Need a place to camp!

I'm looking for a nice place to camp, preferably in Missouri, close-ish to Columbia.
We'd like to be near a swimming hole, be able to bring our dogs (and let them be free, keeping in mind that they don't go far), and be kind of private (not too many people around.......ahhh bad memories of the drunken red-neck who played the "Deliverance" theme on his banjo all night......creepy).
We've been to and like Camp Zoe (when it's NOT Shwagstock), but a bigger swimming hole would be nice.
Any tips?

This isn't exactly what you're looking for, but I would check out Cooper's Landing... I've never personally camped there but I know people who have and you're right on the river. I'm not sure if there is swimming there or not...

I've been down to Cooper's, to see shows and what not.
I don't think it'd be safe to swim there :)

I've seen people in the river but....I wouldn't do it. lol

Sorry Sprout. I've racked my brain for swimming/dog friendly/camping/close to CoMo... not really anything like that in one area. There's Finger Lakes if you can handle the ATV's and dirt bikes. There's a designated swimming area, but I was never fond of it. Can't let your dogs roam though. There's Three Creeks...I don't think there's really a swimming area per se. Walk in camping is allowed/no amenities. Pets must be leashed.

There are swimming areas, no camping
        Camping, no swimming
Most places are not free-dog run areas.

Capt.TLC has some acreage on the Gasconade, but it's not near Columbia (about 90 minutes away).

*FD*, how about that new campground down in Huntsdale? Lots of acreage, but I don't know the policy on dogs......and again, it's Missouri River swimming......which sucks.

The campground in Huntsdale is an open field I think. If it's the one I'm thinking of down the road from Katfish Katy's. And yeah, it's on the river.
After re-reading it, I guess they're just looking for a place in Missouri with good swimming and quiet and dog friendly. I'll keep thinking. Show-Me Mike has got a campground down on a river. He's actually always looking for help too...I'll see if I can find more info out on that too.

I was just camping on Capt. TLC's land. Beautiful place near Linn, but I never made it down to the river since it was flooded. He's dog friendly too.
And yeah, there's Ozark Avalon. They have some dog restrictions, but maybe it's only when it's a camp weekend.

Ozark Avalon is a campground when there's nothing else happening there, and there's a nice big swimming hole. while the basic policy on dogs is the same as everywhere else, if they truly stay close by it probably won't be a problem.

I'd thought about OA, just worried about the dog issue. My dog doesn't go far, and I don't think my friend's would either.
Other than that, OA seems about perfect!

If you go on a weekend when no one else is there, dog would not be an issue. This weekend, the 4th, is full up, but check out the website or give them a call about the weekend after, for example. The thing on dogs is mainly whether or not they are badly behaved. Were you to go this weekend, I'm sure you'd see several people there with their dogs running without leashes, but also sticking quite close to their humans. It's when they start chasing the wildlife or starting fights or otherwise misbehaving. And now Rose has a dog herself, that big white one that wandered around IF now and then.
