All good SOMETHINGS must come to an end. Looks like I'm going to put SOMETHING to rest (at least for now).

The Cat Club indicated that they might have room for it, but that didn't work out. I'm just feeling a little burned-out lately and I would like to go out on a high note, since our last event was the biggest one ever.

10. Waiting till the band plays their radio hit and then leaving.

9. Standing at a seated venue.

8. Holding up a sign or flag for the duration of the show.

7. Spastic dancing and general disregard for personal space.

My biggest pet peeves are 3 and 1. I had to deal with a hyperactive talker next to me at the Laura Veirs show last week at BotH. I'm sure Dina will have a lot of input about this list since she attends or works at so many shows. Anyone else?

Great night! Best one so far for SOMETHING at the Cat Club! Guest DJ Danny White was awesome and the back room was packed- that's P...A...C...K...E...D, all night with happy, dancing people. We've been crowded before but not like that. Wow! Really fun. Danny may be unique now-a-days as he spins current Indie and Electro on vinyl only. Yes, that's right, I said vinyl only. No CD's or a laptop for him. Cool! We gave away tickets to see The Presets at Mezzanine this Wednesday. You going? I am. Hope to see you there.

Unfortunately prior to this night the Cat Club had already decided to cancel our third Friday slot due to SOMETHING and Shark Attack not pulling in enough people to consistently fill the club. I will be looking for a new venue. Any suggestions? Stay tuned for news on when and where.

Prefab Sprout - When Love Breaks Down

A band that never received the recognition or the success that they deserved. This song, from the Thomas Dolby-produced Steve McQueen, (released in America as Two Wheels Good), is excellent and one of my all-time faves. The album was remastered and released in a 2 CD package last year. If you see it, buy it!

The Presets - This Boy's in Love

Really, really like the new Presets release Apocalypso. This is the single and it has a very New Order-ish sound. I could easily get away with playing this one at NWC and no one would realize that it was a new song. DJ Omar turned me on to this one back in March when we DJ'ed the Gilbert & George event at the de Young. Excited about seeing the Presets next week at Mezzanine. I'll be giving away tickets for that show at SOMETHING on Friday.

Fun night! Although the late arriving crowd made me a little nervous. It's not unusual for the event after a big anniversary party to be lightly attended, but in the end we did just fine. From 11:30 on the back room was full of happy, dancing people. A woman made my night when she requested "Shadowland" from Youth Group and said that she first heard the song on my "What I'm Listening to..." post and she loves the song. Cool! Special thanks to Melting Girl who is always a pleasure to work with, and I really enjoyed dancing to her sets too.

I've received a lot of feedback that people really like this "What I’m listening to" post, but that they really don't have the time to actually listen to five songs. So, in order to appease my ADD readers/listeners, I'm going to simplify and only feature two songs- SOMETHING old and SOMETHING new.

Youth Group - "Shadowland"

This first one actually fits both criteria. It's old (November 2003), but new to me and I would guess, new to a lot of you, too. I ran across this band whilst checking the Australian charts to see how the new release from Cut Copy, "In Ghost Colours", (which we are giving away on Friday!) was doing. I wanted to see what else the Aussies were listening to, so I checked out this band with a really bad name- Youth Group. They had a #1 hit in Australia in 2006 with a cover of Alphaville's "Forever Young". This song, "Shadowland", answers the musical question- who sounds more like New Order than New Order? Very 80's sound and feel to it. I really, really like it!

The Kooks - "Always Where I Need To Be"

Very, very new is the new album Konk from The Kooks. Released on Monday, sounds every bit as good as their 2006 debut record, Inside In/Inside Out. The Kooks, along with The Foals, two English indie rock bands from Brighton and Oxford respectively, are two of my favorite new bands.

5. Vampire Weekend - A-Punk

An indie rock band from New York City, this first one is pretty much unavoidable lately- from Letterman to SNL to two local shows coming up. Not sure what I think of them yet, but I do like this song.

4. The B-52's - Funplex

Old is new and new is old, again, and the B-52's are back- or as they're now known, The B-52s. The new album, "Funplex" (their first original album in sixteen years!) is set to drop on Tuesday. I'm liking this one a lot. Bring on the summer and take me to the Funplex!

3. The Killers - Shadowplay

More old is new. Am I the only one who likes this version? Now, admittedly, if you had told me that you had found a new cover you liked of a Joy Division song, I would have said, "Why?" But I really like this cover!!! I think it captures the power and intensity of the original and updates it- in a good way. And all that from a little Pop band! Wow, who knew?

What I’m listening to this week - Top-5

Had to take a little break from WILTTW to catch up on the mountainous pile of "to listen to" CD's on my desk that was about to tip over like some out of control game of Jenga. A ton of good music has been released recently and I've made some great finds of stuff that slipped through the cracks when it came out over the busy holiday season.

The obvious choice for new stuff is the CD that we're giving away at the next SOMETHING- the new one from Goldfrapp. "Seventh Tree" is their forth album and was almost two years in the making. It's very different from anything they've done previously. "Seventh Tree" entered the UK album chart at number two upon its release on Feb. 25th, 2008. I really like it. Quiet and quite, beautiful.

This next one went into my multi-CD player and hasn't come out yet. Bell X1 is an Irish band that have been around in one form or another for quite awhile- with Damien Rice once a member even. Their album "Flock" was originally released in 2005, and much like The Postal Service's "Give Up", it has taken a few years to catch on. I can't for the life of me figure out why. Great CD from start to finish. Soft and pretty, but with a definite edge to it. I don't know if they're the next Bloc Party or the next Matchbox 20- hopefully closer to Snow Patrol, who I feel are highly underrated. As with any "new" band, the question for me is always, can they "bring it" live? YouTube offers up a number of live tracks that deliver a resounding, Yes!, as the answer. This one is from some Brit show and judging from the intro, the average age of the audience appears to be about eighty. An excellent stripped-down version, so as not to scare the old folks.

Been waiting, ever so patiently, for something new from Aussie lads Cut Copy ever since their totally awesome debut album, "Bright Like Neon Love" in 2004. Finally! The new CD, "In Ghost Colours", drops on March 22nd. Here's a new track to hold us over until then. Sounds great. Can't wait!

The first great concert of 2008!

Last night - March 10th. Rickshaw Stop. The Ting Tings.

The Ting Tings are Jules De Martino on drums & vocals, and Katie White on guitar & vocals. They've been writing and performing in their native England, releasing only two singles so far with a third, "Great DJ", out only last week (available on iTunes). Their debut album is set to drop in May.

Try to imagine the voice of Annabella Lwin from Bow Wow Wow in the body of a modern day Debbie Harry mixed with equal parts Indie and Electro and then stripped down to a duo. Got it? Now take that little toy and wind it up as tight as you can and then set it down and watch it go. Awesome show! They totally ripped it up! I can put this one in my "Top-10 for 2008" already and guarantee that it will stay there.

Playing with an uncommon fury for a two piece, albeit subtly aided by some backing tracks which were virtually unnoticeable unless you were really paying attention- like, oh yeah, there's a bass line to go with that slashing guitar and the frenetic drumming, they managed to sound much larger than the sum of their parts. Oh course on the show stopper, "That's Not My Name", the backing vocals were obvious. Other a than an ill advised slow song about three songs in, this was a great set- a little short, maybe. Judging by the throng of people leaving along with me afterward, I'm guessing I wasn't the only one there just to see them (they weren't the headliner).

The Ting Tings are on tour now, but with no plans as of yet for another Bay Area show. If and when they do return, don't miss them. I'll be there for sure.

The Alarm, The Beat, The Blue Nile, Bowie, The Chameleons, Duran Duran, The Hives, Annie Lennox, Necropolis of Love, Special Beat

4. What was your LIFE CHANGING concert you attended?
None really life changing.

5. Have you ever gotten something from the band? (ex. the guitarist's pick)
Lots of things- picks, set lists, buttons, bandannas. The best one was at a concert by The Baby’s at the San Jose Civic. I was front and center against the stage. When they came out for the encore, John Waite had a bottle of Courvoisier. He handed it to me. I took a drink and gave one to my friend Deirdre. They played a couple of songs and then went off and came back on again. I handed the bottle back to John, he took another drink and gave it back to me and said to keep it. Sounds pretty simple, but there were a sea of hands trying to grab that bottle. I put a cork in it and kept it for about twenty years. Finally drank the rest of it and tossed the bottle.

6. What genre is the best to see live?
Depends on the band.

7. Who was the worst band to see live?
Jesus & Mary Chain and Violent Femmes

8. Have you met any band or band members in any concert experience?
Too many to name. Became good friends with the guys from The Alarm.

9. How long was the longest concert you've attended?
Saw a few three-hour-plus shows by Bruce.

10. How short was the shortest concert you've attended?
Don’t know. I think Morrissey could have played a lot longer.

11. What is the worst thing to buy at a concert?
An eight-dollar beer.

12. Have you ever worn a band shirt to the same band your seeing live?
No. Only dorks do that.

13. What is the best venue you've ever been to?

Five minutes- from my place in the Haight to the Warfield on my Vespa with P’lito screaming on the back, to see Special Beat.

17. Do you like seats or the pit better?
Depends on the band

18. Do you go to the front close to the band or just the pit or in the middle?
Can’t deal with the front anymore. Hot, sweaty, smelly bodies all pressed up against me for hours? No thanks.

19. Do you go crazy at concerts?
No. But I have fun.

20. What is the most annoying thing at a concert?
The crowd. At a show by the Hives a couple years ago, it was driving me crazy because everyone was just standing there watching. I wanted to jump around. They were great.

21. Indoor or Outdoor concerts?
Indoor. Maybe a show at the Greek. Otherwise outdoor shows are for Hippies.

22. Day or Night concerts?
Night

Small

What in the hell is America listening to?

It's not like I didn't know this already, but the current Billboard Top-10 singles chart makes it very clear that I am completely out of touch with what the rest of America is listening to. With the exception of Barry Manilow, I can't even name a single song by any of these artists- and I suspect that Barry and I would have a very different opinion as to what were the greatest songs of the seventies.

What I’m listening to this week…10/19/07

Top-5 I'm listening to now - 10/19/07

Lately I feel like I just woke up from a coma. There are so many good songs that I’m finding for the first time, from bands that have been around for quite awhile (like Clinic from last post), that I wonder how I’ve never even heard of them. Well this band, Stars, is another one. I just picked up their forth release, In Our Bedroom After the War. How have they managed to stay below my radar? Or apparently, everyone’s radar. Why isn’t this band famous? I’ve found at least ten achingly beautiful songs from them and I haven’t even tried very hard. Here’s what Wikipedia had to say about them- "Stars is a Canadian indie pop band. Their music has been described as "beautiful, eloquent indie pop", characterized by lush instrumentation, nimble production and mixing, narrative lyrics, and soft but nuanced vocals." That’s pretty accurate. Let’s start with this one, Your Ex-lover is Dead, from 2004’s album, Set Yourself on Fire. Pretty, pretty song with a video that seems to have been obviously influenced by the frozen-lake scene in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. This song would have fit perfectly into that soundtrack. In fact, I had to check to see that it wasn’t on there.

Guillemots. Yet another band that I’d never heard of until I found this song. I don’t feel so bad though because they only have one album and three EP’s so far. They don’t really remind me of anyone, which is pretty rare for a new band. Kinda old-school British pub rock, at least on this song. One of the problems nowadays with new music is the cost of a new CD. Do you want to shell out $14 for one song from a band you don’t really know? I don’t. But what’s great about MySpace (the only redeeming quality IMO other than as a place to promote) is that if you find a new band’s page, you can listen to three or four songs all the way through, and then decide whether to buy the single off iTunes or get the CD. I totally scored by walking up to Amoeba after hearing this song and finding the EP, From the Cliffs, for $4. Deal!

Back in the first year of MTV, when they used to play actual videos, they didn’t have many to choose from- especially in the first few months. I can remember images from certain videos, but I have no idea what song or band they were from. I wish MTV would make a year by year DVD collection of the videos they played. This video got a lot of airtime. It is an exception to my rule of not really liking "quirky" singers. This is pretty quirky, but having a hot blonde with long legs in your video never hurts. It’s a song that definitely has a New Wave synthy influence. I bought the album at the time and this song stuck with me over the years.

A classic New Wave song. And again, quirky, but with a hot chick in the video. In this case it’s Kate Garner (who went on to have a successful photographic career- most notably shooting the cover of Sinéad O'Connor’s debut, The Lion and the Cobra). Two different versions for you. The first is unique because no one, and I mean NO ONE, lip-syncs to a 12" version of a song. And the second vid is the normal version. I include it here just for the chance to look at Kate’s eyes at the beginning (totally worth it!) and for that outfit she’s wearing 40 seconds in. Makes me want to play touch football with her. She’d be my center and we’d practice hiking the ball for about an hour, if you know what I mean. Enjoy!

It’s crankers week- songs that just sound great when they’re played at max vol.

1. A Brief Smile - Vicious

No effing idea where I got this one because I’ve found so much new music lately. I stuffed forty-one new songs into a folder on my iPod, commenced to working on the new flyer for the Halloween SOMETHING event, and then hit, play. When this song came up, the very first time I had heard it, I listened to it about fifteen times in a row and I think I turned it up louder each time. It’s 7:27 long so you know I really, really, dug it. Has a weird two-minute feedback-laced ending that I can’t decide if I like or not, but the first five-min rips!

2. Clinic - Lee Shan

It’s kinda disappointing when you think you’ve discovered a new band, only to find out they’ve been around for a while. The only thing worse is when you mention the band to your musically-impaired friend and they go, "Ahhh, yeah. I know them." Apparently this band has been around for ten years! Who knew? Not me. You? Well this song definitely hit me with a very different, yet familiar sound. And it’s another one where you can’t help but turn it up.

3. The Cribs - Men's Needs (CSS Remix)

Loved loved loved this one from the get-go. Fun video, too- although it’s a tad distracting from the song. Anyone know the girl? I need her to dance around just like that in my DJ booth- minus the dismemberment and projectile vomiting, of course.

An awesome evening of Manchester and Factory Records bands in support of our Tony Wilson Tribute took place at ReTox on Friday night. DJ6 and Donimo really did their homework as they came prepared to rock the place with some great dance music. And in the second room, the debut of a new club, "Something Wicked This Way Comes". Special thanks to DJ Daniel Skellington, as he had to man the turntables all night because DJ Melting Girl was unable to attend.
This was an especially fun evening with lots of dancing, happy, 24-hour party people. Once again we had to kick people out the door at 2am as everyone wanted to keep on dancing. I think ReTox needs to apply for an after-hours permit!

DJ Skip spins at the final Shadowplay this Friday - 9/21

Friday, September 21 is the Closing Party for Shadowplay at the Stud.

Five and a half years after starting at 26 Mix, and after a 2 1/2 year run at the Stud, and after 100 (+/-) Shadowplays, they are wrapping it up! Guest DJ Skip (New Wave City) joins DJ Donimo (Lucky Pierre, Heat, Substance) for one last blow out, spinning the latest indie electro remixes plus classic new wave.

Come celebrate with us the end of an era! Dancers Ben and Annie, and the Stud's stiff cheap drinks will keep you dancing. You can pretty much count on the DJ's getting drunk and happy and playing whatever you want. Any requests?

So come on out and have a closing night drink with us and dance to some great music.

1. Hello Saferide (feat Firefox AK) - Long Lost Penpal

So, we are going back to Scandinavia again for these first two tunes. Remember a couple weeks ago when I was listening to Montt Mardié and the song Pretenders they did with Hello Saferide? I meant to champion Hello Saferide the following week, but I got sidetracked by a Pop attack- and we all know how painful that can be. Hello Saferide are a Swedish Indie-Pop group with radio presenter Annika Norlin on lead vocals. Much like MM, you can’t dance to their music but it is achingly beautiful. Kind of a storytelling style, with songs like, Long Lost Penpal or Highschool Stalker, that sound great when you’re cooking, in the shower, or just in the mood for a soft and soothing atmosphere. Best line: "Damn, I wish I was a lesbian, so I could fall in love with you."

Currently on tour in Brazil (of all places!) with former band member Maia Hirasawa, who has a great single, And I Found this Boy.

3. Husky Rescue - Nightless Night

Okay, so the album, Ghost is Not Real, has been out long enough to have a baby, but I still like it. I’ve had it in my CD book for months, intending to play it at almost every event I’ve spun at, but keep forgetting. I think the name Husky Rescue just doesn’t catch my eye when I’m fishing for the next song to play- it sounds like some sorta manly drain-cleaner or something. But unlike their northern brethren, this Finish fivesome are very danceable, and lead singer Reeta-Leena Korhola is pretty easy on the eyes.
Note to self: Next summer- Finland, Sweden, vaycay action.

4. Róisín Murphy - ModernTiming

Formerly half of the duo Moloko, you may have heard her doing lead vocals for Boris Dlugosch’s hit single, "Never Enough," from this past spring, or from the song "Ruby Blue" that was on the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack. ModernTiming is a download-only single that is somehow not on the upcoming release (October) of her second album, Overpowered. Don’t know where I found it or I would tell you.

5. theStart - Fix

Tough call for me between The Smiths and The Chameleons and Joy Division and New Order. I've seen the Smiths, Chameleons and NO live and they were all awesome. Never saw Joy Division. I wish.

I have to go with New Order, just slightly over The Chameleons. NO just have too many great songs. Ceremony, Regret, Temptation, Dreams Never End, Run, Age of Consent, Everything's Gone Green, and more. The other three bands just didn't put out that much music.

But if Ian Curtis hadn't committed suicide...

1. Montt Mardié & Hello Saferide - Pretenders

Who knows where I found this one. Between the Internet, iTunes, MySpace and friends, I’ve found more great new music in the last six months than I have in the last six years. Sometimes I don’t trust my own taste though. I hate to say it but I actually bought the first CD from Matchbox Twenty - what was I thinking? I can’t even justify that by saying it was a guilty pleasure! But I think I’m okay with this one.

Anyway, back to Montt Mardié, the solo creation of Swedish 80’s music obsessive David Pagmar. How do you not like a guy that lists his influences as: Genesis, Burt Bacharach, the cure, John Coltrane, Temptations, Joy Division, Sinatra, Miles Davis, Paul McCartney, Jay-Z, Duran Duran and Elvis! And what is the dealio with the Swedish Pop movement all of a sudden? The Sounds, The Hives, Sahara Hotnights, The Ark, September, and of course, these guys...

That country is crankin’ out some great stuff.

"Pretenders" is one of those songs where I could tell in the first five seconds that I was going to love it. It’s soft and quiet and so f’ing beautiful that it just breaks my heart every time I hear it. Unfortunately he took it off of his MySpace page recently, but I guess you can listen to the thirty seconds of it on iTunes if you’re interested. Regardless, listen to "Pretenders" before you try the rest of his stuff because it gets progressively weirder and weirder. His voice, when he sings in a very high register, doesn’t really fit his look/s.

2. Blaqk Audio - Stiff Kittens

Okay, okay, but I’ve never been a fan of AFI (I can’t even name one of their songs) and this song reeks of Pop excess with a dash of Industrial to try and make it legit, but even if I do know that it’s from the two guys in that band, it just flat out rocks! When I played it ten days ago at Pop Roxx it made me want to hurt someone- in a good way, of course.

3. Marsheaux - Dream of a Disco

Another find from Daniel. Known so far for their covers- like the Lightning Seeds’ "Pure", When In Rome’s "The Promise" (played it at PR too) and Popcorn, but I like their original stuff even better. Dream of a Disco is my favorite so far. Haven’t been able to find their latest album in a local store, but I’m looking hard and fast. Gotta have it soon.

A Glam-infused dance party broke out at SOMETHING on Friday night. The ‘80s room was rocking too. Lots of new faces, which were nice to see as some of the regulars couldn’t make it for one reason or another- it’s a summertime thing. The second room decor keeps improving, which is cool. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s kinda like dancing in the first-class lounge area of an airplane that just crashed (if you can imagine that), complete with lights from the rescue planes flashing past the cabin windows and first-class seating all around. It was great to hear Brian Raffi spin again. The set list was left behind unfortunately. I’ll try to recover it in the next few days and post the set lists.

In the main bar we Glam-ed it up all night and had a blast. There’s something about Glam music plus booze plus dancing that always makes for a lot of happy, smiling people. I’m really surprised there aren’t any regular Glam clubs going in the City. A riot nearly broke out when I turned off Velvet Goldmine before it was over at 2am. Man, people were into that movie.

We all had a great time. Great job by the other two guest DJ’s too: The Melting Girl and Daniel Skellington. Thanks also to everyone who came out and supported us- and especially to all of you who wore something shiny! We’ll see you next month on the second Friday at ReTox.

SSF360 Film+Club, the San Francisco Film Society’s monthly social screening series, is back at Mezzanine Monday, August 20, with the new Daft Punk sci-fi film Electroma, written and directed by Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. After the film, stick around for the infectious beats of Riot in Belgium, the Bang Gang DJs, Dandi Wind and Richie Panic & Jefrodisiac.

In Electroma, Peter Hurteau and Michael Reich star as Hero Robot #1 and Hero Robot #2, two androids clad in motorcycle helmets. The two drive through the desert en route to Inyo County, California, where the entire population, regardless of age, dresses in identical attire. Upon arrival in the town, the two enter a scientific facility where experimenters pour hot latex over their helmets to make nightmarish flesh-covered masks that infuriate town residents. The robots then embark on a lengthy trek across an endless expanse of salt flats.

Okay. Here’s a little time killer for those of you at work with nothing better to do.

15 SONGS-
What does the music that you listen to reveal about you?

Okay. Here are the fifteen that came up on my iPod.

01. Veto Silver - Stay Young, Stay Beautiful
Probably the first song I ever downloaded. Love this song. Championed it for a while- meaning I played it at clubs and even slipped it in one time at NWC because it sounds so ‘80s. I kept looking for their debut album and then was shocked to find out they had broken up. Too bad. Great song.

02. Nick Gilder - Hot Child In The City
On here from one of my sets at DECADE. Always loved this song. Good ‘70s Power Pop.

03. Moby - Extreme Ways
Plays over the credits at the end of The Bourne Identity. It’s right after Jason finds Marie at a scooter rental shop/cafe that she has opened in Greece on the island of Mykonos- which is my dream! So it always makes me think of that.

04. Madonna - Love Don't Live Here Anymore
This was my theme song for a while recently. My favorite Madonna song.

05. Talk Talk - Such A Shame
My friend Chrissy asked me to make her a CD of ‘80s songs that I thought she didn’t know- this was one of them.

06. Interpol - Leif Erikson
Great track off of the best debut album of this decade, so far.

07. Edison Lighthouse - Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)
Pure ‘60s Pop- I’m a sucker for it! This one always makes me smile.

08. Cat Stevens - Here Comes My Baby
From the Rushmore soundtrack. Love, love, love, that movie!

09. Echo & The Bunnymen - Viliers Terrace - Live At The Fillmore 12/5/05
Went to this concert and when I saw the CD I had to buy it for a friend. I think they did a series of live CD's from different venues from this tour ‘cause I’ve seen a couple of others too.

10. Elton John - Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
When I was a kid, I had a weird fascination with NYC. Don’t know why. I must have lived or died there in a former life. Loved this song for the lyrics:

11. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone (Jason Nevins Rock da Club Edit)
Simply the best Pop song of this decade. I play it every chance I get at a club. Always gets a good reaction and I never get tired of this one.

12. The Blue Nile - Seven A.M.
From"Hats", my all-time favorite album.

Every single time I'm near you"

13. Elvis Presley - Can’t Help Falling In Love
Often I think about the power of music, and which songs I would play if my life had a soundtrack. Sometimes it does. For a while I was thinking about and collecting songs for a first dance at a wedding. You know, like, "At Last", "Take My Breath Away", "In Your Eyes", "Always and Forever", "You're My First, My Last, My Everything". Anyway, that’s why this song is on here. It was one of those.

14. Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up
I just like this song. Definitely a guilty pleasure. I’ve never had the nerve to play it at NWC. Maybe this Saturday?

15. Duran Duran - Salt in the Rainbow
My friend Mizz Viva blogged about this song. I didn’t know it and she was nice enough to send it to me. I really like it.

What I’m listening to this week…7/25/07

1. It’s July and nothing beats driving fast with all the windows in the car rolled down (or the top down - man, I miss my little 914!) on a hot summer night and a great song cranked up on the stereo. There’s something about the song "All Wrong" by Black Kites that makes me want to listen to it as loud as possible. Soon as it comes on I’m reaching for the volume knob and turning it clockwise, hard.

They remind me a lot of someone, but I won’t say who it is so it doesn’t influence you. See if we agree and tell me who it makes you think of.

3. Love of Diagrams - The Pyramid.
Some good guitar-driven Alternative that you can dance to. A bangin’ bass line with a The Edge-influenced guitar sound. I played it at Shadowplay last Friday and everyone seemed to like it. It’s always a good sign when someone comes up to the DJ booth to ask, "Who is this?!?

4. The Bird and the Bee - Again and Again
This band and this song keep making my list. I saw them last week at The Independent and they were great. For some reason it was decided that they were going to have a seated show. Big mistake! And they didn’t pack the tables in very tightly so there were a lot of people, myself included, who were standing around the outside. Dumb! I thought it was just going to be the duo of Greg Kurstin and Inara George, but after the first song they brought out a full band. Inara has a great voice and a winning personality too. She’s lovely!
Apparently this song was used on an episode of Grey's Anatomy, but I don’t hold that against it because I’ve never seen the show.

5. I had an ex who loved Another Brick by Fake. It came out in ‘85 and was more of a hit in Europe than here. I looked for the 12" for about a year in ’95, but never found it. I don’t buy records off of the Internet. I have to physically find something or I consider it cheating. It’s the search that makes it fun- although I often wonder how many years of my life have been spent looking through old records!
It took me five years to find a 12" of Voyage Voyage by Desireless, but, oh the joy when I finally did! I thought I was dreaming. Then, of course, I found another one a week later. Anyway, eventually DJ John took pity on me and gave me a copy of Another Brick that he found at a yard sale for $1. I play it once in awhile at NWC. I ran across the following video on YouTube recently and now the hunt is on to find this song.

The Verve Reform

After disbanding in 1999, The Verve have announced they have returned to the studio and will be playing a series of UK lives dates in November.

In a surprise and very succinct statement from the band’s representatives to Xfm, its been revealed that the original full line up of The Verve - Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones and Pete Salisbury – have reformed and were back recording together in a London studio last week.

This first session will be followed by a summer break, after which they will return to the studio to complete their next album, which will be the band’s first since the release of the legendary ‘Urban Hymns’ back in 1997.

The only member of the band who isn’t involved is Simon Tong, who joined the group in 1996 to replace Nick McCabe after he left the band (only to return six months later). Tong now plays with The Good The Bad & The Queen.

The Verve will also return to the live arena this November, playing six shows in the UK. Tickets for all the shows go on sale on Friday July 6.

The Verve’s full tour dates are:

SF360 Film+Club returns to Mezzanine on Tuesday, June 19, showcasing a new take on MACBETH directed by Geoffrey Wright. And after the film, DJ Skip from New Wave City will spin from his collection of the best New Wave, 90’s, and Now dance music. As for the film, which played at the Toronto International Film Festival, it’s violent and sexy with a kick-ass soundtrack, and re-imagines Shakespeare's classic in the underworld of present-day Melbourne. As one astute Australian journalist noted, the film is "brash, bawdy, bombastic and dripping with black blood."

Doors will open at 7pm, film starts at 7:30pm, and there will be complimentary Damrak gin and Absente cocktails and tastings from 7-8pm. Early birds get $5 tix instead of the $8 door price with an RSVP to info@SF360.org.

In Wright's film, Macbeth, a loyal henchman to his crime boss, Duncan, is told by teenage witches that he will one day assume great power. Driven by their prophecy, he plots with his wife to kill Duncan, and takes the leadership of the gang for himself. Maintaining his power will require more murders and violence, finally driving his surviving enemies to unite and destroy him.

Once again an excellent night at the ReTox Lounge. It was great to hear DJ Dangerous Dan spin something besides 80’s, and as usual, DJ Donimo just ripped it up and had everyone dancing. The SOMETHING July event will feature the debut of the spacious downstairs dance room at ReTox, which should be very interesting. It reminds me of the old Underground space (not to be confused with Underground SF). We’ll have DJ’s upstairs and down, and that should eliminate the overcrowded dance floor problem. Already lined up as guest DJ’s are Miz Margo and Starr - with a rumor of an appearance by the legendary Brian Raffi.
Remember that SOMETHING happens on the second Friday of the month.

Laura Veirs and Saltbreakers last night at Du Nord

My string of seeing really good concerts continued last night with Laura Veirs and Saltbreakers at Cafe Du Nord. I haven’t seen a bad show since Bloc Party at the Design Center. Laura Veirs was awesome! She doesn’t have a great voice, but she doesn’t hide behind their sound either because she is the sound. Very confident stage presence. Totally unpretentious, she won me over with the first two chords of their opening song. And she rocked her guitar hard too. Excellent live band for a small venue like Du Nord. When they come back to town, be sure to see them.

PATRICK Wolf and No Bra last night at Du Nord (5/22)

I’ve been really lucky recently to have seen some great live shows: Bitter:Sweet at The Independent, Peter Bjorn & John with Fujiya & Miyagi at Bimbo’s, and then last night, Patrick Wolf and No Bra at Café Du Nord.

No Bra opened and I don’t know much about her/them. I thought it was a duo, but she performed solo backed by recorded tracks. I can’t remember the last time an opening act made me stand transfixed and watch, but No Bra certainly did. Performing topless with a pair of hotpants/panties, she sang/spoke her way through about six numbers, highlighted by the song Munchausen.

Headliner Patrick Wolf was fun, funny, flamboyant and fabulous. He is very talented and mesmerizing as he commands the stage and your attention. Absolutely striking in appearance and voice, his performance was almost like watching a deleted scene from Velvet Goldmine. He took a lot of risks last night, both in an impromptu version of Danny Boy, and when he nicked an American flag from the Swedish American Hall upstairs and declared himself an American citizen on stage. One of the most interesting and different shows I’ve seen in a long, long, time.

Peter Bjorn & John last night!

Saw a great show last night at Bimbo’s. Peter Bjorn & John, with Fujiya & Miyagi opening. I love going to Bimbo’s. That venue and the Great American Music Hall are my two favorite places to see a show. There’s just something about the decor of those buildings that classes up any show. And it’s easy to get up close to the stage at Bimbo’s too. We went to the bar twice between acts and didn’t have any trouble getting back up front.

I knew nothing of Fujiya & Miyagi before the show, and I was very impressed. They had an amazing sound. Three guys playing over some recorded tracks with nice three-part harmonies, just beautiful orchestration, and cool beats too. I’m running to Amoeba today to buy whatever I can find from them.

And Peter Bjorn & John were awesome. Again, just three guys making an incredible sound. They changed every single song that they played, from the album version, to either a totally stripped down version ("Amsterdam"), or a rocker version ("Up Against the Wall"), or just a different arrangement ("Young Folks"). And they did it without being annoying or disappointing. It was obvious that they wanted to rock a little harder in person and just have fun. And boy did they.

They appeared to be completely comfortable on stage as they talked and joked with the audience. Peter Morén has a unique voice and he seemed to be very humble and thankful to be playing to an audience. He laughed and was obviously embarrassed when he screwed up the lyrics halfway through "Young Folks". If you ever have a chance to see them live, don’t hesitate. I’ll be there, up in the front.

This is the Modern World

So, Tuesday I get a message on the SOMETHING MySpace page from a band I've never heard of called The Hourly Radio. Now, I've been deluged with messages from unknown bands since starting that page. It's a common thing on MySpace. But this time it had a direct comment and an offer that I couldn't refuse.

Seems one of their friends had come to a SOMETHING event and really liked it and thought that The Hourly Radio should send me something of theirs to play. So they offered to send me some vinyl - after checking if I do indeed play vinyl - to which the answer is "Yes!" 'cause any self-respecting DJ plays vinyl. I checked out their MySpace page and I liked everything that I heard, so I replied that I liked their stuff and said, sure, send me something.

Well, yesterday in the mail I get a package with a 7" single (that's a vinyl record that used to be called a 45, for you kids out there), and a full length CD, "History Will Never Hold Me", and a band sticker. Too cool!

I like it a lot. I'll play it for sure at the next SOMETHING- maybe even tonight at Shadowplay.

What I'm listening to this week- 5/4/07

I’m into some singles this week. I’ve been playing "Don’t Lose Yourself by Laura Veirs and Saltbreakers since it came out in March. It’s a little more in the Electronic-Pop vein that I’m into now than her usual fare and I like it a lot. I was excited to see she is playing Café du Nord in June. I’ve got two tickets and I need a date- wanna go?

My other new discovery (for me) is Alexkid. Don’t know anything about the band (they might be from France) but love the singles Come With Me from the 2003 album "Mint" and Nightshade from "Caracol" released late last year. I think I’ll pair one of those with Le Mobilier from Rinocerose at the next SOMETHING for a little French Electro set.

And then local guy Kaskade has a track called 4am which I keep going back to. Not sure if I would like the rest of the album from what I’ve listened to- a little too Disco/House for me, but 4am is really pretty and dancey.

The problem with having SOMETHING only once a month is I’m going to have about 400 songs that I want to play.

What I'm listening to this week - 4/26/07

The Arctic Monkeys new album, "Favourite Worst Nightmare", just came out this week – love it!

And I still can’t get The Rakes – "Ten New Messages" out of my 5-disc CD deck. My new all-time-favorite-single-this-week off of that album is, "We Danced Together".

Also really like the self-titled album by The Bird and the Bee, which came out late last year. A beautiful vocal combined with Electronica kinda humanizes it, for me anyway. And I still love their single, "Fucking Boyfriend", from last summer.

I know I’m not supposed to like it, but the new release from Melanie C, "This Time", is actually quite good. I think Pop Electronic is my new favorite genre.

Still wearing out "Back to Black" from Amy Winehouse, and "Writer’s Block" from Peter Bjorn and John- can’t wait to see them at Bimbo’s next month.

The second SOMETHING happened last Friday night, April 13th, and it was even better than the first one. Not as packed this time, which was nice, as there was a little more room to dance. Seems like the first event attracted a lot of curious people who wanted to see what SOMETHING was about, but this time people came (or came back) because they knew what to expect and that brought out a lot of people that we know. Some amazing sets by The Melting Girl, Donimo, Tomas Diablo, and of course, me! I’ve never had so many people come up to me in the DJ booth, whether it was an old song or a new one, and say, "Wow, I love this song!" Guess it was a Friday the 13th kinda thing.

My "new" find this week is the album "Night on Fire" by VHS or Beta. I can't believe
this was released almost three years ago. Am I the only one who never heard anything
off of this album until now? It's just great. Compares to Interpol's first, IMHO, where every track
is good. Sometimes I think they sound like Franz Ferdinand and other times you would
swear you were listening to the cure. Track #10, "Irreversible", is an instrumental, but it's
one of those turn it up really loud and drive really fast songs. Love it!

Expect to hear at least one track this Friday.

Did you hear SOMETHING? Set lists from event #1

WOW! SOMETHING totally rocked on Friday night! I was a little worried that people wouldn’t be able to find the place, but boy they sure did. I had picked out a number of attendees that I was going to be happy with for the whole night, and we had more than that many people before 10pm (maybe because it was free before 10?). Cool! My only complaint was that people didn’t start dancing until about 11pm. It was like a high school dance where everyone stands around until one brave couple starts dancing and then everyone joins in. Same thing Friday night, but once they got started the whole bar was dancing.

Here’s a quote from an email that Tomas sent me the next day-
"We had much fun, although it was WAY too crowded from about 10:30 to midnight."

Indeed, by midnight the place was packed. And speaking of the place, I give Retox two thumbs up. It’s just the right size and comfy cozy and in the middle of nowhere so there aren’t any noise problems. That means they can leave the doors open for a nice airflow and not have to worry about the neighbors complaining. That was great because there’s a door right behind the DJ area so it was cool all night. They serve strong drinks and you get them fast too, if you know what I mean. I had a great time. I can’t remember when I’ve danced so much.

What was the only bad thing that happened? The Melting Girl totally melted. She was way too sick to spin, but promises to make it up to everyone at the next SOMETHING. And when, you’re probably asking yourself, is the next SOMETHING? Why, it is Friday the 13th of April, of course! Maybe you’ll get lucky at SOMETHING!

What I’m listening to this week…

I’m really digging two releases that came out last week-
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
and
The Rakes - Ten New Messages.

It’s always interesting to see how a band follows up a great first album. I’m not ready to pronounce this new release "great" yet, but I think producer James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem does prove that he is going to be around for awhile. I like "Watch the Tapes", which has that "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House" feel to it, and "Someone Great", which is really pretty and synthy.

I was playing "Retreat" from The Rakes in clubs about a year and a half ago when no one else was. Then about a year later, I heard it everywhere. It still gets me out on the dance floor, so that’s not so bad. Stand out tracks from the new one (also a sophomore release) are "We Danced Together" and "The World Was a Mess But His Hair Was Perfect". Great song titles on this one, including, "When Tom Cruise Cries".

I’m also wearing out Back to Black from Amy Winehouse, and Writer’s Block from Peter Bjorn and John.
