Greetings,

Many of you have wondered when the next announcement about The Double Crown Belly Dance Competition would come. I have received so many e-mails over the last year; inquiries as to the upcoming event dates, the DC's fate and so many well wishes and excitement about the 2010 event.

History: In 1993 I made the decision to produce my idea of a Belly Dance Competition. Hence, The Double Crown Belly Dance Competition saw its first event in 1994, produced to a packed house, with a stellar line-up of winners. Each year thereafter, The Double Crown grew; changing and evolving along the way to become what I am told by many, to be one of the most highly respected competitions for Belly Dancers available. With a foundation in honesty and integrity, sidelined by fun and frivolity, many had made The Double Crown one of their highlighted events of the year. I was just recently told by a competitor that she felt the Double Crown was "the" competition she aspired to compete in.

My staff, family and I produced and built the Double Crown from that very first year, through 2007. In 2008, The Double Crown was moved and successfully produced by Belly Dance Odyssey and held in Santa Cruz California. BDO however made the difficult decision as they downsized their activities to send The Double Crown back to me this last February and I have pondered the fate of the DC since.

It is with both a huge sense of accomplishment, wonderful memories and thanks to family and friends for years of support, and a great deal of sadness that I inform you I will no longer produce the Double Crown. The competition has been packaged and is now on the auction block, "for sale". While many may feel they can start their own competition, The Double Crown has achieved much success making it the ready product it is, tried and true, and on a solid foundation. All that is needed is the time and effort of another team as well as the integrity and intestinal fortitude required to make hard decisions, while at the same time have a great deal of fun.

I would be happy to remain on as a consultant, but at this time, with another production looming, iShimmy.com, The Belly Dancer Magazine's enormous success and so many other irons in the fire, it is no longer possible for me to produce this stellar event.

Please forward any inquires to zaina@zainahart.com

Hi there everyone!
I'm thinking about taking my troupe out to a competition either late this year or sometime next year. I've been wandering around Google trying to get an idea of which one is the best . . . and I'm not having any luck, so now to solicit your collective advice!
Things I'm considering:
I'm not concerned about going somewhere close - we're up for travel.
Should have good categories - must include professional soloist and troupe divisions.
Attendance - the more people there, the better! Good, well-known titles are nice too - always good for advertising.
I'd like to go to one of the bigger ones, but I'm not sure if the more well known ones are bigger because they are better, or just because they are older.
Judges should be well rounded, and the scoring should make sense/be fair.
Prizes! We like trophies and tiaras. ^_^ But that's lowest on the list.

I'm leaning towards Bellydancer of The Universe or Belly Dance Nationals. But I'm also considering Arabesque Bellydance Competition and Wiggles of The West.

Any information you have would be excellent. I'd mostly like to hear from those who have attended these competitions and can recommend them based on experience, but any input you have would be appreciated. ^_^
Thanks in advance!

We just got a phone call closing Entertainer. Since not everyone has credit cards anymore, we took email and phone calls from contestants saying the check is in the mail. It is only fair.

We are taking submissions for the waiting list right now. If checks bounce or something, we will go right to the waiting list. If someone backs out, we will fill from the waiting list. We have had years where there were 6 people on the waiting list and everyone got in. We do not cash checks for the Waiting List until you get in. We refund all PayPal entries that don't get, after July 7th.

You can not sell your spot to anyone else.

We never take entries at the door. If fact if people are no shows or drop out after July 7th, we don't replace them. We will just have a smaller field.

We take half of the entries for the finals. If it is an odd number, we round up.

Yes, it is true, after a big meeting this weekend in Las Vegas we added a NEW category. We have long needed an inbetween category that would fill in the space between Rising Star and Entertainer. Hobbyist is for those of us who just love to dance.

The requirements are 4 or more years experience. You can not perform for money on a regular basis, advertise as a professional, or be a teacher. This category is for Non-professionals. Belly Dance music only. You can be retired from teaching or performing.

I am an example of a Hobbyist. I have lots of experience dancing. I haven't taught a dance class in years. But still love to perform at Haflas and such.

The benifits are the fun of competiting, the great feedback you get from our judges, and you get to share your dance.

I'm entering my first competition this August ( www.nebdc.com ). The time limit for my category is 9 minutes. The time limit for some of the other categories is 7 minutes. The songs that I'm finding that I love are 7-8 minutes. Yes, I could edit different pieces together, but I would prefer to dance to one song that has it all.

My question: Is it a faux pas to use music that does not take advantage of the full allotted time? As I said this is my first competition experience so I'm wondering about this. The site does say time limits are strict (of course!) but my music-too-short question remains... Your feedback is really appreciated!

Hello everyone!
On behalf of Lotus Niraja and The NDC, I want to thank you so much for your overwhelmingly positive response toward the new Belly Dance Nationals Competition (BDNC)! We are inspired by all the e-mails, calls and general feelings of goodwill we've received and all the suggestions we've gotten on how we can make this year's event a resounding success.

But, we are full and filling!

The registrations to compete in the BDNC 2009 have been pouring in. Right now, we are excited to find that so many have registered for the National Champion category that we may have to put a cap on it! There is now a waiting list available and registration is on a first-come/first-served basis for the National Champion category!

Please remember that the BDNC offers several exciting categories! Why just go for National Champion when you could go for National Masters Champion, Proptastic Dancer, or National Alternative/Fusion Soloist? Or why not sign up your entire troupe in one of our troupe categories? There are many ways for a dancer to express her/himself in the BDNC - we have made room for all!

We invite all of you to contact us with any questions or feedback. Reach out to us - we're always available. You can contact us through the Belly Dance Nationals Competition website (www.bellydancenationals.com), through our e-mail address: eventinfo@bellydancenationals.com or through our Marketing and Communcations Director, Makeda Maysá at makedamaysa@gmail.com.

We look forward to hearing from you and thank you so much for your interest in the BDNC!

INTRODUCING
The 2009 Belly Dance Nationals Competition!
Washington, D.C/MD Area!
November 21, 2009
Hosted at the brand new BWI Hilton at the Baltimore Washington International Airport!

Featuring Ahava, Ava Fleming, Tanya of Las Vegas, Oreet, Azhia, Lisa Zahiya, and many more!

Because the East Coast has fabulous mega-metropolitan cities such as New York City, Miami, and Washington, D.C., the organizers of the BDNC (who are city girls themselves!) saw a need to have a large scale competition right in their own backyard...the East Coast. The Jewel of the Nile is now The Belly Dance Nationals Competition! With the blessing of Alexandra Ahnide, founder of The Jewel of the Nile, we are keeping her traditions and going upscale. You, our honored guests have also spoken, providing enormous feedback, and
tips about what you want in a competition. So far, the response to the BDNC has been incredible, so we have to limit the amount of entries for each category. Competing or thinking about competing, pre-register now!

Our hope is that we will continue the wonderful event bequeathed to us by Alexandra with the class and professionalism you have come to expect from The NDC. The BDNC event planned for 2009 is going to be a spectacular event! We have been working hard to put together a glamorous event that will be run with integrity, ethics, and professionalism. As with the past Jewel of the Nile events...expect nothing but the best!

In celebration of our first year:
~The first ten registered contestants in will receive a free workshop
and two free All Day passes for the event. (Troupes count as one entry).

~We are gifting 25 Gala Show tickets! Just look for me or one of the
members of The NDC! Tell us you want your free ticket! The free
tickets will be limited edition, commemorative Gala Show tickets to
help celebrate the 2009 BDNC event!

My question(s) revolve around competitions(duh). When is the right time to consider entering a competition? Does it depend on the dancer, the length of time dancing, the skill...what?

Also, what kinds of things should one take into consideration when preparing, or thinking about entering a competition? Is there certain training or preparation that person should do? Are costumes important? Should a first-timer compete at a lower level, or in lower-level categories rather than the grand-prize category? [example: BDUC, $300 prize categories vs. $1000 prize categories...]

I'd like to sneak away from the fam at least to attend, but if I can attend I'd like to look at competing too. Does anyone know how the format is set up? If you are competing in one category, will that category be dealt with on one day, a couple hours each day, or do you have to be present for the entire 3 day event, all day everyday? are they pretty good at staying on schedule? Any other thoughts/advice/impressions for this competition?

Some of you may have heard that the East Coast Classic will not be running anymore. This is true, but do not fret! There are still some East Coast options.

Alexandra hosts Jewel of the Nile in NJ

I think Zabeth is still doing the Diva pageant in MA

New for 2009 is the NorthEast Belly Dance Competition, hosted by Khaleela in PA. It will be in September, so mark your calendars. If you are an East Coast Classic fan, the format will be similar. For more info on that email Khaleela at
khaleelabdancer@ aol.com or bookmark the website: www.nebdc.com. There is no info there yet, but keep checking back.

Also new for 2009 is the Wild & Crazy Contest hosted by moi. It will be a part of Habibi Holiday in July 2009. It's just one people's choice category. It's for the most creative and entertaining belly dance performance- troupe, duet or soloist. Details are still in the works for this one too, but you can see some preliminary info here: http://thebellydancetrainer.com/hh.html. I am hoping I can have all the details finalized by mid November.

choreography competition?

There seems to be a growing respect and need for stage choreography (a la Belly Dance Super Stars). I wanted to float the idea of sponsoring a choreography competition out there. A lot of you (all of you?) on this tribe compete, so what do you think of the idea?

If I did it, it would be as objective as possible, so there would be scoring criteria as there was when I sponsored the East Coast Classic (and as they continue to have). It wouldn't just be a panel of judges saying, "We like this one best." You'd have a score sheet beforehand to help you prepare for the competition. It would judge the elements common to any choreography such as space, energy, form, musicality, the look, the blend of skill level of the performers, appropriate costuming, as well as the use of things like contrast, repetition, cascades, expanding, contracting, tempo, etc. Of course not all pieces will use the same elements, but there whatever is used would be scored.

I think it would have to be separated by solo and group and beginner, intermediate and advanced, but I haven't thought too much about that. (Your thoughts would be appreciated). Any style could be entered- folklore, tribal, fusion, American style, Egyptian style, etc.

As in most dance competitions, contestants would get the judge's feedback on what was done well and what could be improved upon. And in fact, that should be the main focus of entering.

So what do you think? Are we "ready" for a choreography competition? I think there are three distinct talent areas in dance: performing, teaching and choreographing. We've established the performing arena. Are we ready to explore choreography as another area of "competition". (My goal is really to enhance what we have and acknowledge the talent that is out there rather than to establish "competition" among choreographers.)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,

It is with sadness and a heavy heart that I have to announce that The 13th Annual Wiggles of the West Belly Dance Contest has been canceled for this year.

We lost our space at Boomtown and none of the others are able to help us out. The ones we could fit into were booked for that time and others were too overly priced or the terms weren't appropriate for our event. Some just weren't big enough and we really don't want to downsize the event.

We will be back in 2009, please check the website, tribe and the yahoo groups periodically for more information.
For competitions with 7-10 minute time limits- is it normal to have a few shorter songs spliced together to make up the length, or is using a single, longer piece standard? (assuming, of course, that any splicing/editing etc. is done in a tasteful, professional manner!)
How long do contestants usually prepare, are there any tips for getting ready? knowing my schedule, I think a year should be sufficient time to get things polished, but I feel like I'm getting ready for a triathalon without my handy training chart...
