting from 6pm.

This is simply a point where qualified participants will be forwarded to the next

location. Do not loiter there.
2. DO NOT arrive nude.
3. Consider coming late (closer to 9pm but NOT after) if you do not need body painting,

to relieve overcrowding.
4. Official WNBR position is the ride is rain or shine. Current forecast is quite cool.

B. TRAVEL:
1. Wicker Park is just South of the Blue line (North/O’Hare) DAMEN stop, which is 24hr;

or a 1.5 miles West of the Red line (North/Howard) NORTH/CLYBOURN stop, also 24hrs.

Also reachable by bus: Damen (#50/not 24hr), North (#72, not 24hr). Also a few miles

South/West of the Metra Clybourn stop (UPN/NW lines, limited hours). Theoretically,

bikes are allowed on trains and buses right now, some limits apply.
2. Wicker Park is about .7 miles West of the 90/94 North Avenue exit (#48B), or about

2.7 miles West of the L.S.D. North Avenue (Rt. 64) exit.
3. Parking near Wicker park is difficult. Main streets may be full or have limited

hours, side streets are zoned. With patience, you may find something within a mile.

Best bet is West of the six corners, on Damen or Division or Milwaukee. Or consider

paying for parking. Share rides if possible.

C. NUDITY:
1. Technically, public nudity is not legal in Chicago. Code 8-8-080 (Indecent exposure)

prohibits visibility of pubis, female nipples, and other areas which in common practice

today are exposed on beaches.
2. All riders are encouraged to cover to the point of legal. Thong and duct tape for

example would due. Even a sock helps. Flesh tone undies are perfect.
3. DO carry clothes with you at all times; before, during and after ride. If a ride

coordinator or police tell you to put something on, do so immediately.
4. DO NOT arrive for the ride nude. DO NOT undress until the ride is underway.
5. Official WNBR policy is bare-as-you-dare. So be naked if you wish and dare, but it’s

at your own risk.
6. As an alternative, wear a costume. Outlandish is cool.

D. BRING: (remember, there’s no place to safely leave anything behind)
ID! Clothes, Water, Money, Sharable Snacks, Protein, Safety Gear (helmet/blinkers/etc),

Towel, Bullhorn, Handouts (candies/confetti), Musical Instrument, Ideas, Good Vibes.

E. PHOTOS:
Don’t bring a camera unless you have been preauthorized or are well known to the

coordinators. Don’t expect to be able to control being photographed en-route.

F. VOLUNTEERS:
1. Make sure your phones are charged!
2. Identify yourself at the check-in point for instructions.

Additional info (such as rockin’ after-party location!) will be provided at check-in.

Questions, comments, reply to andrew@bedno.com

If you have an urgent question on ride day, try 312/909-9313, but only if you really

really really really must.
The Greening of Chicago
Mayor Richard Daley wants to turn the City of Big Shoulders into the most environmentally friendly city in the U.S., and he's not just blowing hot air
By ERIC FERKENHOFF/CHICAGO

Chicago, a blue-collar city of asphalt and glass and concrete canyons, would seem an odd place for admitted tree-hugger Sadhu Johnston to think he could save the planet. But Johnston, Mayor Richard M. Daley' s environmental commissioner, believes that cities are actually the answer to the earth's environmental ills. And with that in mind, he is working to turn Chicago into what he claims will be the most environmentally friendly city in the U.S. — as well as the nation's center for environmental design and the manufacturing of components for the production of alternative energy.

If it works — and Daley is betting a hefty sum it will, with promises to buy millions in solar panels, for example — the green movement here is expected to yield the city perhaps billions in saved energy costs and new business."This is way beyond tree hugging in Chicago," said Johnston, 31, who before coming to Chicago helped dust some of the rust off of Cleveland's image by serving as executive director of the non-profit Cleveland Green Building Coalition. "This is about quality of life. What we're talking about is creating a city that exists in harmony with the world, a place that can be a model. Cities have long been hurtful to the environment. Raw materials came in and waste went out. We' re trying to redefine that relationship, and cities can be models."

In much the same way that cities like Austin and San Francisco latched onto the boom in the Internet or biotech industry to propel their economies, Chicago is working hard to rev up its manufacturing and capitalize on the growth in green construction and wind and solar energies. But can Chicago, such a muscular city, shake its industrial, broad-shouldered image by showing that cites are not the bane of the environment. Does it deserve, in short, the title of America's Green Thumb?

"We're doing it," Daley said in a brief interview earlier this week while also playing host to an environmental summit for U.S. mayors and making a pitch for the 2016 Olympics. "We're aggressive in terms of the environment and we're educating the people and bringing business along."

The city first drew real attention to its greening efforts, when it planted a lush garden on the rooftop of City Hall. Now, be it McDonald's, Wal-Mart or the Apple store, businesses wanting a relaxation of density building rules or financing to help construct new offices are being convinced to plant so-called green roofs. The result: the city has planted or negotiated the construction of over 2 million square feet of rooftop gardens, more than all other U.S. cities combined.

While in office Daley, who shut down the lakefront airport Miegs Field in a bald power play to create a big park, has ordered that the heads of all city departments make their operations environmentally friendly. That includes paving alleys with special asphalt to better absorb water, buying a greener fleet of vehicles or forbidding city vehicles to idle more than five minutes.

Chicago is now among the largest users of green energy in the country, with a goal of using renewable energy for roughly a quarter of city operations. To help reach that goal, it has already attracted two solar panel manufacturers to set up shop in the area.

The Windy City, which has won international awards for its environmental agenda, also boasts one of the world's only municipal buildings given a platinum rating for its green design and operations by the organization Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. That honor is more than a little ironic, since the building, the Center for Green Technology, sits on a former illegal dump that was part of a sweeping federal investigation that sent several aldermen to jail for taking bribes.

Since Daley, a Democrat whose administration is mired in a sweeping federal investigation into hiring practices and patronage schemes, took office in 1989, some 500,000 trees have been planted, the city has been decorated with fancy planters, park space has increased and the lakefront, while still soiled with pollution, is being cleaned and preserved at a level never before seen.

"Look at this," Daley said, motioning to a wide yard in the depressed Dearborn Homes public housing development. To be sure, the neighborhood, among the city's poorest, isn't much to brag about. But it is green. Trees have been planted, the lawns have been tidied and are lush, despite the broken concrete and glass that litters nearby playgrounds. "This wouldn't have happened before."

But not all is so green here. A broad recycling program in the city, which was touted as a model for urban America a decade ago, has not yielded the expected results, as some 87% of the city's total refuse is still not being fully recycled. And the air quality, while improved, remains a sore topic.

Still, the city's efforts are drawing attention. Green Bay Mayor James Schmitt, who launched his Greener Green Bay campaign during his recent State of the City speech, is sold and makes no apologies for trying to copy Chicago. "We're a blue-collar, paper-making, NFL football town," he says. "We're very young in this, and we're going to use Chicago as a model."

However, to the delight of their fans, the band is back on tour and it is no
surprise that Chicago is part of the initial venture. "Chicago is like a
huge mish mash of all these different clubs, we've played a different one
almost every time we've been there. My memories of Chicago are mostly of
driving around completely lost, looking at the trains, and even riding the
trains there. It is one of our favorite cities to play, it has always been a
great town to us. The fans have always been strong. We met Fareed Haque
there, he's a tornado - it was awesome to get to meet him and hang out. We
also met one of our best supporters, Ted Kartzmen, one of the great angels
to have come down and help The Slip out. He's such a good guy. We met him at
our first gig in Chicago, at Schubas in 1997 or so. We've been fortunate in
Chicago. It is one of the most historically awesome music towns and I think
people who live there know that and have taken a lot of pride in that, or at
least they should."

Musically astute young Chicagoans also take pride in one of the city's
latest musical pearls, Umphrey's McGee - who will be playing an early show
the same night at Chicago Theater (the timing will allow dutiful audiophiles
to catch both). Barr's voice gets spirited when asked about the ever-growing
UM.

"My opinion about those guys is that they are fucking great guys and
tremendous musicians. I've hung out with them a few times and seen them
play. It's wonderful to see such an honest group of guys have such success.
Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to see them play since High Sierra a
couple of years ago. Jake is just an incredible guitar player, just
shocking. I'm scared when I'm in the same room with [him and] a guitar."

::: The Slip will be playing Friday Marth 10th at Martyrs' with Apollo
Sunshine & Sam Champion. The show starts at 9, The Slip play last, Tickets
are $15 & you can buy them here

http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?ID=M713663727860154523224965
This could be the year that Illinois protects medical marijuana patients from arrest and prison. Lawmakers have returned to Springfield to begin the 2006 session of the Illinois General Assembly, and last week Sen. John Cullerton (D-Chicago) introduced S.B. 2568 — the Medical Cannabis Act. The Marijuana Policy Project is poised to capitalize on the progress we made last year pushing H.B. 407 — Rep. Larry McKeon's (D-Chicago) medical marijuana bill that was endorsed by the Illinois Nurses Association — but we can't do it without your help.

Please click here to write a letter to your state senator, urging him or her to support Cullerton's medical marijuana bill. With just a few clicks, our automated system will allow you to send a pre-written letter to your legislator, or you can compose the letter yourself.

Please take action now.

Then, please send a letter-to-the-editor to your local papers, expressing your hope that lawmakers will end Illinois' cruel policy of criminalizing the seriously ill by passing S.B. 2568. With just a few clicks, our automated system will easily allow you to send a letter to newspapers in Illinois. Feel free to draw from the talking points that we have provided, but remember that a personalized letter is more likely to be published than a form letter.

Please send a letter-to-the-editor today.

Last session, despite massive support for medical marijuana in Illinois, seriously ill patients suffered a setback when H.B. 407 was voted down 6-5 in the House Human Services Committee. Democrats Naomi Jakobsson (Champaign) and Michelle Chavez (Cicero) joined the committee Republicans in defeating the bill. H.B. 407 was co-sponsored by Reps. John Fritchey (D-Chicago) and Karen Yarbrough (D-Broadview) and would have protected patients who use medical marijuana at the recommendation of their physicians from arrest and prison.

Don't let your legislators neglect this issue for another year. Let them know that you are outraged by Illinois' criminalization of seriously ill patients and that you expect them to pass S.B. 2568 without delay.

Please write to your senator and then send a letter-to-the-editor today.

Further, if you or someone you know is suffering from a debilitating condition or is a medical professional, member of law enforcement, or public official who would be willing to testify at hearings, lobby lawmakers, or assist in some other way, please e-mail adam@mpp.org today.

Rhode Island just became the 11th state to protect medical marijuana patients from arrest and incarceration. It's time for Illinois to follow suit. Polls consistently show massive public support for this issue; in fact, a statewide poll by McCulloch Research & Polling in 2002 showed that 77% of Illinoisans support protecting seriously ill medical marijuana patients from criminal penalties.

Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project. Please pass this message along to your friends and family in Illinois so that others can stand up for the state’s most vulnerable residents.

SPRINGFIELD -- The state's new gay rights law takes effect Sunday, making Illinois one of only a handful of states that explicitly bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The Human Rights Act goes into effect New Year's Day, along with more than 280 other laws passed by state lawmakers and signed by Gov. Rod Blagojevich during 2005. New statutes crack down on identity thieves, sex offenders, illegal drug producers and drunken or reckless drivers.

When looking at condos and townhouses online, I see these huge buildings. What's it like to live like that? I currently live in a single family home in a suburban neighborhood, which I find too boring for words. But what's that like?

I also see homes for sale in the south side of Chicago that are reasonably priced, and look kind of nice. Is Chicago deeply segregated? Are the black neighborhoods where white people do not live?

I was just visiting in Pittsburgh and the racial divide was clear and succinct. Same in Chicago?

Is the Southside of Chicago the baddest part of town. And if you go down there do you better just beware of a man named Leroy Brown?

What do you do when the weather is below zero? Stay home, or is the city still lively?

Clever 'Bark!' gets Studio Theatre off to frisky start?

By BETTY MOHR
Daily Southtown Theater Critic
The show opens with the sound of barking dogs, drawing a collective laugh from the audience.

And when a half-dozen pooches (played by humans) romp onto the stage, you can see dog love glistening in just about every theatergoer's eye.

Review

Appropriately named "Bark!" this cute and clever musical inaugurates the new 144-seat Studio Theatre of the Chicago Center for the Performing Arts with lots of laughs and many poignant moments. It's a lot like a dog version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cats" — but a lot better.

Written by Gavin Geoffrey Dillard, this Chicago premiere has a simple plot in which six dogs are stuck in a city pound hoping to be adopted. There is some urgency because if the dogs don't appeal to new owners within six weeks, they'll be put to sleep.

With fine direction by Kay Cole, who also choreographed the paw steps, the six dogs are played by Chicago performers who, with exquisite body language, transform their human selves into canines.

Each actor brings a distinct personality to an animal role. Among the standout performances are the frisky, sweet pup Rachmaninoff, who goes by the shortened nickname of Rocks. Played with great charm by the fresh-faced Devin DeSantis, he quickly wins over everyone's heart.

The French poodle Chanel is a snobby gal portrayed by talented Cory Goodrich. Goodrich is a riot as the opera-loving highbrow who is pursued by Sam, a low-class m
