Just grabbed a great new cd from Naxos, 'Jazz at the Philarmonic' featuring the Clarinetist, Andy Miles. This chap IS the clarinet, he does a sublime version of Autumn Leaves that ends the cd, a really good listen.

But his tone is not as pure (for lack of a better word - perhaps clean) as Eddie Daniels. Daniels upper register never ceases to amaze me, because it is so free from overtones and reediness as to sound more like a flute than a clarinet.

Clean is a good word and after having a listen to the two I think you are right,.Daniels might play more ,use more upper register as that (to me) sounds where he is really comfortable. That cd I mentioned possibly isn't the greatest either as the first track is abysmal( to my ear and palate).
