"Ohio State University researchers found that mice kept in a lighted room 24 hours a day had more depressive symptoms than mice that had a normal day-night cycle. The study also found that mice that lived in a constantly lit room, but could take refuge in a dark tube when they desired, had fewer depressive symptoms than mice that couldn't get away from the 24-hour light."

Re: Constant Light Linked to Symptoms of Depression
Mon, October 26, 2009 - 8:28 AMthis seems like common sense.
Most animals and humans live in 24 hour days with alternated time s of light and dark -

Mon, October 26, 2009 - 4:49 PMYeah, this is why they keep the lights on all the time at Guantanamo... -

Re: Constant Light Linked to Symptoms of Depression
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 2:41 AMI'm not sure that those results carry over in a straightforward manner to humans; mice are after all prey, and being out in the open without refuge is probably not going to do their anxiety levels much good. -

Re: Constant Light Linked to Symptoms of Depression
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 7:16 AMWe were prey for quite a bit of our history out there on the savannah. We were both prey *and* predator, true, but still, it's likely it's reflected in our genome. -

Re: Constant Light Linked to Symptoms of Depression
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 10:10 AMHeh, we're still prey a lot of the time. Sometimes of other animals and sometimes of each other. -

Re: Constant Light Linked to Symptoms of Depression
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 7:42 PMGood point - I was only thinking in terms of *food* prey, as in watch out for the sabre-tooth. But yes, I guess, that too is still true of us in both ways. (Although the "fava beans and a nice chianti" one is quite rare. Oops - "quite rare" - bad food pun. Better stop while we're ahead.)

Re: Constant Light Linked to Symptoms of Depression
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 10:09 AMDisruption of circadian rhythms is linked to depression in humans (though the mechanisms are still being researched, which is why studies like this are done as a means to test theories). At least in humans, constant darkness would also cause depression and, obviously, SAD would be an example of this. Both constant light and dark are used to torture and break down people's psyches, as is isolation and all other sorts of sensory assaults and cruelty. Some of the stuff some humans can do to other humans really is mind boggling!

Re: Constant Light Linked to Symptoms of Depression
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 4:22 PMAh, c'mon, we're human beings here.
There's NO WAY that we're linked to photo periodic cycles like almost every other animal, plant, or living organism on the planet, we're so like, totally past that, it's like, uh, neolithic or something, yeah, that's it.
