Parade Information

The 4th of July parade begins at 11:30am. The Wild Rovers staging area (#44) is at the corner of 9th and H Street, next to the First United Methodist church. The flyer says that "walking groups need to be in position by 10:30 am". It also says that it is free parking in the 6th & 7th Ave parking garages.

RenFaire is right around the corner! Shall we start practicing for the shows?

Melissa, I think we, at least I, may also need some guidance in the costuming department. At the Wild Rovers meetings, much emphasis has been placed on being prepared for weather extremes, and I don't really know how to do that with belly dance outfits. And what about shoes? You've already said we should have something, but what's appropriate and where can we get it?

I'm looking forward to dancing with my fellow Ciccia Bellas again!

Just a reminder that my Spring/Summer 12-week session of Belly Dance 101 begins this coming Wednesday.

Details:
Explore the movements and rhythms of the Middle East, North Africa and the Romani Trail in this 12-week survey course covering posture, vocabulary, history, zill patterns, group improvisation, veil play, fundamental isolations, traveling steps, turns, shimmies & supple, serpentine undulations. All you need is clothing you can move in, bare feet, an open mind and a sense of humor. Come and play in this unique and sexy pursuit of fun and fitness! Located at the Yoga, Inner Dancer Studio 2610 Spenard Road in the Surya (Sun) Room. Wednesday evenings from 7:15-8:30 p.m. Cost is $120/12 weeks or $13/drop in.

I know most of us on tribe are already off the deep end in this art form but if you know anyone on the outside looking for an encapsulated 30,000 view introductory course and you like my style, I'd appreciate the referral.

**New Class**
For those who have completed the Belly Dance 101 foundation and are interested in a deeper exploration of my favorite topics (Vintage Orientale, authentic and theatrical dances of Romani Trail, dancing with props, etc.) I'm adding a technique class on Wednesday evenings from 8:45-9:45 p.m. Please bring your zills. In May/June I will be focusing on Wild Rover Ren Faire Dance prep...combos from Turkish Orientale, Rom Dance, American skirt dance, some group improv performance exercises, and perhaps some circus play. Cost is $12/drop in or $10 if paid in advance for the whole month. My main goal for this class is to increase the technical and performance skills of the dancers of Ciccia Bella. I'm curious to see where we can take it.

This first performance is always the hardest..with it tucked safely into your hip belts, I hope you all sleep soundly with huge smiles that the rest will be easier and more fun!

Mira Betz in Fairbanks the last weekend of June and Elizabeth Artemis Mourat the last weekend of August in Anchorage (flyer not out yet but talk to Michele at Alaska Dancer Emporium for details. I'm planning to attend both. A wonderful dancer named Hadia will be coming to Fairbanks in September/October but details aren't out yet on Hadia. I hope to attend hers as well!

Anyone free tomorrow day? Or Saturday day? Or Sunday afternoon/evening? Monday day or night? The room in my house is nil, though . . . I might could move a couple of chairs around . . . there'd only be room for 2 of us, I'd guess, though. And I live in Chugiak, if that's a deciding factor for anyone. But I can commute to Anywhere.

Combos as promised

Hi guys,

if you have time to practice...here's some combos that we played with last week...in no particular order.

Cairo Glides (Susannah Del Vecchio format) - walk 3 steps diagonal starting with downstage leg and arabesque on 4, cross front (catch step) with arabesquing foot, step out, cross back - pause- unwind cross turn to face front. Repeat alternate diagonal.

Boz sexy saunter (Jim Boz format) - Arabic to right diagonal 2 X, then left diagonal, 2 slow cross steps with shoulder rolls and/or low snake arms, cross for third step...pause/pose....and unwind turn. Variation Arabic 2 to side slowly 2 times, cross step and pose/pause...then unwind turn.

Side-to-side sway - have we covered this one yet? if not, it's in your future! :-)!

Rap combo (might be mine but feels really comfy so may not be) - 5 hip downs while pivoting body from front to diagonal, pause, then pelvic roll and body wave up. Side that is facing audience hip "locks" straight up then swings out side side, reverse up/side/side. omi diamond side/front, side, neutral) into gooey omi circle. Reverse.

Candle hands for necklace holders...play with extension and don't drip wax.

3/4 walk with variations for 4.

hip circle walk with step together step touch.

Veil stuff...

If you have a couple yard piece of fabric or even a towel at home, you might play with the following
Sandstorm (from shoulder to shoulder)

Envelope into peek-a-boo into assassin eyes

If anyone likes to spin....work on the step turns/shene turns with arms in high and low v. Totally not required.

I can't remember off hand what else we talked about. If you remind me, I'll try to come up with the breakdown. See you'all tomorrow!

Show "1001 Nights" April 11th

The show is coming up soon on April 11th & it`s pretty full.
We have :
-beautiful Aradia with 2 costume changes: Romany 9/8 & Egyptian & Lebanese dance.
-"Nomadia" ( I dont know the theme yet) & Danielle`s Solo of Genie from 1001 Nights.
-Winona & Heather flying from Kodiak for a duet of vengeful ghosts of beheaded wive of Prince Saiidi.
-Heather ( Ivy ) will do a solo as well.
-Katarina ( Katey) is doing a butterfly dance.
- "Aurora Borealis" has "Isis Dance" with wings.
-Nicole Deroin & Penny Gage from Fairbanks dancing a duet ( dont know the theme yet)
-Nicole has a solo for us as well.
-Melissa with her students dancing Ali Baba & the 40 thieves dance.
-"Mirage" is dancing 3 numbers: Gypsi dance & Saltan with Princes dance.
- & "Sheherazade" does the opening & the Dance of the misbehaving Heram.

Remember, Dead line for the music is March 20th.
For those of you who is not sure about the theme for the dance, please work on it & let me know.

Alaska Dancer Emporium has Consignment Costumes

Just in case you didn't hear it from one of the instructors in town ....

I have consignment costumes in store until October 20. There is a beautiful Madame Abla in a purple with a touch of green in the beading, a GREAT beginner set in red as well as one in black and gold. Two knock out blue and silver numbers that could be used for either MED or as a ballroom outfit (Think dances with the stars). (pass the word along if you know anyone who ballroom dances).

Also, a last minute reminder that I will be placing a group sugar petal order on Monday the 15th. Contact me at the store if you are interested (33DANCE).

Earthquakes and Hipshakes

Dear Dancers
To those of you who haven't heard, Anchorage's next bellydance workshop "Earthquakes and Hipshakes" (Hum...What do you think about that?;-) will be held in November. For those of you who have been waiting patiently for me to formally announce the Earthquakes and Hipshakes workshop....Thank You!
The workshop is scheduled for November 10th and 11th and will be held at the Alaska Club Midtown from 11am to 4pm, Saturday and from 1:30pm to 7pm, Sunday.
Our guest instructor for this event is Isidora Bushkovski. Isidora is one of featured dancers in the production of Temptation of BellyDance, filmed at the historical Oriental Center in Denver, Colorado. The cost for the workshop entry has an Early Bird special of $150 for two days and that price will be available until November 1st!! After the 1st, prices will be $ 90 for a one day attendance or $180 for two days.
Topics of the workshop on Saturday:
Sword - covers balancing the sword on various parts of the body, correct posture, general moves and big tricks
Note: it is not necessary to have a fancy sword. Students are encouraged to bring extra swords to workshop for group practice and even the scabbards are helpful for getting the feel of balance and choreography. If you would like to purchase your own sword prior to the workshop, you can contact Michelle at Alaska Dancer Emporium.
Isidora's Belly Dance shimmy bootcamp - which includes 3 different versions of the shimmy drills: basic shimmy drills, shimmy drills with zills for intermediate and the drill with layered shimmies and zills);-),
Topics of the workshop on Sunday:
Cane Choreography - introduction to the methods for holding and controlling the cane as well as dance choreography with the cane.
Note: Slender canes are easier to twirl. And if time permits and we will move quickly through this to allow Isidora the chance to share other topics that she can offer workshop students...so whatever, guys you will choose to learn;-)

I am also proud to announce there will be a performance night on Saturday the 10th starting at 7:30pm and being held at the Alaska Wildberry Theatre.

If you all haven't checked out the beautiful love messages about all for last weekends show on the Aurora Borealis tribe, you should. It will make you happy!

Thank you Kim (and entourage), Lisa, Nikki, Fauna, Norma, and K8! You are the greatest sports ever. Dancing barefoot on pavement in mud puddles with smiles and laughter for several hours seems a little wacky...but somehow was so much fun!

You put on several performances of joy, colorful abandon, friendship, soulful beauty and free-fall (and free-for-all) fun that what I hope to convey with this Mediterranean-fusion style. I felt like I was dancing with the ancient archetypal Roma in my dreams. I'm proud of you!

I was trying to update my hotmail to their new live thing and it's gotten caught in some horrible loop...hence I no longer have access to my account and can't send or recieve messages. AFTER PARTY @ WINTER THYME

Okay ladies!!! The Winter Thyme Cafe (accross from the Captaion Cook is willing to host our after party after the Belly Dance Spectacular Spectacular!!!
They will do a limited menu, so that everythig isn't just chaos and they know what to prepare for. The restaurant seats about 45, so they are going to leave it open to the public , but reserve our table
I told the guy we would be between 20-30 but if anyone wants to give me a guesstimate on who they know is coming or would be interested in coming that would be great!!!!
Their menu is very reasonable priced. Everything is between $6-$13.00 and everything is deeeelicious!! (It's fine dining for the not so rich guy! {that's me})
I have also requested an automatic gratuity be added to the checks, so that there is no worries or confusion.
Try to bring cash or checks to make it easy on the servers.
Oh yeah and most importantly......... they have WINE!!!!!!
I hope this sounds good to everyone... I have been investigating and this is our best/ most inexpensive option. There will be vegetarian, fresh seafood, and carniverous options.

This gathering will be a thank you to Grace Ann for having us all together and being super cool!! ;--) As well, as a celebration of all the talent and beauty that Alaska has to offer. We are to be celebrated!

HELP! Lost camera

Hello all, I need your help. I left my camera on one of the tables in the tent at the performance today! I don't know how to get a hold of anyone at the moment, so this is the only way I knew how to get it done! If anyone saw it or has it, please let me know. It's a Canon Digital Elph in a small blue camera case with a thin black strap. It has pictures of my children on it. Did anyone find it? Thank you for your help! *hugs*

Practice is 4:30 p.m.-6:15 p.m. at Kate's tomorrow (Thursday). We will practice Habdouni first, then Fan, then Strings. I have an open house at 6:30 p.m. and Kate has class at 7:00 p.m. Norma is going to try and make it early but may not make it until 5:00 p.m. (the reason we are doing Habdouni first).

Work needs to be done. Wonderful Kate has offered her place. The puzzle is finding time that works for most. My days are free before 4 for anyone who needs some refreshing before we get together for a troupe practice. Seems like Thursday evenings worked well for most.

I know that Norma, Me, Fauna, Kim, Kate and Lisa are in for sure. Marla has a conflict. Haven't heard from Alisha. My little buddy Nikki (who once danced with Arctic Mirage with Kim) may join us as well.

I want to check with Darc to see if she's up for fan dance or Habdouni (just a little different from the original version).

I wanted to post the playlist for the Trapper Creek Music and Arts Festival for the people not on my email. Just let me or Melissa know if you'd like to dance, or you can come out, camp, and indulge in some music and nature.

The first festival this summer was such a blast and I can't wait for next weekend, one of the best ways to soak in the late summer. It would be great to see you all out there:)

Jimmy Jazz, Boot, Cicciabella Dance Troupe, Willard Kaml, Trapper Creek String Band, Scout, Here To Play, Nicole Lee, DJ Ariel (my favorite DJ ever), The AMAZING Henry Duffel, Culture Brother, Spenard Satans Old Time Clubhouse Band, Baker, Matt Raney, DJ J-Wail
There will also be an Open Mic

August 17-19, 2007 at Boot's Bison Ranch
Dancers get in free, or its $25 for the weekend. There's a Family Camping section and an Insomniac section. You can find me at the headquarters by the stage:) Cicciabella dances at 10 pm on Saturday.
For dog owners, Trapper Creek is a leash-LESS festival. Dogs are encouraged to run around, they have a blast and get along great everytime.

Directions: Between Mile 114 and Mile 115 of the Parks HWY (a few minutes past Talkeetna), Take Susitna River Road East, Turn Right on Bradley Road and follow it all the way down.
The boys clearly mark the way with signs, you can find it easily without directions.

costume ideas

it was wonderful to hear so many great ideas for the costumes last night.

i thought i would start a thread so we could mash them all together and at the end of the thread - a stunning costume will be born!!

i love the simple coin bra idea - sounds like melissa has enough to share. I also have an extra coin bra - it is a little different than the ones the rest of you have but i think it would work. I think it is a C cup. but if you put a regular tan bra undereath anyone could wear it.

i was thinking to simplify the logistics of the costume we could be Gothic mummies - namely using large safety pins to attach everything together so that they show. I have a few coats that i have done this with and i still get compliments on them. God bless safety pins.

Mummified: any white clothing that is soaked in tea or instant coffee (works better - less time to brew)

Arms:
we can make GREAT gaunlets out of a pair of tights and some scissors. in fact almost all my gaunlets are made that way. a simple pair of white tights - mummified, cut the toes out to match the length of your arm, then one little hole to slide your middle finger thru - to hold them in place. slahs the out side (over the forearm,)

Next cut a piece of t-shirt about 8 inches wide (you could make a long triangle even - attach the point of triangle to the upper arm and lower at the wrist) lay the 8in piece out and rip strips up the length of it - end product, a piece 8 in long with approx 8 strips dangling from it.

now put your gaunlet on - and have some attach the triagle piece around your arm using safety pins, if we are not satisfied that there are sufficent dangles we can add another triangle piece.

the nice thing about ripping a t-shirt, it rolls up - we may or may not want this effect on our arms - the other option would be to use sheet material instead, then the dangles would lay flat - giving a fuller effect.

Pants:
i have a couple ideas:

#1 : boxers, i know it sounds weird but hear me out, i first thought bike shorts - but the problem (for me any way is that bike shorts cut into me forcing my fat to be heard!!! hmmm maybe i should buy a bigger size??? doh!
boxers are cheap 3 in a package - i know we can find them in plain white - we could even do the little hearts HAHAHA.

attach strips of sheets to the waist band, fold the saist band down and safety pin in place - this will create a "car wash" skirt look.

next cut up a t-shirt - mummify it to be either darker or lighter than the "skirt" - to create the "boat" belt that marla mentioned. this can just be tied in place or cut into 4-6 pieces to create a Grommet looking belt but using safety pins instead of the grommets.

we could sparkle this up using fabric paint in either silver or gold - draw some cool designs or just accent it.

Im not sure if we have enough plain (not attached to fabric) coin belts to go around - i think i have 2 silver and one small gold one. these would need to be attached to the "boat" skirt using of course - safety pins.

Bra:
starting with the coin bra - attach alternating t-shirt/sheet strips so that we have different effects - attach them where ever - on bra straps, below the cups to create a tummy cover, along the back strap - so that they are all unique.
You could use a strip of sheet to go across the cup, partially covering the bra - peolpe love what they cant see. maybe come across 1 bra strap - follow the cup down and leave a tail to dance - heheh some one in the audience will be waiting for that piece to fall off - but once again - go goth - safety pins.

Head/Face.

I know a few dancers have other dances they are doing - so no time for a make up change - dont worry im not safety pinning your face - but close. Viola a mask.

1 strip of cloth (your choice) with eye holes cut out - decorate it with your "make up", then tie it on your face. two bonus' for the price of one - we can get really creative here - and individual.

some ideas are : the bright red eyes that you see in the geisha dancing or egyptian eyes or gothic hollowed out look or glitter glitter glitter the ideas are endless really.

we could also attach skinny strips all around the back side of the mask to create "dreads" mixed in with your own hair.

head piece - wouldnt tiaras be fun???? but i think of way to make them stay on thru some of the moves unless....... we safety pinned them to our heads - ahh come on.. you know you want to be pierced!!

actually - we could make it work with a head band - cheap paper tiaras from party world and my handy dandy hot glue gun - cover the head band in strips and some "dreads" if you desire and viola - a stunning head piece.

ok guys that is it for my ideas. I figure - it should each take us a couple hours to make all this - it is the cheapest i could think of to make a stunning costume.

my shopping list is:
1 pack of t-shirts
1 boxer short
instant coffee
fabric paint
1 set of sheets
2 packages of Large safety pins
head band
paper tiara
1 pair of tights

please please please add your ideas - so we can mash them all together - that is how stunning costumes are born.

Mummies practice...

Hi guys,

I think I left phone messages for everyone. Let's get together at Laughing Lotus at 8:30 p.m. for about an hour tomorrow (Monday night) to put our head's together on MUMMIES (everyone who can make it). I'll distribute the music and the mapping info and we can talk storyline concepts and a do little bit of movement. Kim's out of town until Wednesday and I haven't heard back from Joanna Lee.

We'll also discuss if we can get far enough to meet on Tuesday after Carrie's class at Laughing Lotus or at Kate's house. Kate's place is free. At LL we'll have to split the cost. If we decide to do so, I'll have her email directions out to all.

Hi guys,

Thanks to the WONDERFUL Danielle donating tons of her time, technology and talent today, we have a MUMMY song!!!!! i need to burn copies or somehow get it to you all...wish I knew how to email it....

The Spenard Rec Center has some availalbility after 8:30 on several nights, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday nights and on Saturdays. We pay $3 to use the dance room and have to share nicely if others want to use it with us. Just another option...

I think this Thursday evening could be a good time to have an initial meeting...share music, discuss costuming, start to play with shapes and ideas and do the 30,000 foot conversation. Now we just need a when and where.

Guys,

I'm sorry to be a lousy leader right now... this UAA theatre project is kicking my butt. I feel like I'll turn the corner as of tomorrow afternoon but I'm been up until after midnight every night and up all night at weird times with ideas and inspirations and work and general freaking. As of today I'm starting to have some fun so I'll have some attention and energy to put towards other things I care about....like my kids and you'all.

I haven't burned your music, havent' worked on the dance since Fairbanks. If we meet tomorrow night I'm wasting your time. I'd like to use the time to burn you all the clipped together music and put it together with the prelim notes from what I did in my "inspiration session" on the literal mountain top with the wild bunnies North of FBX. It felt good, great even, goose bumps and all so I think I can pull it all together pretty ok with a little uninterrupted focus....if I can find my notes.

Let me know if you can make it Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Spenard Rec Center. You'll have to pay them $3 for use of the dance room upstairs. I won't charge anything. If you can't make it, we'll find a way to catch you up, don't worry.

I'd like to burn music and leave it at the REI woolies for you all to pick up and get familliar with. I'd love your ideas and inspirations. If you have any images that come to mind, please share. Also costume ideas, etc. We can do this...time is short, your leader is a mess, but you are brilliant...

Oh, by the way, I commited us to the Trapper Creek Music and Art Festival on Saturday night August 18 for an hour long show. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested. If we don't have too many, I can drop it to half hour. Kate's friend has 80 beautiful acres that we are welcome to camp on. My honey and kids are coming along. We need to find time to practice for this as well... :-)!
