In MY Cleveland Dreams
I am with a friend who is
FROM CLEVELAND.......
I am
SEEING
CLEVELAND
Through
HIS EYES
and not
my own.
His Vision (and memories) are different then mine so everything is a little blurry and out of focus around the edges.
We are walking through the neighborhoods of his childhood.
A Street.
An Apartment.
A Bookstore (now empty).
A House (now gone).
A School Playground (where children play baseball and tug-of-war in the August sun).
It is very hot.
I am wearing sandals.
He tells me to be careful because
there are scorpions in Cleveland.
I see them scuttling along the pavement.
There is a sense of danger and excitement.
A man calls out his name but we cannot see him.
We walk for a long time trying to find the body that goes with the voice.
We both heard him call out but he seems to have disappeared.
The Dream Ends.
I wake up and call him.
We talk about many things.
I do not tell him of the dream.

Yes
WHY were you THERE?
Born and raised in Parma. Would venture downtown to see the Indians, occasionally to attend a movie with my older sister, or go on shool field trips to the natural history museum further to the east.
HOW LONG were you THERE?
First 15 and a half years and most of my twentieth
WHAT did you SEE THERE?
I don't follow the question.
DO THERE?
School, sports, the usual
EAT THERE??
No regional cousine that I can recall, vegetables and fruit from my dad's garden, junk food, etc. It was a big deal in my family even to go to Dairy Queen or McDonald's. We only ate out when traveling.
WHY DID YOU LEAVE CLEVELAND?
My dad retired from the factory and was sick of shoveling snow.
DO YOU HAVE CLEVELAND DREAMS ???
Not for a long time. I have looked at our old house via flash earth, that was sort of dreamlike.
IF SO WHAT ARE THEY LIKE????
I recall one that was down in the flats, an area that I've probably never been. I think the dream came from reading about Pere Ubu playing in an old dive called The Pirate's Cove in amongst the steel mills. They mentioned that the place was so cold that the audience would stand on their chairs, so as to be as far from the frigid concrete floor as possible. I was in Cleveland at the time when Ubu was playing there, but it was a couple years before I'd even heard of them.
