Sat, January 3, 2009 - 8:19 AMooops.. just noticed the type... VASHTI..[sorry]
And i agree with Angela - it is a total package you are needing. I have seen all styles win at different comps. Kami Liddle has won wiggle's..
Try going on YouTube and searching the Double Crown video posts and I think Zaina has a history page link on her site [at least she used to]

Re: Double Crown question
Fri, January 2, 2009 - 9:14 PMI do not believe one style is looked on or given higher scores over another style, But congruency to the style that you are dancing is important. In example, your wearing an Egyptian costume and your dancing Egyptian style but your music set is Turkish. That could cost you points. So that is just a small part on what your being scored on. Keep in mind your panel of judges and their specialties in belly dance will be mixed. I have never seen a panel soley picked in one particular style. IE all judges taught and dance Egyptian.
Now I've heard some people say that this doesn't matter, but I've been judged and have had comments written on my score sheets that my expressions did not portray the style I was dancing. Saying my expressions were more stoic to tribal dance and they did not fit well with my Egyptian presentation.
I will go out on a limb and say one style is not given greater preference over another.

Re: Double Crown question
Sat, January 3, 2009 - 1:00 PMI judged DC when it was in Portland and we did not give any preferance to one style. I would not expect Vasti to have changed that at all. Your costume, music, dance style, and yes even expressions should fit together to create what Devi calls the whole package.
Wiggles of the West does not give preferance to one style over others, except in a category like Tribal Fusion Solo or Tribal Fusion Ensemble, which is obvious. Like Devi said Kami Liddle won Entertainer of the Year and Unmata won Ensemble.

Re: Double Crown question
Sun, January 4, 2009 - 12:45 PMthanks for the responses. I am just a bit nervous with so little information & never having competed at all. for regular shows, we always have to tailor everything to the audience. I have no idea what this 'audience' will expect. I did find 3 you tube videos, but one was for troupe.
Does anyone at least know what the time limits are?
oh well... patience... -

Double Crown Update
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 1:28 PMGreetings,
Many of you have wondered when the next announcement about The Double Crown Belly Dance Competition would come. I have received so many e-mails over the last year; inquiries as to the upcoming event dates, the DC's fate and so many well wishes and excitement about the 2010 event.
History: In 1993 I made the decision to produce my idea of a Belly Dance Competition. Hence, The Double Crown Belly Dance Competition saw its first event in 1994, produced to a packed house, with a stellar line-up of winners. Each year thereafter, The Double Crown grew; changing and evolving along the way to become what I am told by many, to be one of the most highly respected competitions for Belly Dancers available. With a foundation in honesty and integrity, sidelined by fun and frivolity, many had made The Double Crown one of their highlighted events of the year. I was just recently told by a competitor that she felt the Double Crown was "the" competition she aspired to compete in.
My staff, family and I produced and built the Double Crown from that very first year, through 2007. In 2008, The Double Crown was moved and successfully produced by Belly Dance Odyssey and held in Santa Cruz California. BDO however made the difficult decision as they downsized their activities to send The Double Crown back to me this last February and I have pondered the fate of the DC since.
It is with both a huge sense of accomplishment, wonderful memories and thanks to family and friends for years of support, and a great deal of sadness that I inform you I will no longer produce the Double Crown. The competition has been packaged and is now on the auction block, "for sale". While many may feel they can start their own competition, The Double Crown has achieved much success making it the ready product it is, tried and true, and on a solid foundation. All that is needed is the time and effort of another team as well as the integrity and intestinal fortitude required to make hard decisions, while at the same time have a great deal of fun.
I would be happy to remain on as a consultant, but at this time, with another production looming, iShimmy.com, The Belly Dancer Magazine's enormous success and so many other irons in the fire, it is no longer possible for me to produce this stellar event.
Please forward any inquires to zaina@zainahart.com
