b) What should I absolutely NOT DO?
c) Any good tidbits to share?

which to choose for next year?

I’m looking to do a competition again, there is only one that I know of on the east coast, which I will do next year if they are still doing it, but I want to at least do one on the West coast. I live on the east coast so I have to save my pennies and choose the best one. So hypothetical question if you could only do one competition, and a fortuneteller told you could place in it or even win. Which would be your first and second choice?

Hey, this was a fun little exercise. I went on You tube and searched belly dance/bellydance, & contest/pageant.

It ran the gamut! From "okaaaay?" to "Now that's what I'm talking about!"

It's more fun for you to try the search yourself, but here's some links.

The judges for the MBC bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the panel and include expertise in the areas of Middle Eastern dance, music and culture as well as performing skill and presentation. Kimahri is delighted to expand this year's competition categories and be able to share this exciting experience with even more dancers.

Judging:

Here's an exercise that will help you plan your contest performance.
You should *ALWAYS* ask who is judging before you enter a contest.
If your director says I can't tell you, ask who judged previously or
what the selection process is.

Once you know, you will certianly have your own opinion.

But let's take an opportunity to discuss it here,
Please post your opinions here of why a

FORMER CONTEST WINNER

would make a good judge or a not so good judge.

Popular young dancer

would make a good judge or a not so good judge.

This is for a med sized staged show with a darkened audience, stage lighting and no spotlight.

My question from the perspective of both performer and/or audience member is..

What color would like to see used as a backdrop?

Or...

Would you prefer to see a theme with props etc..??
choreography competition?

There seems to be a growing respect and need for stage choreography (a la Belly Dance Super Stars). I wanted to float the idea of sponsoring a choreography competition out there. A lot of you (all of you?) on this tribe compete, so what do you think of the idea?

If I did it, it would be as objective as possible, so there would be scoring criteria as there was when I sponsored the East Coast Classic (and as they continue to have). It wouldn't just be a panel of judges saying, "We like this one best." You'd have a score sheet beforehand to help you prepare for the competition. It would judge the elements common to any choreography such as space, energy, form, musicality, the look, the blend of skill level of the performers, appropriate costuming, as well as the use of things like contrast, repetition, cascades, expanding, contracting, tempo, etc. Of course not all pieces will use the same elements, but there whatever is used would be scored.

I think it would have to be separated by solo and group and beginner, intermediate and advanced, but I haven't thought too much about that. (Your thoughts would be appreciated). Any style could be entered- folklore, tribal, fusion, American style, Egyptian style, etc.

As in most dance competitions, contestants would get the judge's feedback on what was done well and what could be improved upon. And in fact, that should be the main focus of entering.

So what do you think? Are we "ready" for a choreography competition? I think there are three distinct talent areas in dance: performing, teaching and choreographing. We've established the performing arena. Are we ready to explore choreography as another area of "competition". (My goal is really to enhance what we have and acknowledge the talent that is out there rather than to establish "competition" among choreographers.)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,
Wiggles of the West Contest canceled

It is with sadness and a heavy heart that I have to announce that The 13th Annual Wiggles of the West Belly Dance Contest has been canceled for this year.

We lost our space at Boomtown and none of the others are able to help us out. The ones we could fit into were booked for that time and others were too overly priced or the terms weren't appropriate for our event. Some just weren't big enough and we really don't want to downsize the event.

We will be back in 2009, please check the website, tribe and the yahoo groups periodically for more information.

I am thinking of looking at competitions for the '09 season, but I have a couple questions.
For competitions with 7-10 minute time limits- is it normal to have a few shorter songs spliced together to make up the length, or is using a single, longer piece standard? (assuming, of course, that any splicing/editing etc. is done in a tasteful, professional manner!)
How long do contestants usually prepare, are there any tips for getting ready? knowing my schedule, I think a year should be sufficient time to get things polished, but I feel like I'm getting ready for a triathalon without my handy training chart...

I'm not sure if this is okay here or not, but I'll post it to see. Most Competitions only sell you a copy of your own performance, but there was a time when you could buy videos of the whole contest. On ebay right now I am selling one of these tapes and their may be more later at http://stores.ebay.com/Designs-by-Janie It isn't the greatest video, because thelights on the lame messed with video camera, but you can see the dancing pretty good. This tape is of the 2001 Double Crown, when it was presented by both Zaina Hart & Mezdulene. You might want to take a look or bid even.

I've heard it features dancers from all over the Middle East, and like a reality show, they live together while the contest goes on.

Hey, just letting you all know that the East Coast Belly Dance Classic will return in 2008. I have found a person to take over the reins as sponsor whom I trust. It will be in Virginia Beach May 18-19, 2008 (I think those are the weekend dates).

In the meantime, you can still make it this year as a spectators to the 2007 event. It's in Virginia Beach May 19-20. For details go to http://eastcoastclassic.net. See ya there!

How many competitions do you all have up there?

Is it something almost every student expects to try someday?

It's uncanny how many members we have from those states, while none at all from others!

Alexandra

And yes, there is most likely a message in your box from me, even if you don't live anywhere near my competition in NJ!

Choreography Project for Middle Eastern Dance Troupe Competition 2007

Hey everyone,

If you're interested we have a troupe competition that we do every year. We just had our third competition with Mahmoud Reda of Cairo and Elena of NY judging and teaching. We have mpegs of the show at:

http://www.medancecertification.org/choreographyproject2007.html

Besides a trophy the grand prize winners receive an instructional dvd of the winning choreography. I shoot and edit it but the troupe owns it outright. While there are a lot of instructional dvds in our scene but I don't know of any troupe instructional dvds and we are trying to create a line of them. Troupes are really important in our scene and don't always receive the acknowlegement they deserve.

Here is a link to the 2005 winners dvd: http://www.medancecertification.org/Instructionaldvds.html I'm finishing the 2006 winners dvd and it will be debuted at Ya Halla Ya'All this weekend in Fort Worth.

I'm very proud of the fact that all forms of our dance are encouraged and the categories in our competiton are based on size rather then style. On our website you will see Tribal, Fusion Raks and Cab all honored.

I would like to say that I got into Bellydance back in 1981 drumming for my wife- then my girlfriend- Z-Helene. In those days we did not have styles like Cab, Tribal or Raks. Rather we defined the scene by the teachers involved. Bobby Farrah had his style, as did Elena and Serena. I'm glad that we now have styles like Trbal or Raks but I feel that we also have erected walls between the different styles and I personally feel that some of these walls should come down.

At the website you will see all styles and that's the way we like it!

Take care, Rick Fink

Troupe Costumes

Hello All~
This is the first year I will be taking my troupe to a competition. As a troupe, I allow my students to wear costumes that they are comfortable in. We don't match exactly, I just choose a color scheme for them and a general mood. I am worried that this may work against us in competition. I am wondering what other pros have to say? Will this be a distraction? I hate to "make them" get matching costumes, but I would hate to be docked points because of this.

Thanks for any input.

This week's submissions for the naming contest have been posted to my blog (Entries as of July 22nd). Only one more week to go, so if you've got a name that you think would work for my studio - send it in...
Remember, the winning entry receives $150 buckaroos (U.S. dollars).

I'm off to meet w/ a contractor to get a quote for installing the sprung floors in the dance area, as well as one or two other things I'd like done in the space. And then trying to hook up w/ Shannon who leads several drumming events in the area about teaching a weekly percussion for M.E. rythms at my studio.

Sooo many little details to wrap up...
Peace Out!

Why did we decide to finally give Wiggles of the West its own site? We thought it would be easier to find in search engines and such.

Naming contest

Not sure if this qualifies for a listing on this tribe - please forgive if not.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Whats in a name?
$150 Bucks, thats what!

Alrighty, everyone whose met me or checked out either of my pages (here on Tribes and on MySpace) knows how addicted to belly dance I've become. And also, it's no secret that (like many other dancers) I've considered opening my own studio - eventually.

Well, eventually is turning out to be NOW!
I've been crazy mad trying to get all the details and loose ends taken care of. Have gotten quite a lot done preparing to open (two inter-related) businesses. The first is the boutique side of things - and Funky Temple will be open for biz (prob) by end of July.
The studio side of the biz is where things are going ever sooo s l o w.
Read more about it in my blog entry Ever onward...
http://people.tribe.net/afc836a4-29e1-43dd-ad9a-f55939fa550a/blog/78f0f85b-c80d-40ed-ae7f-9e4f54f91eb1

And regarding the Naming Contest, if you could help me get the word out - I'd greatly appreciate it. I've also posted the info in my tribes blog and on several of the tribes I belong to.
The contest is open to everyone, and the winner wil be paid in U.S. dollars.

Thanks all!
~ Chandra ~

defending the title?

So what do you think about competitors defending the title? I know among my students it isn't done. If you won a category, you move up or move on to another contest. They certainly didn't get that attitude from me because I don't see anything wrong with being able to say, "Winner of Ms. Belly Dance 2005, 2006 and 2007".

Is there a difference between solo categories and troupe? Shadows of the Fire competed at the Classic from 2002 to 2006 and won 1st or 2nd each year. They weren't the same people every year, but there were some of the same people. However, no *soloist* has ever done this.

Am I missing something? Okay, I get it's not like sports where the winning team goes back hoping to dominate at state or win the Super Bowl year after year, but in ballroom dancing the same people compete for the same titles year after year. It's almost obligatory if you have an award winning studio.

Anyway, I am curious about your thoughts.

I'm wondering what it's like. There are some contests that have Folkloric categories among jazz, ballet, tumbling, etc. Did anyone ever consider entering that category? Even if you didn't think you'd be judged fairly, I'd love for someone to have the guts to try. Especially if you've won some competitions in our community already . . .

What is the norm in terms of compensation for competition judges? I have plans for my event in terms of an honorarium, but am curious what others do. Any info anyone would like to share?

I want to thank everyone who came and competed. It isn't easy to put yourself on the stage in front of judges. It takes a real desire to grow in the dance. These competitors are serious about their art form. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to our judges and all of my staff. I couldn't do this without you! Mezdulene

Choreography vs. Improv

Most competitions say that either choreography or improv is acceptable - what are the advantages and drawbacks of each in your opinions?

I tend to perform improv because when I do strictly choreography I receive feedback about appearing overly technique-focused, but when I perform improv I am always a little nervous that I am not as polished as the choreography would have been though I receive very positive feedback.

How do you find that line in competitions?

my favorite thing

What's your favorite thing about competiton?

My favorite thing is seeing someone who didn't do so well come back the next year and be like, 'Oh, my GOD! What happened to her!" :)

Three years ago we had a self-taught dancer show up in her homemade costume. She was in awe of all the dancers, shopping, and styles of dance. She didn't place. She soaked it all in. Watched the video of her category, worked with the judge's comments and came back the next year. She gained confidence, poise, technique, and stage presence. When she stepped off the stage, she hugged the stage manager (who was there the year before) and said with the biggest smile on her face, "Did I improve or what?!" She won 3rd place that year.

Last year we had a troupe compete with a similar story. They didn't have a teacher. They didn't have a local community where they could see pros dance and didn't have a lot of workshop opportunities. They came and did what they could the first year. They took the judges' comments and worked with them. When they performed this year, everybody was like, "Wow! What happened to them?" They won 3rd place this year.

You just get a feeling that those types of people will keep on improving and being an inspiration to those who watch. I think that's the coolest thing ever.

Why can't a traditional well-rounded dancer judge tribal?

It's the same moves, same rhythms, just leave out the frou-frou & sparkles and add some piercings & tatoos, right?

Just curious what you'll say, I'm not trying to justify anything . . . .

I've been doing more Turikish/Am Cab lately -- is that sort of thing appreciated in competitions or is it usually that straight-up Egyptian is expected?

Mistakes that new competitors make?

Hello! I am new to this tribe. I have entered my first competition which is coming up in June. (Yes, I'm pretty nervous about it!) Someone mentioned in an earlier post "mistakes that newbies make" but didn't elaborate. Can anyone offer some examples so I know what NOT to do? The posts about what TO do have been wonderful so far! Apologies if this has been covered already and I didn't read that far back. :)

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions -- I'm so glad I came across this tribe!

do you know you are ready to compete?

I was told on Sunday that I was "competition ready". The commnet came from someone I trust, but still....

In any case, I'm in the pre-engagement stage. We all go through stages when we are making decision, pre-engagment, engagment, committment, action, and variations thereof. I've been thinking about competing, and have made some tentative steps towards it, like starting to work with a personal trainer and interveiwing (although they don't know it!) teachers who might be able to coach me.

So, how do you judge (hehehehe) when you're actually ready to do this?
