We have all heard and read the propaganda that reads sort of like : "It is no small thing to daily go out there, risking your life, not knowing what lunatic might be behind the next door....so, you know, some of us get it...that it is very serious work and we do appreciate it. "
Well it's a fucking lie.
It is pure propaganda spread by the police themselves.
While it's true that in some neighborhoods and every once in a blue moon on a rural highway there are shots fired at the cops the simple fact is that it is the exceptionally rare circumstance that cops get assaulted attacked or shot at.
Mostly it's a damn lie.
You have a substantially better chance being attacked and murdered in your own home than any given police officer has of being shot on duty. Your chances of being attacked and murdered go up exponentially when you venture out of your home.
I just know that some folks will have a hard time with those assertions:
Here is a CENTURY of police deaths:
"A summary of the top ten leading causes of law enforcement fatalities during the past century follows (does not include 1999 figures):
1. Firearms (6,846 or 49%)
2. Automobile Accidents (2,090 or 15%)
3. Motorcycle Accidents (1,022 or 7%)
4. Struck by Vehicle (955 or 7%)
5. Job-related Illness (588 or 4%)
6. Aircraft Accidents (311 or 2%)
7. Stabbings (197 or 1%)
8. Fall (147 or 1%)
9. Drowning (142 or 1%)
10. Beaten (134 or 1%)
Roughly 61% of the officers killed this past century were feloniously assaulted by criminals, and 39% died in accidental circumstances (e.g., automobile accidents, aircraft accidents, shooting accidents, etc.). However, during each of the past five years (including 1999) that trend has reversed itself with more accidental deaths than felonious. Roughly 5% of the officers who died over the past 100 years were killed taking law enforcement action while in an off duty capacity."

In 2008:
" Based on preliminary data, the groups found that 140 law enforcement officers were killed in 2008 -- 86 of them accidentally and 54 intentionally.
Just the year before, the group found 181 deaths -- 108 of them accidental and 73 intentional.
"Fewer officers were killed by gunfire in 2008 than in any year since 1956," the report says. "Preliminary data indicate 41 officers died in firearms-related incidents this year, compared with 68 in 2007, a reduction of 40 percent.""

However a look at some raw numbers may help dispel the lie that claims that the Police are ricking it all for you:

1985 . . . . . . 18,976

Re: LIE: Police risk life & limb for you. The fact is they don't. .
Thu, June 18, 2009 - 11:16 AMCops lie? REALLY? Propaganda? REALLY? hahahahahaha
I understand that the worst profession for on-the-job deaths, most dangerous job in other words, is being a highway worker. Not much glamor in that, though...

Re: LIE: Police risk life & limb for you. The fact is they don't. .
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 11:49 AMI've got my own complaints and conspiracies about a lot of police forces but you've also gotta remember that statistics don't tell the full story.
Have you ever heard the saying 'There are lies, then there are damn lies and then there are statistics.@
I've heard of some horror stories from friends who have known private detectives and such being some of the most corrupt people ever.
Most cops join just because it gives them a right to exert dominance over others. A lot of cops tend to be bullies made good. -

Re: LIE: Police risk life & limb for you. The fact is they don't. .
Sat, June 20, 2009 - 1:14 AMNever met or knew a private detective, or as least not knowingly. I have no personal knowledge about their ethical standards....
As to cops, yep. A lot of cops were dickheads as a kid. Funny how that is. I had s few from my peer group go that route and they were invariably the jocks, the bully, the pushy loudmouth, the conservative christian republican flagwaver types. Also had run-ins with brutal assholes that should never have been given power to attack people indiscriminantly. Protect and SERVE my ass.
And I got to see it again as my kids went through high school with this one assbite bully type who was nicknamed "The Ignorant." No, I'm not kidding. The kids in his grade called him that to his face. He was the PERFECT stereotype I swear!
Just to be fair I will admit all three of mine were snowboarders and heavily into rec center league soccer, along with some school sports. They had their jock side. And I have a 4.5 GPA scholarship daughter finishing her DVM at UC Davis that was in the same grade...but her twin bro barely made it through high school so I understand both sides of any argument that I'm being overly harsh to The Ignorant in my negative judgement of his intelligence and ethical standards. He WAS an ignorant dumb mean son of a bitch. Big fucker, too.
Just GUESS what job he now has in that small population 3,500 at 3,500 feet elevation NorCal mountain town? You only get one guess. Hint: he carries a Sig .40 cal and gets to order around his old classmates when he pulls them over for various bullshit hassles (and of course lots of other age groups). Too often this is reality. -

Re: LIE: Police risk life & limb for you. The fact is they don't. .
Sat, June 20, 2009 - 3:22 AMThe biggest problem with police forces and army forces is that, if nobody wants to join, they have to lower their standards just to get their numbers up.
I've seen the stupidest idiots becoming police officers. I met three in a pub once and they were a bunch of lager swilling rugby boys.
One said "My names Gazza, this is Bazza and this ard fucker 'ere is Vicey. We're cops."
I remember thinking to this day, if these guys are supposed to protect us then you've gotta be kidding me. When these guys aren't on duty they're probably getting in fights on a saturday night after too much drinking. -

Re: LIE: Police risk life & limb for you. The fact is they don't. .
Sat, June 20, 2009 - 10:48 AMI like cops. Theyre hot. I would like to be one if I could. But I dont think they let heart patients that occasionally use illegal drugs in. I would be so conflicted and forced to lie about alot of things. I'd be a really good cop though. I would be like that cop in Terminator 2. : ) -

Sat, June 20, 2009 - 11:06 AMI'd love to be a police officer but not here in London. Talk about miserable.
I reckon I'd be a good cop. Not corrupt.

Re: LIE: Police risk life & limb for you. The fact is they don't. .
Sat, June 20, 2009 - 11:17 AMOh I would probably be more corrupt as a cop than I am not being a cop. I'm hardly corrupt at all. But I feel like corruption just comes with the territory if youre a cop or polititian. I'd have a phat offshore or Swiss account for sure. London would probably suck. Those bitches still can carry guns can they? Where do you live in London? I stay in Newcross when I visitate.
