and rank bands on a 1 (worst) to 10 (greatest) scale. I did it until is started to repeat.

Who do you think should be on the list, but isn't?

My choices (if we're sticking to the somewhat lose interpretation of "Rock ’n’ Roll" band): U2, The Alarm, New Order.

I am partial to The Beatles above all, but they were my first love even when I was a wee lass.

The Smiths should be in there! and Led Zepplin higher. But I agree with The Rolling Stones before 1980. Oasis is good, but above The Beatles??? wtf? As usual I missed a trend everyone seemed up on.

I spent 5 months in London. One night, at a party, I joked "The man who shot and killed John Lennon is up for parole in a couple of years. Wouldn't it be interesting if he shot and killed the Gallagher brothers?"

      People were not amused.

On a different tangent, there's plenty of R&R bands that are oddly absent from the survey. No Nine Inch Nails? I don't think they're the greatest band ever, but certainly better than the Libertines.

"I'd place the Eagles over the Smiths bases solely on their body of work, not on my personal preference."

To that I have to politely reply, you've got to be fucking kidding! The Eagles? If I never heard another Eagles song for the rest of my life, I'd die a happy man.

I just voted and the standings are pretty much the same now except 19 and 20 are now The Ramones (19 - 5.56) and The Kinks (20 -5.55).

I'm dissappointed that Oasis now has a slightly higher score 8.99, Jimi Hendrix is dropping to 7.8 (but the Beatles have almost taken the #2 spot with 7.78). I think Liam Gallagher must be skewing the vote!

This from a man who has a Hall & Oates poster hanging on his bedroom wall. An autographed poster at that.

Hey I hate the Eagles as much as you do but you can't deny the huge influence they had on music in the 70's. That goes double for Creedence Clearwater Revival. Why aren't they on the list? Stupid British git bastards.

No Bauhaus… no Van Halen.… no Elvis Costello and the Attractions… no Queen (WTF?)… no Police... and on and on and on…

but they do include the Replacements, Suicide, Happy Mondays, Blur, Pulp, Supergrass, the Melvins, Pavement, the Kings of Leon, CAN, Captain Beefheart, Teardrop Explodes, Slayer…

Meh. And I thought Americans had bad taste.

You can bet that a Canadian magazine with a similar list would include Rush and Barenaked Ladies.

the Brits have VERY strange taste. I was watching the Brit awards the other night....niminated for Best live act were:

          Kaiser CHiefs
          MUSE
          Editors (I think)
          Arctic Monkeys
          Take That

Now, anyone who has EVER seen Muse knows they kick a TON of ass live, like one of the most amazing bands I have seen in all my thousands of concerts. who won??

TAKE THAT ( a fucking BOY BAND that Robbie Williams had enough sense to bail on years ago.)

I almost threw my glass of wine at the TV.

          GROSS!

I would not consider NIN a "rock and roll band" really...Van Halen - absolutely!

Not much has changed since the last time that I looked.
A little flipping and flopping. The Jam and The Verve are out. Blur and The Kinks are in.

            1. Oasis
            2. The Beatles
            3. The Jimi Hendrix Experience
            4. The Rolling Stones
            5. The Clash
            6. Led Zeppelin
            7. The Who
            8. Nirvana
            9. The Smiths
            10. Manic Street Preachers
            11. Radiohead
            12. Pink Floyd
            13. The Sex Pistols
            14. The Stone Roses
            15. Joy Division
            16. The Doors
            17. The Ramones
            18. Blur
            19. The Libertines
            20. The Kinks

I really can't agree with a lot of those. Very British, for sure. So I decided to try my own list. Very personal and subjective. I struggled with the first nine or ten, but after that it was pretty easy. I tried very hard to stick to the "Rock 'n' Roll" genre of the title. Joy Division sure as hell aren't Rock 'n' Roll. New Order, Depeche Mode, The Cure- no, no, and no. Not Rock 'n' Roll either. Bowie? Glam/New Wave. Beach Boys? Surf. Oasis? Suck.

Then I eliminated bands that I never liked- Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd.

Bands with only one good album- Nirvana, The Sex Pistols, The Stone Roses, Radiohead.

And bands that have no business being on the list in the first place- Manic Street Preachers, Blur, The Libertines.

            Skip's Top-20 "Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Bands!"

            1. The Beatles
            2. The Rolling Stones
            3. U2
            4. Bruce Springsteen
            5. Rod Stewart
            6. Led Zeppelin
            7. The Ramones
            8. The Clash
            9. Buddy Holly
            10. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
            11. R.E.M.
            12. Elvis
            13. The Who
            14. The Smiths
            15. The Kinks
            16. The Alarm
            17. The Replacements
            18. Joan Jett
            19. The Go Go's
            20. The Cars
