Skandar's Supplemental Sounds V.7

In an age where production software like Ableton Live turns anybody with a laptop into a “live electronica” act, a few highly motivated artists take it to the next level with a truly “live” show. Grayarea - consisting of production trio Nosmo, McRae, and Ruin – are classically trained musicians who aren’t satisfied with simply clicking a laptop mouse or twisting the same few knobs on a midi controller. Utilizing computers and synthesizers along with live guitar, bass, and drums these guys raced their way atop the dance music scene, touring globally by 2003 after just two years of producing together. This set of all-original tracks & remixes from the same year still stands out as a stellar performance, even more impressive by the fact that’s it’s all live and comes across as a cohesive and continuous whole across multiple moods and multiple genres including house, breaks, progressive, and rock.

In the world of “chillout” you won’t find many bigger names or more impressive selectors than Jazzanova and Richard Dorfmeister (often mentioned in the same sentence as Thievery Corporation and Gilles Peterson). Berlin’s Jazzanova began as a DJ team in 1995 and began producing in 1996, with releases spanning across downtempo, nu-jazz, and house. Vienna, Austria’s Dorfmeister (of Kruder & Dorfmeister fame) has been releasing vinyl since 1993 and is perhaps THE pre-eminent chillout DJ on earth. This DJ set of features members of the Jazzanova collective and Dorfmeister doing the housey side of things – starting out with heavy dub reggae influences and morphing into mellow jazzy elements.
