I'm preparing to start running outdoors… at least once, just to see if it's something I can continue doing.
Preparing to load my mp3 player.
Does anyone know if classical music is good to run to? Or baroque? Or opera?
I don't want my first running experience to be "ruined" because I have the wrong music loaded. But since I've never tried before I don't know what I'll want to hear.

Re: Running?
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 10:07 AMI have a mixed experience with notational music and exercise. If it's anything that I like I tend to get deeply absorbed in it. That can be good, but I might notice my pace has been drooping for the last 4 minutes because I'm in the middle of some exquisite passage.
I'd choose something lively and bright, maybe Mozart, Vivaldi, Brandberg Concertos, Beethoven's fifth ... in that ballpark. Handel.

Re: Running?
Fri, April 10, 2009 - 12:01 AMI am not a runner, but I rather think that something like Stravinsky's Petroushka might be good. Bloch's Schloemo (sp?) is probably not, even if it IS performed by Jacqueline Dupre. -

Re: Running?
Fri, April 10, 2009 - 8:43 AMI just don't know if I'm better sticking to the things I know by heart and love, or if I'm better with something unfamiliar as more "background."
Probably won't know until I try, huh? (buckle up and do it!) -

Fri, April 10, 2009 - 9:05 AMI expect which composer you select will not be the factor that determines whether or not you take to running. : ) -

Re: Running?
Fri, April 10, 2009 - 3:59 PMI walk daily. I reward myself by discovering new music. I carry my discman with me. Once a month I shop for 5 new CD's and make sure that I hear them at least 3 times during that first month. I have a rotatation system that gets me back to them about once a year. I regard it as a learning experience and an extra benefit while takeing care of my physical and mental health. My selections are based on makeing discoveries, not on compelling me to exercise briskly. I am almost 70, so this is good for me. -

Re: Running?
Thu, April 16, 2009 - 1:59 PMI have tried (and tried and tried) to run with classical music. The problem is, the tracks are too long, generally, as opposed to pop music tracks (which you can just skip easily to the next if it starts to get you down). Maybe with an Ipod you can get something together that works. I run with a regular old-fashioned CD player, and have found nothing that works. For walks, though, that's a whole other question. I could run to Philip Glass, though. Does that count as classical? -

Thu, April 16, 2009 - 2:20 PMBeats me… and as yet, what I'm doing doesn't entirely qualify as running, either. -

Re: Running?

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Running?
Sat, April 18, 2009 - 3:08 PMMy answer is the Goldberg variations. So perfect. So perfect for anything. Cleansing, pure, beautiful.
Bah. Try making love to it. Try running to it. Try even trying to work to it. Ca ne se fait pas.
Good luck, and let me know what you find as far as running music. I run to U2 or Autour de Lucie. -

Re: Running?
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 7:19 AMThis past weekend, I took an "easy" choice… metal. I ran to Ruun by Enslaved. That was pretty awesome. (The name itself is pretty encouraging.)
I have yet to even load any classical on my player… not sure what's holding me back, just haven't done it. But, my player does allow me to pick up radio stations, and there are a couple of great classical stations in my area.
And I've also got a mind to try running to some soundtrack music for the recent Battlestar Gallactia series. A lot of it is classically-based, a lot of it is metal, some of it is a little… "world music"? But I think that may have to wait until I can do more actual running than I have so far. (Half a block and half a block and half a block really isn't long enough to truly audition running music.) -

Re: Running?
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 1:26 PMI don't know anything about that.
But I read once that you should listen to music 15-30 minutes BEFORE you run, to energize yourself for the run. That might be the moment to listen to classical music. Then you can switch to Enslaved when you actually go out the door. 1812 overture, perhaps?
