The word fistula comes directly from the exact same Latin word fistula meaning a flute or pipe. It's an abnormal passage (pipe) going from an abscess to somewhere else. The path of the passage is often to the outside of the body. The body is trying to physically remove the infection by dumping it outside.

Wed, August 29, 2007 - 8:32 PMOne of the most famous sufferers of fistulae was Cardinal Richlieu, not that that's any excuse for his actions. -

Re: Fistula: READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Thu, August 30, 2007 - 2:10 PMHave you read Huxley's 'Grey Eminence', Gidouille? It's the biography of Richelieu's right-hand man and chief agent, Père Joseph.
It's been an age since I've read either of them and that detail about Richelieu would certainly be germane to both. Both are great books-Huxley bought a novelist's verve to history. I've got them kicking around here _somewhere_ but sadly not readily to hand. -

Re: Fistula: READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Fri, August 31, 2007 - 12:06 AMNo I've read very little Huxley beyond Brave New World, The Devils and The Doors of Perception. Grey Eminence sounds right in my bailiwick. It was the history which led me to read The Devils and then see Russell's film.
More history than novel, all the same Barbara Tuchman's A Distant Mirror, The Calamitous 14th Century, employs a narrative thread of the fortunes of a historical noble family, to weave together the broader themes of war, anarchy, kingdoms bankrupted by war, plague, bad harvests, mini ice age, marauding unemployed soldiers, and the like, a society stressed to the point of physical and psychological collapse. -

Re: Fistula: READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Fri, August 31, 2007 - 7:54 AMI read it during the Reagan / Thatcher years and thought it spoke very much to the times then and perhaps is even more relevant today. One of her contentions is that when too wide a gulf opens between a society's ideals and reality it begins to collapse.
