Judging:
Here's an exercise that will help you plan your contest performance.
You should *ALWAYS* ask who is judging before you enter a contest.
If your director says I can't tell you, ask who judged previously or
what the selection process is.
Once you know, you will certianly have your own opinion.
But let's take an opportunity to discuss it here,
Please post your opinions here of why a
CONTEST HOSTESS
would make a good judge or a not so good judge.

Re: CONTEST HOSTESS doing double duty as a judge
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 8:41 AMHm... I have never asked who the judges are and I have never been asked who the judges are. I did have plans to double duty as hostess and judge.. but ended up too busy and didn't judge.
IMO the most important criteria for a judge is- Can this person be trusted to make a fair and honest evaluation of this individuals dance for this specific performance without prejudice?

Re: CONTEST HOSTESS doing double duty as a judge
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 1:00 PMIn general, I don't think it's a good idea for the sponsor to judge. It's not practical. There is just too much to do. I think it's better for the contest if the sponsor stays out of the judging too. I think it just looks more impartial. That said, I stepped in once as a substitute judge for one category where the scheduled judge had a former student in that category. So, I've always been scheduled as a back up judge when I have sponsored. I think you have to have at least one for situations like that, but it's not the ideal situation.

Re: CONTEST HOSTESS doing double duty as a judge
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 2:17 PMIn the scenario where a judge was not allowed to score every competitor, that judges scores would be pulled from the entire category. You either trust your judges to score fairly and accurately or you don't.
Hostesses, competitors, audience members, etc should not dictate who judges a specific competitor within a category.
I trust all of my judges to score fairly whether or not they have a student in the category. Most times though.... the judge will remove themselves. I've removed myself and not judged an entire category because my student was competing. -

Re: CONTEST HOSTESS doing double duty as a judge
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 4:03 PMRight. That's what happened in this case. The judge was no longer teaching this person. She didn't know that she was competing until the day of. She excused herself, which I think is the appropriate thing to do.
