Hi there everyone!
I'm thinking about taking my troupe out to a competition either late this year or sometime next year. I've been wandering around Google trying to get an idea of which one is the best . . . and I'm not having any luck, so now to solicit your collective advice!
Things I'm considering:
I'm not concerned about going somewhere close - we're up for travel.
Should have good categories - must include professional soloist and troupe divisions.
Attendance - the more people there, the better! Good, well-known titles are nice too - always good for advertising.
I'd like to go to one of the bigger ones, but I'm not sure if the more well known ones are bigger because they are better, or just because they are older.
Judges should be well rounded, and the scoring should make sense/be fair.
Prizes! We like trophies and tiaras. ^_^ But that's lowest on the list.
I'm leaning towards Bellydancer of The Universe or Belly Dance Nationals. But I'm also considering Arabesque Bellydance Competition and Wiggles of The West.
Any information you have would be excellent. I'd mostly like to hear from those who have attended these competitions and can recommend them based on experience, but any input you have would be appreciated. ^_^
Thanks in advance!

Re: Compititions - Which do you recomend?
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 7:56 AMBelly Dancer USA
Belly Dancer of the Year
and next year rumor has it Double Crown will be back...
all good titles to have along with ones already mentioned... as for attendance.. you never really know - economy and all. For pro categories.. so many of the contests make this Sunday night.. and I think it is to get people into watch the whole day - but a lot of people leave because they have to travel back home because MONDAY...and with so many talking about the economy.. not sure how this yea will evolve..
I have been to the 3 I mentioned and Wiggle of the West and a couple smaller ones and so far all have been worth it. Go for the growth - not the title, you can get something out of anything with with the right perspective at the start.
good luck and see you at a contest..[i am at BDoY, BDUSA and Wiggle's this year]

Re: Compititions - Which do you recomend?
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 11:34 PMThanks for your recommendations!
True, I have been worried about the economy. Although I have noticed that what people DO spend money on tend to be more wholesome and meaningful and less frivolous. And what could be more wholesome than bellydance? That has been what I have noticed, at least.
Hope to see you there! I'm auditioning with my mother for America's Got Talent this year - so no telling how fr that might go! It will probably be next year before I can attend a competition, but I hope to see you there Devi!
Thanks again,

Re: Compititions - Which do you recomend?
Mon, July 6, 2009 - 10:15 AMDon't know what style of belly dance y'all are doing, but I know Wiggles winners have gone on to be pretty big names in tribal style, such as BDSS Kami Liddle, and UNMATA. Same goes for Hips of Fury- Steven Eggers, TABU, and Heather Shoopman all benefited from their exposure at HoF. -
