RIP - Mr. Whipple - 1916-2007

LOS ANGELES - Dick Wilson, the actor and pitchman who played the uptight grocer begging customers "Please, don't squeeze the Charmin," died Monday. He was 91.

The man famous as TV's "Mr. Whipple" died of natural causes at the Motion Picture & Television Fund Hospital in Woodland Hills, said his daughter Melanie Wilson, who is known for her role as a flight attendant on the ABC sitcom "Perfect Strangers."

Over 21 years, Wilson made more than 500 commercials as Mr. George Whipple, a man consumed with keeping bubbly housewives from fondling the soft toilet paper. The punch line of most spots was that Whipple himself was a closeted Charmin-squeezer.

Wilson also played a drunk on several episodes of "Bewitched," as appeared as various characters on "Hogan's Heroes," "The Bob Newhart Show," and Walt Disney productions.

The first of his Charmin commercials aired in 1964 and by the time the campaign ended in 1985, the tag line and Wilson were pop culture touchstones.

"Everybody says, 'Where did they find you?' I say I was never lost. I've been an actor for 55 years," Wilson told the San Francisco Examiner in 1985.

Though Wilson said he initially resisted commercial work, he learned to appreciate its nuance.

"It's the hardest thing to do in the entire acting realm. You've got 24 seconds to introduce yourself, introduce the product, say something nice about it and get off gracefully."

Dennis Legault, Procter & Gamble's Charmin brand manager, said in a statement that Wilson deserves much of the credit for the product's success in the marketplace. He called the Mr. Whipple character "one of the most recognizable faces in the history of American advertising."

After Wilson retired, he continued to do occasional guest appearances for the brand and act on television. He declared himself not impressed with modern cinema.

"The kind of pictures they're making today, I'll stick with toilet paper," he told The Associated Press in 1985.

Procter & Gamble eventually replaced the Whipple ads with cartoon bears, but brought Wilson (as Whipple) back for an encore in 1999. The ad showed Wilson "coming out of retirement" against the advice of his golfing and poker buddies for one more chance to sell Charmin.

"He is part of the culture," his daughter said. "He was still funny to the very end. That's his legacy."

He was born in England in 1916, the son of a vaudeville entertainer and a singer. He moved to Canada as a child, serving in the Canadian Air Force during World War II, and became a U.S. citizen in 1954, he told the AP.

In addition to Melanie, Wilson is survived by his wife, Meg; a son, Stuart; and another daughter, Wendy.

Fistula
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fistula

Fistula

In medicine, a fistula (pl. fistulas or fistulae) is an abnormal connection or passageway between two epithelium-lined organs or vessels that normally do not connect. It is a very serious and painful disorder.

Fistula READ ALL ABOUT IT!
http://www.atlantadentist.com/fistula.html

The word fistula comes directly from the exact same Latin word fistula meaning a flute or pipe. It's an abnormal passage (pipe) going from an abscess to somewhere else. The path of the passage is often to the outside of the body. The body is trying to physically remove the infection by dumping it outside.

A co-worker dragged me to this dramatization of a Cornel Woolrich pulp noir, published in 1937 in Black Mask, and the basis of Convicted, a film with Rita Hayworth. Somehow I doubt those earlier versions were as funny as this one. The dialog retains all the grammatical and syntactical devices of a story with characters describing their actions and framing their own lines with third person interjections. The language falling between Chandler, Hammett and Damon Runyon.

Confetta, you would love this and it's right around the corner at Project Artaud, but there are only a couple more performances.
And HOW do you FEEL about yourself HARVEY?

How long can you keep up this CHARADE?

I am deeply hurt.

Roscoe Arbuckle

Stuart Oderman's book on Roscoe is more that of a fan than a biographer. Oderman makes his living playing live accompaniment to silent films. He relates the salient facts and anecdotes, but has neither the distance nor much of the reliance on speculation of a usual biographer, not a bad approach in this case. Many of the details of Arbuckle's life were new to me, for instance his abandonment by his father at age 12 when relatives put him on a train to San Jose and his father skipped out of town before he arrived, performing was initially just a way to survive and beat washing dishes in the hotel, so he gravitated to being a so-called illustrated singer, a staple of Vaudeville lineups. He toured all over the country in Vaudeville and even some legitimate theatre, even toured China and Japan in The Mikado, prior to ever setting foot in front of a camera. Later he had occasion to meet Caruso and sing for him, and was told he might have made it in an opera chorus.

The core of Oderman's book, its perspective, is largely based upon a series of interviews he conducted with Minta Durfee, Arbuckle's first wife and one of his co-stars both on stage and at Keystone, prior to her death in the mid 70's. Despite having separated from Arbuckle in 1917, and him twice remarrying, she remained loyal to his memory right up to the end. The scandal is dealt with in workmanlike fashion, but it's the least interesting part of the story.

Laughsmith's The Forgotten Films of Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle makes a wonderful companion to the book. The four DVDs are organized chronologically, disc one begins with Fatty Joins the Force from November 1913 and disc four concludes with Bridge Wives, a short directed by Arbuckle in 1932. It would have been nice if some of those last shorts in which he acted just prior to his death had been included, but perhaps they're lost or another volume is being planned. In any case the 32 films included in the set show Arbuckle's enormous impact on everyone from Keaton to Chaplin to Curly Howard to Jackie Gleason. Keaton always acknowledged his debt, saying Arbuckle had taught him everything he knew about film, but others have gotten the credit for many of his innovations. How many who laud Chaplin for the dancing potatoes in The Gold Rush know that it's a riff on a gag with dinner rolls tossed off by Arbuckle in The Rough House six years earlier.

The early Keystone films were built on very simple premises, and it's easy to see how quickly Arbuckle, Chaplin and Mabel Normand grew beyond the confines of Sennett's simplistic vision. Still there are numerous fine bits, inventive gags and a truly wonderful chemistry between Arbuckle and Mabel Normand, in the eight Fatty and Mabel films included. Sadly Fatty and Mabel Adrift, one of their best, is not part of this set, perhaps because it was included in the Slapstick Encyclopedia box.

Disc one includes the two films Arbuckle made with Chaplin, The Knockout and The Rounders, as well as the first few of the Fatty and Mabel series.

Parks figure large in Keystone films, most of them taking place in either Griffith, Echo or others in the LA area. Wished on Mabel is an exception and a particular favorite. A very simple little film based around a stolen watch, which was directed by Normand and shot in Golden Gate Park in 1915. Several of the films include commentary by members of the Silent Movie Mafia, who impart interesting comical details of the films and cast.

Disc three includes another of the best Keystones, He Did and He Didn't, which like Fatty and Mabel Adrift was made in Fort Lee, NJ away from Sennett's grasp, and thus features much more sophisticated and subtle work in which Normand and Arbuckle both shine. A hitherto thought lost film, Love, made in 1919 while Keaton was still away in France is also included. Only one of the Arbuckle / Keaton collaborations appears here, Fatty at Coney Island, but those are all available in other collections.

Disc four begins with Leap Year, the last of Arbuckle's feature length films finished prior to the scandal which destroyed his career. It was released only in Europe. The impact of the scandal is clear as so many of his films like this one have only survived in European archives. The remainder of disc five is taken up with shorts Arbuckle directed under pseudonyms after he was banned from the screen. His friends got together and set up a company to produce two reelers in order to provide him with income. Keaton went so far as to sign 30% of his own profits over to Arbuckle. My Stars is a clever little farce with Johnny Arthur as the suitor of a woman who only has eyes for pin ups of matinee idols she receives in the mail. He gets the idea of becoming these stars for her, and transforms himself into Valentino as the Sheik only to find that she's moved onto Fairbanks. He then does himself up as Robin Hood by which time she's on to someone else. At one point she tells her butler how dreamy some idol is, to which he replies his favorite is Buster Keaton, a clear Arbuckle touch. Fool's Luck has English acrobat Lupino Lane, some relation to Ida, as a fop whose uncle has cut him off, having to vacate his hotel suite for lack of funds. There's a great gag in which he finds himself atop a piano as it's lowered from a window several stories in the air.

The set is rounded out by a 35 page booklet of essays and notes. I hope this will allow for the reassessment of the work of the silent comic whose never received his due. Laughsmith's site announces two new books being prepared on Arbuckle, one an assessment of all of his films and the other devoted to clearing his name once and for all. There are also rumors that they may produce a similarly lavish set devoted to Mabel Normand, which would be wonderful news, if true.

Tammy Faye Messner dies at 65

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070722/ap_on_re_us/obit_tammy_faye_messner_5
By STEVE HARTSOE, Associated Press
RALEIGH, N.C. - Tammy Faye Messner, who as Tammy Faye Bakker helped her husband, Jim, build a multimillion-dollar evangelism empire and then saw it collapse in disgrace, has died. She was 65.

Messner, who had battled colon cancer since 1996 that more recently spread to her lungs, died at her home Friday, said her booking agent, Joe Spotts. A family service was held Saturday in a private cemetery, where her ashes were interred, he said.

She had frequently spoken about her medical problems, saying she hoped to be an inspiration to others. "Don't let fear rule your life," she said. "Live one day at a time, and never be afraid." But she told well-wishers in a note on her Web site in May that the doctors had stopped trying to treat the cancer.

In an interview with CNN's Larry King two months later, an emaciated Messner — still using her trademark makeup — said, "I believe when I leave this earth, because I love the Lord, I'm going straight to heaven." Asked if she had any regrets, Messner said: "I don't think about it, Larry, because it's a waste of good brain space."

For many, the TV image of then-Mrs. Bakker forgiving husband Jim's infidelities, tears streaking her cheeks with mascara, became a symbol for the wages of greed and hypocrisy in 1980s America.

She divorced her husband of 30 years in 1992 while he was in prison for defrauding millions from followers of their PTL television ministries. The letters stood for "Praise the Lord" or "People that Love."

Her second husband also served time in prison. She married Roe Messner, who had been the chief builder of the Bakkers' Heritage USA Christian theme park near Fort Mill, S.C., in 1993. In 1995, he was convicted of bankruptcy fraud, and he spent about two years in prison.

Through it all, Messner kept plugging her faith and herself. She did concerts, a short-lived secular TV talk show and an inspirational videotape. In 2004, she cooperated in the making of a documentary about her struggle with cancer, called "Tammy Faye: Death Defying."

"I wanted to help people ... maybe show the inside (of the experience) and make it a little less frightening," she said.

That same year, she appeared on the WB reality show "The Surreal Life," co-starring with former rapper Vanilla Ice, ex-porn star Ron Jeremy and others. She told King in 2004 that she didn't know who Jeremy was when they met and they became friends.

Messner was never charged with a crime in connection with the Bakker scandal. She said she counted the costs in other ways.

"I know what it's like to hit rock bottom," she said in promotional material for her 1996 video "You Can Make It."

Gunman bursts into party, tastes cheese and wine, gets hug, then leaves

WASHINGTON - Police on Capitol Hill are baffled by an attempted robbery that began with a handgun put to the head of a teenager and ended in a group hug.

It started about midnight on June 16 when a group of friends was finishing a dinner of marinated steaks and jumbo shrimp on the back patio of a District of Columbia home. That's when a hooded man slid through an open gate and pointed a handgun at the head of a 14-year-old girl.

"Give me your money, or I'll start shooting," he said, according to D.C. police and witnesses.

Everyone froze, including the girl's parents. Then one guest spoke.

"We were just finishing dinner," Cristina "Cha Cha" Rowan, 43, told the man. "Why don't you have a glass of wine with us?"

The intruder had a sip of their Chateau Malescot St-Exupery and said, "Damn, that's good wine."

The girl's father, Michael Rabdau, 51, told the intruder to take the whole glass, and Rowan offered him the whole bottle.

The robber, with his hood down, took another sip and a bite of Camembert cheese. He put the gun in his sweatpants.

The story then turns even more bizarre.

"I think I may have come to the wrong house," he said before apologizing. "Can I get a hug?"

Rowan, who works at her children's school and lives in Falls Church, Va., stood up and wrapped her arms around the armed man. The four other guests followed.

"Can we have a group hug?" the man asked. The five adults complied.

The man walked away a few moments later with the crystal wine glass in hand. Nothing was stolen, and no one was hurt.

Once he was gone, the group walked into the house, locked the door and stared at each other _ speechless. Rabdau called 911, and police came to take a report and dust for fingerprints.

Police classified the case as strange but true. Investigators have not located a suspect. The witnesses thought he might have been high on drugs.

"We've had robbers that apologize and stuff but nothing where they sit down and drink wine. It definitely is strange," said Cmdr. Diane Groomes, adding that the hugs were especially unusual. "The only good thing is they would be able to identify him because they hugged him."

I had been very worried because my main man had been laid off his job.

He was depressed about it as can be expected.

He is a Research Scientist and since Bush has been President and most moneys have been directed towards funding the war - the job market in education & science is very poor.

Science jobs have been cut left and right and funding has dried up : (

The job market in his field looked BLEAK at Best.

He got a job without even looking.
Word of mouth - people found out that he was being laid off due to no funding....and he got snapped up.

Not ONLY did he GET a job...
but it is cool because it is dual...

Hoo HOO!

I am so happy for him.

Richard Kern gives John Waters a run for the money in this short film starring the inimitable Lung Leg (along with Karen Finley) (this edited version for YouTube leaves out some good parts, unfortunately). Lung Leg... if only John Hughes had discovered her, she could've been bigger than Ally Sheedy...

I bought this DVD last week and it is totally fabulous. Unless you lived in SoCal during the early 80s you probably never saw her perform (I was lucky to on three occasions), and there is nothing else like it. Her stage presence and transformative energy was shamanic and she's a visionary artist. Enjoy this YouTube clip (even though it is just a small, taste of her spectacular stage show):

Once in a BLUE MOON....

Calendar blue moons occur infrequently, and the saying once in a blue moon is used to describe a rare event.
However, they are inevitable because of the mis-match between the solar and lunar cycles. Each calendar year contains twelve full lunar cycles, plus about eleven days to spare.

The extra days accumulate, so that while most years contain twelve full moons to match the twelve months, every two or three years there is a year with thirteen full moons.

On average, this happens once every 2.72 years.

When there are thirteen moons in a year, twelve of them are given the twelve traditional names associated with that time of year (the names vary from culture to culture), and the extra one is termed a blue moon.
Which of the thirteen moons is termed 'blue' depends on whether it is calculated by the old or the new method.

The months of the Gregorian calendar are all very close to the 29.5306-day period of the moon's phases: the synodic month, or lunation.
Most of the months are longer than this by one or two days, except February, which is the only month which cannot contain a calendar blue moon.
Since February is one or two days shorter than the moon's cycle, very occasionally it has no full moon – there is a full moon at the end of January, and the next one is at the beginning of March.
What this means is that both January and March will have blue moons. This happens, on average, once every thirty-five years.

The next two calendar blue moons (based on UTC) will be on June 30, 2007 (but May 31, 2007 in the Western Hemisphere, and December 31, 2009.

Because February, according to UTC, will have no full moon in 2018, January and March will each have a calendar blue moon that year.

Charles Nelson Reilly (January 13, 1931 – May 25, 2007)

Charles Nelson Reilly (January 13, 1931 – May 25, 2007)[1] was a Tony Award-winning American actor, comedian, director, and drama teacher known for his comedic roles in movies, children's television, animated cartoons, and as a panelist on the game show Match Game.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Nelson_Reilly

Early life

Reilly was born in the Bronx, New York and was the son of Charles Joseph Reilly, an Irish Catholic commercial artist, and Signe Elvera Nelson, a Swedish Lutheran.[2][3][4] At age 13 he escaped the Hartford Circus Fire[5] and never sat in an audience again in his life.[6]
Career
Reilly made his first movie appearance in 1957, playing an uncredited role in the Elia Kazan film A Face in the Crowd. However, most of his work during this period was on the stage, as he appeared in many off-Broadway shows. His big Broadway break came in 1960 with a minor part in the hit Bye Bye Birdie. Reilly would go on to win a Tony Award for his performance in 1962's How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying[7] , and he was nominated for another Tony two years later, for his work as Cornelius Hackl in the Broadway production of Hello, Dolly!.[8]
While he kept active in Broadway shows, Reilly would soon become better known for his TV work. In 1965, he made regular appearances on The Steve Lawrence Show, which aired for a single season. From 1968 to 1970, he appeared as uptight "Claymore Gregg" on the television series The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, which also starred Hope Lange and Edward Mulhare, in which he was reunited with Hello, Dolly! Broadway co-star, Eileen Brennan on one episode.
In 1971, he appeared as the evil magician "Hoodoo" in Lidsville, a psychedelically flavored live-action children's program produced by Sid and Marty Krofft that aired on Saturday mornings on ABC. The show was about a boy who falls into a magician's hat and enters a magical world of hat people. It is through these roles, as well as his playing the titular role in Uncle Croc's Block, that Reilly's voice and mannerisms were embedded in a generation of young fans.

During the 1970s Reilly also appeared as a regular on The Dean Martin Show, and had multiple guest appearances on television series including McMillan and Wife, Here's Lucy, Laugh In, The Love Boat and Love, American Style and was also a frequent guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. During this time Reilly was perhaps best known as a fixture of game shows, primarily due to his appearances as a regular panelist on the television game show Match Game. Reilly was the longest running guest, and often engaged in petty arguments with fellow regular Brett Somers. Reilly typically offered sardonic commentary and peppered his answers with gay-themed double entendres that pushed the boundaries of 1970s television standards.
From 1975-1976 Reilly starred in another live-action children's program called Uncle Croc's Block with Jonathan Harris. Reilly was often a guest celebrity in the 1984 game show Body Language, including one week with Lucille Ball and another week with Audrey Landers.
From 1980, Reilly was primarily active teaching acting and directing for television and theater. He directed episodes of the Evening Shade television series in 1990 and earned a 1997 Tony Award nomination as Best Director of a Play for working with longtime pal Julie Harris, opposite whom he had acted in Skyscraper, and whom he had directed in The Belle of Amherst and a revival of The Gin Game.
Reilly was a longtime teacher of acting at HB Studio, the acting studio created by Herbert Berghof and his wife, Uta Hagen. His acting students included Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler.
In the 1990s Reilly made guest appearances on The Drew Carey Show, The Larry Sanders Show, and most notably, as eccentric writer Jose Chung in the television series The X-Files ("Jose Chung's "From Outer Space"") and Millennium ("Jose Chung's Doomsday Defense"). Reilly was nominated for Emmy Awards in 1998 and 1999 for his performances in The Drew Carey Show and Millennium, respectively. From the late 1990s, Reilly directed theater and opera, touring the country performing a critically acclaimed one man stage show chronicling his life called Save It For the Stage: The Life of Reilly and occasionally performing as the voice of "The Dirty Bubble" on the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. In 2006, his stage show was made into a feature film called The Life of Reilly.[9]

Personal life

Reilly did not publicly come out as gay until his one man show Save It for the Stage. However, much like fellow game show regular Paul Lynde, Reilly played up a campy onscreen persona. In many episodes of Match Game, he would lampoon himself by briefly affecting a deep voice and self-consciously describing how "butch" he was. He mentioned in a 2002 interview with Entertainment Tonight that he felt no need to come out of the closet and that he never purposefully hid his homosexuality from anyone.
Patrick Hughes III, a set decorator and dresser, was Reilly's partner; the two met backstage while Reilly was appearing on the game show Battlestars. They lived in Beverly Hills.[10].

On May 25, 2007, Reilly died at his home from complications from pneumonia after a year long illness.[11]
Reilly is mentioned in the song "Serrated Edge" by the Dead Milkmen (in which the lyrics assert that the band are using him as the "Christ" figure of their church).
A sample of Reilly playing Hoodoo on Lidsville is used by Marilyn Manson in the song Dope Hat.
On the TV series Son of the Beach, when Notch Johnson must go undercover in a gay bar, and has no idea how to act gay, he puts on a pair of glasses and begins to impersonate Charles Nelson Reilly.
Reilly was parodied by Alec Baldwin in a sketch on Saturday Night Live in which Reilly is interviewed by James Lipton (played by Will Ferrell) on Inside the Actors Studio. (Lipton closes the exchange with the typically hyperbolic declaration, "Charles Nelson Reilly, I am not alone in thinking that you make Gandhi look like a child pornographer.")
Reilly is referred to in a Mystery Science Theater 3000 segment featuring the short Once Upon a Honey Moon.

Joseph Cornell (1913-1984)

Rose Hobart (1936 USA 17mins)
Source: ScreenSound Prod Co: ORTF, Albina Films Prod: Micheline Rozan Dir, Scr: Orson Welles from novella by Isak Dinesen Phot: Willy Kurant Ed: Yolande Maurette, Marcelle Pluet, Françoise Garnault, Claude Farny Art Dir: André Piltant

Source: NLA/CAC Filmmaker: Joseph Cornell With Rose Hobart

The first and greatest American Surrealist, Joseph Cornell is best known for his boxes. The best of his mysterious assemblages of dime-store tchochkes and paper ephemera in little hand-made cabinets perfectly realize the elusive sublime at the heart of Surrealism, while avoiding the juvenile theatrics of his European colleagues.

However, Cornell was also one of the most original and accomplished filmmakers to emerge from the Surrealist movement, and one of the most peculiar. Just as the ascetic and introverted Cornell himself held Surrealism at arms length, borrowing only those elements that suited his interests and temperament, his films superficially resemble those made by other Surrealists, they are in truth sui generis. Only a handful of his contemporaries understood the genius of films like his Rose Hobart — an unfortunate situation exacerbated by Cornell's own obstinate resistance to public screenings. No one made films even remotely similar to Cornell's for almost thirty years, and even now the perfect opacity of his montage remains unrivalled.

Rose Hobart consists almost entirely of footage taken from East of Borneo, a 1931 jungle B-film starring the nearly forgotten actress Rose Hobart. Cornell condensed the 77-minute feature into a 20-minute short, removing virtually every shot that didn't feature Hobart, as well as all of the action sequences. In so doing, he utterly transforms the images, stripping away the awkward construction and stilted drama of the original to reveal the wonderful sense of mystery that saturates the greatest early genre films.

While East of Borneo is a sound film, Rose Hobart must be projected at silent speed, accompanied by a tape of "Forte Allegre" and "Belem Bayonne" from Nestor Amaral's Holiday in Brazil, a kitschy record Cornell found in a Manhattan junk store. As a result, the characters move with a peculiar, lugubrious lassitude, as if mired deep in a dream. In addition, the film should be projected through a deep blue filter, unless the print is already tinted blue. The rich blue tint it imparts is the same hue universally used in the silent era to signify night.

Rose Hobart was only one of several mythologized actresses who populated Cornell's hermetic world. Many of his boxes were homages to the actresses that formed his pantheon: Lauren Bacall, Hedy Lamarr, Greta Garbo and Deanna Durbin, among others. In Rose Hobart, Cornell holds Hobart in a state of semi-suspension, turning the film itself into a sort of box. She moves her hands, shifts her gaze, gestures briefly, smiles enigmatically, perhaps steps slightly to the side, and little more. The world appears as a sort of strange theatre, staged for her alone.

But the root of Cornell's genius as a filmmaker is his singular version of montage. Cornell's version of continuity is the continuity of the dream. He does not juxtapose images so much as suggest unlikely — but still vaguely plausible — connections between them. Hobart's clothing may change suddenly between shots, but her gesture is continued or she remains at a similar point in the frame. Unlike most collage filmmakers, Cornell does not rely on cheap irony or non sequitur. His films are unsettling because their inexplicable strings of images are like reflections from the deep well of the subconscious. In fact, one of the most arresting images in Rose Hobart comes when a solar or lunar eclipse is paired with the image of an object falling into a circular pool of water. Hobart simply gazes bemusedly at this spectacle, as if it were little more than a parlour trick.

Rose Hobart premiered in December, 1936 at the Julian Levy Gallery. Cornell included it in a matinee program of short films from his collection, which Levy titled “Goofy Newsreels.” The first Surrealist exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art was about to open, and many of the artists were in town, including Salvador Dali, who attended Cornell's film program. During the screening of Rose Hobart, Dali became extremely agitated. Halfway through the film he began shouting "Salaud!" — bastard — and overturned the projector. Reportedly, Dali ruefully explained his actions to Levy, "My idea for a film is exactly that, and I was going to propose it to someone who would pay to have it made…. I never wrote it or told anyone, but it is as if he had stolen it (Solomon 89).” Some prefer an apocryphal — but far more poetic — explanation also attributed to Dali: “He stole it from my subconscious.”
tawdry

"cheap, showy, gaudy," 1676, adjective use of noun tawdry "silk necktie for women" (1612), shortened from tawdry lace (1548), an alteration of St. Audrey's lace, a necktie or ribbon sold at the annual fair at Ely on Oct. 17 commemorating St. Audrey (queen of Northumbria, died 679), whose name was worn down from O.E. Æðelðryð "noble might," from æðele "noble" (from P.Gmc. *athala-, from PIE *at-al- "race, family," from *at(i)- "over, beyond, super" + *al- "to nourish") + ðryð "might." Her association with cheap lace necklaces is that she supposedly died of a throat tumor, which she considered God's punishment for her youthful fondness for showy necklaces [Bede].
