I've never seen pix of his VWs but I have the sense that he either has or once had a '58 oval window Bug. And if I'm delusional on this point I don't care. He's written some totally funny shit about driving a VW and the trevails of getting parts for a vintage car. I feel your pain, brother! Cheap aftermarket parts are sucky mcSucky! NOS all the way man! -

Fri, May 19, 2006 - 8:36 PMI have a 1957 Baja Bug...the last year of the oval window. 1958 to 1964 had a more rectangular window. That rear window was enlarged in 1965 and again in 1972.
...or something like that.
My most bitchin' ride was a 1965 Cal-Look Bug I used to own. Slammed, Porsche alloys, disc brakes, one-piece windows, de-chromed, shaved turn signals, T-bars, louvered deck lid, Hurst shifter, Porsche gauges, and a 2084cc engine! -

I was doing a body-off restoration / customization when the garage burned down where it was stored.
It had Porsche disc brakes, narrowed front suspension, Porsche rims, Porsche brake / clutch pedals, racing seats, and many of the same items found on my 1965 Bug. -

wow! a body-off job! I've always wanted to do that but lack the resources to pull it off.
My parents have a two-car garage that is absolutely filled with crap...but underneath it all is a '56 Karmann Ghia they bought when I was four. It hasn't been driven since the day they brought it home, but my brother has had fantasies of restoring it for many years.
I digress. god I can be such a geek sometimes.
that car sounds like it was definitely bitchin' despite its untimely demise!
