We welcome musicians, too. Hope to see you there.
Let's dance the night away! Come explore and express the joy of your own movement at Klein Dance Studio's Open Movement / Dance Jam.

This open-to-everyone event will take place Friday, May 29 from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. For those who would like a little extra instruction, an "Introduction to Movement Improvisation" class taught by a Klein Dance instructor will be offered at 7:30 pm.

All are welcome! No previous dance experience is needed. Just wear clothes that are easy to move in and comfortable. Bare feet or socks are best. Suggested donation for the event is $5-$10. Klein Dance Studio is located at 811 Lake Avenue in downtown Lake Worth. Call 702-1286 for more information

5)Meeting the Challenges of Our Times: A Continuum Class Intensive with Gael Ohlgren
Description: Continuum is a movement and awareness modality for self care and healing. It is based on the knowledge that our organism has a wisdom of its own that resides in a realm that is neither of our culture, gender, and time, nor of the expression of our persona. In order to hear this primordial wisdom we must attend to the body's language of sensation and movement.

The two questions that Continuum poses are: 1) What can I feel if I listen to sensation in more detail? and 2) What movement possibilities do I have beyond the utilitarian and patterned movements of daily survival?

Continuum classes utilize scientific maps, creative imagination, breath, sound, and movement explorations in order to enhance sensation and to stimulate the body's own movement impulses. Our movements tend to seek the shapes and rhythms of nature; the curls, spirals, waves and arcs of wind and water and tempos slower than our electronic and mechanical devices. These spontaneous and unplanned expressions melt the sense of separateness between self and biosphere bringing a stronger resonance with all forms of life.

Sound and movement soothe our nervous system, providing nourishment to all systems. Through this work we are brought to places of profound refuge and grounding, of luxurious sensuousness and adventure, and to points of attentive stillness from which we may set off into deeper meditative and healing spheres.

These self paced and pleasurable explorations can be practiced when without equipment or specific health and fitness requirements. The purpose of a class intensive is to build a momentum over these four days as well as finding the integration of this practice into everyday routines.
There are many other ways to describe "contact improvisation"-
a moving meditation
body surfing
art sport
improvised dance
experiential physics

...well simply, it's a lot of fun!

Collin Leach is a massage bodywork practitioner that rekindled his passion for contact improvisation in 2005 after traveling to northern California where CI is popular. He trained extensively with Karl Frost in addition to some exciting art performance projects under Karl's direction- "Axolotl" (2005), Contact Camp at the Burning Man art festival (2005-2007), and "Proximity" (2007). While traveling to and from California he helped promote CI in Miami with Ileigh Reynolds and Elska Zeidle (2006-7). His practice of CI has further deepened with several stays in Germany and travels across the USA.

Performance artist Becky Flowers will be participating and interweaving exercises from experimental theater into this special class.

Time: Saturday Feb.14, 2:30- 4:30pm with the option of staying later for further explorations with Becky

5445 Collins Ave. CU-18 Lower Lobby

Cost: Donation to studio

How Karl
no nancy lately, though this past summer had an odd serendipity as we encountered each other in 4 different locals across the continent.
I've assuaged my desires for Contact by teaching it myself (and to myself) here in miami. Coincidentally other local dance and performance improvisers have been providing opportunities to gather too, ya ya ya!

One of them- Becky Flowers is seeking to create an ensemble of Interventionist performers.
She seemed quite intrigued with an old idea i had for a kind of 'cirque of communication'. Audience would choose various booths or areas to engage in a particular form of intentional communication e.g. verbal mirroring et al, witnessing, tactile mirroring... she introduced us to material from "theater of the oppressed", that would totally work.
Also using recording technology, like other projects you may know to get peoples stories or views captured. Yet with an emphasis on reviewing the recording as self observation or from a second and third person perspective.
I probably wont go on this cirque concept but like the idea.

Epistemology in how people relate seems to hold an endless fascination for me. In CI for instance ive been impressed that within this sensation based form people can still seem to be oblivious to what they or the other are doing. Ive posed the question to teachers, like nancy, 'how do we know what we are actually doing?'' "Practice" is the response i usually hear. Of course, but apparently this may not be enough to deliver oneself from habits or ignorance. I imagine that an epistemological practice is relevant to evolve from the mere feeling of knowing, to the completely different form of knowing based upon astute observations, that are yet still questionable.
The exercise of observational skills i imagine provides far greater potential, for modulating perception, or to reinterpret the understanding of sensation. As in still life painting to abstract painting, from capturing what the eye actually sees to conveying what the mind imagines of it.

Ive been wondering Karl, in practicing CI with its emphasis on observation of sensation and how we choose to respond, where does it affect the way we relate.
Does movement or our choice of movement utterly reveal are inner character. How does awareness of sensation and responses translate to other forms of communication and perception of others.
Example- some one leaning their weight or comfortably manipulating an object yet is at a loss to do the same with a person.
Indeed im wondering, with the rest of you, about CI technique and how its practice may or not translate into the social manifestations of the CI community and individual psychology.

Dont let the academic language fool you as this was a cool conference-
http://www.fau.edu/bodymindculture/Bodies_in_Motion.php

I enquired about other such events and i was told that France and Poland seem to have them more frequently than in the USA.
Seen paxtons new dvd, cooool ya ya!

how was Nancy's workhsop? hope it was fabulous... knew some great people
going there.

fun projects lined up for the next months... starting to think again about
doing a new performance work. Will be redoing an old piece in St
Petersberg in May (Place) and will be doing a laboratory towards a new work
in Kharkov in early June... a bit of a lighter piece in some ways ...
interaction more structured and also having stage performance sections...
very excited about it!

best to you

Yo u,
the term "flying" is often used to describe different forms of
acro-balancing; acroyoga, acro-sage, sky yoga, contact yoga,
prana-sage, inversion therapy, gravity massage, etc., etc.. Besides
Karl, Elske knows some basic skills and knows of some Berlin acrobats
that practice acro-balancing. What is different about my approach is i
encourage the flyer to be completely passive, which is quite difficult
for most people. That's because the form feels inherently risky or the
flyer is compelled to explore activity. There is often a feeling in
the flyer that they are falling and this causes the flyers body to
react in various ways. People are easy to fly that understand how to
consistently do nothing (draping) or can hold their body in a solid
shape (isometric contraction). When the flyer can coordinate both
qualities throughout their body the base should know how to recognize
this to efficiently manipulate and balance their structure. This is
the basic level of the form.

The principles you learn in Contact Improv apply. Acrobalancing can be
explored as a specialized form of CI. Yet only one partner of the trio
is exploring travel through space. I use the term trio to introduce
the idea of the earth as being the primary base. The intermediary or
the person in the middle is of course dynamically pouring their weight
into the earth through (small) rolling points of contact on their
back. Because the middle person is now sharing the center of gravity
with the flyer their stability has become variable, or dynamically
stable. So the secondary base is always having a kind of horizontal
'small dance' with the earth. To put it another way the intermediary
is also slightly off balance and is observing; responding to the
momentum of the the rolling points between their self and the
supporting surface.

The 5 dynamics of contact are there between the secondary base and the
flyer- rolling point, bridging (multiple connected points), sliding,
pivoting, and the static contact point that travels through space.
If the flyer is active its nice if they have an understanding for
efficiency of movement. Having a sense of the two principles of
engaging in contact- pouring or placement of weight and the use of
muscle force (push; pull) are essential. The flyer may recognize their
relationship to both base supports as distinct. The flyer shares the
mass of their weight with the primary base (the earth). Whether the
flyer is placing, pouring, or pushing their mass it will be most
efficiently done in towards the earth through the skeletal structure
of the intermediary. In other words the flyer is seeking to interact
with the earth or the primary supporting surfaces through the body of
their partner.
Imagine CI in deep water. We can only maintain a dynamic engagement by
using the second principle of contact- muscular force, that of push
and pull. Without the primary base the first principle of contact-
weight sharing, becomes irrelevant.
This push; pull practice may provide you a sense of the relationship
between the intermediary and flyer.

Counter balance is a synergy of both the principles of weight
placement and muscular interaction. It can allow the mass of weight to
be suspended further away from the intermediary. This takes skill. Two
people coming together to share a common center of gravity through
dynamic movement, as in CI is a fascinating challenge that takes
practice. Counter balance seems to be less explored perhaps because
moving weight at a distance demands efficiency of muscular
coordination and balance.

Here are some fun refinement practices that may help besides doing
classical CI or actually flying: Explore all 5 dynamics of contact in
deep water with someone. Also try them on supportive structures such
as trees, hand rails, jungle gyms, ropes, etc., etc. Again in deep
water by yourself try moving or balancing by utilizing your core
muscles only, then add use of arms and legs to push and pull the
water. Using flotation devices on arms or legs, again try balancing
into different positions. And of course there's exploration of
balancing on a ball or two. Experiment with balancing on one leg
dynamically. Move and balance on hands, feet, knees, head, and elbows.
Control of pelvic rotation is essential for the base to practice. Lie
on your back. Flatten the belly, bringing the navel towards the spine.
Bring bent knees up and explore moving them with control. Then
progress to do this with straight legs.
Object manipulation- fly things, bags of stuff, happy dogs, etc.
Try teaching what you discover to others. Along with actual practice
teaching is an excellent way to learn.

These activities will help you gather perspectives of the physics that
will translate into both a physical and intellectual understanding of
basing and flying.

There is alot to write about this subject. Lets see if this e-mail
makes sense to you, then i'll continue further.
I've also provided another perspective at this site-

At first, the class will focus on centering and awareness: We will look for the true internal source and the authentic external expression of our own dance. We will then investigate attentively the texture of our connection with our partner through listening to their and again our actions and reactions within the ongoing dance. During this, we will be able to fully enjoy participating in the dance, because our and our partner's contributing to it will be generous and full-hearted, since it is at all times nurtured from within. And so, finally, we will feel union and satisfaction while dancing with our partner, because we’ll not only be experiencing the freedom of space and the excitement of momentum in the dynamic dance, but also the heightened support we get from dancing in communication with our center and another person's center.

Heya Clarence,
appy pollie loggies for not getting back sooner. FDEO looks exciting, you're awesome! I wish to attend a variety of the classes as my schedule may allow. I have not been facilitating CI classes lately. My focus is still on relocating. I had hoped to help promote CI here, with the inclination that an appreciation for this form would ignite more group endeavors. There seems to be genuine enthusiasm observable after the classes I've taught and all. Yet no serious follow up, that is unless i offer only occasional workshops rather than ongoing exploration and development. Here it seems people want to experience CI and perhaps borrow from its technical aspects for novelty or for utilization towards other disciplines. So given time there may be more of a community formation. Or perhaps with the right constellation of location and charismatic forces things would catalyzes sooner. I've been hearing lack of commitment here in Miami with other deserving forms such as AcroYoga and Gyrokinesis.

There has been ambivalence creeping within me, related to some social aspects of the CI community. Here in South Florida there are a number of social variables that don't allow easy cohesion- the lack of compelling magnetism and friction between individuals. The appreciation for this art form hasn't piqued enough to bind people towards the greater goal, like yoga or bellydance communities here.

I've been curious and leaning towards an optimism that CI may have a strong correlation towards 'conscience communication'. For instance the observational skills and the modulation of perception often practiced in CI would also promote a parallel with communication skills and empathizing. I imagine that 'open minded' persons or people that may imagine themselves as such can also be easily appreciative of CI. And how much does the practice of CI within its community inspire 'open mindedness', mmmm, hmmm...?
I've heard a number of stories about 'politics' and power struggles within the CI community that contrast my optimism.
The seemingly egalitarian nature in the CI community has been outreaching. There is ongoing work with the blind and people with a wide range of physical aptitudes. And sometimes not, as what Karl Frost noticed about the Israeli CI community being insular to the pertinent concerns of Palestinians. The CI jams were another place where 'conscience people' could gather in an egalitarian setting but 'check out' from real social concerns.

CI is not an NGO of course, but the practice intrinsic within this form suggest 'responsivity', observation, self awareness, active listening and empathy. And many people I've met in CI seem to be Liberal, even activist.

To glean some answers to our questions I had get into my storage and sift through my Contact Improv references. There has been questions raised within the CI community, being still predominantly white, well educated middle class (it seems fairly balanced between the sexes, from my perspective, except here in South Florida). And to my knowledge there is one article specific to this regard of race, but i have as yet to obtain it. But perhaps I'm missing the relative material. There has been recognition that the genre is arriving within of the confluence of numerous disciplines including Eurocentric, Africanesque, and Asian movement forms.

An interesting response to this question which i imagine is representative for many was that the CI community is open though not necessarily asserting invitations.

To answer your other questions, yes i believe Stephen Yoshen is a well regarded founder of Earthdance.
Its quite unlikely i understand but if you wish me to offer a class impromptu at FDEO its possible for me, and i don't seek compensation.
wow collin,
i am astounded to hear that out of 300 there were only 3 black males at the
celebration ... is earthdance the place that steven yoshen built? i rehearsed
there one weekend when i worked with david hurwith ... steven and david were
good friends. what is it about this dance genre that does not attract african
americans? fascinating discussion that i'd like to understand. it would be
interesting to know specific demographics of the ci community ... what their
backgrounds are ... socio-economic, racial/ethnic, education, etc. there must
be a way to ferret out an answer to this conundrum.
clarence

Yaya Clarence,
i and one other have posted some videos on YouTube, just enter ci36. There is
currently a lack of the informational events. That is, most of whats available
to view are people jamming and some of the performances on the CI36 home site in
the community section.

It didn't really hit me how important this was. This was only the second such
event in CI history. And the material that has and continues to be generated is
exciting. I feel very fortunate to have participated in the genesis of an art
form that i imagine may be enduring and beneficial as Tai Chi or Yoga et al.

Two of the primary developers of the form Steve and Nancy i find to be
compelling personalities. They have maintained that CI would not be as rich,
variable if it were not an open source form. And people continue to develop CI
without codifying or trademarking it. In my experience its a rare example of an
international community that functions in a kind of anarchy and is seems
actually better because of it!

There are a number of things about the CI community that i wish to understand
better. There were well over 300 people at CI36. I also attended an
"international" satellite event at Earthdance, a CI hub. There were only 3 black
males at CI36, just myself at Earthdance.

Its uncommon for me to see dark skin in CI. Since posting the videos on
YouTube they have only been watched apparently by the regions of the world that
were predominate- europe, the americas, asia.
At the moment i find this interesting. I've yet to find what this means as i
discover more aspects of the ci community.

It was fantastic and intense for myself. Though ive not had much dialog these
past weeks on others reflections. I think the consensus is it was difficult in
many ways, but it happened, quite happily! What i'm very curious to see is what
it has fertilized.

CONTACT IMPROVISATION

A partnered dance form that relies on improvised movements and

points of contact. Participants should have an eagerness for physicality

and the childlike curiosity for spontaneous play. CI is an improvisational

duet form of dance that explores partnering on many levels including

weight-sharing, counter balancing, momentum, and stillness. Exploration

of the head-tail connection will help participants find ease of movement

and support through efficient use of the skeleton while investigating

ways to awaken our senses for instantaneous response to the dance.
A release-based modern dance technique class with focus towards

deepening an understanding of our bodies as "moving instruments."

Expansive floor work, improvisation, lengthening standing exercises, and

space-eating phrase work help support the dancer in her/his exploration

of kinetic imagery/awareness and freedom of movement.

Improvisational structures are used to achieve physical objectives and
Ralf Jaroschinski was born in Southern Germany and grew up in Rio de
Lower Saxonian National Ballet of Hannover, Northern Germany, and worked
Company. Jaroschinski then worked as a freelance choreographer and teacher of
contemporary dance techniques in Germany and Austria, teaching CI mainly
to dancers at first. In 1998, he became the German Hildesheim City
Theater Dance Company's artistic director and choreographer and directed
the 12 dancers until July of 2002. Back in a freelance situation, he
currently teaches contemporary dance techniques and CI throughout Europe
and the Americas and choreographs for various dance companies by
commission. He also produces his own work mainly in Hannover, Germany,
3rd class was actually two separate one on one classes. Basically a composite of previous classes investigating the 'small dance' through shared weight, proprioceptive projection, inhibiting reaction through passive manipulation, playing with get over or under the other, allowing for efficiency of effort in a counterbalance and falling and catching without panicking.

Aprox. 1 and a quarter hours.
We started class by me dancing with each student to assess what would be the focus for this session.

1) Developing rolling point rather than sliding and bridging.
Among other things i noticed it seemed students were not following through with the rolling point. So there was a dependence on sliding and bridging over the partner to keep the dance moving.
I introduced a ball to roll between themselves and their partner. Suggesting that they could follow its rolling point randomly or try to get it to a specific area or move the ball together through the room and play with speed and pressure.
Moving the ball together through space was also a way to help us to learn how to leave 'something behind' for the other person to keep connected with.

Feedback and sharing moment.

2) Offering and receiving support.
One student stated she had issues with giving her full weight. We watched how each would take full weight from a partner in a standing position. Then worked further on this by me coaching through each step of how to get under a partner so as to comfortably scoop them up from a standing position. First feeling for full contact of partners back or front side. Lifter slides down to get their hips under the others hips and waits for their weight. As the lifter feels the full weight from their partner they begin pushing their hips back while extending a little in the knees so as to scoop upwards with their pelvis. Lifter remembers to keep their back in exstention for the others comfort and to prevent them from sliding off.
It is difficult for beginners to remember all these steps. I chose to work on the process rather than the goal of getting some one supported in the air. That meant that sometimes only the third step was reached- keeping full contact all the way before the act of lifting.
I reminded students to listen and respect their partners learning edge. Often even a simple endeavor can be interesting if your also aware and responding to the others reactions. The dance is in the connection and listening and not just the techniques.

3) Over and under
Having partners look for opportunities to either get under or over the other to share weight. Its easy for this game to become slightly frantic. I encouraged them to take pauses. To allow the joy of feeling support or the others weight. For the supported to relax completely. For the supporter to play and move the others body in a way that felt interesting and good for the lifter. Because what feels good for the active one is reciprocal.
Having the lifter place the other in a way that they can easily begin to stabilize and immediately take weight. Land, stabilize into mutual support and proceed.

Feedback and sharing.

Contact Improvisation gathering at: 420 W. Rivo Alto Dr., Miami 33139
(Venitian Isles)

When: 12:00 pm-2:00pm Thursday Feb.7

Collin 305 323 4731

Yaya ya all,
thanks for coming to our first explorations of CI together. Even if
you did not participate in the 1st gathering your welcome to the
next. Because we are working at a basic level i imagine the
instruction will remain open for people to drop in until later notice.
Some people were not able to get in the gate at Marsha's. We don't
understand why but i shall have my phone ready, even for you late
comers. Marsha's shall additionally have some one keeping an eye out
to let you in.

After introductions i stated my passion for facilitating CI
classes. For myself it is essentially fulfilling for my body, mind
and sense of community. I am often awe struck at how the practice of
CI parallels other areas of life and nature. So i am simply impressed
to share this and to wish others may as well.
I also encouraged feedback and expression from all participants.
We all have things to share within the context here and i wish to
shape my instruction in a way that engages us all as much as possible.

While taking questions i offered my basic understanding of CI as an
evolving form of these principles: A movement practice of self
awareness in dynamic relation to the other, through improvised weight
sharing, inertia, rolling point, guided momentum and mutual
engagement. CI emphasises efficiency and self responsibility. In CI
we can maintain autonomy and interdependence simultaneously. It is a
balancing on the edges of the known and unknown. A moving meditation.
And delightfully it remains uncodified yet distinct.
"Finding our animals" refers to accessing the hind brain or
primitive brain for complex fluid movement, as opposed to movements
initiated more from the frontal cortex that are analytically driven,
specific and simple by comparison. I believe the synergy of
crystallized (memorized skill) and fluid (improvised skill) capacity
in CI is ideal.
Below was the 1st improvised 1 hour class. I offer this for those
impressed to share or remember and glean further insights.

1)Developing the skills to let go (inhibiting tonus), and refine
proprioception (3D body awareness).
We formed a circle on the floor with our heads toward the center.
Moving our internal awareness through out the body to notice and
release areas that may be gripping. Sensing our relationship between
the tissues of our body, gravity and the floor we lay upon. Getting
of the letting our voices express our humanity.

2)Shaking up and down on our backs.
Beginning with dorsiflexion (toes to head) then plantarflexion
(toes pointed) we introduced rocking in the coronal plane via
pulsations through the heels.

3)Hip circles.
Mapping the topography of the posterior sacrum through the bodies
own weight on the floor. Lifting hips toward the four quadrants as to
feel and develop our relationship to the pelvis and sacrum in
particular. Then further explorations into spirals, circle size and
speed to feel and mobilize the sacrum.

4)Rock'n'Roll control, gravity surfing.
Finding efficiency in rolling side to side. Exploring the
contrasts of rolling with complete control or falling into a flop
(little control), then finding our middle way- a guided fall,
following the momentum through a spiral to belly and back.

5) Curious manipulations, watching the other helping us to let it
(tonus) go.
Now half the class was off the floor manipulating the others
through passive range of motion. The emphasis was to find in the
receivers areas of holding then stopping there so as they may find a
way to release or control their reflexes. Encouraging feedback, and
to work within the partners boundaries. I wanted to make clear that
most of the exercises and indeed Contact Improv itself is process
oriented. The perfection of exercises not being the goal, emphasizing
skills just as a means into connection. We explored spiraling
rotations of the receiver into pivot points. At these precarious
balance points where the receiver may fall forward or back are areas
of special interest in learning to inhibit their reflexes.
Here also was a nice opportunity to have receivers refocus their
perception. Feeling the variety of sensations as being simply
sensation, uncoupled from the usual meaning, as in labeling them
good, bad, painful so on. To just simply feel, without habitual
reactions to change, or to prevent change.

Partner feedback; sharing.

6)Sharing sense ability through pressure.
Still rotating half the class on the floor. We began sharing the
sense of compression. The active partner delivered at first through
their hands, they later improvised weight brought via other areas of
their bodies. Encouraging the active person to organize themselves to
use less muscle and more bones in offering weight. To sense beyond
the point of contact as far as possible through the receivers
structure and further again into the floor.
Receivers were reminded not to check out but to also sense the
organization of the others structure. Noting the active partners
choices of delivering weight- structurally (hands, knees, belly,
hips, feet, or compression through muscular effort instead of bone
alignment). Additionally noting what may be internally driving the
quality of the approach (timid, assertive, confident, sensitive,
playful, slow, bold, symmetry, etc., etc.).

7)Ending circle with sharing and foot massage.
The consensus was very positive. This seemed to be a refreshing
novel experience for us. We spoke of expanding to other locations and
times.
Yet one person had concerns about stress on their sacrum. As in the
beginning we were on a bare marble floor we subsequently continued
the class on cozy sheep skins. Sacral discomfort may potentially be a
minor issue for beginners doing floor work. Perhaps the oft used knee
pads in CI can additionally be paired with hip padding. I shared that
in the beginning as i was learning Contact that i had issues with my
sacrum. This took at least several weeks to adapt at the rate of one
jam/class per week. Yet now both my knees and sacrum are well adapted
to hard surfaces without side effects, cool.

I wish for students to learn an analytical and intuitive
understanding of CI. This is reflected in my instruction as i may
present objective and subjective statements or inquiries and encourage we share the same amongst ourselves.
Classes are free for those serious about learning.
How exciting it will be as we help one another refine our appreciation of kinesiology; anatomy, internal evocations, and the poetry of this art.

Keep'n'contact,
a workshop can happen upon demand. Relay to me when is good and for what duration. Currently my schedule is quite open though i prefer weekdays and late mornings to late afternoons. I'll suggest this to the class this Thursday to which you are welcome. So as for myself i would appreciate filling up the week with CI and related endeavors, having others equally commited is what is needed.
Instruction is free for those commited to developing in CI.

At the moment students are at the beginning level. I imagine my instruction would be of interest to anyone with less than several hundred hours of CI. For those with more than that it would be better to create a 'lab' structure of exploratory investigations.

My approach and intention is to spread CI and instigate a community so offer your ideas and resources i.e. practice space, insights, feedback.
Atlantic University. Over the summer I had the opportunity to take a
contact workshop in Berlin and I fell in love with it! I am always
looking for workshops in my area I will drive, distance is not a
problem. If you could let me know if there are any workshops comming up
anytime soon I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you,

Yeah yahoos to ya all,
finally i am back and ready to begin facilitating instruction in Contact Improv et al.
The initial meeting is to be at my friend Marsha Egolzi's residence. We shall get a feel for our commitment to learn the technique together. Practice will likely be short, perhaps 1 1/2 hours so we can work out logistics- how often do we practice, how long, where, etc., etc.
Developmental classes may likely happen in the late mornings or afternoons.

This meeting shall be open to anyone who is curious. From there i shall form classes based on skill level and student commitment.
Classes for those who are serious about learning shall be free of charge until notification otherwise.
My intention is to help propagate this phenomenal art. Thus i encourage students to come with the intention to cultivate their own enthusiasm to share.

Marsha's address is: 420 West Rivo Alto in the Venetian Islands.

Going west from SoBe, Miami Beach it's on the second isle (one traffic light after the Standard Hotel). Go north on Rivo Alto it shall curve into a U. Marsha's house is on the west side after the curve.

My current contact is 305 323 4731
Don't hesitate to come or call if you are arriving late. It's good if everyone just gets there so we can get it together.
2 performances with Karl Frost/BODY RESEARCH

July 26 August 12 in San Francisco and Santa Cruz

-----

Dance theatre artist Karl Frost and his company, BODY RESEARCH, will
be presenting two of his participatory works, the highly acclaimed
Axolotl and a new work, Proximity, in San Francisco and Santa Cruz.

Axolotl, will be presented July 26, August 9, 10, 8PM at Million
Fishes, 23rd and Bryant in San Francisco and July 28 and August 2,
8PM at The Vets Hall, 846 Front St in Santa Cruz.

Proximity, will be shown July 27, August 5, 11, 12, 8pm at 1800
Illinois St in San Francisco and July 29 and Aug 4, 8pm at 418
Project, 418 Front St. in Santa Cruz.

<http://www.bodyresearch.org/axolotl>
Frosts work stretches the boundaries of contemporary participatory
performance. His approach is unique in that it doesnt seek to
control or confine the scope of the audiences influence on the work.
Instead, the audience response becomes in integral part of the
creative process.

Both works are built on the themes of personal and social interaction
in a world of overstretched personal networks, over busy lives, and
computer immersion.

Proximity, a new work, gives the audience members the ability to
choose their distance from the core of the performances action. That
choice itself becomes part of the kinesthetic and psychological
exploration of Frosts subject matter of privacy, isolation,
relationship, attraction, closeness, and insecurity. One critic,
describing the work going into Proximity, wrote ... fascinating;
awkward, tender, and violent movement combined with snippets of
dialog and swiftly built-up characters and relationships, creating
social and sexual conflicts with an almost unnerving intimacy...
utterly compelling.

The audience experience in Axolotl is much more central and direct.
The audience members are blindfolded for the entire two hours of the
performance and invited to interact and explore with each other and
an international group of actors, dancers, and musicians questioning
the nature of meaningful experience. Critics and spectators have
called Axolotl the oddest and most surprising performance experience
they have ever had, and one of the most rewarding.

Karl Frost describes his two shows as, An opportunity to experience
the artistic exploration of the social and personal themes from
inside the investigation rather than just witnessing it from the
outside.

Performers Performers (Axolotl and Proximity): Isabelle Fortier,
Isabelle Kirouac, Sasha Klapkin (Canada), Elske Seidel (Germany),
Natalie Heller (Cyprus), Maja Paalsson (Denmark), Munir Rashid,
Deborah Bry, Kevin Dockerty, Karl Frost, Collin Leach (US), and
guests.

had a nice jam in berkeley today! A fun couple, Louise Bertelsen and Po Shu Wang mentioned they shall be passing through miami in september-november or perhaps earlier. They are interested in jamming, and are willing to facilitate a workshop for this motive really! They're teaching at the West Coast Contact Improvisation Festival- www.wccif.com this july.

www.livinglenses.com is their website, though their seems to be no reference to C.I. there, its interesting.

As of Sunday night, 25 june, i'll be deep in the woods for a month working with Karl Frost in a performance project. Hence i will be out of communique till late july.
The 3rd Contact workshop – “Effortless Falling Up 3” Facilitated by: Elska Zeidle
June 18, Monday 7 P.M.-9 P.M.
$10.00 at Excello, 8702 SW 129th Terrace, Miami, Fl. 33176

In this contact improvisation workshop we will look specifically at the falling moment,
the point of instability, the fall into the other

... and consequently the catch.

We will discover the subtlety of the partner's body in motion, developing awareness
for their shift of weight and position of their center of gravity

- in and out of contact.

We will work with questions like:

How to fall softly? How to find that perfect balance point of incredible lightness? How
to have an exciting but safe ride? How to land and continue the momentum into the
next fall? How to use the limbs to move on a partner in the air?

and

How to catch effortlessly? How to position yourself under a falling partner?
How to continue the momentum and take your partner on a ride? How to play with
weight on top of you? How to guide your partner's landing?
the last weekly class for Contact Improvisation is Saturday April 14, 3:30- 5:00 PM at Miami Contemporary Dance Center. There may be yet another class on the 21st but it seems unlikely as I am planning to leave for Europe then.

It has been over a year now of having weekly CI classes, 'jams' and workshops. Ileigh Reynolds has opened an aerial arts center and her schedule is full. I myself shall continue exploring CI, massage/bodywork, and performing arts in Germany and in the West Coast of the U.S.
Yet there shall continue to be CI events organized regularly. Be ready for that by mid June of this year people! Postings at www.tribe.net and in YAHOO GROUPS may inform you as well as offer a place for anyone to list CI related events as they are open to the public.
If anyone is willing and able to facilitate CI classes or events please contact me:
Collin Leach- 305 335 9302 or collinleachlmt@yahoo.com

I've also included a more in-depth description at the bottom of this email about what my class is focusing on. Hope to see you this Sunday...

Contact Improvisation
Techniques into Dancing
with Ileigh Reynolds

Miami Contemporary Dance Center
1919 Purdy Avenue
Miami Beach
Sundays, 4pm-6pm
Price: $10

Whether you are new to contact or a veteran looking to
refresh your dancing, you are invited to join our
weekly class that leads into open dancing.

This class deals alot with exploring physical contact as a prompting
into movement. This may be simple, like a hand directing the shoulder of another into a spiraling movement, or as complex rolling up
against gravity to fly on the shoulder of your partner.

I begin class by guiding students through structured improvisations
that shift awareness through different parts of the body, physical
sensations, movement qualities, and seek a balance between internal
and external alertness. The class builds on these initial concepts
that are explored individually and then are taken into duet or trio
forms. There is also a section of class devoted to specific 'tools'
or common ways of lifting or giving weight to another. The class
finishes with time left for 'open' dancing, where we play with all
the concepts we've explored, plus following any thing we are curious
about.

The class is open for movers at all levels of experience with a
willingness to experiment. I like to say that improvisation is a big
word that us big people use to give us permission to play. We are
basically scientists exploring physics concepts such as gravity and
momentum, and our playground is our moving bodies!

Bring your playfullness and curiosity!
It works, and Brigid Baker the administrator is delightful. Ileigh and I are proposing to start at 5 p.m. and go 2 hours or more til 7:00 or 7:30 pm Sunday April 9th. If a lot of people show and the energy is high we may possably extend that time, its a matter of covering the rental cost. Ileigh will lead the class, afterwards we'll jam. I'm covering the rental, Iliegh is offering her skills as an instructor gratis, so donations are appreciated but not expected at this time.

Yes, it's about time to get rolling here in the deep south of
Florida. Like so many others I've met who simply wanted to do
Contact Improv but had no venue, they started it themselves. Last
summer was quite a personal renaissance with extraordinary
experiences for me on the West Coast. I've been maintaining
residency both here in S.E. Florida and Berkeley, California. I miss
C.I. when I'm here so Ive discussed rotating facilitation of
classes, jams, and or movement lab explorations with Iliegh Reynolds
who is an advanced instructor of C.I., Jenny Llewellyn Jones, and
Tracy Flemming. I understand that Iliegh would like to hold the
venue in the 'Design District' just North of downtown Miami after
completion of a dance studio there some time this spring. Me and
Iliegh agreed that Sundays somewhere between 2-7 p.m. may be a good
time to host. Jenny mentioned to me that she may be available at
least once a month probably more to facilitate. Myself and Iliegh
also could maintain a once a month rotation. Tracy indicated that
she may be involved less than that. She did mention a couple of C.I.
students of hers that she could recommend and there are others I
imagine who are willing and able to facilitate.
My immediate priority is to find a location now. I'm thinking
Coconut Grove or Coral Gables area seems centrally located enough.
But the initial location and times are flexible for me. My
experience with C.I. class/jams while traveling indicates that
attendance is quite variable. It occurs to me that I may be paying
for rental of a space unless others show. For myself I'm really just
interested in forming a C.I. community, so I would just ask
attendees to donate for rental. For the other facilitators I would
like to know if they are willing to volunteer their time at least
initially? The max I would personally pay is $30 for the minimum of
11/2 hours rental. Theres the possability of bartering ( I practice
massage bodywork ).
I originaly sent out an invitation to start a tribe.net C.I. group
for SE Florida. Apparently no one recieved it. Thats not the first
time Ive experienced loosing messages on 'tribe.net'. Though I like
tribe.nets' format as an alternative, it readily displays other
interesting links to the international art scene along with other
C.I. groups. Tribe may usally be reliable but Yahoo hopefully will
be more so. Even though both sites will be active (I want to have as
much coverage as possable) I will maintain this yahoo group as the
primary post, so please post on the ciseflo Yahoo group.
However posts on one will be copied to the other.

As for me facilitating C.I. classes I would feel comfortable
teaching basic to beggining intermediate level. I have several
hundred hours experience in C.I. So of course this will be quite a
learning experience. And this will be a good opportunity to share
what I gather from the West Coast, in addition to my own ideas for
exploration.
As some of you know I wanted to bring a wonderful instructor- Karl
Frost out for a workshop. He could be availble sometime in the first
half of May instead of April as I had previously explained. Its just
an idea, however if there are other instructors that we would like
to have, let me know and I'll be happy to help organize it.

What I would like to hear from you all is a brainstorm for-
1) what location is ideal
2) affordable locations
3)who can facilitate
4)promoting C.I. in Florida
5)who just wants to come to C.I. venues (how many are interested in
C.I.?)
6)what do you want or not want in C.I. here
7)any thing else, feed back, advise, inquiries, ideas
I will continue with postings in the immediate future but I just
want to get this invitation out now.
