A hidden gem in the UK tv listings at the moment. Found on a Saturday evening on BBC2, the personable presenter and conductor Charles Hazelwood takes one composer a week associated with English music ( Purcell, Handel, Haydn and Mendlesson) and looks at his life and music etc. Extremely watchable, interesting and informative. Worth keeping an eye for when the Beeb broadcast this series of four programmes abroad. Highly recommended.

I've been catching up with this on iplayer and enjoying it - yet to see the program on Mendlesson. Friday evenings on BBC4 are often worth a look as that seems to be 'music night'.

The Mendelsson program was really fascinating. My first impression was that he wrote music which celebrated Scotland because Queen Victoria was a fan of all things Scottish. As it turned out Mendelsson visited Scotland before Victoria had even set foot in the country, so perhaps he converted her? Interesting stuff.
