LOCAL TEACHERS as judges

Judging:

Here's an exercise that will help you plan your contest performance.
You should *ALWAYS* ask who is judging before you enter a contest.
If your director says I can't tell you, ask who judged previously or
what the selection process is.

Once you know, you will certianly have your own opinion.

But let's take an opportunity to discuss it here,
Please post your opinions here of why a

FORMER CONTEST WINNER

would make a good judge or a not so good judge.

I don't like the idea of local teachers as judges unless it's a local contest. I think the appearance of bias is too great. I think it would discourage out of towners from coming and feeling like they got a fair shake. I think it would appear that the judges are judging their own students and favoring them over others. This may not be true, but I think the appearance of bias is as bad for the contest as bias itself.

I think this could go etiher way. Maybe you have some teachers that would favor their students, but at the same time they could judge them more harshly. Local teachers know what local dancers are capable of and therefore may judge a performance based on their normal skill level. However, if you get a good one it shouldn't matter; and I do believe most dancers/teachers would make great judges!

I think this is a tough one. It's easy to point the finger of bias in a way that would benefit the dancer, but I would agree with Malia that if the judge has seen the dancer over the years, they may compare the competition performance to an ideal of what they believe they know a dancer CAN do. If a dancer is nervous or a bit off, that will be more apparent to someone who has been watching them dance in the local community rather than someone who might be seeing that dancer perform for the first time.

Does anyone know what they do in other performance based competitions, like skating or gymnastics? I used to compete as a gymnast when I was in elementary school, but I have no idea what it takes to become a judge at the national level.......
