Mon, April 27, 2009 - 2:18 PMAnyone who takes the Bible as literal truth has already lost the ability to think critically or clearly. Combine that with a hateful mind set and a leader like Phelps and anything is possible. They are already crazy enough to picket funerals and carry signs celebrating the death of the person being mourned. This includes recent years where they picket the funerals of U.S. soldiers who died in Iraq. Not because the soldier was gay, but because they believe God is punishing America for tolerating gay people.
My main concern with what is in their church blog is that they might try to hurt some of their percived enemies before they take themselves out. I also worry about may happen to children that followers of Phelps may have if they decide to "drink the Kool Aid." -

Denying himself the pleasures he relishes is a recipe for disaster. Who the hell would listen to anything that shirtlifter has to say now? Anyone that is stupid enough to follow him deserves whatever fucking bullshit that may happen. Maybe not deserve it. But if something bad does happen they will probably be all shocked and surprised. ( If they live through it. ) Like they just didnt see it coming at all. Totally blind. Because that "Holy Spirit" thingy that dwells in them is so disernful and wise. Gimme a fuckin break. Someone please make me the next fascist dictator of the world. I am ready to commit genocide and I got a growing list of fuckin' names of mother fuckers I would round up in the first wave. It's a long, but well-worth reading, post by Fred Phelp's son. He talks about what life was like with dear old dad...and it's even worse than one would expect. So for Phelps's kids and grand-kids I can only feel a mixture of pity and sadness. They've had this poisonous bile literally beaten into them since they were children. I just can't hate them. I can olny hope another of his kids wakes themselves up and realizes "this is bullshit" and takes themselves and their own children away and into the real world.

Wed, May 27, 2009 - 12:33 PMI read the story and, scary as it may sound, there is a thread of Phelps running through every christian I've ever talked with, from Witnesses to Baptists. And after doing university work in northern Utah in the late 80s (yep, I'm a USU "Aggie"), I can add the mormons in on this one as they think everyone not mormon-EVERYONE else on the planet, is going to burn.
