While chattering away this last Wednesday at our COMFy anniversary chat, I brought up the idea of an art book round robin between interested artistic and creative COMFy members. We were talking about the vendor's Dross Box idea and I think the trigger was Apple's comments about making her own books.
The general idea of an art book or art journal round robin is something like this:
Everyone chooses a book. This might be a handmade book, a store bought empty journal, an old book you picked up at the thrift shop that you want people to paint and paste right over the worlds. A list of members and "circled is made and everyone participating sends their selected book (along with the theme they have chosen for their book if there isn't a group theme already selected) to the next person in the circle. Each member then adds art to a designated number of pages (usually 1-4) and then mails the book they are working on to the next person on the list. The books revolve around, usually a deadline is given not to hold onto any one book for more than two weeks or so, and eventually you get your book back filled with beautiful words and images.
More ideas popped up on the chat and suddenly the idea of making this our very own "Faerieworlds Yearbook" took shape. The theme for all books would be Faerieworlds and Faeries. Each participant would bring their book to this year's Faerieworlds and Apple (or was it Maralily - oh dear, someone will remember) said they'd carve out a spot where we can stack the books. Inside each book, on the first page or two, would give information on who owns each book. People would drop off their own book, hopefully early on the first day of the festival, and then everyone would return sometime during the weekend to sign ("reserve") several pages of each book. On the last day of the festival you would pick up one of the books (not your own) to begin.
I liked the idea of doing at least three pages each. One page would be a "yearbook page" - a photo or drawing of yourself with some personal info. The other two pages (or one or three, there would be flexibility in case someone had an idea that was slightly different) would be their contribution to the FW/faery theme. You might do a sketch or painting, collage work, more photography, poetry you love or create, an artistic journal page describing your experiences and/or thoughts. Anything that is visually appealing and true to the theme of the book.
When you finished working on the first book you brought home you would send the book (by mail or take advantage of folks that live nearby by passing books on by hand) to someone else. Eventually all the books would be completed by all the signed participants and be returned to their original owners and we will all have a beautiful book filled with magic and art and the energy of this amazing group.
I'll try to keep the group organized by -
keeping a list of participants online that is accessible to everyone (probably a yahoo list or tribe something of that nature). Participants will be able to access names, emails, mailing addresses, and any other contact info (phone #'s) of other participants to keep the books moving 'round. I'll send out reminders and encouragement to folk.
Here are some things to remember if you want to play.
You will be committing to finishing each of the books. Your time may vary but as a general rule of thumb I'm expecting that each book will require a few hours on an evening of your time. Or, if you are doing something that requires layers of work (painting a color before writing over it, or letting glue dry on added bits and sparkles) you might be spending a few minutes here and there over several nights. Multiple this time commitment by how many people are in the group. If six of us play, that's six evenings. If twenty of us play, that's twenty evenings. There are ways to make the time less while still giving your best efforts. If you're worried about time, you could plan ahead, do similar things in each book and just add a few personal touches when each book arrives.
You also are committing to the cost of mailing each book on to the next person. Since these are books, they will qualify for media rate through US mail, which is extremely economical compared to regular mail.
The journal round robins I've known or had friends participate in have all been 95% successful. There is always that one person that gets overwhelmed and books logjam and then they feel guilty and the guiltier they feel the more they hold onto books and ... argh! It's only human nature that there are occasional problems. And sadly, from time to time (although rarely) a book disappears. But this sort of thing should be less likely in a group like this where we all stay in touch all the time. And if something comes up in someone's personal life, chaos and crisis lurk in the dark woods everyone walks on occasion, the best thing to do is pass the book on unfinished and plan on having it sent back to you when times are sunnier, or if necessary bowing out gracefully. We'll all understand.
So, that's the idea. I'm thinking we can be less structured about where to send each book as we finish it, to accommodate the fact that there are clusters of people who live nearby and who can take advantage of that to reduce the need to mail. But I can work that into the list once I have mailing addresses by putting those participants in a row together.
We can toss ideas around a bit more too, before anything is finalized. We came up with a lot of great ideas just discussing it on the chat. There's also the alternative of passing out pages to folk and everyone taking them all home and then mailing them off when finished. People would then BIND their own pages, creating a book. That would reduce the chance of losing books or having them get piled up somewhere along the list. And it would allow people to do similar processes for all the pages at the same time - i.e. painting back colors, gluing or adding photos. We'd lose media rate but the resulting pages would be lighter, perhaps even cheaper to mail. Not as sturdy as books, but ultimately perhaps better because of the creativity needed to put them together in unique and beautiful ways.
So far I know Apple, Maralily, Jasmine and I think Lyra have said they want to play. Who else wants their very own Faerieworlds Yearbook!?
"Hi Hawk - it was really fun sitting next to you in 3rd period Spell Casting. Remember junior prom nite? Owmygawd! Your Tink Tux rocked!! Faerieworlds 2009 4-ever! XXOO - Your friend, Laume"
Well, okay, maybe not exactly like a yearbook.....

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 6:26 PMOops, forgot Whisperfae. Fixed that. So, I think I'll leave it up to folks whether they want to do pages or actual books. I'm leaning towards pages because it makes it a lot more hassle free for both me and others. And because I'm liking the idea of creating the actual book when all the pages are gathered back together. Something really organic and woodsy looking. Or maybe dark and mysterious. Or.... So, what do others think?
At any time before the festival, people who are participating can privately send me their mailing name and address. I'll put together a list and e-mail it back out to everyone on the Book list.

Tue, June 9, 2009 - 8:22 PMI wonder if for the first go round, if it might be better to start with just one book. . .that is less daunting of a task, and the book could be a cherished possession to be brought to faerieworld each year at the circle gathering. . .just a thought. .

Mermie - yes, of course, just adding your poetry would be lovely fine! Please folks, don't think it has to be your masterpiece work, this is just play and sharing between friends. Better to do something that will be simple (but of course beautiful) and stress free, than to worry over being "good enough" or even not playing because you think it has to be a certain level of work. -

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 11:37 AMSorry Lorenzo, forgot to respond to your comment the other day. I'm not sure if I understand what you meant. Each person will only have one book. But the whole point of it is for each person to have their own book full of artsy (or writing or photography) memories. I think I get what you're saying about one solo book, but I'm not sure that would solve any of the inherent problems that would pop up anyway and would only add the larger problem of where the book would reside most of the year. -

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 2:45 PMI like the pages idea personally. thats what im used to sending out, pages.
mum suggests maybe decorating one of those peechee folders (with the brads in em?) and putting finished pages into one of those if you arent into hand binding. ^^
how much do books/journals usually cost to send??
if we did pages we'd have to put a page size here so that everyone is uniform =D

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 3:04 PMThe only issue I am having so far is the amount of books going around at one time. I know that next year is going to be a busy time for me but I still want to participate. If I understand it correctly we each get a book and then send it off after we put our piece into it... I know if we do it right we will each have a book at the same time, but time wise how are we going to be able to get through all the books by next year?
If only one were circulating it seems that, time wise, it would be better. But logistically, I am not sure how any of this works. -

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 4:23 PMI like the pages idea! !!!
Meo, here is how it works. You gather the amount of pages that there are people involved. You then decorate one page for each person. Then you send the individual pages to the people who will be getting them, and they bind the pages to make a book, (or maybe Laume is doing that part, I'm fuzzy on that). Since everyone that is involved is making one page for each person, then each person ends up with however many pages as there are people. And from what Laume said, they can be decorated as simply or ornately as each person desires... As long as it is thoughtful and beautiful. : D
Feel free to correct me if I misunderstood anything Laume : ) ...

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 4:44 PMKylie, you wouldn't have to have uniform pages because you are going to pass out the pages for your book (or rather, bring them to FW and people will collect them from Apple's booth) and mail you back ONLY your pages, so they'll be uniform for you.
Meo - (and others) - each person having a book is doable, people do these art journal round robins all the time. But yes, it is a commitment to at least a core amount of hours. Let me address a few things.
I think I'm going to simplify things, make an organizer's unilateral decision and say we will ALL do pages. I know a book seems.... I don't know, bookier. But pages will take a lot of stress out of the process. If someone doesn't follow through people won't lose books and each of us can work at our own pace - all at once or a few at a time, to complete everyone elses pages. So DECISION #1 - bring pages, not books. Bring enough pages for each participant to have two or three sheets. People can work both sides of the page but depending on what they are doing, might only cover two or three sides. Empty sides we can use to fill in ourselves. For each person you might also want to add a "info" sheet that has information that will be helpful to the artists - your name and address, you'd like people to accommodate a 2" binding on a particular edge of each page, anything else you want to share.
So, you'll be dropping off your pages at Apple's booth the first day of the festival, and picking up pages of each participant the last day of the festival. You'll bring them all home. Assuming that about 80% of the definites follow through, and half of the question mark people, there will probably be somewhere between 12-16 players, maybe as few as 10 or as many as 20.
I'll run through a scenario or two of what you might do after that because people seem confused as to what's expected of them.
Let's follow along with four faeries - Mustardseed, Peaseblossom, Moth, and Cobweb:
Mustardseed brings all the papers home. He makes photocopies of his favorite foto of himself from the festival and glues it on a page for each person's book. He carries these around with him and when he has a few minutes to spare, he scribbles little quotes and personal messages to each person around the picures and on the back of the page. He also works on a pen and colored pencil drawing of a faery, makes quality copies of them, and glues them into another page for each person. He spends an evening watching CSI: Miami while addressing and stuffing the envelopes and mails them all out at once on the last sunny day in October.
Peaseblossom brings all her papers home. She's busy with kids starting school and whatnot and waits until fall to get started. She finds someone took a great picture of her at the festival asks if she can borrow the image. She gets copies made at Walgreen . She glues her photo in, signs her name underneath the photo, and draws a little ink sketch of a peaseblossom up the side of each page. She leaves the other side of each photo page blank. In October she finds an evening to play and paints a second page from each person's pages bright colors, playing with watercolor affects of using different brushes and water. She lets it dry. Her cats knock it all on the floor and she gathers the scattered pages up in the morning and stacks them somewhere safe where she forgets them until after the winter holiday rush. But she gets a couple more of her pages back in the mail from others in January and is inspired pull her half done work out to finish. She spends another evening stamping the watercolored pages with swirls and stars, adds some glitter, and glues a pressed flower or two she's been saving (and her cats didn't find) ever since the festival. She also cuts pretty ribbons and sends them as bookmarkers. She's short on cash so she sends a few pages out each week over a couple of months.
Cobweb brings her papers home and is excited to get right to work. She's been cutting out all sorts of beautiful images from old magazines and glues fae collages together onto the pages. She listens to FW music while spreading everything out and making a mess of the kitchen table for a week, working on it here and there. Meanwhile the family eats on the couch in front of the television. She doesn't do separate page with her photo, instead working a photo of herself into one of the pages she does for each person. She does two pages so they can be bound together as a two page spread, leaving the backs of the pages blank. She writes little messages and song lyrics around the edges of the collage pages. Each one turns out slightly different but they all have a sort of elemental look of different faery environments. Some of her COMFy friends live nearby so she keeps those pages to hand out when she sees them next, the rest she mails out the first week in September, making all the other faeries feel guilty and worried they haven't even STARTED their pages yet!
Moth doesn't do a photo page with his papers. He draws each person a stylized picture of a moth and signs his name as if the moth's wings are blowing it away. Over the course of the next two seasons he makes another little sketch on another page for each person, each one is unique, as he's inspired for that individual. For one person he draws a full moon in the corner and copies a favorite poem into the page. Another person gets a painting of what looks like a bottle of mead and a story that begins "Remember the night we...." (I won't tell the whole story, as it's a wee bit embarrassing and I'm not sure if he would want me to share it with everyone). A third person inspires him to draw a rather complex ring of dancing faery children. A fourth gets a picture of a satyr dressed as a pirate. (Don't ask) As he finishes each picture he mails each set of pages out separately, the first one going out in September and the last person getting his in April.
Does that give folks a better idea of what this is all about? And of course what you plan to do might be similar to one of the above scenarios or something else entirely!
When all your pages are returned, then you can put the pages together in a school notebook, frame them, or bind them together to make a true art book. -

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 7:09 PMI am sorry if I wasn't clear. . .I was suggesting that we start small for the first project. . .some projects start really big and then they can't be completed with quality.
so if each of us sends out pages or books, that's a lot of work to be completed for each of us. . .and if it is to be quality work, it will take a long time. . .and we all have other stuff to do.
That is why i was suggesting that we only produce one book for the first project, by each only doing one page or two pages, then a coordinator receives them and puts them in a book, which is shared at faerieworld.
if that goes smoothly, then i would say work on the large amount of work that would result in a book for everyone. . -

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 9:37 PMi love this idea, but when i realized the number of people who also love this idea. . .that's a lot of work. having one book that is completed by all and shared by all, is more practical. . .and it could be added to each year at faerieworld. . .or if it proves to be easy enough then after the first book it could escalate and lots of books could blossom. . .my plate is just a little too full for the maximum plan. .
but maybe its just me! -

Thu, June 11, 2009 - 10:15 PMSorry Lorenzo but I like the original idea better. I want my own book...lol.
Of course...being the mamamoderator here I realize that that would make me the caretaker/owner of the single book idea...so either way id have a book...

I suspect there won't be as many follow through participants as have signed up, that's the usual way things go. But I want to reiterate that there's a lot of flexibility in how much time you spend, as long as love and care and a wee bit of faery magic goes into your efforts. But it's good to know your own limits. Perhaps you can play with just a few folks who'd like to do so with you or, there's no reason you can't organize a single book idea of some kind parallel to the round robin. I wouldn't have a single problem with you organizing something like that as well. Or, maybe simplify your idea and just have a ..... oh, what do you call one of those .... a visitor's book. Something for folks to sign somewhere at the festival. Or if you don't want to do that, maybe that's a good idea for the organizers to consider. (is there already something like that already?) Y'know, like a guest book at a wedding or an event. Anyway, lots of different ways you could go with your idea Lorenzo - either this year or maybe planned for the next. Plenty of room for ideas with this creative crowd!
And don't worry folks if you haven't kept up with this thread and are feeling confused. I'll post a last minute guidelines for everyone who's playing to read right before the festival.

Fri, June 12, 2009 - 11:52 AM*smiles*
this sounds wonderful!!!!
although, im not raising my hand in full interest just yet.
as far as a group for this...tribe makes sense, or even facebook at this point since we all seem to be on there now as well as here???? or there is google/gmail depending on how many people are on there, although, you dont have to be a gmail email user i believe to be part of a group/chat there..... some friends did that for their burning man camp group......
i know i tend to float in and out, being more promiment within the few months before FW, but i am trying to be good about being on here a bit more.......
as for other artistic ideas, local flora/fauna dried?? pics of magikal places or faerie sightings????

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Fri, June 12, 2009 - 2:35 PMI think I will have to drop out because after thinking about it, the amount of work is just too much. . .my plate is very full right now. But the best of luck and I hope I can get to see books at next year's faerieworld. .
-
Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Fri, June 12, 2009 - 2:44 PMYeah i think im with the original idea too, i want my own book with pages made for me and to make personal pages for each person. i mean if we pick up the pages of each person partispating at FW, we can have the whole year to finish as we only have to send that to the end owner right. if someone cant do a dozen or so pages in a year then maybe that person should then think of just contributing to the group book.
i dont mind taking part in one group book for FW of some kind too, but that i would say is a whole other idea from the first. -
-
Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Fri, June 12, 2009 - 3:05 PMso let me get this.... taking part, A B C and D
at FW A drops off 3 blank pages (one each for B C and D to take home)
at FW B drops off 3 blank pages (one each for A C and D to take home)
at FW C drops off 3 blank pages (one each for A B and D to take home)
at FW D drops off 3 blank pages (one each for A B and C to take home)
they take whatever time they need to complete each page then mail them to their owner (before next FW of course)
at home A takes the 3 pages completed and mailed back by B C and D into his/her own wonderful and special book by next years FW and brings it with them to show off to everyone during the festivities.
did i get that right????
I LOVE this idea and think its the easiest way to round robin... a round faerie?..... it'll be easy for one taking part to just get two sheets of card stock for for each partisipant, if we have 30 playing, that would be 58 sheets of paper.
ezy pezy :) -

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 6:48 PMThis sounds really interesting! I love the idea of Faerieworlds yearbooks. The idea of everyone making a few pages for each person is great. I am only confused on why we need to bring blank pages for everyone to pick up? Wouldn't it be easier to get pages as we go? Instead of having a bunch of sheets that are easy to lose? I am a notorious loser of anything and everything lol. Also, what kind of pages are we talking about here? Plain white computer paper or scrapbooking sheets? Would like to know before I commit, although my interest is definitely piqued. -

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 9:51 AMYes it is definitely time to update the list of players and reclarify how the whole thing works.
My understanding is that each paticipant drops off enough pages at Katie's (I THINK) boothe for each of the other players to have a few to work with. At the end of the fest, each person picks up some pages from each of the other participants, takes them home and works on them, creating special memory pages for all their friends :D :D I think the idea was to return the pages to each other at the next festie, but I was thinking we could mail them to each other too... Like the great art swap of... 06? 07? Anyway.... When you recieve all of your pages back, full of joy and magick, you bind them in to a book yourself.
Jake and I are definitely in!!!! So add us to the yes list :D We will be doing one book together. -

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 10:37 AMHey there Whisperfae, a few clarifications as I understand it, though I could be wrong so correct me if I am, first, pages will be dropped off at Apple's booth I think? not sure but I think it was Apple. And as far as I know the plan is to mail them, not wait till the next fest.. but that is just what I read from the posts so could be wrong -

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 11:46 AMYes! It IS Apple's boothe! Sorry Katie, and Apple!

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 2:47 PMI made the unilteral decision to do pages instead of books because it would simply be easier and cheaper to keep track of and that way no one risks losing a book to it sitting in someone's to-do pile for years. We are dropping off pages at Apple's booth on the first day. I'd like people to drop off pages instead of just suggesting people buy pages because then we have the freedom to choose our own size and type. Maybe some will want to use fancy scrapbook paper or make homemade paper or use big or small paper or even unusually shaped paper. Whatever we want. We will all drop off enough for every participant to take home 3 pages plus any written instructions/info we'd like people to have (for instance you might want to warn people you will be putting your book together on the top instead of the traditional left hand side, so they can leave an inch of empty space or you might want to do a small "about myself' to help people who might not know you as well. Also include mailing name and address). Everyone will then pick up the pages/info for each participant on the last day of the festival and bring them home. Deadline for doing all the pages and mailing or returning them to their original faery participants will be.... let's say May Day of next year, so everyone can have time to get their books made by next year's FW. Is that sound like a good date? Anyone have any comments on it? -
-
Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 8:15 PMMine will either be EARLY or LATE. lol We will be out of the country on May 1st. Just as an FYI! And I need an instructional page for each person? Ok I am getting it. I feel like the heat has now zapped my brain cells.

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 2:57 PMMeo - you bring whatever paper you want your final book to be (or however you want to put your pages together, if at all). Anything goes - although you might have trouble getting folks to agree to fill in 2'X3" pages or pages made out of fragile leaves. Hehe. Bring enough for 3 sheets per participant. You can write your name on them if you want, although you will also be including an info sheet per person (make one and photocopy it folks). But it might be a good idea to write your name on your sheets - it will probably get covered up, but it will help if folks drop them or mix them up. You don't do anything to the sheets until you get everyone elses pages.
Oh, and just thought of something - make sure you keep three of your own pages for your own work to be included in your book. -
-
Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 3:02 PMI meant to type 2'X3' pages. LOL - 2'X3" would be a very unusual book indeed!

Sat, July 4, 2009 - 4:24 PMIm sorry...I forget exactly what I need to bring...and whoevers getting a page from me...apologies in advance for how long it takes...I have a big project when I get back and (hopefully) will be in a play *Hear that universe?!*
Oh...and will we know whos pages we are doing? How?

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 6:17 PMMermie - read back the last few responses I added and that should answer your questions. You have until May 1, 2010 to finish and mail everything back to everyone. You don't HAVE to take that long, but you can if you need to space things out. And you bring 3 sheets plus an info sheet (mailing name and address, any other info you want to add) for each participant. So let's say there's 20 players (there's 17 definites at the moment), you'd bring 20 sets of 3 sheets plus info. -

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 7:58 PMI hate to say this but I think I'm gonna have to bow out. Moving and other issues would cause the books to maybe get lost and I don't want that.

-
Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 10:28 PMI am going to bow out. I am looking at my calendar and it looks insane . I am not going to be able to put the time into this the way I would want. I don't want to flake out midway. Too much stuff coming up. Sorry.

Re: Faerie Book Round Robin
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 10:07 AMTime for the folks on the fence to say yay or nay - so from what I can see, that's Air, Trouble, Kristin, Megan and Lyra. Also, if you want to play and you haven't spoken up yet, or you want to drop and you haven't let us kow yet, chime in. We'll need a final count for pages.
For now, there are sixteen players (counting Whisper and Jake as one). So that would mean bringing fifteen sets that include three blank pages and a page of instructions with your mailing name and address, because the 16th person is yourself. You could bring 2 or3 extra sets if you want for any late additions.
With all the excitement, packing, sewing, listmaking, travel, etc., don't stress over the round robin. All that's required of you now is to bring the sets, drop them off at Apple's booth, and remember to pick up a set of everyone's pages on the last day of the festival. That's all you need to remember to do until you're back to the mundane world, homesick for your faerie home, and you'll have the FW round robin waiting to provide a little art therapy.

Wed, July 29, 2009 - 12:56 PMFinal Count - Final Reminder!
Here are the final players below. (I'll know if Lisa wants to play by tonight but wanted to get this up now, and Lyra could easily jump in later i she wanted)
Fifteen players (plus two maybes) so-
Bring at least fifteen (or add a few more sets if you want) sets of paper. Each set will have three sheets of paper you want people to use for YOUR book. Each set will also have a note with your mailing name and address and any other info you'd like to add to help out the other players. Paper clipping each set together would be a nice thing to do.
Drop your sets off at Apple's booth (The Gilded Quill, right?) the first day of the festival.
Pick up a set from each person on the last day of the festival and bring them home.
That's all you have to do before the festival. See everyone soon!
