Howdy,
I'm a neophyte undertaking a small study of the classical period. I'm working through Rosen's magnificent study "The Classical Style" and reading some biographies of the great composers from the era, and listening to as much as I can.
I'm looking for some suggestions on where to start with Haydn. His output is voluminous and it's nearly as easy to buy all of his string quartets as a few. But I don't want all of them, I want to focus on some of his great works. All I've got at the moment is his London symphonies and some of his gorgeous masses.
What are some of his essential works in various genres, especially symphony, concerto, chamber music? What are some immortal performances? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Tue, March 31, 2009 - 3:11 PMWater Music and Music for Royal Fireworks. Bang.
The Messiah.
Clock Symphony.
Me, I like Hayden partly for sentimental reasons, and partly because of his influence on Beethoven (who I kind of like more). For that, look at his later symphonies (not the very last, more toward the middle-end) and his late string quartets. But that's just me.
As to performances, I'm cheap and easy, but generally, anything pre-late-70s is going to take liberties with - oh, how do you say - trills, ornamentation and fancy notes, and anything after is going to avoid interpretation and go straight to what's on the page. Me, I like the ornamentation. But for "purity," go for the later recordings, post-Hogwood St. Martins-in-the fields stuff. -

Tue, March 31, 2009 - 7:43 PMI'll check out the Clock symphony - thanks!
The other works you mentioned are by Handel, whom I quite like, and I know them well. My favorite piece by Handel is Dixit Dominus -- the John Eliot Gardiner version is absolutely mind-blowing. -

Wed, April 1, 2009 - 10:55 AMThanks Tim. Do you have a version you like? I'm considering the Gardiner or the early von Karajan. -

Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Wed, April 1, 2009 - 7:37 PMI have 2 recordings - On Philips, with 2 of the smaller masses -and an LP recording on Vox. I enjoy both, but have not listened to the LP's for years. You don't have to be fussy. Just enjoy whatever you choose. -
-
Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Thu, April 2, 2009 - 8:44 AMi don't see it as fussy -- different performances can be like night and day. Klemperer's B minor mass, for example, leaves me unmoved, while Gardiner's sends me straight to heaven.
Anyway, I ordered the Gardiner. -

Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Sun, November 8, 2009 - 6:32 PMNo... Klemperer's b minor mass doesn't do it for me, either, but his recording of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis DOES. (So does Gardiner's.)

Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Sun, November 8, 2009 - 6:29 PMHI!
There are some "immortal" performances - most of which are not period instrument performances.
The London Symphonies with Beecham conducting. (EMI)
Symphonies 92 - 99 with Szell conducting (Sony)
Oxford Symphony with Bohm (DGG)
Symphony 31(Hornsignal) and 45 (Farewell) with Mackeras (Telarc)
The Season's with Beecham conducting (EMI)
Horn Concerto with Halstead (I forget the label)
The Creation with Karajan conducting (Janowitz and Wunderlich singing) (DGG)
Any of the String quartets - I like Qt. Italiano, Kodaly, Lindsey... Favorites of mine are opus 33, opus 74 and opus 76, also "The Lark"
Bernstein's Haydn is generally very good (I especially like the masses)
Although I am an operaphile, I really don't know Haydn's operas even though he wrote quite a few. Can't recommend anything there...
There is really a wealth of Haydn out there for the listening. Good luck! hope this was helpful.

Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 9:05 AMThanks for your suggestions Robert -- I'll put these on my list and definitely get at least a few of them.
In the last few months since i first wrote this post I ordered the Gardiner Creation, which does not really do it for me, though I can admire it technically. It seems a bit, I don't know, bombastic to my ears.
I have absolutely loved his string quartets and masses though, and some of his symphonies.

Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 6:18 PMAlong with some symphonies, etc, you should definitely get familar with his incredible string quartets. Some of my personal favorite quartets of his are the Op. 33 quartets (particularly the 29th in G Major "How Do You Do", and the 30th in E Flat Major--"The Joke"), the Op. 50 "Prussian" ones (No.1 in B Flat major is my favorite), the Op. 77 ones (no. 2 in F major is my fave.) The Kodaly quartet is a good first choice--it's cheap too (on the Naxos label), but rest assured, the quality is high. -

Thanks for the recommendations! The ones I know and love at the moment are the "Prussian" and "Sun" quartets ... I'll look at the others. -

Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Fri, December 4, 2009 - 9:48 PMI like his flute concerti. But get the recordings by James Galway - Jean Pierre Rampal tried to shoot them ful of adreneline, and he misses all the nuances, because he is too busy showing off his virtuosity. -
-
Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Sat, December 5, 2009 - 12:03 PMI could see that being a problem in performing Haydn concerti. Most audiences want the soloist to be dynamic and virtuosic, but the structure of Haydn's compositions are so elegant it's important not to obscure their contours.

Tue, December 8, 2009 - 7:58 AMWhat, you mean you really don't want to listen to all his Baryton works? : )

Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Tue, December 8, 2009 - 8:59 AMI've been looking for those, actually -- the collection I want is out of print. :/ -

Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Thu, December 10, 2009 - 5:02 PMI think there is a reason for that...
I don't think they are very interesting - and much less interesting than even Clementi or Cherubini -
-
Re: seeking Haydn recommendations
Fri, December 11, 2009 - 10:24 AMHm, that's good to know! Thanks!
My understanding is that Haydn wrote those pieces largely as a favor to one of the Esterhazys, who played the instrument. If he wrote those pieces for an amateur, it makes sense that they wouldn't be thrilling.
I mostly just want to hear that instrument, which sounds really cool.
