This Sunday at the Box: A Tribute to Sean Keilly

It has been a year since the passing of our friend Sean "Gobo" Keilly,
and the Box will be holding a small benefit this Sunday in his honor.

We will be starting the night off as early as we are allowed: 9pm, so
those of you who cannot normally make it out on Sunday nights can come
in for at least a quick visit.

There will be an altar with candles for you to light if you wish,
pictures of Sean, a book for his friends to write in (which we will be
giving to Sean’s family). Suggested donation of $5 at the door – all
proceeds will go directly to Sean’s family to help them pay for some
of the debt that remains, and hopefully help get him a tombstone.

The sounds will are heavier a little more old school, more Industrial. Think LED.s in blue, green.... alien electronic glow . The Decor....something like, HR Geiger, Alien, Species, and the likes. As always the show starts at 10 pm at the Seabright bar and Lounge. This time, the cover will be $5 at the door or $3 if you bring us a cool piece of broken electronics to be used for display/play time...:) The more interesting the better, I'm thinking computer guts, grinding gears, and things that one might find if they were walking through the "Event Horizon". This is your chance to really be a part of the event, make your own decor, and hellish suits. Extinction, should feel like a abandoned, angry, gutted spacecraft, left in the guts of Hell.

was it's inventor, producer and supporter is also gone (and boy, does that
ever make me sad).

Why don't we see if we can get this tribe closed down and direct everyone
to either the BOX and REVENANT tribes and/or the SC Goth tribe?

Both those clubs and the entire SC Goth scene can use as much focus
as possible.

Help! Need a group to go to Burning Man with

I’m looking for a group around Santa Cruz that is going to Burning Man and is willing to open their camp to me and allow me to drive to it with them. I have never been to burning man before but always wanted to go. The problem is that my closest friends are computer hermits, married, or hate events like burning man so going with them is out of the question. Furthermore because I have not attended a burning man before I have absolutely no idea what to bring to it or how to prepare for it. I have not bought tickets yet because I have no idea if I will even be able to go however I have noticed that there are still plenty of them on ebay so I doubt that will be a problem.

If a group takes me in I can bring lots of booze and beer, enough to share with the entire group and perhaps some greenery if need be. I can even share driving duty there and back if they need me to.

July 4th we honor our fallen leader, the honorable Sean 'Gobo' Keily. We dedicate this night to our dear friend, who's absence is felt by all. This will be our last Revenant at the Blue Lagoon, our last chance to honor Sean and his legacy of Fate. I hope dearly to see you all there.

The people are in turmoil, the revolt is at hand. Join the misanthrope army! it's your DUTY! July 4th, 2008 we stand together in Revolution. Whats your rank, soldier? What's your division? Are you a gorilla fighter, in camo fighting on the streets, or an officer decorated and bravely out in front leading the charge? Perhaps your the medic watching over us, keeping the scrapes and bruises bandaged while tossing a Molotov over your shoulder at the evil Juggernaut of corruption and compliance. We need you, all of you, to make this happen.

The fight begins at the Blue Lagoon July 4th, 2008 at 10pm sharp! DJ's Stiletto, Syndael, and Unit 77 will be lifting morale by spinning battle anthems for you all.

So what are we fighting for you ask? For what we hold dear. To continue on, to show that we will survive. This is the end of an era, Friday nights at the blue lagoon are NO MORE. however, we will not give up! We will find a new home, a place we can dance, laugh, hang out, and show that the Santa Cruz goth scene is far from gone. We will let you all know as soon as we have definite plans, but for know have hope in that we will not go down easily! We will do our best to keep you all posted on our progress.

The Save Gobo Foundation: A message to all

It is with an unbelievable heavy heart that we regretfully inform all of you that Sean passed away this morning (06-13-08). He had his family by his side and was in no pain. It is an understatement to say that Sean will be greatly missed.

At this time no funeral arrangements have been made. Once we have details on a service we will post them here and on the forums. Please do not contact the family at this time as they need time to sort things out.

Monday, March 17th (for anyone who wants to avoid the drunken debauchery that is
St. Paddy's Day) sees the return of the Japanese Synth-Goth band, the ROYAL DEAD
and special guests nO thiNg (industrial middleeastern dance music) at
the BOX, at the Blue Lagoon on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz.

The ROYAL DEAD are in the middle of their western states tour and have a new album out.
The last time they came saw the largest turnout in two years at the BOX.

They have a mixture of J-pop, synth goth, classical music and are very theatrical..........a lot of fun!!!!

Rick Walker's industrial middleeastern project, nO thiNg opens in a duet collaboration with
John Connel (guitar and keyboards). Rick will play distorto bass, keyboards, drums, industrial
metal percussion, strumstick, trumpet and traditional middleastern percussion.

They will be playing minimalistic, heavy beat driven tradiditional middleastern music.

nO thiN g starts at 10 o'clock and the ROYAL dead play at 11 p.m.

Where’s gobo? Finally the truth is revealed!

Cross-posted like crazy to catch all my friends.

I gotta’ say, deeply appreciate all the “I hope you’re getting well” and “we miss you, come back soon” notes I have received over the last few weeks. I am also honored (and sometimes amused) by the rumors and speculation that have been swirling around my absence. Thank you my friends for thinking of me.

So here’s the skinny...

At first, I had a nasty cold and was staying home to speed my recovery so that I could get back to the party full force. But the cold lingered on and on. So after about 6 weeks, I went to the doctor to find out what was up. I’d love to use a little humor to share the results with ya’ll, but its easier to just come out with it. The doctor tells me that I’ve come down with a touch of the Leukemia. I go to Stanford tomorrow to start treatment. I’m told that my condition is very treatable and a little research tells me that my specialist at Stanford is nationally recognized as one of the very best. Those of you that know me well know that I am in the habit of fighting hard with wit and guile for what I want. This situation is no different. My feelings toward this whole thing are confused, of course. At the same time, the better part of me is feeling very positive. I have been preparing myself for a big change for some time (I just thought I’d be moving to go to school.) My mind and spirit are very flexible right now. I know how strong I am. If something like this has to happen to me, this is the time for it.

But can the clubs run without Gobo in charge of everything? Hell yeah!!! :-) I didn’t start this scene, and I didn’t start The Box. The club passes from leader to new leader and survives every time. I can tell you a bit about where things in club land are going. As I said before, I have been planning to leave town for a while. We at The Box have spent the last year actively preparing for this time of change. (My cohort’s training has been exceptional and rigorous, if I may indulge my ego for just a moment ;-) Julian, Disconnect, Syndael, Stiletto, and Grey are absolutely prepared to take The Box over, keep it going, and continue the improvements you’ve all enjoyed. So fear not. I hear that it’s been pretty strong down there last few weeks, and I expect it will still be when I come for my next visit.

Unfortunately, January’s FATE is canceled. I really wanted to have a final show, but it’s just not possible this month. I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the party. I have! I DO intend to recover, so I DO have some future plans for FATE. They’re just on hold for now.

Being the clubin’ pirate that I am, you know I have something up my sleeve no matter what the circumstances. Keep your eyes open for the pay Gobo’s bills benefit show. Coming Soon!

AND, OPENING FEBRUARY 1st 2008, the First Friday in February… something insidiously sinister and new at THE BLUE LAGOON… details to be announced soon. So, SC’s Friday night goth club tradition will continue after all? Of course it will. Hooray!

So, that’s the news for now. I’ll keep you all informed as new things happen. I’ll be letting everyone know where their hiding me because visitors rock! (hint hint ;-) And please, do not forget to support the clubs!

I'll publish the best ways to contact me as soon as I figure them out. More as it happens and see you all as soon a possible!

Jan FATE is CANCELED -- Stay tuned for something new in Feb '08!!!!

I can't tell you how painful it is to have to do this, but due to my sudden illness, FATE as a monthly is closed. Makes me want to cry. I appreciate your absolutely fantastic participation these last two and half years. I said it when we opened: YOU are the hands of FATE! I made the room, but you filled it with that vibe.

NOW PAY CLOSE ATTENTION!!!! There *will* be a new monthly event opening the first Friday in Feb. That's Feb. 1st 2008. This new party will kick ass because you will be there and you will be hot! HOT! There will be elements and people that you are familiar with and certainly lots of new excitement. Mark you calendars now and stay tuned to the various usual places (like here) for details!

So what of FATE? As it turns out, Fate and I are having a little negotiation right now. Once we get a few details sorted out, I will be bringing this hot rod of a party out once in a while. Look forward to good things.

And don't forget, this scene is filled with enormously talented people. Some are discovered, and some are just emerging. Keep the party going (and my secret advice to you timid patrons is never let your promoters off the hook! They work for you! Tell them exactly what you want and demand they give it to you. It's the only way they can know what you want. I know my fellow promoters will all be hunting me down now, but I'm someplace they get to me. So ha!.)

Friday's FATE was quite a treat for us. Seeing that it was post Halloween and all, I was sure you'd be partied out. I was sure Stiletto and I would be hanging in an empty room all night. But no! You showed up in force. What's wrong with you people? Don't you ever rest? Beating the piñata to death was a lot of fun. It was great to see such a mixed group. There were people from all over as well a lot's of peeps I'd never seen before. Thank you for staying so late and making us throw you out again :)

Myself (gobo) and The Fox are guest DJs this Friday at NEMESIS in Mountain view. This a NEMESIS' special old school night. pirate parting party

Hi all,

I am leaving Santa Cruz (->Cambridge/Mass.) by the end of August. Sad but true. (Hey, who popped that bottle of champagne...? ;-) )

I am leaving so many wonderful friends behind and want to say goodbye. Hence, there is a pirate attire party at my place this Saturday 11th. Yes, I love everything pirate. It's what brought me to fate.

Would be nice if some of you had nothing better to do and can make it so I can hug & sob you goodbye!

I have a couple extra eyepatches if needed - and yes, an unusual request: there will be kids around so please be a bit cautious about those extra-raunchy outfits. Nah, fishnets, hotpants, boots, corsets etc are okay and very desired, but the cat-o-nine may be a little overdressed - you get the idea.

The BEST of TIMES

I was really gratified going to the Box on Monday evening.

A lot of former patrons of the club came out, the music was fabulous
(Sean, in particular, played a stellar old school set) and I turned to
Emily whilst dancing and said, "wow, this feels like the good old days, here"

It was nice to see people out. Considering that FATE and the 2nd Anniversary of Satori
had just occurred on Friday and Saturday nights before it meant the turnout was really excellent.

I don't know if it's what happened at the end of FATE with all the purse thefts but it seemed like it was part of the vibe.
At least a couple of people told me they came out in support of the club.

The WORST of TIMES

At the same time as I had a great time at the BOX,

I have to admit being a little mystified by the almost complete lack
of response to my suggestion to take up a fund for the few women who were really
hurt badly by the theft of their valuables.

I had one person offer to give money to a fund to help them out from our scene and,
impressively, the offer of a donation from an old schooler who doesn't even live here any more.

Other than that, it's just me and two other people (none of whom makes very much money).

I'm curious: What's the sentiment:

1) Fuck it, the women were naive and deserved what they got consequently?

2) Are people still considering donating but just haven't gotten around to it?

3) People are feeling to strapped to help out in such a situation?

4) people just aren't reading the SCGoth yahoo groups and the SCGoth Tribe postings?

5) obviously, many other factors I haven't thought of?

I agree with Robin, that without specific agreements ahead of time that the Blue Lagoon is not financially responsible for the losses,
but this is more about having a little empathy for our sisters who were ripped off.

Please enlighten me if you care to take the time. I appeal again to your generosity and your feelings of solidarity.

MEDITATION on LAST NIGHT's MASS PURSE SNATCHING AT FATE

As I was driving home from my gig tonight I was meditating on the purse snatches
last night at FATE.

Here's what I thought about and would like to propose:

Conservatively speaking and speaking with several of the victims, people lost between
$75 - $300 in cell phones, purses, wallets, cash and incidentals.

One person I know had all of her families food money for the next two weeks in the purse that was stolen and she lives
on a very limited income.

I was also thinking that in a way, we all were stolen from collectively last night (even though it was women who lost their possessions
due to the social conventions of carrying purses). Obviously , it will be good to make some changes in the whole coat check policy and I thank Sean for jumping on that one and proceeding to get it straightened out.

Some people in our scene have really lucrative jobs in the hi tech world.
Some people are barely scratching out a living trying to stay in this county.

Some people were devastated by their losses............some were not as devastated.

Considering all of this, I would like to propose two things that we can all do to at least lighten the blow of this violation:

1) I would like everyone who had their purses stolen contact me , confidentially, off of this tribe and let me know how much of a blow this
theft was to you (with the knowledge that your confidentiality will be strictly adhered to and respected). Figure out exactly what your losses were.

2) Secondly, I would like to suggest that anyone who feels like they are doing well financially enough currently
give me a cash donation that I will annonymously give out to whoever can truly use this. If I manage to collect more than the losses incurred, I can give the remainder to Sean so that they can start paying for coat check person at the Box and at Fate (though I truly believe that this should be the Blue Lagoons responsibility as long as they are making a profit on our events).

I figure if you can afford $5, great! if you can afford $50 even better.
I'd like to suggest that everyone give a little each according to his or her needs and ability to contribute.

I'll be at the Box in the next couple of weeks, definitely. Please come interrupt me in conversation if you have a donation, okay?

I actually make very little money, living off of my artistry and trying to maintain a mortgage, but I will start by kicking in $25 to this
kitty to get the ball rolling.

We were all abused by this incident and , frankly, the chances of recovery are slim from my experience of similar things in the past,
but if we open our hearts and our wallets, we could seriously soften the blow as an entire community.

What do you guys say? Let's get together and kick in what we can afford to donate to help heal this incident the best way we can.
If you can't afford to give anything, don't sweat it at all. Just wish us luck.

Blood Vessel - Rue Morgue crewing up for fundraisers and Burning Man

The Blood Vessel - Rue Morgue is crewing up for our fundraisers and for Burning Man. We need lovelies for Camp Manager, LNT Mgr, press liaisons, bar tending, Blood Vessel Hotties, Pal Bearers and more.

For those unaware of the Blood Vessel - Rue Morgue, its an art project involving the Blood Vessel art car with the goal of taking hand made art coffins to Burning Man's Temple burn. People make origami cranes at the Rue Morgue camp. The cranes have the well wishes of the departed to be taken inside the coffins to be burned.

We celebrate the death as well as the life and help people release the pain they have inside. Our 25 foot coffin trailer towed by the hearse "Clarice" carries the party fun part of what we do, dance our asses off!

Please visit our tribe, join, come be part of art project with a purpose.

The Blood Vessel (affectionately named Clarice) is a 1971 Cadillac MM Side-loading hearse soon to be transformed into a rolling piece of street legal art. I gotta' tell you, all the most fashionable PPiBs will be lining up to have their picture taken with this future star of the highways.

FATE was AMAZING!

Thanks so much everyone. I had such a good time that night!

It was worth the price of admission seeing Sean's costume, my favorite of the night.
He was truly frightening. I just imagine him rampaging down the mall after it was all over
sucking cute boys necks left and right..............priceless!!!!!!

Anyway, I was really inspired and can't wait for the next one!

Actually we are NOT Spikes Vampire bar. Lets make that clear but thank you. I understand the confusion. I worked on Spikes for many years managing the bar portion of the project so many people know me from there as well as starting up the Black Rock Beacon, Burning Mans daily newspaper.

With some others I have gone out on my own to do the Blood Vessel. We are another breed of Vampires really. Its a great cover to use a morgue to sleep in. Essentially we are "Blood Vessel, The Rue Morgue". I had a fondness for Spikes but was looking to do something fresh and found a new avenue.

The Rue Morgue theme camp at Burning Man will have a bar for the more animal side of us, and on the other side a space for coffins called a "Morgue". Inside the coffins people put origami cranes they make with the well wishes to the departed destined for the temple burn.

So, there will be a party space for our brand of eclectic goth, Industrial etc, as well as a more spiritual serious side.

Creech ( a master gear head) and I teamed up and formed The Blood Vessel affectionately named Clarice. The Blood Vessel is a 1971 Caddy Miller Meteor side loading hearse, with huge articulated bat wings on top and awesome fire effects on top. Inside a coffin bar comes out the side to dispense a liquid refreshment of dubious origin served by our uber-delicious Blood vessel Hotties headed by Pony Ride and Duchess of Booze. Behind it we tow The Last Caress, a 22 foot coffin with dance floor and places to tie your victims to. Tremendous fun last year and Nicadermos and I paired the two vehicles together to form a perfect union of Machine and Coffin.

Thanks for allowing me to clarify this. We have a lot of good people on The Blood vessel - Rue Morgue project and Id really like to give them the credit they deserve, they work so damn hard and its a labor of love.

Goth Picnic Fundraiser at Evergreen

That's right--it's a goth picnic in Evergreen Cemetery. Join your macabe friends for an afternoon at this historic site and help support a worthy cause.

We're having a fundraiser to help send the Blood Vessel, a hearse art-car, to Burning Man this year. Local goth Creech, along with Gothalot and a whole bevy of folks, are working to send the Blood Vessel to the Playa. You can learn more about this project at our Tribe:

Heavy Industrial oriented traditional Belly Dancing music

for any and all to dance to
at this week's DEFIANCE, Friday (midnight performance), November 17th
at Club Caution (516 Front Street, Santa Cruz)

I will be joined by Switchblade Symphony founding member, Robin Jacobs on guitar and
the amazing John Connell (multi-instrumentalist) on bass guitar.

I've been disappointed that a lot of tribal and gothic belly dancing music always seems so ambient and new-agey at times
so I wanted to do something a little darker and aggressive yet till use rhythms that anyone who's ever even had a beginning
belly dancing class would be able to dance to.

All the rhythms will be traditional......................all the sounds will NOT be.

I hope you can make it, I hope you feel like dancing.

Urceus Exit from Vancouver ( www.UrceusExit.com ) a band in the strong tradition of Vancouver bands Skinny Puppy and

A BIG thank you to everyone that made it out to FATE this last Friday night! Something I really enjoyed... reviewing the numbers at the end of the night and confirming what I already suspected. There where more of you dressed in theme attire than not. And have you ever looked so stylish? I think not. I was also thrilled by Meester's set. Judging for the dance floor response, you were too. We'll be sure to keep his brand of music coming your way.

we will be having MASSIMO LIVERANI, a wonderful looping guitarist from Italy along with my brother

GUITAR MINI LOOPING FESTIVAL. The gig goes from 8-10 p.m. and all ages are welcome.
We are requesting a donation but noone will be turned away for lack of funds.

It's pretty amazing that this guy has come all the way from Firenze Italy (where he produced one of Europe's

Is that the cold hand of FATE, or are we just teasing you with ice play?

Spend another wild night with CLUB FATE! this Friday night, December 2nd at the Blue Lagoon in downtown Santa Cruz. You know the drill. Dancing to fine Industrial/Gothic/EBM with the renowned FATE DJs. Drinks expertly concocted by Jeff the bartender. Go-go dancers that delight and entice. More friends than you can shake a riding crop at, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

There will be one important change this month. We are instituting a $5 cover (collected at the entrance to our room) instead of the traditional donation. But fear not, ye of limited disposable income! We shall aid you through this time of transition. There will be plenty of FREE PASSES available at the venue before you enter our party. Simply look around for our easy to spot Minister of FREE PASSES or ask our door staff how to get your hands on one of these bad boys. Assuming you are of darkened heart and proper attire (read as fancy black, cyber, period, rivet, death rock, fetish, costume, etc.) you will be quickly admitted into our den of forbidden pleasures. While your chances of free admittance are high, we still ask you to consider making a donation to help support this ongoing monthly event. (thanks!)
