Im really hoping someone might be able to help me? Mr Tummnus, the faun from the movie the lion the witch and the wardrobe plays a musical instrument which I have no idea of the name or whether it is even real? I wouldnt call it a flute nor pan pipe and as for the sound thats anyone guess, perhaps a 'Panbagflute'?? I have not come across one single musicaly minded or instrument knowledgable person capable of answering my question, So, for anyone who knows or is at least up to the challenge?
Failing this, if I could find the movies....? props? person, well maybe I would get somewhere....
Thanks all.

Re: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 8:46 AMSure Raven, I too was curious and did a little research though it has been a while. The sound and the instrument threw me since physically it looks like a multiple clarinet, possibly the šurle from Yugoslavia, but the sound at least from what I remembered was more flute like. Also from what I remember of the movie it had a newer look to it, so it probably was a reconstruction or newer version of an older form, so that a double flute built in the form of a šurle is entirely possible. If you google šurle in 'images' you will see what I mean. There are so many types of these instruments since they are folk in character, and very regional, that it is difficult to pinpoint them down at times.

Fri, March 23, 2007 - 8:58 AMRaven.T, if you are really super curious, UCLA has a nice ethnomusicology department and you might inquire there, or possibly any other grad school in your region with such a department.
Last time I grew extremely curious about an instrument was when I was about twenty-five and heard a lute. Danged if it didn’t become a great companion in my life.

Re: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 9:54 AMOK, there was a bit more online than when I first looked so it was a relatively easy find. It seems the instrument doesn’t really exist, it was a prop. One link talked about the music and composer:
"Gregson-Williams watched the movie numerous times to get a feel for the characters, and to develop musical themes he thought were fitting. His interpretation of Mr. Tumnus the faun was particularly unique. 'The character Mr. Tumnus was fairly straight forward for me as he actually plays a musical instrument on camera. The instrument he plays does not exist and is a figment of a Prop Maker's imagination, so I was able to chose what sound I thought it might make. I ended up with a Duduk, which not only sounded like it was coming form his instrument, but provided a mysterious, beautiful tone for me to utilize.'"

Re: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 10:14 AM"Lark in the Morning" sells duduk's for about two hundred if you're interested. For some reason I seem to recall a couple voices (musical lines) going on simultaneously in the movie. They probably just double tracked it, since it doesn't look like there's a drone on the instrument itself.

Oh yeah, be aware there are several types of duduk (a double reed) from the Balkans and it ranges clear over to Armenia, so I’m unsure which sub-instrument produced the exact sound on the movie. There are several links here:

It was a pleasure doing the research for you, good luck. -
