Chöd is a Tibetan Buddhist practice with a strong animistic feel to it.
There are many different Chöd traditions, practiced in all the schools of Buddhism in Tibet & most of them can be traced back to the great Yogini of the 11th century, Machig Labdron.
"Chöd is first & foremost a method for releasing the fixation on the intrinsic reality of a self & of phenomena. In that sense it is no different from any other practice of Buddhism...[but it] is distinctive in its radical methods of intensifying obsession & inducing emotional upheavals & apparitions of fear, the better to observe & sever them."
Sarah Harding, Machig's Complete Explanation, Snow Lion Publications 2003.
